"Anatomy of Pritchslap" got a response from Charlotte.
The article "Anatomy of Pritchslap", that was writen by Ben, got a response from Charlotte fans. They basicly belive that Larry brown wanted DJ, but Jordan wanted Westbrook. There was a deal that would sent Westbrook to Charlotte, but they had to give up alot for him, so it didnt go thru. Here are some of the responses from Bobcats fans that read the "Anatomy of Pritchslap". Here we go.
"my god what a piece of garbage. i am really starting to dislike 99% of blazer fans.maybe, just maybe, charlotte wanted augustine over bayless and could give two **** about what the pacers, nets kings and blazers did in the next 4 picks. maybe just maybe, KP, being the smart gm that he is knew that after the bucks took alexander at 8, augustine, bayless and lopez were still left on the board. he wanted a pg and would gladly take either bayless or augustine. knowing the nets would not take a pg since they just traded for devin harris and needed a center, KP did some 1st grade math and figured out that if he could get to 11 he would most likely get either augustine or bayless. so he calls LB...larry bird (not larry brown) and makes a deal. there was no need for him to panic and make a deal with the bobcats, especially, knowing larry brown and his preference for pass first pgs. of course he also could have read anyone of a dozen papers last week and known that LB was very high on augustine as well. come on people. sometimes the most logical explanation is the right one." Wow....exhibbit 1a for the case that blogs are journalistically irresponsible......
Seems a bit irresponsible to me to accuse Kevin Pritchard of what amounts to fraud, (making a legally binding verbal contract intending all the while to back out) with 0 evidence.
This is the kind of thing that would cost draft picks if it came out.......I could see the NBA giving Portland the Joe Smith/Minnesota Treatment AND forcing the trade through.
Also...I'm not sure if this kind of thing is even possible....We'd have to ask someone more in the know, but I imagine that in the cases where Team A picks a player for Team B, both parties call the league to confirm the deal first." "There was no way Charlotte was going to select Bayless or Lopez. Okafor is a center. He sucks at Power Forward. Lopez can't play PF. So why take Lopez to be the third center behind Nazr?
Bayless is not a PG, hes a combo guard who can handle the ball. Charlotte doesn't need one of those, they have one (Felton). Charlotte has been searching everyhwere for a true, pass-first PG since Knight left, and they went out and got one.
There is a lot of bias against MJ because of the decisions he has made in Washington. The only bad decision he has made in Charlotte was hiring Sam Vincent, but I believe he wanted LB last year but LB said no. Now he has a great coach. The J-Rich trade was brilliant.
Blazer fans think they could have had a deal with Charlotte because they think they wanted Jarrett Jack. That is not the case. Jack paired with Felton is not a good PG combo at all. Both had limited court vision, take too many shots, and can't finish. Jack would quit the NBA if he had to play for LB.
Again I think a lot of this "What is Charlotte doing?" is accredited to the media and their total lack of a clue to what the Charlotte Bobcats are. They think Okafor can play PF, when thats like asking Ben Wallace in his prime to play PF. They think Felton is an up and coming PG, when in reality he has probably peaked and is an average PG at best in a PG's league. They have no clue who is Ajinca is or why LB would pick him. So if fans of other teams try to pass off blogs as smart information, you should probably stop following the media to get your Bobcats information." "Just out of curiosity, why would Jordan want Westbrook if we turned down Bayless becasue he's a "combo that can handle the ball"?
Who knows if this is true. I can see DJ preferring Portland due to there not being any competition for "future" (maybe that's why he looked so down on draft night). We might possibly have pulled Frye and Jack out of the deal as well as the 13th, which would have went a long way in helping out our 4/5 position. Add to that LB seeming to prefer vets (not saying he doesn't play rooks...agreed with Walt's post above) and it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Doesn't matter now anyway as I think DJ fills a need and will fit in fine with us. Yet to see what happens with Ajinca; hopefully he'll come in and be more ready than a lot think.
I asked this in the draft thread, but is MJ/LB that transparent leading up to the draft? Is this a good think if so? I thought MJ was a gambler...if this is how he gambles then I'm surprised he hasn't went thru all that NIKE money no matter how much it is."

