OPTING OUT THREAD:
I figured rather than have 10 fanposts on who is and is not opting out, this is the main opt out thread.
From ESPN Brand, Maggette and Baron Davis have opted out:
Brand and Maggette:

Davis:

post who else is opting out or resigning.

Just checking my understanding
or lack ther of. does anyone opting out this year help the blazers in any way this year? or is this just good information for assesing the strengths of apponents as they add and subtract these players?

i think we´d probably prefer that they hadn´t opted out
We´d like as many players available as possible at the summer we´ll have the capspace

Opt out is bad for us
Davis and Brand would’ve been free agents during our 2009 free agent shopping spree. Now, they’ll get locked up long term. Even if we didn’t have interest, they would’ve gobbled up a big chunk of the free agent money pool that summer, leaving fewer suitors for whomever we wanted.

B Davis
I can’t believe he opted out…....wow, he left nearly 18M on the table.
I wouldn’t mind him on our team if he’d accept the mid level. Haha…....

Hmph. Interesting.
My first (and only) fanpost last month was about Baron Davis probably opting out, and I mentioned New York only as a possible destination because the post was based on an article I read about him matching what D’Antoni might be looking for in a new PG and the Knicks contacting Davis, which I linked. The point of the fanpost was to contemplate how much of a threat the Warriors would be without him, with Davis going to New York as an example. Apparently that wasn’t clear as some of the ensuing comments took a slight turn for the discourteous. Because of that misunderstanding I deleted the fanpost after only a couple hours. I was new here, and I didn’t want to be responsible for a ruckus. In hindsight I wish I hadn’t deleted it, but it’s no big deal. I feel vindicated.

I must of missed that one
But I don’t think anyone, other than yourself, saw this coming. I can’t imagine anyone giving him anywhere near that kind of money, especially NY (who has nothing but the Mid level and are trying to get under the cap). And I don’t think NY has anything GS would be interested in (unless their intrigued by bloated contracts), making a sign and trade unlikely.

It was definitely a longshot and I wouldn't say I saw it coming or even expected it
but I was in San Francisco the whole season, and from what I gathered talking to my Warriors fan friends and the overall vibe I got when I was there he wasn’t expected to stay long-term. They didn’t think he would be gone this season, but I thought there was enough of a chance to mention it, especially after rumors started circulating. I really don’t think New York is going to get him, nor did I when I posted it. It was just the icebreaker for the conversation of a Baron-less Golden State. But it was mistakenly taken to be the whole point of the conversation.

And thanks, by the way, for sticking it out
I keep trying to remind people who tend towards the…hmmm…ascerbic that they need to be a little more careful for the sake of new folks and the site. Most people have gotten the picture. There are still a few who think that their opinion (launched like a catapult) is more valuable than creating another devoted reader and writer here. Glad you saw past that to the rest of us.

here's the list of free agents as of today
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=2008freeagents
A few players (unrestricted FA) are intriguing
Josh Smith
Josh Childress
PJ Brown
James Posey
Derek Anderson…just kidding
Eduardo Najera
Baron Davis
Shaun Livingston
Elton Brand
Corey Maggette
Ron Artest…just kidding again…sort of
Michael Finley
Brent Barry
Gilbert Arenas

3 of the top 4
are interesting. But can we sign free agents this year? I thought we were pretty much booked solid. A sign and trade pssibility is about the only thing I can imagine. What would it have to be, Memphis signing Childress, then trading him to us for Channing, Batum, and RLEC? Maybe we trade next year’s picks?

We can use the MLE
And I don’t think a lot of those guys are UFAs… Josh Smith and Childress are restricted, for sure. I think JasonT was saying they are unrestricted, which isn’t correct for at least those two. They are finishing their rookie deals.
If we wanted to sign a free agent, we could use our mid-level exception, which is like 6 million a year. Since we’re aiming for cap room, I doubt we use it unless we sign someone for one year. With how our roster as is, it doesn’t seem that likely…

Wow, Baron opted out
I can’t believe it. There’s no way someone is paying him 18 million next season, even if he had an injury-free 07-08.
If there isn’t a bidding war for him, and he’s willing to [Rock mode on] “know his role,” he could be a valuable member (and mentor) of the Blazers. Bayless could learn a lot.

