Is Ike Diogu in game shape?

Hello, Long time reader but infrequent poster as usually by the time I think of something to add or point out, one of you fine readers/bloggers beat me to it. What I haven't seen is much commentary on Ike.

After the initial reports of his signing, the talk was that he would play a couple of games in the summer league. Now, we learn that he will not play at all due to a "tweaked ankle." Which isn't supposed to be serious but enough to warrant some rest.

What I noticed during the press conference yesterday was the Ike looked a bit overweight. You can see the excess in his face and stomach a bit. Granted, he might be able to burn this off quickly, but it leaves one to wonder about his offseason conditioning program. Could this be a factor in not playing summer league in addition to the ankle?

I'll be curious as to his game shape once training camp begins.

Thoughts on this?

Cheers

can't say and anything I say would be conjecture

He looked like he had some serious guns under his suit, to me. Additionally he was recovering from injury. It IS possibly that the blazers are putting him through the workouts with the trainers to beef him back up.

Big-boned

I didn’t see Ike’s picture, but saw him plenty during his AZ days. He’s always been a bigger guy, in the mold of Paul Millsap at Utah, for instance, or even our old favorite Zach Randolph. He’s a bit short for the PF spot, but has the wide body that lets him get his shot off and grab rebounds.

when I saw him

I saw a zach like build with the chubba wubba face more than a player out of shape.

I have a feeling KP is gonna get every ounce of productivity from this guy

I dont know what “ankle tweak” means… but I suppose they dont see any need to have him playing summer league ball so why not just have him work out at the practice facility? He looks pretty thick, but not out of shape. He may have a bit of a gut but hey, dont we all? lol

He is in great game shape

He has been training with Raef LaFrentz since he got to Portland. They have been watching movies, waiting for buses, whatever kind of work out that requires them to sit for long periods of time with out injuring a glut. Also, they often have money counting contests during this time.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

One of Diogu's knocks

Mainly from his Indiana days (which, in his defense, has mostly been filled with injuries) is a lack of work ethic. Maybe this isn’t true, and the Pacers were just frustrated with how often he’s been hurt along with how often Tinsley has been hurt and all the problems they’ve had in the recent past… I dunno.

I know I read/heard that, too lazy to find a link. But, I think he looks very soft right now, and while he’s naturally a hefty, big dude, he isn’t naturally a soft skinned lump like Z-Bo. Diogu has more natural BEEF to him, big bodied, but he looks out of shape right now.

Diogu has talent, and he can bang. If healthy, he can be a perfect change-of-pace back PF for us, or if we move Frye he can be the fulltime backup PF. He’ll rebound and get garbage buckets and all of that… he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy, and his work ethic during the summers and while injured has been question by the Pacers.

So, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, as who knows what was really going on, but in the back of my mind I’ll remember the previous doubts if he doesn’t seem to get in shape.

Because of his past injuries and predisposition to chubbiosity, I doubt he’s in game shape.

I heard LMA’s work ethic is so great, he doesn’t even THINK about posting without a link to back up his claim.

Looks like he's in shape to me

I mean, I guess it depends on what game we are talking about. Dude looks like he’s in football shape to me. He’s huge!

by danielfarrell on Jul 10, 2008 12:27 PM PDT reply actions

He looks slimer than the video of the press conference introducing them. Maybe that whole “camera adds 10 lbs” is true! Watching live though seemed as if he was carrying 15lbs too much, so (breaking out the slide rule) maybe he just needs to lose 5 lbs. Feelin better already!

Again..

not being a typo-Nazi, but ‘slimer’ is just as close to ‘slimier’ as it is to ‘slimmer’. Kind of funny.

There's a huge turnover for the #1 jersey

Rod Strickland randomly comes back in 2000-2001, then when he leaves Derek Anderson gets #1. The year Derek Anderson was released, Jack got it. Days after Jack left, Ike gets it.

He looks good to me

You raise an interesting question.

The team said that Diogu has a “tweaked” knee. Never heard of this medical condition before, but I’m pretty ignorant about medicine, and so surely there must be such a thing. Since the Quick podcast today (I think) said that the team views Diogu as our 11th man next season, and since this is what the team said, this is the easiest theory to buy.

A second theory, looking at the roster, is that the team is preparing Diogu for the injured or inactive list. This came to mind because the team can only carry 12 players on the active list, and they are over the limit. This theory does not seem plausible to me, because Diogu has a player option at the end of next season, and being on the injured or inactive list next season minimizes his value, because he would surely bolt after such treatment.

A final theory is that Mr. Pritchard is not yet done reshaping the roster for next year, and keeping Diogu off of the summer roster is a way to protect an asset he might want to trade. Mr. Pritchard has not yet satisfied Coach McMillan’s request for more veteran help, and he has dealt Coach with roster headache with 13 or 14 or 15 players—and more high caliber players than last season; we can expect less harmony and sunshine about minutes. And it is difficult to believe Mr. Pritchard will forego his long-apparent devotion to flexibility, by going into the season with every single roster slot filled. I can’t help wondering if having Outlaw and Webster here for a day or two with the Summer League team isn’t a mid-term checkup, to see which has progressed more with his homework assignment, so Mr. Pritchard can surmise which is the better candidate to move. Let’s see; the team has 3 centers (with LeFrentz, if anyone, most likely to move), 3 power forwards (with the trade choice probably between Diogu and Frye, according to this conspiracy theory), 3 small forwards (looks like it’s a choice between Outlaw and Webster) and 3 point guards (with Sergio or Blake as the most likely candidates for a trade) under contract now, and with a fourth (Kopenan) getting serious consideration.

I don’t know. It is completely plausible that there will be no more roster changes before the trading deadline next season, and that a tweak is just a tweak. Occam’s Razor says the tweak theory is the most likely. All of us fans are justly enamored with our shiny new roster anyway, and want it to stay the way it is, so we can fantasize about World Domination a bit longer before we have to deal with the reality of building chemistry all over again and getting some experience for all of those rookies. But I wouldn’t be completely surprised with another, ahem, roster adjustment between now and the first week or so after Summer League.

I haven't heard much Ike talk

I also haven’t read much of BE over the past week with being busy and all. I found this from his rookie seaon which, like all highlight videos, makes him look pretty impressive as a rookie.

Anyone, other than Mortimer (I read your comments so I know what you think. That doesn’t mean you can’t comment, I just wanted you to know I was reading.), think he has the capability to unseat Frye and be the Millsap/Bass/Maxiell guy we are looking for?

Nice

Ha is in the video just after the 2 minute mark.

This is not good and neither is this. I’m excited to have a bruiser on the roster and someone with a few years in the league. I don’t see him taking Frye’s spot because he can’t stay healthy. But if he’s that jerk that we have come of the bench to punish the other team, then I think he could last a full season.

You know I still love you. Hugs.

I saw those two as well. D Williams was already dunking by the time he came over which is the bad part of the play, he was late rotating. It wasn’t like he drove at him and dunked over him.

The Gay dunk, typing that made me laugh, and thinking about you laughing at my typing about laughing about typing that made me laugh again. Anyway, the Gay dunk, I can’t stop laughing when I type that. I must be tired. One last time… the Gay dunk, I can’t go on…
