Who should start?
Let's say that no good trades come by at the guard position and we go into the season with the same guards. I think most people agree that, on opening night, Blake will be starting at PG over Bayless. It's not a good idea to have a rookie PG running the team and starting with zero experience. However, after a short period, it's legitimate to consider starting Bayless.
Blake: Fits in the first unit because he's experienced, brings stable play, and doesn't demand the ball on offense. Fits in the second unit because it lacks a true playmaker without him (since Roy is guaranteed to start).
Bayless: Fits in the first unit because he can complement Roy by playing off the ball, shoots well, and could use the experience of starting to develop. Fits in the second unit because he can continue to brush up his skills by facing easier competition and having room for error.
It's somewhat like a development vs. success argument. Bayless will likely make more mistakes, but is that worth the reward of bringing him along with our timeline? The other thing to consider is which player's skill set fits better with each unit. For the purpose of discussion, I'll say the all-star break is the time frame. I have no idea if that's too long or too short; I guess we'll find out via the results in the poll.
Update: Sorry about that messed up poll temporarily.. I was trying to change the poll to make it more in depth, but apparently it keeps the old results. Just found out you have to delete a poll and then remake it. I was going to give a range of choices of when Bayless should start including each half of the next three seasons (First half of 08-09 to Second half of 10-11), but since this one has already been up for a while and it's pretty close, might as well leave it. Feel free to leave your thoughts on when specifically he should take over anyway.

Bayless is 19
I think it will take more than half a season.

Most likely Blake.
It would be better for Bayless to come off the bench and play against 2nd unit players. He can learn to run the offense and have the freedom to shoot the ball. I don’t expect Nate to start a 19 year old rookie PG.

I would say a while
He will need to gain some muscle. He will need to inprove his D. No matter how good a defender one is at the college level, the need to improve is a necessity as gaurding a Chris Paul/DeronWilliams type is not easy. All this will take a while. I could see him starting during his sophomore season. Especially w/ Blakey (ugh i cant believe i wrote that and Its been forever since I heard Mike Rice say that…) and/or a yet-to-be-determined Vet PG.

I don't think Bayless will start yet either
However, it has nothing to do with his body (200lbs, 6’3”). He’s solid, actually I would say he is stronger than a lot of NBA point guards already.

This is the correct answer.
And it applies to coming out of training camp, not just starting at the All-Star Break.
Now, I have no doubt that Blake is likely to be the starter on opening day. But I see no reason not to give Bayless a chance to show what he can do and impress Nate enough to be our starter all season, if he can prove he can do it.
Given Nate’s disposition on point guards, a rookie is not likely to be able to earn this out of camp. And probably not by the break, either. But Bayless deserves a shot at proving himself, and I believe Nate will give him that chance.
Wherever you go, there you are.

this was my thought.
I saw the poll, quickly realize it fell into the 80% of polls on this site that are so poorly constructed that I can’t pick one of the options, thought about writing the comment “we’ll know in 30 games or so” (it would have been the first comment), then decided finally in the end just to pass on the thread altogether.

Blake should start
Though I don’t buy into the Bayless character issues I think it would be good for him to be humbled a bit by coming off the bench. He should still have around 10 minutes alongside Roy though. Bayless is not ready to be an NBA caliber PG right now, I believe he will be and if he grows very fast I still don’t see him starting before the all-star break. Blake is solid, he won’t put up all-star numbers but he rarely messes up, so we have all the time in the world to get Bayless ready. I’m all for being proved wrong by Bayless though.
by Bskey on Jun 30, 2008 1:47 PM PDT 0 recs
I'd like to see Bayless start
but only if Nate feels he’s ready, and we all know Nate won’t start someone if he doesn’t feel they’ve earned it…so I’m trusting Sarge on this one!

Most people are voting on what they would want to see
Myself included would love to see Bayless ready by the all-star break, but I really doubt it will happen. Though like people have pointed out, having our twin towers and a SG who plays half court PG is going to make the job of our 1 pretty easy. Bayless should be a great fit for the starting line up but still has work to do.

Blake...
until Bayless can prove he brings more to the table.
I’ve always thought it best to start your best 5 players and play them the most. However, when you’ve got Roy/LMA/Oden as your scoring core, how many touches will be left for the other 2? Blake and Martell fit well on the starting unit because they can snipe from 3 point land. I know Bayless is known as a scorer, but can he shoot lasers from deep consistently? I guess we’ll find out.

Blake
Blake – Excellent assist to TO ratio. Very good spot up shooter.
Decent defender and rebounder. Good leadership skills.
Has earned the starting role with good play, but needs to
keep it up.
Bayless – Will help with White unit scoring/athleticism. Needs to work
on playmaking and defense. Could be a starter 09-10 or
key player in the 2nd unit.
It's GO time !

What about the others?
I know this is a little bit of a tangent, but what about the other PGs in this years draft?
Would Westbrook, Augustine, Rose, or Mayo have a better chance than Bayless of starting on this team?
Out of all of them, I think Augustine would have the best chance because his workouts seemed to show that he had the most NBA ready game. He is also a tad older and more experienced running the point than all the others.
More on point: The other question about who starts/get a bulk of the minutes at PG is how much Roy takes over PG duties in the half court set. If the role of PG is simply to bring the ball up the floor, run the fast break, defend the opposing teams PG and hit the open shot and play more of a SG type role in the half court offense, Bayless may fit the bill a little better than Blake. Very early on, Bayless should be able to score off the dribble, get to the hole (and finish or draw a foul), and shoot off of screens much better than Blake. Ultimately, how we use Roy will determine who is the best fit at starting PG.

I want Bayless on the White Unit
I know our starters are going to be solid, but I want to see Bayless soaring up and down the court. I think from the perspective of how the two units compared last year, he will be more at home (and more electrifying) leading the White Unit, even if his skills and composure (miraculously) overshadow Blake’s.

I don't care for this season which of them starts
Just as long as Bayless doesn’t lose any confidence. Don’t jerk around with him. Nate was very indecisive early in the season last year. I would really like to see Rudy & Bayless know what they are going to play until they earn more minutes.

Voted Blake
Although I have high hopes for Bayless, I have even higher expectations for the Blazers next year. Blake is our man right now, Bayless is the future. If Bayless has a Rondo kind of year, then I am all for him starting. This looks pretty good to me.

I think we should make major trades
to break up those lineups.
I mean, it would be a shame to watch those lineups playing together, when we can suggest more trades instead.
That is the most likely rotation at the start of the year. That is why I’m predicting 55 wins.

Agreed
I agree with your choices there. I see Bayless giving us the main benefit of providing another scoring punch off the bench with Outlaw. Last year, Outlaw was the main option, this year..Bayless will provide another.
I have no objection to him starting, though, if Mix-Master Nate feels it's the right thing to do.
I’d say it’s more likely that Fernandez cracks the starting rotation at the SF position, depending on just how good he is.

Bayless is becoming overrated here
He has the potential to become a very good player, but don’t forget that he is just a 19 year old kid who still has a lot to prove. I think Rudy is actually much closer to being a starter than Bayless.

Here's an idea
As to your question about PG, it’s like jscot says—whoever earns it.
BUT … how about this lineup:
C Oden
F Batum
F Fernandez
G Bayless
G Koponen
An all-rookie team!

Roy, Sergio, and Rudy should have been included in that poll.
Rudy is more likely to start before Bayless.
