Trade Machine Pornography: A Poem (Song?)

A poem, as requested by TominHawaii concerning Blazers Fans' willingness to dump everyone we have for anyone else. I tried to fit in every point guard(-ish) type that fans have wanted to trade for since the Lottery happened, and that is a lot.

8 8 8 8

Hey guys, come now, let's admit it,
You've watched the pretty girls walk by.
You have dreamed what it would be like,
To stare them direct in the eye.

To have them and hold them closely,
Would be for you a great delight.
Until the one you're with sees you,
At which point you're now in a fight.

(Refrain)
For Blazer fans who go lusting,
A new point guard is that sexy girl.
Trade Machine's their pornography,
For one they'll give away the world.

It started innocent enough,
Lusting after Christopher Paul.
Thinking cap space ‘lone would net us,
The sexiest point of them all.

If that choice was too ambitious,
Deron Williams was also hot.
But barring GM witlessness,
All these dreams but accomplish naught.

Now disgruntled with what we have.
The girl we've got is far too plain.
The lust can not be satisfied,
Time to use Trade Machine again.

(Refrain)
For Blazer fans who go lusting,
A new point guard is that sexy girl.
Trade Machine's their pornography,
For one they'll give away the world.

Bench play is our greatest of strengths,
But lust of ours burns hot and bright.
Who can we quickly give away,
To fulfill our fickle hearts delight?

Calderon is somewhat sexy,
Devin Harris looks kinda fine.
Ellis and Barbosa aren't bad.
But to us would appear sublime.

But the cost, good Lord what a cost,
To get a breath of their fragrance.
We'd have to give up half the team
Our bench would be filled by vagrants.

(Refrain)
For Blazer fans who go lusting,
A new point guard is that sexy girl.
Trade Machine's their pornography,
For one they'll give away the world.

There are other hot girls out there,
But their presence is most baneful.
Their attitude will kill the mood,
And remind of days quite painful.

The Bulls would love to dump Hinrich,
His constant pouting's been that bad.
Baron, he disappears for days,
And doesn't always come back glad.

Gordon thinks he is number one,
And wants to get paid like it too.
Arenas is just plain crazy,
Our team would become quite a zoo.

(Refrain)
For Blazer fans who go lusting,
A new point guard is that sexy girl.
Trade Machine's their pornography,
For one they'll give away the world.

Billups looks pretty good right now,
But age is looming fast ahead.
Andre Miller was ne'er sexy,
And now he's almost nearly dead.

TJ Ford is an invalid,
He could die if he even fell.
Are we really quite that desperate?
Are we so quick our own to sell?

Apparently, the answer's yes,
Because we quickly pine away.
For Conley, Felton and Sessions,
Even Udrih has got some play.

(Refrain)
For Blazer fans who go lusting,
A new point guard is that sexy girl.
Trade Machine's their pornography,
For one they'll give away the world.

So desperate is the Blazer fan,
That we will look for sexy teens.
Rose and Mayo and Bayless tempt,
Even Westbrook is in our dreams.

But will even they satisfy?
All this is for just one reason.
Blazer fans do lust heavily,
Our own were "too plain" last season.

Fortunately, fans aren't in charge,
KP's there to keep us steady.
If we bring our points back next year,
That will be the move that's most heady.

(Refrain)
For Blazer fans who go lusting,
A new point guard is that sexy girl.
Trade Machine's their pornography,
For one they'll give away the world.

(Repeat)

I thought of parodying the entire individual confession and absolution, but it seemed wrong even to me.

Easy

Go to www.firefox.com download it. When you type out your stuff and the word has a red underline, put your cursor over it and right click and it gives you the correct spelling. I use it for typos and I’m a pretty poor speller.

Never being wrong is not necessarily the sign of an elitist.

It’s the demand that no one else be wrong either that gets to be the problem. For example, I am a grammar elitist – I demand that everyone know what a verb and a noun are before I acknowledge their existence. (insert appropriate emoticon here)

He looks like he could use a cold shower.

I think Dave opened the floodgates by suggesting a trade involving Aldridge. Many suggestions involving him have risen to the surface since then.

I am not trying to squelch any further discussion but I happen to be of the opinion that we should not move Aldridge. Seeing him, Roy and Oden grow up together will be a journey well worth taking.

Wow.

I’d never thought that elitism would raise it’s ugly head in the best site on the web.

I look through most posts, some are great and some are not my cup of tea, but I’d never think of slamming someone about posts that could be heading the train of thought in a direction. (Maybe a rib a syntax error.) It seems that most that have chimed in here agree that posts should only be something that goes in one direction. The direction that the majority - or minority - deem OK. I read poems, songs and tangents that have nothing to do with basketball. All are fine with me. If they don’t interest me, I just stop reading a fanpost.

While the poem is witty and must have taken a long time to write, the gist is plain to see. STOP posting those dumb trade ideas, because…because… I said so.

Dave has said that ALL are welcome. He even posted not long ago about being nice to new posters and to each other. I welcome all thoughts. I reject the premise of some, imbrace others, but I try to disagree while holding that idea up as valid. I’d hope that most do that too.

