The Junk Drawer--July 1st, 2008

This is a new idea...a daily fanpost where you can put all of your thoughts that maybe don't require full fanposts of their own but still would make interesting discussion.  As long as the general site civility rules are followed I see no pressing need to keep comments here strictly on-topic either.  It's called the "Junk Drawer" after all.  That means you can get a little wacky.

We'll see how it goes.  If we get enough comments and if this allows more fanposts to stay on the front page longer we'll keep it up.

Welcome to Blazers Edge!

Have a good time discussing the Portlandia Trailing Blazers, and I hope you enjoy yourself.

I happen to like the Blazers very much, and I don’t mind telling you that even though we just met.

Again, welcome to Blazers Edge!

I happen to like the Blazers very much, and I don’t mind telling you that even though we just met.

Again, welcome to Blazers Edge!

This will become my standard greeting for meeting the new Bedgers, since so many are joining in on the fun every day. Also, this way I don’t greet someone better than someone else, and no one ends up hating me like Bow4meow does. He’s petitioning the local government to lay down new train tracks right through my living room, and then he’s going to crush me under a speeding train he is driving. HE HATES ME I TELL YOU.

There’s lots of late night beasts here. I gotta be up sorta early, so I’m gonna head to bed, but I had to greet a new member with love and care. So, welcome!

I cant beliebve you called me out like that

first off, your statement that I hate you is absolutely false. I entirely appreciate you and your long-winded posts… Just because I dont see eye-to-eye with you on everything red and black is no reason to say I hate you. I dont believe in hate. Hate is not the truth, therefore it is a lie. Hate is the wet blanket people too lazy to identify their feelings use to mask their own inner turmoil. I feel bad just being accused of hate, but I assure your projection is unwarranted.

I feel the bad rap is on me. As a Yahoo PTB message board transplant, I have found the adjustment from an anything goes/too often flame warring with trolls environment, to the civilized demeanor on the Bedge not so easy a transition. I really have tried to restrain my enthusiasm but even eliminating cursery and malcontent. my sarcastic tone still comes thru like a painted stain. Its not like I try to be that way, I just am.

Mortey, Im sorry if I ever offended you, or that I try to knock down the pillars you build your posts on. Its all for the sake of representing the PTB, and being civil does not include feeling obligated to agree with everyone or laugh at anyones morbid sense of humor (not you.)

To: MORTIMER-- ragging on Tom in Guam is my shtick

Its always right after you hit the post button that you realize the mistake. Part of me knew it was a gag, at the same time I had to assume some personal responsibilty. Mortimer, something needs said.
Lets state the obvious. I love the PTB. Always have. My friends cant keep up with me on PTB related conversations. One friend thinks Brandon Roy is the teams future PG. So is it that hard a “stretch” to accept why I come to the Bedge for salvation. I can come to the Bedge anytime and find intriguing if not illuminating dialogue.

Plus, not everyone here is recent conglomerate. Know matter how much I think I know, someone out there has been there longer then me. I barely missed the inception but that doesnt mean I dont know what rose red and black means.

Sorry I got bent out of shape about the hater remark, its just I want to be thought of as a PTB radical not a terrorist.

CORY MAGGETTE

Now that free agency is here, is this a guy we would be willing to get in a sign and trade with the Clippers? He opted out of his contract. He is 28-29 years old, is a SF, very athletic, slashes to the basket, and could possibly be a good addition to our team. I’ve heard nothing about trying to get this guy. I know he doesn’t get along with Dunleavy, so perhaps that is a red flag. Perhaps he doesn’t fit into the culture. I have no idea how much $$$ he wants, but perhaps we could re-sign James Jones, and then add Martell Webster and Sergio Rodriguez to the mix, and then get Maggette and a draft pick in return. Thoughts?

Can I buy you a fish sandwich?

by silkybrown on Jul 1, 2008 3:36 AM PDT reply actions

He's a nice SF to have

Draws tons of fouls and goes to the free throw line. Unfortunately his skills don’t mesh well with the team. He doesn’t have a 3 point shot and needs the ball in his hands to score. I think the Blazers have enough offensive firepower and SF who can play off the ball knocking down 3s fits the best. Maggette will probably get more money this year, somewhere around 8-10 million.

repeating fanposts

you are correct, sir. whats worse is seeing identical posts on the same page spaced hours or less apart. I know because the PTB are the future dynasty of the NBA and that alot of the previously disenfranchised plus the predictable band waggoners arrive, the sites going to explode with replication.

