Recent reports have created a stir and then in many cases an itchy scalp, as most devolved to head-scratching. What is the situation with the Miles suspension? I won't go into all the ins and outs but a non-announced suspension of this ten-game length doesn't fit with any of the situations people have presented.
Popping positive on a marijuana test for a ten-game suspension should have been announced as a well as a previous five-game suspension having been announced and recorded... these events have not and did not occur.
A Steroids / Performance Enhancement Test would have been announced for the type of drug found. This also did not occur.
After mulling over the subject I came up with one possibility which now seems to me to be the most likely and so far only one I can come up with. Darius Miles popped positive on a Steroid / Performance Enhancement Test during his independent medical retirement evaluation. In such a case the Collective Bargaining Agreement may only cover drug testing under the standard testing policy. If a positive test were to come up during the retirement evaluation a suspension may need to come up of the ten-game variety, but the announcement of the reason and the suspension itself might remain cloaked in secrecy stemming from a non-standard medical situation, thus making the details more privileged in nature.
It seems to me that the situation of secrecy surrounding the Miles suspension does not fit any of the standard suspension formats or notifications. From that point I am left to guess like everyone else, but this line of reasoning seems to me to be the most likely. It takes into account the different circumstances of the last year for Darius, and ultimately dovetails with the odd events around the Darius suspension.