Ben already addressed this, scroll down the front page
- There were talks at some point in the draft process with the Bobcats, however there was no standing offer and no deal on the table for Augustin at the time the rumor was made public. It is possible that Charlotte drafted Augustin with the intention of trading him to Portland.—The Augustin rumor originated from indirect communication (not a telephone call). It was not able to be corrected prior to it becoming more widely known due to the speed with which rumors circulate as previously described.
—Given the rumor’s release and its implications, the organization and all media involved made every effort to correct the record regarding Augustin ASAP, taking the step of confirming the Bayless trade as quickly as possible.
Blazer fans would react the same if a fan of another team speculated their GM snookered Pritchard.

But you have to go to RealGM. com, then go to Bobcats site, and look for ” Was the #9 pick for DJ Augustin a deal that went wrong?”. If you know what I saying.

I get in a lot of trouble for my opinions on matters such as these
But, man oh man, would it be hard to like Blazers fans if I rooted for another team.
This kind of sentiment has been all over the national media and I totally understand it.
I don’t know that it should upset us, though: I mean, our team is in a real good place.
Just don’t expect the Portland-fan-Kevin-Pritchard-Paul-Allen love-in to generate a lot of empathy from the NBA for the rose city.

nope
this is the kind of sentiment that superfreak fans (like you and I) may have, but how much of the population are we? 1%? 5%? No way more than 10%.
That’s a fraction.
Everyone needs to quit worrying about the rest of the league hating on us. They’re going to if we start winning championships anyway. Might as well get used to it.
Who cares if they “hate” us anyway? You’re not there, and they’re not here… I’m just sayin’.

Our fans are probably the most arrogant fans of a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in years. I get embarrassed by some of the things I read on the internet that are posted by our fans.

Or
They’ll start an email writing campaign to defend the skill and value of a player with one good knee and zero NBA game experience.
Or they’ll flood other teams’ blogs with impassioned explanations of why Martell for Steve Nash is an equal value trade and, based on potential alone, the Blazers might turn this trade down outright to wait and see if they can get LeBron.

I hope you really appreciate this comment because it's going to take me a long time to compile.
Basketbawful:
Portland Tradeblazers 2K8: Turned the 13th into a top lottery pick (by trading Brandon Rush for Jerryd Bayless, who was projected top-five) and the 24th pick into a lottery pick (by trading for Darrell Arthur, a projected lottery guy, who they then traded to Houston) and then escaped the 2nd round with 4 future picks! Not to mention they unloaded Jarrett Jack in the process. Portland is overflowing with loot they’ve pillaged from inept GMs over the years. Kevin Pritchard is a genius, and I kind of hate him.
Bill Simmons:
Within about two more years, they’ll be acting like one of those obnoxious Monopoly competitors who has more money and property than everyone else, giggles every time you land on their hotels and says things like, “Here’s $200, will you roll the dice for me?” You can’t blame them, but at the same time, you want to punch them in the face. That’s where we’re headed.
BlogaBull:
It’s one thing to worship at the feet of your “shrewd” GM who won the lottery when Greg Oden comes out. To believe that you have it so good to actually feel sorry for other fans is despicable. Hey guys, how about waiting for Jesus Pritchard’s plan to come to fruition first? Hate to see what’s going to happen a couple years down the road when Durant’s in MVP contention and Oden’s limping walk appropriately fits with the septuagenarian look of his face.

