Chauncey available?
Joe Dumars says a new Pistons coach may only be the beginning of change in Detroit. Could point guard Chauncey Billups be had for the right player/draft position package? True, he will be 32 come the '08-09 season, and his style is half-court playmaking rather than running, but wouldn't he be a great set-up guy for Oden, Aldridge, and Roy, not to mention his own scoring and defensive abilities? Especially over the next 3 years or so as the Blazers transform their youth into playoff veterans, and continue to look for/develop their longer-term PG of the future.

I would not pull the trigger
He is a very good player but we don’t need someone like him. He would definitly help out our PG situation but for the long haul, he doesn’t fit because of his age. I believe he is on the downhill swing of his NBA career so we should be looking for someone less entitled to playing time or buckets. Basically a role player at the PG position. I’ve always said that we should look for a PG that can shoot from mid range (because we run the Pick and Roll) and defend. That’s it. We don’t need someone to come in and be the ‘Man’. And I would be affarid that Chauncey would be that individual.
Rodney Stuckey would be a better fit. He is young and has a lot of upside but I doubt that Dumars will give him up.
My solution is to stick with what we have regarding our PG situation. Reason is there’s no one out there now that is a significant upgrade to what we have in JJ and Blake (other then C-Paul and D-Williams). No one that I would give up a Marty, Outlaw or Fry for. Those guys are very good roll players and that is the issue that most people are forgetting. To have a championship team, you MUST have very good roll players and the roster that the Blazers have currently have a good mix of starters and roll players.

Stick with what we have at point vs. Chauncey Billups
Ummmm that’s an easy one. Chauncey would be a huge upgrade for us for the next 3-4 years.
Outlaw, Pryz, Frye, Webster, Jack, Blake, Lafrentz, McBob, Rudy, Sergio, Kopponen, Freeland, #13, Future firsts, all our seconds….. You can have your pick of it all Detroit. Getting Billups for any combination of the above would rival the Gasol ripoff. Billups is an all-star and NBA Finals MVP. With him we are a near lock for the WCF next year! If he isn’t worth blowing our salary cap for I simply don’t know who is.

Would they even
consider a straight up REC for Billups? This is assuming that they let Rasheed go, and would look to a big free agent signing… I am honestly just asking, it would atleast be kind of interesting

and then also include
a blake for lindsay hunter trade package? If they do this and keep wallace untill his contract expires that gives them 25 million coming off their cap. With their Legacy and the other players on the team that they would be keeping, prince and hamilton, couldn’t they sign pretty much anyone they would want out of the next years free agency?

Possibly... but who would want to go
to detroit?

I would very much go for him on the Blazers
I love Chauncey Billups, and 32 isn’t exactly young, but particularly if we have an understudy (either Jack, or whoever we draft), he would be great for us. We’re basically already a halfcourt team though and Billups would cement that.

If we can get him on the cheap, I think he'd be great for grooming our PG of the future
With that said, I doubt we will. The Pistons know he’s good for another 4 years.

He'd be a great addition
I’d love to have him teaching our PG of the future, whomever that may be.

I'd like him.
My concern is: Would he check out if the Pistons traded him? He just exudes Detroit basketball to me, I wonder if he would carry that same aura, and bring the same game/level of intensity if he were playing in a different city …
If we’re certain he would, then yeah he’d be a huge upgrade. I’d try to limit what we give up for him, though. He is pretty old …

He's not bad
I don’t think he’s one of the guys Detroit needs to move.

Hellz yeah!
Give me a double helping of hellz yeah!
I thought he was going to be one of the untouchables, but after that presser, I bet many dollars KP is is coming up with at least a dozen trade scenarios for Prince and/or Billups, are you kidding? Those guys would be perfect on our team. This is a case of using EBC, everything but the core Roy/Oden/LMA.

Billups is perfect
If we could pick him up without moving anything he would be the best pg we could get at this time. He’s excellent as a pg, but he has additional value in that he could even show Jack what it means to play the “bulk pg” position. man Chauncey would be perfect

Fills the need
both for veteran leadership and a starting Point. Also with Stuckey sliding in, I think very doable for Detroit. KP could find a way to make this trade in his sleep with the players we have available. This trade would shave a good year off our timeline.

He's old, we're young
Never shall the twain meet. We don’t need him.

Chauncey or Prince
Prince is cheaper, younger, and with what we would have to give up to get either one plays a much more needed position considering there is no way detroit would consider it without taking Outlaw or Martell with that said I also don’t think Detroit is ready to part with Billups untill Stukey has at least one more year to develop.
Go for Prince we can probally get him for cheap and he wont overshadow our existing stars besides Roy is probally going to play the point anyway
by jlarose78 on Jun 4, 2008 12:03 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You think?
I think Prince will be more expensive than Chauncey.
I also don’t see a problem with Chauncey’s age. He’d be an immediate (and huge) upgrade and would give us a solid 3-5 years to figure out the future. More importantly, he’d be able to help teach everyone on our team how to win.

gotta start somewhere
if we have the mindset that we can only consider trading for someone who is going to lead us to the first of 12 straight championships and he must be under 25 that limits the number of players to CPaul, DWilliams, and a few others that we also aren’t going to be able to get.
We first have to get into the playoffs to get the experience. I think we are going to need a veteran or two to get there, who is likely not going to be around for championship #10. In fact, can you think of a single championship team that doesn’t have a player with less than 5 years left in their career?
I’m sure if Billups were available without giving up any of our core, KP would jump at it. I am doubtful that Billups will be available.

Chauncey looked real slow out there
He’s definitely taken a step back this year after his new contract. He’s old and has a long term contract which means he’s coasting the rest of way. We don’t need him.

Really?
He had a pulled Hamstring in the playoffs? other then that I thought he looked great this year, the times I was able to watch him play. Took a step back in terms of minutes because of Stuckey, but his numbers were bang on inspite of losing the minutes. We could’nt do any better in my opinion based on our needs, he’s the perfect fit.

That's 4 years 8 mil on the books.
That is a lot to spend on an old man at the point. We already had to force one player off the team for his knees do we want to go through that again with Chauncey?

I guess,
the question is, is he worth more to the Blazers then what we would have to give up.
If we are talking Blake/Outlaw/#13 – then yes, that being said I don’t think that would get it done.

Just to make the salaries work
It would take more than Blake and Outlaw, you’d have to throw in Frye as well.

I'd be great.
For this year, and maybe next. Then what? We’re burdened with an aging has been with a big contract right when we hit our prime. I’d be surprised to get him.

Perfect, yet another reason to get him,
We are going to need that $13m expiring contract 3 years from now when we are over the cap and out of the lottery. And we will be over the cap whether we get Billups or not.

He doesn't seem hungry to me. That whole team seemed like a bunch of fat
cat’s after a huge meal (minus Prince). The arrogance thing is a turn off to me as well. Maybe the THIRD straight game 6 exit from the ECF might help. I would not give up much to get him. Now Prince is another story. My mantastic mancrush on Prince is well documented.

I know folks talk a lot about the stones
being complacent or whatever. Me, I think these are all just smokescreens. The reality is that the pistons are a collection of good but not great players without a single superstar. The aberration is that they achieved amazing success given that they’re a starless team playing in a league where stars win. The year they won was the first time a team without a superstar won since either the Isiah Pistons or the 79 Sonics (depends on your opinion of the superstardom of Isiah and Joe).
I really don’t think it’s about complacency or lack of urgency or whatever. I just think it’s really damn hard to win without a Duncan or Shaq or Jordan or Hakeem or Bird or Magic.