I could talk all day about why the core 4 include Travis, and often find myself repeating myself repeating myself…. see… its an almost mystical effect. The point is the Junk Drawer is a great idea.

I´ve asked Paco more for caricatures.

Blazer roster´s butts caricatures. Do you have the 15 real butts photos or models?. I have Rudy´s butt and we´ll do a photo, so I only need 14 more. Once we have all the caricatures we´ll do a butt caricature contest. Everybody will send the photo of his butt to Dave who will post them in the main page between the players butts (this will get national even worldwide attention to the blog ). The contender who match more photos and caricatures wins the contest. Special Nate´s butt caricature prize for the contender who guess what´s Dave´s butt, so we can finally have his photo and recognize him.

Oh dear

Now I have to decide what might make interesting conversation, but doesn’t deserve a fanpost. May we have guidelines, please? (only half kidding here)

I thought links and such that didn’t call for discussion should be fanshots, but many people put such links in fanposts. But since fanshots only appear with the main page they appear to disappear and don’t get read by as many people as they should. I’ve seen some fanshot topics appear as fanposts well after the original posting … and still not bringing much conversation. Maybe we should abandon fanposts all together and have a weekly Post Your Links Here fanpost. (OTOH, I think we tried that months ago and it didn’t fly.)

SBN says : “FanShots – Share Your Discoveries

You know that video you found while searching YouTube for highlights of your favorite player? You don’t need a full FanPost—the video speaks for itself. FanShots let you easily share quick hits like these with everyone on the blog.”

That goes for preventing suicides with humor or preventing humor with suicides… if you wanna share it but not discuss it then it should be a FanShot. According to them.

And I see that in my post I suggested doing away with FanPosts and really meant doing away with FanShots. At least they did away with diaries…

Deron Williams...

Did any one else hear Quicks interview on 1080 Friday? He intimated that the Blazers have a plan in place to go after Deron Williams. He said it all hinges on whether he signs an extension with Utah this off season.

He made some mysterious comments regarding a loop hole in the rule book and Paul Allens money. The point here is he made it sound like the Blazers had a plan to get him this year, not next when he’s a free agent. Did anyone else hear the interview, did I hear it wrong? How would it be possible to get Deron Williams before he becomes a free agent? I looked around and didn’t find any posts about this, and well, this is the junk drawer…

by monkeybones on Jul 1, 2008 8:20 AM PDT reply actions

trade or sign&trade

Deron would have to tell Utah that not only is he not extending this summer, but next summer he’ll just sign their Qualifying Offer and then be unrestricted in 2010 (when a lot of teams will likely have cap room). Utah could then decide, with his help perhaps, to try and trade him and get something back in return, rather than see him walk after two more years. Or they could call his bluff and try again next summer to sign him. Or barring that, the summer after. In both cases they can still pay him more money than anyone else, and even if he wants to leave it would be to his advantage to use Utah’s ability to pay him more money to orchestrate a sign and trade deal. Or maybe he decides he likes it afterall and stays.

by douglast on Jul 1, 2008 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Deron Williams a Blazer?

Highly improbable. Quick is always stirring up the rumors about PGs. First Chris Paul, now Deron Williams. I’m pretty sure they’re both going to sign extensions this summer preventing them from ever becoming a free agent.

by blzrfan on Jul 1, 2008 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Deron may have serious concerns about how good that team would be.

Blazermania - It's not just for die-hards anymore.

by Blazerholic on Jul 1, 2008 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Question:

When you say “it all hinges on whether he signs an extension with Utah this off season”,
does that mean the acquisition plan relies on Deron NOT being extended in the off-season?
Or does it REQUIRE him to be extended – an extend-and-trade scenario, where we trade players to Utah for Deron,
players matching not his current rookie-scale contract, but a bigger-salary extension?

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

by QualityPie on Jul 1, 2008 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Simple

No extension this year means Deron will be a restricted free agent next year. With a extension, his rookie scale contact glides right into his extension thus preventing him from free agency.

