OT: Brand Situmeration
So as a recent college graduate with no job, I have a lot of free time on my hands. And I love the NBA. But I am not so sure I love Elton Brand. I listened to Brand's comments on ESPN and to Coach D's (i can't spell Dunleavy) comments too. It might be me, but I really think that Brand screwed the Clips and his buddy Boom Dizzle. A recap of what i know (sans verification...if i'm wrong, please please please correct me):
B. Dizz wants an extention from GS beyond this year. Doesn't get it. Attempts to force Mullin's hand by opting out. Also opts out with an eye toward LA as it's BD's hometown and he's also making movies. BD probably talks with Brand about movies (Brand has his own production company, BD just released a documentary about gangs) and b-ball. Brand doesn't like losing, doesn't like playing for Mr. Sterling except when they win. Brand suggests to BD to sign with LA for an '05-'06 renaissance. Brand says he'll opt out b/c he wants the clips to sign BD and so he can get a contract extention beyond this season. Brand says he'll take less money so the clips can be competitive (ps you can make WAY more money in movies with WAY less effort than you can in basketball). BD agrees to a contract with the clips, $65m/5yr. Brand says he'll return to the clips for less money, specifically $75m/5yr (according to reports and pissed-off dunleavy). Now, there is some previous tension between Sterling and Falk (Brand's agent) about the offer sheet situation when brand signed with Miami and the clips matched. Falk didn't want Brand to sign with the Clips for obvious reasons (read: Sterling's cheaper than my Nike-made converse which now have holes in the soles after a mere 3 months). Fast forward to this summer, clips make their offer, and somewhere along the line, because of Sterling's hatred for Falk or negotiation difficulties, the clips try to deal directly with brand. Falk apparently asked for a max extention (something like $120m/6yrs) this summer, and if he didn't get it, he'd ask for $150m/7yrs next summer. Sterling says wait a minute, Brand just had a major injury (ruptured achilles', only played 8 games last year), is 29, and one of either of those contracts would kill the clippers cap space until 2020. Sterling, Baylor, or someone of the like goes behind Falk's back to try to negotiate with Brand himself. Major no-no in the sports agent world, as you are threatening their ~3% commision on a multi-million dollar contract. Brand tells Falk, Falk goes nuclear (or nucular if your GW). Falk, whose status in the league as a power player has declined recently, pulls a power move, saying 'wanna go behind my back, do ya? take this' and starts talking to GS and Philly about Brand. GS offers $95m/5yr. GS looks like it's taking a step back this year, brand says no thanks. Philly comes along, offers $80m/5yr, has a good young core (T. Young, Iggy, Lou Will, Sam Dam) and some vets (A. Miller), plays in the weaker east. Brand/Falk, pissed at the clips for previous/current slights, says yes to the 76ers.Final score: BD 1, Brand 1, Philly and fans 1, Clip's fans -5,459,384
This brings us up to speed, i think, on the situation. Man does it suck to be a clips fan these days. My deepest sympathies go out to Frankie Munoz. I also think BDizz got screwed somewhat. He could have played out this year, had another good year with GS, and got a bigger contract next year when more teams have cap space. Yes, he did get his contract extention, and if he doesn't get along with Mike D, he might develop some phantom injury (See: Scott, Byron and how BD played under him). And Brand did get his contract extension. Brand says the clips low-balled him, and even worse, made it a take-it-or-leave-it offer. Dunleavy says that he has, among other things, the contract edited by Falk and text messages from Brand saying that all he asked for was $75m/5yrs. Dunleavy also says that other players have TM's from Brand saying something like "you me and BD!" Which side do you agree with? Honestly, I just feel for the clips' fan as they're getting screwed again. But, if what the Dun-meister says is true, Brand is, well, a douche. Admittedly, the clips would have been playing the same 5 guys all year (BD, Brand, Kaman, Gordon, Thornton) with no bench, and wouldn't have been a lock to make the playoffs, but i'm not so sure about Philly though. Maybe it's just me, but it seems as though they were overachieving a bit this year. Also, i know the west is stacked, but Dallas is in decline, Phoenix has the Methusalian tandem of Nash-O'Neal, Denver is another two glasses of red wine away from Anthony getting another DUI, and Houston needed a record-breaking win streak to get in the playoffs while the over/under on Yao's apperances this year is 41. That's half of the west's playoff teams. Yes, portland is on the rise and should be in the playoffs next year, but GS most def. is out of the playoff picture now, as are all the other lottery teams from the west (who? Sacto? Really? Sactown? Artest and Martin? Really?). Yes, this is unfounded hyperbole from an unemployed guy with a BA in Ancient Greek, but it's not unreasonable (maybe it is). If you made it this far, just remember: khalipa ta kala (noble things are difficult). Thanks for reading. Comment away...go blazers. batum will be amazing.

