Where would Greg & Rudy be in this year's draft?

I sent a note to Jonathon Givony of DraftExpress.com asking him where Greg Oden and Rudy Fernandez would be drafted if they were in the draft this year. His response:

  • "Oden #1, Rudy probably top-15."

We could potentially have the best rookie class next year without ever using our first round pick.

Has anyone else seen any handicapping of where Rudy or Greg would be in this year's draft by other draft analysts?

KP has said

that Rudy would be a top-five pick in this year’s draft. IMO Greg would still go #1 overall, knee injury and all.

by BlazersOrBust on Jun 5, 2008 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

Really?

Would Oden with his suspect knee and other health problems reall be ranked above Rose and Beasley and Mayo. I thik his bad knee would make some GMs think twice about making him # 1.

by Love on Jun 6, 2008 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Just my opinion, obviously

but yes, I think that Oden would still be ranked above Rose, Beasley, and Mayo. To borrow a point from Dave, we heard about Rose and Beasley this year; we’ve heard about Oden since he was a junior in high school. That’s a big difference. Oden is a once-in-a-decade big man prospect; Rose, Beasley, and Mayo are not. In the unlikely event that any of the guards approach Chris Paul’s stratosphere…well, Chris Paul is awesome, but Tim Duncan’s team still bounced him from the playoffs. It’s still a big man’s game.

by BlazersOrBust on Jun 6, 2008 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus

It was an old Tim Duncan, against a playing-better-than-any-6-footer-ever Chris Paul. Chris Paul will always be more than a handfull, but big men are always the trump card. GOOD big men, of course.

Oden would go #1 after the team with the first pick examined his recovery and saw he’s gonna be just fine. He’s considered a mega uber super duper talent for a reason, after all. I think some of us have a hard time believing just how good he’s supposed to be, because we’ve never had a center like that since Walton… and that didn’t end well.

Greg Oden is Greg Oden. He always goes first.

No way Rudy would go outside of Top 10

Draft Express has Gallinari going 6th, and Rudy is a far better prospect according to just about everyone. Gallinari is younger, but not nearly as talented.

by Lance Uppercut on Jun 5, 2008 5:06 PM PDT reply actions

I agree 100%

Saying Rudy is top-15 is way too broad. Rudy is a better prospect than the Italian kid, DeAndre Jordan, Eric Gordon, Augustin, Westbrook, Alexander, etc. I prefer the Draft Express dude’s previous statement on the Oregonlive chat, where he says adding Rudy along with Oden isn’t even fair and the Blazers have the BEST front office team for the draft in the NBA.

I mean, totally dude. If the greaseball from Italy is a top 10 pick, Rudy goes right before him to be a top 9 pick, easy.

DON’T THEY KNOW RUDY > MJ???

There was a poll over at blog a bull

They put Oden, Durant, Rose, and Beasley in a poll and asked who the Bulls would take if those four were in the draft this year.

Oden had like 60 percent of the votes, followed by Durant, Rose, and then Beasley.

Actually,

the poll has changed since I last saw it. Oden is up to 62%, and Rose is now in second, followed by Durant and then measley Beasley with 4%.

Why?

Intellectually, it doesn’t make sense that you would be buoyed by the opinion another fanbase had about a player your team has that hasn’t played a SINGLE game in the nba. I also had a uplifting moment when seeing the numbers for the poll, but I don’t understand why, when logically no amount of prognostication is going to change the upcoming reality. Regardless of whether Oden is seen as the best prospect ever or as another sam bowie, it doesn’t change the fact that he has not played a game yet…knowing the team’s history, I hate myself for getting my hopes up about the future of the franchise…

Anyway, I’m sorry for writing such a depressing comment, just had to put it out there.

I didn’t expect Oden to win the poll, because a #1 pick offers so much hope to a franchise and knowing that it isn’t the best year in the NBA to get the #1 pick would kinda burn and I figured they’d overcompensate by voting for Rose. I like them being honest.

Since all reports say Oden is gonna be just fine, he is buff and rough and tough, and he is Greg Oden, he easily goes #1.

For Rudy

I’d think he would go where Gordon is supposed to go. Since they are both scoring guards, but Rudy has better hight and passing ability. They both have questions about them but Rudy is more of the standard SG verse Gordon.

Is anyone else worried...