I heard it..

he did say “a guy LIKE Deron Williams” (but NOT Chris Paul), for what it’s worth… and he said they have something planned that can elevate them not only to a championship contender status, but literally a dynasty.

Then a posted what I heard, and a few people told me that Quick is a liar, and then I got the usual stuff about how Utah will never let him go, blah blah blah (of course they would never let him go, but if there is a way for him to go, then of course he’d at least consider it, right?)

I think something big might be going down on July 9th, and it’s something that has not yet been reported in the media. Wheeler hinted at it on his radio show too.

Eugene has been hosting the Olympic Track and Field Trials. It continues through this weekend. The locals have spruced up the facilities and the athletes are raving about the excellent conditions there. There have already been many world class performances and it looks like the US will be fielding a strong team. NBC and USA are televising the events.

Eugene also has the trials for 2012. The fans have been great and it appears Eugene is on the way to track and field supremacy again.

I’m a big fan of the re-imagined series:

At Center- Caprica 6 -This tall, blonde seductress brings height and cyclon enhanced strength to the center position
Power Forward – Chief Tyrol – His bulk and attitude make him the enforcer needed in this spot.
Small Forward – Helo. Tall, athletic, nice shooting touch (with a pistol at least), works well with Sharon/Boomer at the point.
Shooting Guard – Boomer – Good shooter (again, with a pistol), kinda hot, good size.
Point Guard – Lee Adama. Excellent decision-making skills. Can run a team. Lost weight so he’s back in good physical condition.

What’s the best way to sleep at your desk at work and not get caught?

Learn to sleep with your head propped up,balanced cupped in your hands...

your forearms at about a 45 degree angle to the surface.

Final touch: tattoo fake eyeballs on your eyelids.

Work on the elbows

If you stop using moisterizer on your elbows and rough them up a bit then they could be the “hooks” half of a velcro system. All you’d have to do is strategically place the soft felty material to your desk.

Hope that helps.

Should the Blazers trade Sergio this summer?

He’s the 3rd PG on this team and has already pouted about playing time last season. Sergio won’t be happy about his role and could become a distraction. Maybe it’ll be better for Sergio and the Blazers to ship him to NY, Golden State, PHX, or WAS where his style of play will be utilized.

Rudy has said he is coming over, is there any reason to keep Sergio besides giving Rudy a spanish speaking teammate?

I can answer

First question – No, not until the trade deadline.

Second question – None that I can think of, but he should stay until the trade deadline. Rudy should have Portland figured out by then.

by tominhawaii on Jul 1, 2008 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

His salary is under $2 million

That’s less than the cost of a draft pick. There is no rush to get rid of him because he’s cheap and who wants him? It’s not like we can trade him for Chris Paul. Also there is a tiny chance that he will improve his game over the summer and will be worth something to the team. They players all like him and talk about him as part of the future. No link for you though.

Agent 0

Gil is allegedly being offered 6years/$127M (!!!) by the Wizards and 5/$101M by the Warriors (I think?)... is it me, or is that COMPLETELY CRAZY?

The guy can score, no doubt. He is better-than-average on the entertaining scale, yes. BUT 9 FIGURES OVER 5-6 YEARS? For a guy that played 13 games last year before undergoing microfracture surgery?

There was a good article linked on TrueHoop yesterday about this.

The gist is that maxing out Agent Zero is essentially signing a contract for first-round playoff exists as long as he’s on your team.

Gil means a lot to the Wizards, but if I was a fan I would be leery of giving someone with one knee that much money.

I will try to find a link to the original article.

Could be wrong

I’m pretty sure he didn’t endure micro. Just normal knee surgery and what not.

I’d expect the Wiz to do it, but it doesn’t mean I think it’s the right idea. Having your star player be kinda a ballhog and not play defense doesn’t always end well, even if he scores 30ppg.

He sure didn’t look good when he tried to come back, but he clearly came back too soon and now he is okay. Perhaps the Warriors offered him the big bucks to let Baron know they ain’t gonna be held hostage by him for a payday?

Arenas is a popular player who sells tickets. You’d think a team with Jamison, Caron, and Arenas could do some damage in the East, but except for a few stretches of play they are just flat out mediocre. I’d wanna find some way to get GOOD before locking up a player like him, even though he is talented.

