What do I expect from RudyF

7.6points 2.3 boards 2 assists 1.5 TO

A top 10 player in the world (when healthy) had those rookie stats.  I don't even have to say his name, it's pretty obvious who I'm talking about unless you disagree with the top 10 claim, but tell me 9 other players that are more clutch than him, that play better than him, when it counts.  If Rudy's turns out to be a player like him, we'll all be more than ecstatic...KP got his culture from the Spurs...We're a young, hippper, and more athletic version of them without the foreign PG and foreign wing...until today.

Ladies and gentlemen, to my dedicated blazer folk,

give him some time.

It takes time for a team to happen.  unless they're this years celtics.  We have a serious shot to make some moves this offseason but if we don't do a thing...even if we trade #13 for a pick next year, we're still going to be better.

What do i expect from Oden?

Dwight Howards Stats

From Roy

pretty much the same as last year, with less minutes.

Martell, I'm unsure as we all are but he'll get more open shots.  Travis the same....Joel will be great if he's healthy, and channing can be a solid PF paired with the vanilla gorilla. Jack and Blake who knows who stays but i pretty much expect the same game from whoever does. James Jones is wildcard but gets  minutes if he stays.

And finally to Sergio, my second favorite player in the world behind Ime.    Both he and  RudyF playing together in the NBA, sharing the same backcourt may be the funnest basketball for us to watch...whether you love him or despise, it's hard to deny he can pass the ball, that he can see the court, that he gets his teammates the ball when they're hot, and that he changes the tempo of the game when he gets a chance...Didn't Popovich and Tparker have some struggles early on...Pop gave him minutes and let him play, something that Nate hasn't done with Sergio.  Will He? who knows but he might have to if Sergio gets better, and if he toughs it out...I'm not as concerned that he took a step back this past season because now we can see how he  responds.  Adversity isn't so bad.  That's what we learned this past season because we got better,,,with Oden watching.  With Rudy watching.  With you watching.

In the film Major League, they didn't win it all the first season, they didn't in the sequel either,,,they took steps.  I know eventually it went ack to the minor leagues, but nobody  saw that movie so does it really count?  The Godfather part III doesn't count, so neither does Major League 3 "back to the minors"

Go Boston.

I agree

your last fanpost was famous, big hit. I like this one 2. I think sregio is going to, by defalt be better, wtih a homie on the floor. His spirits will pick up, he will have a real conection to someone on the team and that will contribute to his overall sence of responsibility to the team. it is almost scary, I feal like with all the good things going on right now that …... I dont have anything in my history to compare it too. GO BLAZERS!!!!.

ps the next fanpost to get kicked off is only like 4 days old. maybee we should slow down a little. I don’t really know, just saying.

I just watched a ton of Rudy

He looks like a better, bigger version of Sergio…....they have the same body control, they both throw the same kind of no look, cross court passes that if anyone else throws, it gets stolen.

He’s going to be crazy good. I’m so excited for next season to start. If only this season would hurry up and end.

RUDY

Yes rudy is from the same country and they have some similar qualities, but he has more in common with the player compared to in the original post, rudy is going to turn the ball over, and he is going to dunk it and make threes so it will be worth it.
However, Dwight Howard numbers for oden is a little bit much to ask, he will still be good ive watched alot of greg oden videos on youtube and he will be a special player… unless he get injured to much…

agreed

Dwight’s rookie stats is what we can and should expect
Howards rookie line: 12 points 10 reb and 1.7 blocks but mostly alot of dunks and that what we can count one from oden, lots of dunks

by ifarr on Jun 6, 2008 7:34 PM PDT reply actions

that's a good baseline

I think we might see Greg do even a bit better than that. Recall that Greg will be 2 years older that Dwight was as a Rook, having played a year at THE Ohio State University and spent a year getting bigger.

Expecting Rudy to have similar stats to Manu Ginobili's rookie stats is pretty pessimistic

Rudy’s stats in the ACB this year are much more impressive than anything Manu did while he was in Europe. That doesn’t necessarily mean we can expect Rudy to have a better career than Ginobili (Manu was a late-bloomer who steadily improved throughout his late 20’s and into his 30’s), but it does seem reasonable to expect that he will have more immediate impact.

by trk on Jun 6, 2008 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

I think expecting Manu's rookie numbers

... is on the lower end of what Rudy might do, but it’s important to not get TOO disappointed if his impact isn’t felt right away. Manu is a great example of a similar player both in size and style, and we all know how great he is now… but he didn’t start off like gangbusters.

So, we shouldn’t get too down if Rudy doesn’t look like his YouTube videos right away, and reminding everyone about how Manu started helps temper expectations to a more reasonable level.

I think Rudy will have more highlight style baskets n’ dunks, because he seems to be flashier than Manu. He’ll also be given a chance to shoot more than Manu, I believe. But he will still be a really skinny Euro adjusting to the most athletic position in the NBA, and we gotta expect some kind of transition period and not have it make us worry about if Rudy is ‘for real’ or not.