I realize that I’m probably going to have to change my name in here. This post will, I’m sure, ruffle some feathers. But know that I love this site and most people in here.

If you think that I’m posting with no basis for my thought, just look at this from just a month ago. The subject was getting Battier.

“just PTB hysteria breaking loose again
why everybody thinks a deal needs to be consumated continues to baffle me. Isnt KP just going to ride our current roster? Battier? Please. The PTB is loaded with talent- Outlaw, Web, Sergio, guys just waiting to bust loose. There’s no emergency in P-Town and no need to make a trade for trades sake, especially when said trade may or may not have any difference on the teams success.

Hysteria? Please…
Read my post again, please. Especially the words following the P.S.

History has shown that Pritchard is aggressive. Will he stand pat? Maybe, but I think something is going to happen. What that is I don’t know, but hysteria has nothing to do with it.

I enjoy the "possibilities".

That is how I look at life. That is how I look at my backyard, my kids, my job. That is just me.

I enjoy this Blazer team and each member of it. I’d hate to see Outlaw go. My son has a Webster jersey. But that doesn’t stop me from dreaming about this and that.

by parkinglotj on Jun 8, 2008 6:14 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Trade Ideas are fun to throw around...

but it does get a bit ridiculous sometimes. I think that is all the poem is about. Real life isn’t always going to work out like an NBA Live Dynasty team, or as T Darkstar has pointed out, like pornography. In real life, players have to buy into the team. It is a fine line to build a team on character and culture and then trade all the guys who have bought into that vision for 2-3 years hoping that some new combination of talent will cure all the ills. It tends to remind players that this is all a business and they should get their’s while they can and screw the team concept.

I don’t think anyone wants the posting to stop. We all keep coming here. Check out some of the other sites on SB Nation and you will see that this much activity at this time in a NBA season is not typical. It seemed like it was all in good fun.

If it helps any, I think Battier would be a good addition to the team and BlazersOrBust must have been smoking something when he disagreed with you.
(THAT WAS A JOKE TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD.)

I havn't read all the responces

yet, so I hope i am not just parroting others. I have read and enjoyed your posts, and as long as you don’t stop contributing I will be happy. Some one posted a trade idea and I was the first respondent, mine was simply no. I went back after about 24 new coments to find mine was common. I nor any one else( i think) asked him to never post again, or ridiculed him, just simply disagreed without passion, couse for me anyways it just wasn’t close. But with out thinking out of the box, with out coming up with senarios(still haven’t got that dictionary) we cant really test our thinking.

I showed up hear thinking I new a little about basketball, now I know that I dont really know that much at all. Having to reserch players carears, teams, draft positions, ect to be relavent in an inilectual and cival conversation(couse thats mostly all we have) has been an education for me. I know more about ben gordon and hindrich then ever before. i also no more about me team then ever before, and I watched alot of gemas, quite a few at the rose. the steady influx of veried ideas and opionions tempers my perception. I have seen the group consenses evolve, becouse of this constant proding, into wanting to keep even jack. The point is I learn from differences, and I think we all do. I think the major majority agree with you in that perfect agreement breeds boardom. any way, you get the idea. dont go and change your name, be who you are, cnosequences be da$#ed. that is the essence of the charictor that you are asking be displayed hear.

Wait a sec

you DID realize after the fact that I was poking fun at all the people telling you how crazy you were and how you needed to calm down, and not at YOU, right? Sorry if I didn’t make that clear with my “sarcasm font” comment. I thought it was ridiculous that people were piling on you for making a trade suggestion and so I was trying to spoof them (with obviously limited success). I’m all about people coming up with off the wall trades. Anybody who would have suggested a “Z-bo for Frye and Francis, with a Francis buyout” trade before the draft last year would have gotten laughed out of the room. Anyway, if you already knew all that, then sorry for making you reread it. :) But it seemed to me then and now that you still thought I was attacking you, so I wanted to clarify that my intention was precisely the opposite.

It’s been rough in here at times. I been asked to ban myself at another time. It kind of stinks.

Look,

I’m not against a trade. It’s just that so many people have offered up trades that really sell the farm, at least in my opinion. And there’s a new flavor each day. Many of them don’t even bother to think if the player would be a good fit for what is going on here. I’m just trying to point that out in a light-hearted way, and maybe get more people thinking about the possibility of standing pat and being okay with it.

You seem to have taken this awfully hard, and it looks like there are good reasons why. I didn’t realize that you would. I apologize. I’m not out to hurt anyone’s feelings, just to make my own known.

As far as ruffling feathers, I’m pretty laid back (unless you have bad grammar) and am glad you posted what you really felt. Please do so more often, it makes discussions so much more interesting.

Thanks for the comments

I have no problems with trades that are impossible. I ponder them, then throw them away. The fun for ME is the possiblities.

I posted a little while ago about getting Redd. I was thinking, wow, this guy’s an Olympian and a huge scorer. This might be a great fit. Someone posted and had a valid link that he is a bad teammate. End of story and I said so at the time.

But the Redd story lead me to a couple of other ideas.

