Baron Davis signs with Clippers

Wow... I guess we won't have to worry as much about the Warriors next year, but if Brand resigns with the Clippers than they could become a playoff threat. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3470016

I thought that both Davis and especially Brand were crazy not to stay with their current contracts, but I guess they both might end up getting more money.

That was quick

I guess he thought 24 hours was enough time to make it seem like he sincerely wanted to return to the Warriors.

You know what? I bet he gets a standing O when the Clips head to the Bay area next year.

Yes people will stand

to throw beer and hotdogs at him. GSW fans are pretty displeased with him. This could be better for the team in the long run but most feel betrayed.

From having $17.8M next season on sunday...

to becoming a free agent, to signing with another team within 24 hours?

You saw that coming? Did you also see 5years/$65M?

by you'vegottomakeyourfreethrows on Jul 1, 2008 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

well generally

if someone opts out of a huge contract like that, they already have a handshake deal in hand. I expected it was with the Warriors though.

I guess I did too...

that’s why it caught me off guard. Not that I closely follow that guy or anything… who are we talking about again?

Baron is from LA

Loves LA. Told the media he loved the Clippers organization. Just produced and released a movie about (you guessed it) LA.

So, yes, I did see this coming. See my comment above.

Yeah, in hindsight, he does LOVE the limelight

I just thought he might be aware that Nellyball made him look so much better.

Maggette can't be resigned I believe

by the Clips. FYI only

Also

I believe the Clips already renounced their rights to Livingston.

They didn't make him a qualifying offer, so now he is unrestricted

He would have been due way too much money considering the risk after his injury. Which basically amounts to “renouncing” him, but they said they would like to bring him back for less money.

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

by Norsktroll on Jul 1, 2008 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Yowza.

I can’t believe he bolted from GS so fast. I guess that last six months were as bad to him as he’d hinted.

The Clippers make a desperate stab at the playoffs with this move. If he and Brand are back, they’ve got a chance this year.

But Baron has been injured plenty. It wouldn’t be surprising if, in 3 years, he looks like latter-day Gary Payton on the Heat.

Clippers fans have to be thrilled.

by Timmay! on Jul 1, 2008 5:54 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed.

In a previous thread this week, I said he’d make a great addition to the team if he was willing to fit a role. I’ve seen him play a lot and his energy (and enjoyment) is amazing.

But he didn’t want a role in GS (since Ellis is taking over), so he gets a shot at being “The Man” in LA. Good luck to him. Except when it involves Portland.

Monta isn't a PG

He’s a short shooting guard that can’t shoot. I’d rather have Baron Davis over him any day.

well yah

thats what we did when we drafted oden, right? I remember before the draft, my blazer mentor was poring through oden history, and came to the conclution that he would be injured but we had to take the risk

Blazers have competition for the playoffs

PG: Baron Davis
SG: Cuttino Mobley
SF: Al Thornton
PF: Elton Brand
C: Chris Kamen

Bench: Quinton Ross, Tim Thomas, Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan, Brevin Knight

They are a legit threat in the West if they can stay healthy and gel together. That is a very dangerous defensive team. I think the Blazers road to the playoffs just got tougher.

by blzrfan on Jul 1, 2008 6:12 PM PDT reply actions

Meh

That team seems to be better on paper then in reality. Cuttino Mobley is awful and I think its arguable that Golden State was better last year with Monta Ellis on the floor than Baron.

by clydeshairline on Jul 1, 2008 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

This fails to take into the Clipper curse

Someone is going to suffer a near fatal injury. Maybe Baron Davis blows out his ACL after being struck from a shuriken to the knee. Chris Mullen knows ninjas.

You homers all say it looks good on paper, how about the Blazers then?

Everybody seems to ride the Blazers jock even though they haven’t played a game together. The Blazers are young and talented, but also have injury risks as well. The Clippers have proven veterans with excellent rebounding and interior defense. I shutter to think Blake or Bayless try to contain Baron Davis in that lineup.

BINGO, BANGO, BONGO

by blzrfan on Jul 1, 2008 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

No one said any different

And Roy, LMA, Travis, Martell, Pryzbilla, Blake, and Frye have all played game together with a proven system in place.

The clips lost Maggette their leading scorer from last year, they didn’t have any sort of offensive scheme set in place and won like 20 games last year. That’s a little different. How will Thorton play now that he is in the starting lineup in his second year, and last year he could jack up any shot he wanted what about now? Oh and besides Gordan who can actually shoot the 3?

Blazers also lost a key player

JJ1 was an important contributor to Blazer wins. He played in the 4th quarter and made timely 3-pointers. While Maggette is a nice player, he is no where near the value of Baron Davis. They won 20 games with Dickau starting and without Brand. Kamen was injured most of the season as well. I think the Clippers have a pretty good lineup and will challenge the Blazers for playoff positioning.

Maggette was a 24pgg scorer last season

Jack was a 9ppg scorer. He is being replaced by the 2nd best point guard in the draft and the best player in Europe.

And the clips always have injury problems. Besides 2004, when was the last time the Clips had a healthy roster?

Maggette is a nice player

Nobody thinks Maggette has the same impact as Baron Davis. Maggette scored points because he was their only option on offense. Plus Al Thornton is also a promising prospect at SF. You add Eric Gordon(picked before Bayless), an NBA-ready shooter to the bench, they’re going to make noise next year.

Blazers have the same health concerns as Clippers. Greg Oden is coming off major knee surgery and rehab. Pryz has history of injuries. Clippers are paper tigers, but so are the Blazers.

Maggette was padding his stats the whole season on a lottery team

He’s never averaged anything close to that in his career, and has in fact been a 6th man for the Clippers on more than one occasion. He is a great slasher, and is adept at getting to the line. He can’t shoot, and is one of the dumber (in terms of bball IQ) players in the league.

Its crazy how teams can go from projected cellar dwellers to legitimate threats. Can the East please take some of this Free Agent talent away from the West??!? for God’s SAKES!!!
And how is Baron Davis getting signed for half of what Arenas makes? Arenas may be younger, though not by much, but he just came off a major injury. I think BD is more of an impact player than Zero

by Jiggamant on Jul 1, 2008 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

So they can sign Brand

Basically Brand convinced Baron to come over and play in LAC, I think Baron thought that the Clips would be more of a legit contender than the Warriors.

And wow the Wiz are offering Gil, 125 for 6 years. That’s obscene. My poor wizards, forever doomed to 1 and outs in the playoffs.

I wonder if he doesn't realize that his body

is breaking down and taking 60 mil guaranteed is a better deal than taking 18 mil, getting a career ending injury and being done.

by raoulduke on Jul 1, 2008 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

yea,

but the Wiz were apparently courting him for 105 or some ridiculous number?

by premthegrem on Jul 1, 2008 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

all about the benjamins

Boom Dizzle was pissed that the Warriors were lowballing him in contract extension talks, and saw the writing on the wall that the Warriors were looking to take a step back this season and reload with their young guys. Davis saw the chance to head home and jumped at it. $65 mil was more than he was going to get from the Warriors even factoring in the $17.5 mil he left on the table to opt out. Smart move all around, looks like Mullin’s lowballing strategy backfired this time. Then again, I think this works out well for them also, considering they seem to be ok with another year in the lottery if they can pick up a good pick next year. Lots of good PGs in next year’s draft.
This also makes me happy because I live in Oakland so it means when the Blazers come to town I get to see them win.
For the record, I agree that this gives the Clips a great shot at the playoffs, even some playoff wins. And the fun is just getting started …