Ya gotta admit, the year long wait and hoopla over his play in Europe is making expectations pretty high, and I’d hate for people to be disappointed in Rudy when it isn’t his fault. Even if he’s all we hope he is and becomes like Manu and can start with Roy in the backcourt, he’s still not likely to do AMAZING his first few weeks/months in the NBA.

AMAZING isn't even on my radar

Personally, I’m totally pumped that Rudy’s making the continental shift, but..
1. Skinny Euro dude =/ ready for primetime. Sergio, Manu and all Euroleaguers have had an acclimation period and I’m, honestly, not expecting any more out of his first year than just that. The phrase “immediate impact” has me concerned from jump street. His SECOND year however..
2. It’s really up to the style Nate runs, the amount of minutes he gets, and PG/SG compatibility on the A-squad, in my opinion. For me, I’m expecting a stellar backup SG and that’s it (this year) – if we get more, great, but I’m tempering my expectations thusly. Makes sense?

p.s. ’=/’ is my impromptu sign for “doesn’t equal” – I’m not too hip on comment lingo, so hopefully that’s somewhat in line with the colloquialism.

I think me and you are at the same place

And I know a lot of others around here agree with us, as the expectations for Rudy are PROBABLY higher than what he’ll be able to do as a skinny rookie. I’m optimistic about how he’ll fit in, and I think he’ll be great for us in the near future, but I simply worry about some expecting him to be the “Kobe of Europe” too soon.

Trk prolly agrees with us somewhat as well. I’d just hate for the average fan to be disappointed in Rudy and wonder what the big deal is, when we shouldn’t even be expecting him to be what he’ll hopefully eventually be right out of the gate.

What I’m expecting, is a guy who makes really cool plays one game and looks overwhelmed the next. 20+ scoring one night, struggles to find his shot next. Basically, a promising rookie season that shows a glimmer of what we hope to see nightly in the future, but still needs time to refine against NBA competition.

I think we just want everyone to remember he IS a rookie, and the Euro to NBA jump is rarely a friendly one. Even if he outright sucks like Sergio has at times, it shouldn’t mean that much. We just gotta give the kid time, so I try to remind people of that when expectations for Rudy are expressed.

Know what I mean, yo?

Well said

I totally agree with you. I posted a couple of diaries a few months back about Rudy basically saying what Midget and you have—that he’s not gonna be an immediate NBA sensation/ROY/6th man candidate. The size, strength, speed, and smarts of NBA defenders are better than anything that Rudy’s faced before. He’s a very heady and very skilled player, so he’ll adapt, but my expectations for the first two-thirds of the season for Rudy are lower than those of just about anybody around here.

I got tired of looking for information on it

but doesn’t a european basketball court have different dimensions than NBA courts.? I think the basket is actually about a foot lower. That alone is going to be a huge adjustment for Rudy.

Not sure..

But I do have ONE relevant piece to add to this puzzle: I’ve heard int’l courts are going to switch to the rectangular paint zone next year (as opposed to the crazy trapezoid they have now). Which, to me, is kind of a bummer. I liked the crazy trapezoid.

All hoops are 10 feet

I don’t think the court is shorter, but I know for sure all hoops are at 10 foot, for woman, for men, all over the world. Adjusting a full FOOT would be crazy, and would make all of those dunks by Rudy mean nothing—let alone how long it would take to learn how to shoot on a NBA hoop. No Euro would be drafted.

Plus, the Olympics does international rules (like Euro ball plays), and you’ve seen that those hoops are 10 feet. I think the main difference with the court is the trapezoid, but like 12sharks said they are changing their rules and stuff to more match the NBA.

Just to let ya worry less… what you’ve seen Rudy do is on a real 10 foot hoop.

For reals

Only person I’ve heard who could dunk on 12’ hoops was Wilt Chamberlain. He was also the only one who could snag change from the top of the backboard (thus the ‘take a quarter, leave two dimes and a nickel’ anecdote). If Dwight Howard can do it, more power to him, yeah?!

The Finals = Sunny Days

Oh, I don’t think so, compadre. It was just two days ago that I was biking to work and thinking about how I couldn’t wait for summer, you know, when June/July gets into full swing. It dawned on me a half second later that it was, indeed, already June. Super mega total bummer.

That's a big reason why I'll be glad to live in the 4 corners area for awhile. Or maybe longer.

I love Oregon but get tired of the weather.

Love the weather

I hope it rains all the way till the middle of July. A month and a half of summer is all I need. The warm rain is delicious.

Someday I’ll move to the west slope of the Olympic Range in Washington where it rains 100 inches per year. I’ll still root for the Blazers.

Here's my dream.

I want to vacation in Oregon every spring and/or fall. I want to live in the 4 corners area in winter and summer. Check out how much there is to see and do in a relatively small area. Amazing. It’s a dream.

He shoul be better than Jordan by Thanksgiving

I expect a triple double by mid-November and then a quadruple double by Christmas. Rudy is obviously better than Kobe, who is leaps and bounds better than Jordan. I think if Oden goes down, Rudy will fill in as the starting center.