Ancient Greek is much harder than Koine.
Χαλεπά τά καλά is so true. It also seems to be the motto of a fraternity in Boston. There are a few people (or at least one that I know for sure) around here that are at least capable in Greek. Always good to have another, although it looks like you’ve been around here and there for a little while. So what are your plans for a BA in Greek? It’s a good step towards a Master’s degree, but I haven’t thought about one on its own, if that is what your plan is.
I’m hard pressed to think of any Western Conference team that improved this off season so far other than the Blazers. I suppose one could say that Minnesota and Seattle improved, but it’s not like they could do much else. Maybe the Grizz? None of the playoff teams did much at all so far. Because of that, I think that the Warriors still have an outside shot at the playoffs, but certainly not because their team improved.
I feel bad for the Clippers fans. They can never really catch a break. Ownership has hurt that team something awful.
Good roundup of what the situation is with those teams, thanks!

Oh man, you wrote "Seattle" and "improved" not only in the same sentence but also right next.
If you call an improvement when the city lose its team I can´t imagine what you might call recession. :-)

Ancient greek is pretty hard
but it’s also pretty fun. If anyone really REALLY wants to learn about why the greatest tool used by man is language, study greek (and latin too for that matter). no plans to further pursue anything relating to the ancient world. study of latin and greek had been the basis of education up until the 20th c. (so it seems), and that’s how i’m using it. I’d like to go into law, as i think that’s where my education will be best used, but who knows.
As far as b-ball, the addition of fernandez and oden will be major for the ‘zers. but i really think the Lkers will be much improved with Bynum. Interestingly enough, Bynum has yet to be cleared for basketball activity according to Kupchak. But Bynum says otherwise, that the drs have cleared him. Trouble in paradise? God i hope so. Also, D-Will has expressed concerns about signing an extension with Utah because of the potential loss of Boozer next year and Sloan’s uncertainty. If there’s any man that deserves a ‘body of work’ award (a la Kbe) last year, it’s Sloan and a Coach of the Year award.

Can't have classical education without the classical languages.
I think everyone should have to learn Greek and Latin. It would single-handedly raise the level of conversation exponentially. People may still be idiots, but at least they would be well-spoken idiots.
Law would be a good field to explore, but if you ever have the desire to enter the office of the Holy Ministry, you would have a significant leg up on many who aspire to that office.

I actually think...
...you’d have far less idiots if everyone had to learn latin and greek. People would be able to more easily recognize fallacious arguments and also be able to say exactly what they mean, as opposed to throwing out a bunch of clichés with emotional force á la bill o. also, if people would read george orwell (particularly his essay “politics and the english language”), they’d be come much, much, MUCH better writers. it clearly has not rubbed off on me, despite whatever claims i make.
in re: becoming a member of the church, not on your or Zach Randolph’s life. i have my own opinions on the veracity of the NT and the way christianity views jews (i’m a jew). i think i’ve stepped into OT territory with the last comment. I think law is the place for me. if not, i can always teach someone somewhere latin and greek (and french too).

I find the contrasts between Christianity and Judaism very interesting.
Some of the same issues in academia trouble both groups. Jon Levenson published a book that I found very engaging on that subject called The Hebrew Bible, the Old Testament, and Historical Criticism. Levenson, a Jew himself made both a familiar and a unique argument, which ended up being one of the better learning experiences that I have had.
But I am getting a little too much into the religious end of things, and probably overstepping the purpose of this site. But I always enjoy the conversation.

Amazon's customer reviews are all over the place.
Of course, as one reader describes, being a Marxist defense of religion, I would expect mixed reviews. Interesting concept, to be sure.

Zizek will blow your mind into a million pieces
Every time I read one of his books I disagree with about nine out of ten of his arguments.
But damn if that tenth argument doesn’t leave me thinking for weeks.

I also recommend
Paula Fredrickson’s From Jesus to Christ for those interested. It’s an eminently readable introduction to the Parting of the Ways. Also, for those interested in the origins of anti-semitism, The Origins of Anti-Semitism by John Gager is fascinating. Dave is probably gonna be so pissed i’m continuing this convo, but this question is so much more engaging than discussing the blazers’ off-season.

even tuetonic monemes and phonemes wouldnt be able ...

Clips lost Maggette also
So now they are really going to be the clips again, another one pony show with the Baron shooting everything inside of half court. Poor guys almost put it together, but my magic 8 ball just called another 55 loss season.

Hopefully the Clipps make a run at Okafor. I don’t really want another elite team in the West, but you have to have some empathy for Clipps fans.
Right?

“Denver is another two glasses of red wine away from Anthony getting another DUI.”
Hilarious!
Not sure how referencing the Ancient Greek language after saying the words “Boom Dizzle” works for you, but all-in-all… great post. If REC translates to “recommend” than you win.

Boom Dizzle...
...is Baron Davis’ nickname. Not my own invention, that’s for sure. I’d love to take credit for such genius, but alas, i cannot. Yeah, the whole two glasses of red wine thing was Anthony’s excuse for his 1st DUI. Thanks for the compliment.