I may change from day to day about the players that I could see Portland going after, but I try VERY hard to understand the needs of the other team (and the type of players they want.) Good culture cuts both ways and makes Portland’s players attractive too.

The reality is that there are not enough minutes to go around. I am confident that the Oden and Rudy additions will not be the only changes. I just like to try to figure it out. By the way, I also understand that I am only right maybe 1 out of 100 times in real life. (I got the Webster pick right and Roy was my pick (albeit a move down to get him—no idea about the Aldridge pick.) Oh yeah, Oden was my pick, but that was at most a coin flip. I can’t think of another time I was right. But it doesn’t sway me. I LOVE to try an figure it out. LOVE it!

My admiration for the current players is strong, but I feel that there are other player out there that can help the team. Players that I will like just as much. Some one said in here “The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.” But have you stopped to think that maybe it could be?

by parkinglotj on Jun 8, 2008 8:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes

I have thrown out Richard Jefferson, Keyon Dooling, Battier, and I am not really anti-making a move. I did all the contract stuff for Redd also and we may have participated in the same post because I remember a similar experience with him.

It just seems to me that we have a lot of bargaining power right now. We can wait for not just a good deal but the best deal. I am sure we all disagree on what the “best deal” would be but some of the ideas that get put out there make it seem like we are desperate to get a PG or a SF at any cost and that our bench players do not hold much value. The progress made by Jack, Outlaw, and Webster over the past two years and the team as a whole, improving by 20 wins over two years with a fairly constant group of young players, gives me pause when I think of them being traded.

I think it would be wiser to throw all these guys into training camp and the preseason, maybe about 15-20 games and then start thinking about who is not fitting in. By then, it will be much clearer what they have in Rudy and whether Frye, Outlaw, Jack, Webster or Sergio is the odd man, or men, out of the rotation. Teams will discover they have no shot at the playoffs and maybe want to unload a contract for an expiring contract and some promising youth and you have a deal.

That was very well said

I understand that train of thought, to be patient; to wait for that killer deal. It makes sense.

But so does the argument that if there are not enough minutes to go around, players value will go down. Just look a Surgio as an example. Shoot, two years ago, Canzano and others were making the case that HE was the player to build this team around. Now what can you get for him?
I have also argued that Surgio is going nowhere. Rudy has insured that, and I think that his confidence will come back.

I was very disappointed with Kryapa being traded to get a skinning kid that would have been there anyways. Now I know two things. Aldridge was worth it and maybe he wouldn’t have been there for us. No need to risk it.

KP has a great balancing act to work out. Do you sell high or might that high actually be low?
He has resources that I can only dream about. I’m confident that the team will do the right thing.

Interesting

I almost brought up the losing of value while languishing on the bench idea and I thought I would wait to see if you would bring it up. It is also interesting that you used Sergio as your example because I would say he is the only one of our tradeable guys I see as being hurt by lack of playing time. While Sergio hasn’t gotten the minutes to show what he can do, GMs have seen Frye, Jack, Webster, and Outlaw for at least three years now and know what they are capable of and that they have a couple more (or a few more) years before they reach their prime. If they get lost in a rotation that has just added Rudy and Oden (assuming they accomplish enough in training camp etc. to oust these guys) there stock isn’t going to plummet.

The Blazers also don’t have to worry too much if they can’t get what they want in trades because Portland is starting to look attractive to free agents in search of a championship. Letting guys walk and signing free agents/brining over the talent stashed in Europe is a good bet too. Remember, if these guys are falling out of the Blazers rotation it is because the others are stepping up and playing at a high level and forcing Nate/KPs hand. That means you won’t want to bring in too much talent or you are just replacing guys who deserve minutes but can’t get them with guys who deserve minutes but can’t get them.

I really think the only way to blow it for KP is to tinker too much at this point and risk losing what has been special about this team for the past two years. Again, this is all opinion and if KP makes some huge moves this off-season and we have a radically different group of role players…I guess we will see what happens soon.

My only concern

The large cap holds on players in 2009: Frye (9.4mil.), Webster (11.3 mil.) and Jack (6.0 mil.)

Any way that you slice it, it they remain on the team it will cut into the cap space needed for the FA’s that you desire. One might argue that it won’t hurt us if we’re after just one FA. But if at that point we need two, well that could be a problem.

We could just not use the cap space.

At least not first thing in the summer. If we do resign the guys later, we will still have some cap space heading into the trade deadline, where that room with become even more valuable. Someone’s going to want to blow things up, it happens every year. And we suddenly become the choicest of trading partners.

And even then, if we don’t use it, we’ll be closer to the salary cap than we would have been, making it easier to be flexible in the future as well.

Thanks T Darkstar

Anything else I could say, beyond that trade ideas are a huge part of blogs and it is just something we have to cope with, would end up sounds snarky.

Great job T Darkstar! I love you guys.

PS

I love you you wrote a funny poem and people got a little bit upset. If I had a quarter for each time I did the same thing; I would have about five bucks. Remember when I said we needed OJ Simpson as a coach to teach the “killer instinct?” Ahh, sweet memories.
