Yeah, wtf
I was just making a fanpost on this.
That was some great discussion and insight to what went on during draft day, and I think most of us are smart enough to realize that KP really did not weasel his way out of a deal with Charlotte.
So, what’s the point of deleting that post? It wasn’t proclaiming that KP was shady and backstabbed Charlotte, but it also gave us great insight on how things go down in the warroom.

yeah
I think that when Cats where picking KP called them and said that he wants DJ. So MJ asked to give him something like Webster and 13 for DJ, but KP said that he will give them Jack instead of Webster, MJ said no, but was thinking “since they like DJ they will come back to me”, so Charlotte drafted DJ. On the other hand KP called Charlotte and purpesly said that he wants Augustine so Charlotte would not pick Bayless, because the price for him would be even greater. KP knew that Bayless would fall all the way to 11, and thats why he called Indiana before the draft and made the deal then. Indiana already just traded for TJ Ford so they didnt need a point guard. But its still is weird why did Indiana didnt ask more for Bayless

I think KP leveraged charlotte's offer against Bird,
and Bird caved.

Ben
What’s next, if a rumor came out that we talked to Seattle about Westbrook are people going to think KP pritchslapped Seattle as well? Like KP said, this will always be remembered as the “smoke screen draft”. We talked up Westbrook and Augustine and other teams bit on it. We never agreed to a deal with Charlotte, or any other team until it was Indiana’s pick. I’m surprised at all the anger/confusion regarding KP. After all, we’re all Blazer fans and we just legally got the second best point guard in the draft. Go celebrate.

If you google "Anatomy Pritchslap" . . .
. . . you can see that the piece was getting HUGE attention all over.
This thing was linked to in a ton of places, including Newsweek.
I’m guessing it certainly got the attention of the Bobcats’ HQ, and some frantic calls took place.

That's exactly why
I put in the post that I wish he hadn’t posted it! THIS IS GOING TO BLOW UP NOW! Especially since it’s now been removed, which makes it look even more like KP did some shady stuff! Oh man, what a pickle, Dave must be pissed. Ben, if you need a job, I might be able to hook you up ; )

Luckily, all the other pages on the web . . .
. . . just have links to the (now-gone) original post.
Nobody posted a transcription of it, so it’s now gone.

He did nothing wrong.
I think a few people misread it the first time. There was that subtle shift, but I’ve seen you put out some nuanced ideas as well. The reader always has an obligation to try to understand what the author said. If we don’t do that, we might as well just all start yelling at each other now, and for no reason whatsoever. This isn’t CNN, tell everyone to bring their brains (which you certainly do, so please don’t take any offense).

Ben's theory is debunked
Someone told me that all the rumors of Augustin came from a text message from Pritchard to Quick. After the Augustin pick, Quick texted KP “Is this your guy?” Pritchard didn’t check his cell until Bayless was picked, he answered “Yes” Quick thought it was his answer to the Augustin pick. It was all a miscommunication. No red-herrings, misdirections, fake-outs, or broken promises.
The smokescreen was all pre-draft I believe. KP did all the work before the draft and Bayless landed in the right spot. This is much more plausible to me instead of the crazy dual trade proposals and subsequent hosing of MJ. Even though I liked the hosing MJ part.

NO WAY!!! That's perfect. Not sure how you know that, but I'll go ahead and believe it
Pretty much explains it all. Is there anyway you can give us some credibility. I believe you because I want to, but I’m sure there’s some that want something more than that.

remember
the rumor that went out about Blazers wanting to move up to #10, and would send #13,33, and J Jack. And in it they wanted DJ, so maybe that why Cats took DJ, after they saw that New Jersey would not deal with us.

Hey, yeah.
Maybe they thought they’d just take the Nets’ place in that deal, without actually consulting Portland first.

Just a note of clarificiation
since I see comments and questions popping up on the site.
I think Ben’s piece, both in its original form and now, is very good. I knew the moment I saw it that it would receive wide attention. Because of this there was one precaution we needed to take. In his original piece Ben had included some factual, observation-based information about what the view looked like on draft night from the media room. He also included some provocative and well-thought-out theoretical musings on what might have been behind those observations (e.g. a possible deal, or at least assumed deal, in place with the Bobcats). In the original post the line between the two was somewhat fuzzy, leaving readers open to the idea that there WAS a trade in place with Charlotte that the Blazers backed out of just as there WAS frenzied communication in the media room that night. Not having talked to Kevin Pritchard, Michael Jordan, or anyone on either staff about this issue we couldn’t leave that line unclear, especially since the post was going to be re-echoed throughout the ‘net. My stopgap solution was to put a small disclaimer at the front of the post and leave it as-is. Ben preferred to split the observational and speculative aspects of the post into two posts and two conversations, taking down the original. Since he is the author I left the decision in his hands.
In no way did I disapprove of Ben’s writing, in this story or otherwise. The piece and the conversation surrounding it was, and will be, excellent (as is usual with Ben’s work).