Rec'd
Thank you… I truly appreciate your hard work.
With all due respect, can I counter?
I look at the first two as a more honorable hatred. They don’t specifically say that we fans our out of control… they (two NBA experts [self proclaimed or not I don’t know]) seem to agree with many in here that our team is stacked with talent and assets. I don’t think either of them actually have disdain for us.
As for the other two… BlogaBull, though a great blog with lots of knowledgable fans, is really sour right now. They looked at that loss to us in Chicago in OT last year as the worst loss in years. They also looked at the Tyrus-for-LMA trade as a PaxWax (the BlogaBull version of the Pritchslap… I don’t know if they actually use that verbage, but I know you understand what I’m getting at), and were and still do talk way too much trash about how Tyrus is better. I think we all know that so far, we got the better end of that deal. Now RealGM… so one person made some silly comment. He/she got upset over the comments of one or maybe a few. If you keep reading BlogaBull, you’ll probably find a few people whose comments you don’t like, and quite possibly could end up feeling like you didn’t care for 99% of those fans.
In fact, if you haven’t read it yet, search their archives for the post right after we beat them in Chicago… in fact, I’ll do it for you. You worked for me, I’ll work for you.
... .... ..... .... ...
Like you before me, you’d better appreciate this… I had to dig deep. This was 1988 posts ago on this site (we’ve had 1988 posts since Jan 4!!!). It has the link to the BlogaBull thread. It’s a very entertaining read if you haven’t read it.

+1
Thanks for the link—it was worth the work.
I think unfortunately we may kind of secretly agree. Which is too bad because I like a good, long, pointless argument. The fact that the Blazers have a fantastic GM, committed ownership, and a Devil Rays-like stockpile of young talent earns us respect from the league. Furthermore, the excitement surrounding our young and talented team rubs off on the fans in the area who are coming back strong. Really, we have very reason to be happy with our situation and we display our satisfaction liberally on the internet (BE probably one of if not the strongest supported SN blog).
And all that causes the rest of the league to hate us.
What we may disagree on is what Tom alluded to above: our habit of acting like arrogant jerks to other fans when they talk about the trailblazers. Seriously, if every time someone posted a fanpost on BE that involved the bulls all of the Chicago fans came in here and flooded the site with comments we would get po’ed too.

I think I'm finally getting where you're at with this.
I go to other sites and lurk, but rarely post. I’m actually surprised at how many BEdgers I see posting at other sites.
I saw a post the other day at the Kings blog from a BEdger that I found to be very condescending, even though I don’t think that’s what the poster was going for.
I misunderstood. I thought you were concerned about what fans post here on the BEdge. I think we should state our stance even if it is totally homeristic and arrogant here… after all, that’s kinda what it’s for. I can even see defending our team on other sites with rational arguments. But going to another team’s site and straight dropping “You’ve been Pritchslapped” would embarrass me, too.
Good discussion.

Portland is like the little West Coast city that could… or couldn’t, in this case.
For the sportsfans, it’s been one tease after another, one heartbreak after another. I think the Dark Ages (2001-2005) really took a toll on our general psyche. And now that things have changed so favorably, our long-denied thirst for greatness, or even competitiveness, has led we as a people to be total gluttons, total pigs of all that feels so good.
All that said, it is the internet, and anyone with a library card gets to add stuff to it. That’s just the way it is. And yes, I’m saying this as though I’ve never said anything that embarrassed you.

Why is the Bayless trade still unofficial though?
Will it not be official till July 9th or something? I heard the salaries for 08-09 don’t apply till that date, is that right?
That's the word on the street, yes
They can’t talk about Bay-bay till the new season’s contracts kick in, so that’s why we haven’t had the press conference and the photo ops and the other stuff.
I mean, it could be because he might be dealt, but that wouldn’t be until July 9th either because we don’t own him until then.
Hopefully, Tom Penn didn’t forget to carry the 7 and didn’t mess up the salaries in the trade, because it would be annoying to go back on the deal now!