Let's hope
Let’s hope he doesn’t wanna take the MLE to play for his hometown Lakers.
A motivated and focused Baron Davis is one of the best PGs in the league… he just isn’t playing up to his ability most of the time. Playing for the Lakers and always being on TV would likely bring the best out of Baron Von Richtofen Davis…

I think GSoM would blow up if that happened
There’s talk of Gilbert Arenas doing the same thing. It’s not going to happen though, I mean are you really going to turn down tens of millions of dollars, AND have your former fans hate you?
Also those guys are really really really high on Monta Ellis. Like absurdly. He’s a nice player and all, but I would take Brandon over him any day.

Yeah, they're Monta crazy
In that thread about the western conference’s strength the other week that was popular over there, there was a HUGE debate saying Monta was better and worth more than KEVIN DURANT. It was crazy.
It reminded me of someone, somewhere on some pre-Blazers Edge Blazers board, saying that he wouldn’t trade post-micro Z-Bo for pre-micro Amare (meaning, this happened during that gap where Zach had his micro and Amare hadn’t had his yet). INSANITY. No one even knew how bad Amare was at defense yet, and he was coming off his killing of the Spurs and Tim Duncan in the playoffs.
Monta is very overrated over there, even though he’s a fun player. He can score, sure, but he’s a pretty bad PG and is not a good shooter AND is a horrible defender. The best version of him is Allen Iverson, dynamic scorer, but Monta doesn’t have AI’s ballhandling and PG skills.
He’s still really young, and he’s exciting, but he doesn’t do a lot of stuff you want your main star player to do.
Maybe it’s me, but Kevin Durant >>>>> Monta Ellis and it isn’t up for debate. Durant didn’t have a TERRIFIC rookie season, but he was 19 and skinny as a stick and in a bad situation. Oden was the better/right choice and will likely have a better career if healthy, but Durant can also be a once-in-a-generation talent.
Monta is an undersized SG who is forced to be a PG because of his height. Not my favorite type of player, so I am biased. Guys who are great scorers and are good for highlight reels don’t win ya games if they don’t do the rest of the stuff ya need.
This is one reason I like Bayless, because he seems to have a Monta-esque offensive game, combined with PG skills and defense AND a great outside shot. Sign me up for that version!

Monta can’t hold Iverson’s jock….......he’s no where near the legend that is Iverson. I swear that guy’s gonna play the same way until he’s 45.

Baron isn't totally crazy here
Yeah, no one will pay him 18 million per year. BUT, with his history of injuries and old age fast approaching, this is his last deal of his career probably. He needs to get it signed before he gets hurt and no one wants to ink him to a long term deal.
I bet he’d sign with the Dubs again, unless they are dead set against a long term deal with him. I don’t got my finger on the pulse of that situation, so I dunno.
By opting out, he can sign a 5, 6 year deal for 10 million a year from SOMEONE, maybe, and that’s obviously better than making 18 million for one year and getting injured somehow and having to play for pennies on the dollar after that. He’s gotta get this last contract while he is healthy.
Warriors fans seem upset by this on GSOM, so perhaps I am missing something, but this doesn’t seem that crazy to me.

Which team
Which team would be dumb enough to sign him to a 5 year 60M deal? I mean Isaiah’s out of the league. Mchale? They don’t have the scratch.
Who’s got the cap room this year?

Philly
They will still have around 10 to 12 million after re-signing their own Iggy. Not as much as Davis might want, but they have the most to offer sans sign and trades.
That being said, I could well imagine him teaming up with Elton Brand for the Clippers, if the Clippers are willing to let Maggette go now that they drafted Gordon.

Clips
They just may be relevant again if they can resign Brand and land a motivated Davis. I wonder how Livingston is coming along…....I believe Maggette is a goner. I know he was a favorite of Sterling, but he’s been rumored to be on the block for seems like forever. He has to be tired of it…......he seems like a nice player who gets no coverage for whatever reason.

Davis just left a ton of money on the table.
Maybe he wants to win a championship? I could see him signing with Boston for the mid-level and Cassell is jettisoned.

And how about players at the end of their rookie contract . . .
. . . who were not tendered a qualifying offer by yesterday’s deadline, and thus
just became unrestricted free agents when a QO would’ve made them restricted free agents?
I say this only because that just happened to Sebastian Telfair.
Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

At least with him
Minny says they’re gonna sign him back, they just didn’t wanna play his lottery-level QO. According to ESPN anyways, and when I watched T-Wolf games they seemed high on Telfair.
Similar situation to Livingston down in LA, I guess, without the injuries.