If a player is cool and popular, SOMEONE will pay him too much somewhere.

I couldn’t remember if it was the microfracture type or not.

My junk drawer rant....

I like this idea Dave, so much in fact, that I will pollute this post with a meaningless rant.

Today on Overtime with Gavin Dawson, he said he would root for Rudy Fernandez over team USA, or something along those lines(I dont have a quote handy). He got a ton of flack for it on Wheels after Work(from callers) and I got to back up my fellow blazer nut. I fully plan on rooting for Rudy/Spain when they play USA.

First, USA has KXbe Bryant, call me unpatriotic(and you might be right), but I will never root for a team with KXbe BXan BXyant. Not going to happen. I know Nate is there, but its KXbe XXXX BXyant. Coommeeeee oooonnnnn…..

Second, I want to see Rudy drop 30+ in KXbe’s face. Just try and tell me that wouldnt be the sweetest thing ever. Really though, just try and tell me you dont want to see Rudy cross KXbe, step back and drop a 3 in his eye. Just try, please. Thanks for keeping it Real G Daws!!!!

Ru-Dizzle Fernandez

I’ll be rooting for Rudy and Spain this summer. Why can’t they go back to having amateur players on USA basketball? I think it’s easier rooting for an underdog US team with young stars than to watch a bunch of overpaid NBA players that only care about not getting hurt. OLE, OLE, OLE, OLE, OOOOO-LE, OOOOO-LE!

Despite being a l*ker, I cant think of anything the guy has ever done that could make anyone think him representing the United States of America is anything but a good thing.

who knows well other basketball different than NBA because he coached in Italy. The combination of this coach and the players of USA team is almost invencible, IMO.

What is Raef's value?

Is he worth trading this year oe waiting for contract to expire? Shouldnt Raef donate 99% of his salary to charity since he contributes barely 1% to make the team better. Is it fair to pay five dollars for a hotdog at the RG knowing Raef isnt doing anything but CTC’n?

by bow4meow on Jul 1, 2008 10:14 PM PDT reply actions

it's not his fault, though

I know you’re not really suggesting he give 99% of his salary to charity, but still. . . (well, you could be, I guess- and 1% of his salary is still about 3 times mine- wow, that’s ludicrous- I can’t believe I even support this league)
But anyway, he plays hard when he gets minutes, has a couple good games a year, and I’m impressed that he stays into the games and doesn’t whine about playing time.

by Section323 on Jul 1, 2008 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow. That disparity is unbelievable.

by einman77 on Jul 2, 2008 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

He should be the team chef

He can earn his money at the stove instead of sitting on the bench. I figure Pritchard will most likely let him expire unless a deal he cannot pass up comes along. At least he’s not complaining about playing time, he knows his role.

Stadium situation in Portland

The blessing that Paul Allen has bestowed upon Portlanders by paying for almost all of the cost of the Rose Garden has also been our curse, because now everybody has this mindset that the city will never, and should never, help to pay for any facility.

Now there are valid arguments why a city should or should not help to pay for a stadium, but hello, wake up people, EVERY OTHER CITY with MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL/MLS/AAA baseball, or any combination thereof, has spent HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars on public stadia.

I’m saying this now because I know every libertarian yay-hoo, and every borderline socialist who hates sports (and there are plenty of both types in the area) will be coming out of the woodwork soon when Merritt Paulson goes to the city with hat in hand to try to get some help to pay for converting PGE Park into an MLS/PSU football-only facility, and helping to build a smaller AAA baseball facility (please build it near the Rose Quarter or downtown, Merritt!!!).

We are going to hear how terrible it is for the city to commit funds for a stupid (fill in the blank) stadium, how they should pay for it themselves like Paul Allen did (as if every owner in pro sports was as rich as Paul Allen), how we can’t do blah blah in this economy, etc.

Now, let’s remember, Paul Allen did finally wise up and get the city of Seattle to kick in $300 million for Qwest Field, which is used, what, 15-20 times a year? Surely we can afford to have Portland kick in $50-$100 million to help build two facilities that will be used 120-150 times a year, can’t we?