Fan blogs like BE are by and for the fans of particular teams. Fan is short for fanatic, right? That implies a certain high level of enthusiasm and low level of objectivity. Fans who visit the fan blogs of other teams should take what they read with good humor and a grain of salt. Okay, a bag of salt, whatever.
That being said, I can see how other fans might get offended by the term “pritchslap,” especially when it is applied to their team’s GM. The truth is that KP has never and will never rip-off another GM. When he closes a deal, the other GM believes at the time that he is getting a good deal. When that proves not to be the case, it’s not because KP tricked him, it’s because the GM showed poor judgment, didn’t do his homework, was overruled by his management team and/or owner, or subsequent events (e.g., injury) made the trade less favorable.
As I recall through my rose-city-colored glasses, the quirky, underdog Blazers’ championship team was the delight of the league back then. There was even an episode of “The White Shadow” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shadow) in which Ken Howard says he loves three things, the third one being the Portland Trailblazers. I think NBA fans would enjoy seeing Portland back in title contention each year, especially if we’re beating on the Team that Must Not Be Named. They’ll be less enamored of the Blazers if their fans acquire the rep of that other team.
"I woke up this morning, Barbosa and eggs in my bed." --BlueBooYay
I agree
I’ve been thinking we should lay off the whole “pritchslap” thing a bit. It could turn out to be something that’ll turn on us and bite our backsides. I can see how fans of other teams would take offense of the term, especially when applied to a particular and supposedly unsavory transaction involving their team. It makes us come across as arrogant punks laughing at the rest of the league as we ride in the wake of our GM’s brilliance.
Wherever the term was coined, it is spreading like wildfire through the media (I believe I even heard it mentioned on ESPN). I don’t think this is a good thing. You can say, “Big deal. I don’t care what non-Blazer fans think.” But what of other teams GM’s and owners, etc.? Do you think potential trading partners of the Blazers will want to risk becoming a potential laughing stock by having the term “pritchslap” applied to them? I wouldn’t. So, I think the larger this gets, the more the bridges will burn. We, the fans could ruin the future effectiveness of KP by keeping on this way.
We pride ourselves on having talented yet humble players on our team. Shouldn’t we also pride ourselves on being that same sort of fan?
"...and that loud noise you hear coming is the Portland Trailblazers." - Charles Barkley
Yea, I just
don’t think we’re used to the lime-light (which we haven’t earned yet) or the fact that other teams actually read or care about what we have to say. I think everyone here kind of felt like it was an in-thing (that KP has made some great trades) that has now become an out-thing.
Jaws were hitting the floor as Greg repeatedly attempted to tear the rim off the backboard...
Oh. Dear. God.
It could turn out to be something that’ll turn on us and bite our backsides.
What?! How is that? Will other teams’ fans come over to our message board and trash us? Will there be a breakdance-fight? Some sort of “meet me at the malt shop” threat? I really see NO potential consequences for being contentiously candid on BEdge or Sportsnation proper. Really – what is one potential real-world effect that could be construed as “backside-biting”? And if you’re implying the following is a realistic repercussion of sports fans making FanPosts on a Blazer fan site..
Do you think potential trading partners of the Blazers will want to risk becoming a potential laughing stock by having the term "pritchslap" applied to them?
Please. You’re a millionaire owner/GM of a billion-dollar organization and you’re afraid a bunch of anonymous commenters with quirky avatars will call you names?! To put it another way, if I was KP and considering a trade, I wouldn’t be like “wow, hope I don’t catch heat with the BEdgers if this goes south”. Why would someone who’s even further removed? BEdger opinions are really only valued by BEdgers and a very select outside group. No one involved with basketball, especially the higher-ups, give two expletives.
In fact, it’s attitudes like the one displayed in your comment that are DRIVING this whole “Blazer fans are smug” thing. If I was a Bulls fan and I read your comment fretting over “what to do about the ‘Pritchslap’ phenomenon” and “what if it sours a potential trade?” I’d be like, “typical full-of-yourself Blazer fan”. Let’s all relax and stop overvaluing this rich, but ultimately limited, culture on BEdge.
"Well, Travis just showed us that we can go to Travis Outlaw." - Nate McMillan
Wow. Holy. Zeus.
First. Why are you responding to TheOdenator when you’re clearly attacking my comments?