It was a very interesting discussion. The level of strategy that’s involved with being a good GM must be on par with a four-star general.

This is why the Main Stream Media has problems with Bloggers getting access
I’m not saying that a MSM writer wouldn’t make the same mistake. But this just fits into the stereotype that bloggers live in their basement, and do their work in their underwear.
I know that Ben was there; he WAS given access.
Ben’s been really good on this site, but a gaff like this is terrible. This has thrown mud on KP (even if it was not intended that way.)
I’ve worked in a news room before. I got the first name of a cancer patient wrong and it was printed in the paper. 18 years later, I still have the mental scars from my editor’s scalding words. Don’t think that this won’t get around the web; people find this stuff and remember.
You’ve got to have two sources to make a claim like this or a quote directly from KP.

I (with great respect) disagree
This has only to do with Ben. He’s the writer. He’s got to own this.
His, “blame the Blazers,” or “because we were remote,” or “because there were a lot of people in the echo chamber,” is no excuse.
He accused Pritchard of a move that was underhanded, plain and simple.
If Ben had written: “could this be possible?” before making the statement in question, no one - and I mean NO ONE - would have said boo about this. He did not. He wrote it as fact.
Perhaps he poorly worded the concept, but he wrote it.
Ben has to proof it. Ben has to double check it.
This should have been caught before it was posted.

I suppose I should explain more specifically
We are a blog, and not mainstream media. To the extent that we feature a post as “reporting” (which we do) we have the exact, same responsibilities as the MSM as far as factuality, sourcing, and such. But we also feature stories that are more theoretical, discussion-provoking, more along the lines of a newspaper column if you want to make a loose analogy. This is what makes us disctinct. This is also what gives the team and its fans added value through our coverage. Were we to simply duplicate what the MSM does we’d be redundant and fairly useless. When it works well it should be like the old Art Bell show before he got completely into the paranormal stuff. He did a lot of politics and news back in the day, with some UFO talk added for spice. That’s what we do.
As such, not only was there nothing wrong with Ben’s speculation about a possible deal with Charlotte, he was actually doing the job we set before him. In fact it would have been perfectly legitimate to title a post in big, bold letters “Did KP Screw Jordan?” and then proceed to talk about all of the reasons this could have been true.
In the midst of doing all of this, the one thing we have to be ultra sure of (as our responsibility to our readership and the team) is that we are clear in distinguishing between the two. To be fair to Ben, I think most people got a reasonable sense of the distinction in his original post. Many of the responses to his piece offered different theories, which shows people understood the Charlotte section was opinion as opposed to the more observational paragraphs. But we didn’t feel like “most” people understanding was enough. We wanted to be 100% sure that everyone was able to make the distinction. So we split the post into two, separating the observational and the theoretical, and that is where it remains. Those who like news and politics can chew on the media room observations. Those who like UFO talk can revel in the Charlotte “missing pick” theory. Neither part is in any way harmful as long as both are understood correctly.
I would say this is a pretty clear disctinction and responsible behavior. Nobody settled for being “mostly sure” or letting things go. Ben promptly moved to edit his pieces to make the disctinction and it was his choice to do so. For anyone who might not have gotten it at first he was even classy enough to offer an apology. From my point of view, that’s plenty good enough. I’ve unintentionally blurred distinctions as well from time to time, not realizing how my words were going to be interpreted until they were out there. The world didn’t end. Everybody moved on and the coverage and discussion have been better for it.

Thanks Dave
I do want you to know that I think that Ben is great. His stuff is insightful and interesting.
I get what you say about the differences between the MSM and Blogs.
Please just understand that I have a hunger for accurate information. That’s all.
And I do know that Ben thought that the information was accurate.
I must apologize to Ben. I reread my post and I think that it could be mistaken that I was comparing what he did to what I did when I was at the paper. Misspelling the name of someone fighting cancer is much worse than what Ben did. I was only trying to convey that I know how it works in a newsroom.
Again, Ben I’m sorry.
I love this site and the many voices that are here.
Please know that I now have dropped this topic. I’m on to better things.