Is anyone else worried that Rudy shoots a set shot? It’s the first thing that my girlfriend noticed when she saw highlights of him. She said, “he shoots like a girl.” I said, “I know.” When he’s facing guys his height and quickness, won’t his low release hurt him? Hmm, who is the last highly regarded NBA wing prospect that was skinny and had a slow release? O, crap, Adam Morrison! Rudy looks and plays a little like Adam Morrison. He does. I think he’s a setp quicker, but still… anytime a comparison to Adam Morrison is reasonable, you have to be scared. I hope I am wrong.

by PoliSam on Jun 5, 2008 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions

legit concen

I share it. However, Rudy seems a lot more explosive and quick than Ammo. Plus, I still think Ammo can become a good scorer in the NBA (he’ll still be a woeful defender though). Ammo’s injury came at a terrible time for him—he really needed a good Soph campaign to show improvement from his rookie year.

Back to Rudy. Like many prospects, he has question marks. He’s a long way from “can’t miss.” However, his upside is nice, and our wagon isn’t hitched to him. Our bright future could withstand Rudy being a bust, as long as Greg pans out.

Agree

Rudy is definitely more athletic than Morrison. It will help that he’s not expected to be a savior of the franchise. I think he can be a really important piece of the Blazers, but I doubt he’ll be the second coming of Ginobili. A more reasonable comparison might be Richard Hamilton. Not bad.

by PoliSam on Jun 6, 2008 6:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Every year Rudy has had a good, even great, improvement since his 17.

This season he improved his efficieny by 30%. Players use to mature at 26, and Rudy is 23. And he likes challenges.

A set shot is a good thing

I love that he shoots a set shot. As your legs get more and more tired towards the end of the game, you have to adjust a jump shot. A set shot is more consistent and will be more accurate in the 4th quarter. Ginobili shoots a set shot and he is always hitting late game threes.

I suggest tea over coffee.

Not only does it tend to contain a higher amount of caffeine, it’s usually less acidic.

I’d stay away from the energy drinks as well. They rely on sugar and caffeine. The boost you get is temporary and it then causes the system to crash.

I agree with this

If for no other reason that Draft Express has Gallinari at #8. I would think that if Rudy were in this year’s crop, he’d be ahead of Gallinari.

by Storyteller on Jun 6, 2008 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Extending the idea -

where do you think LaMarcus and Roy would go? You can base their position on how they’ve performed in the NBA. (Pretend you had a glimpse into the future.)

I’d say Roy at 4, maybe 3 and Aldridge at 4 or 5.

Oden
Rose
Roy
Aldridge
Beasley

after that, Rudy is in the next 3 with Bayless and Mayo.

If you include the top 6 or 7 guys from the last two drafts, the following guys probably stay in the top ten – Durant, Horford, Conley maybe Jeff Green. That means that out of three conscutive drafts Portland ends up with 3 top ten picks, plus two that are top 15. (Although technically, this year’s 13th pick get’s devalued with the addition of the guys from past drafts.)

We are looking at having possibly 5 of the 15 best palyers to come out of the draft in a 3 year period. No wonder I keep getting attacks of giddiness.

no way in heck

Aldridge goes before Beas. Just flat out wouldn’t happen. Beas may have had the best statistical frosh season ever. Doesn’t mean he’ll end up being better than LMA. Does mean he’d go higher in the draft.

1) Oden
2) Rose
3) Roy
4) Beasley
5) Durant (still has massive upside)
6) Aldridge
7) Horford

If we’re just taking this year’s draft and adding Oden and Rudy, I’d say Greg goes #1 and Rudy goes somewhere between 6 and 10.

You can’t put a tweener over Aldridge, thats just not right, outside of have like a 5 inch standing reach advantage LMA is ten times the citizen and worker.

LMA ten times the worker?

Sorry, no.

Beas is a tireless worker. You don’t pile up those rebounding totals (which dwarf LMA’s) without being a hard worker.

People don’t seem to realize how much better Beasley was than LMA, playing in the same conference. As I say, I’d keep LMA since its unclear how much Beas’ size will hurt him in the league, but Beas’ monstrous freshman year (again, quite possibly the best freshman year of all time) would make him a higher pick.

I think rose is going over beastly, for good reason. I think that peaples fears about beastlys height might put aldridge over him, might not but still might. if they were coming out at the same time, i would think there would be speculation based on how they played each other. who ever dominated that game would go first. even if beastlys stats were better, if LMA ran him, lamonster would be first i think.

I dunno

I get your point, because Beasley’s freshman year was better than Durant’s. And even so, he is maybe gonna fall behind OJ Mayo because everyone is scared off by his “quirkiness”. Even so, out of college I’m sure Beasley goes before LMA.

BUT… the exercise’s rules allowed to take into account LMA and Roy’s NBA play. With his NBA play, LMA has showed he is good and will get a lot better, and combined with his great attitude and work ethic I could see him going in front of Beasley if a team is scared of Beasley’s Beasleyness.

If people weren’t worried by Beasley being so immature and annoying, his stats say he is the no-brainer #1. The fact that he isn’t doesn’t cast him in a favorable light.