Second. Maybe I wasn’t clear enough, but you have missed and misunderstood the entire point I was trying to make. I will try to clear that up here while remaining civil.
Pritchslap was just a BEdge thing in the beginning, clever and cute because “Pritch” rhymes with “bitch.” No harm. All for fun. Of course the GM’s of the world wouldn’t care or even notice what us low-life BEdgers have to say. But KP is getting quite the reputation around the league and with the media. And when national media starts using the word we coined, well it could be an entirely different matter. Nobody, especially the rich, appreciate looking the fool in the public eye.
So, I was merely speculating that if this gets much larger (nationally, of course, with people like Steven A. blasting the other GM’s IQ, etc.) it might make other GM’s less inclined to deal with us. I could be wrong about that. But it seems a possibility to me. But if it does turn out that way, then in that sense “Pritchslap” did turn around to “bite our/Blazers backsides” instead.
I’ve never cared for the word, deriving as it did from where it did, so the first paragraph of my comment is colored by my own personal feelings on the subject. I’ve been to the other fan sites and read their comments and can see where they’re coming from. I’m not saying everybody who uses that word uses it in a derogatory fashion, but it can come across that way. You and anyone else can disagree with me if you want. It’s cool with me. In fact, use the word all you want in any way you want. The word has already spread, so may as well.
Me? I will sit back in my typical Blazer-fan smugness, relishing all the thngs KP does for us while hoping he’ll be able to continue doing so for many years to come. But I will try to stay humble. Or not. Depends on how much I’ve had to drink.
"...and that loud noise you hear coming is the Portland Trailblazers." - Charles Barkley
Egad. Sanctified. Quetzalcoatl.
I was a little exuberant in my response, but I didn’t mean to come off as attacking anyone’s comment, even yours. I find this whole thing really frustrating, though.
I agree with you on KP’s rep (that he has one and it’s for his draft-trade savvy). Were I a GM, I may or may not be hesitant to do business with him for that reason, but:
1) GMs do (or at least should) value serving their franchise over how they’re viewed publicly.
2) Were a GM to come off as foolish from a trade, it would be because of the trade, not because of being called names in the other team’s fanboards.
C) Why do you say that the rich especially don’t like looking foolish? I don’t like it, and I’m broke.
Apparently, it’s just a case of me being as sick of people being worried about “Pritchslap” as you’re sick of “Pritchslap”, and that’s fine. Sorry if I offended you, I guess I was just going overboard a little there. Also, I think I hadn’t quite gotten the main point of your comment until connecting the dots with your second one, for what it’s worth.
"Well, Travis just showed us that we can go to Travis Outlaw." - Nate McMillan
Can I join?
I’m on record as hating the term, but I think 12sharks is right about this aspect of it.
A little over a year ago, everyone was making fun of Danny Ainge for being a stupid GM. And not just on a blog somewhere, either, he was getting serious criticism in national media at times.
Did that stop him from making deals for fear of being made fun of in the media?
Did Isiah stop making deals for that reason?
I think we can put that argument to rest. The term isn’t classy, it doesn’t raise the bar on dialogue, and it has very offensive origins and connotations, and for those reasons KP doesn’t like it, but it isn’t likely to hinder him in his task at all.
Other people don't have as much practice at being wrong as I do -- HT, timbo
You're probably right.
But just maybe if their reputations were better and they were more respected, they would have been able to get better deals, better players for less given up. Maybe Isiah would be like a god to the Knickfans, standing on the sidelines holding the championship cup high to ringing cheers. Who knows? Maybe if a tiny tremor hadn’t started a rockslide into the road, I wouldn’t have had to detour so far out of my way, and the poor sap who was crushed beneath it would still be alive.
I know, I know. Reaching there, but still. A shout can start a stampede.
Really, I don’t think any harm will come of this. I just think it’s a possibility. I don’t want to ever see KP forced to making desperate deals in a losing bid to save his team and career, turned on and hated by booing Blazer fans. Let’s leave that nightmare in the East. Let’s not sully what he’s accomplished by using a word he himself despises to sum up what he’s achieved. It’s like blaspheming in a church.
Anyway, I’ve probably said enough. Or too much. Been that kind of day. Maybe I should’ve read my horoscope or something.
