Sergio Expectations

So, after Sergio continues to presumably, play third string PG on this team, what is Portland to do with him?

Will people still blame Sergio not getting the playing time he "deserves" on Nate McMillan? Jarrett Jack is gone now, Blake will be presumably be gone within a year or twos end, and the question now is Sergio going to be that back-up to challenge Bayless?

Getting Bayless was a pretty huge no-confidence vote against Sergio.

What are your expectations of him and should Portland part with him sooner rather than later?

last chance

he has to come in to camp with a HUGE improvement in his game and confidence. He has to TAKE minutes from Blakewhile not losing them to Koponen. If he does, great, than Blake might be expendable at year’s end. If not, he’s a throw-in on a trade deadline deal or a draft day deal next year.

I have a feeling Sergio trade rumors will never end

He will get traded if it is part of a larger package. Being that he is not a salary cap liability, and that is our next goal, to get into the salary cap range that we want, he will stay unless he is part of a package to move someone else. Until after next summer he will still have a chance to prove himself. I think it would be great to hold on to him and give him the chance to develop into an incredible back-up, or at least battle it out with Koppenen for the spot. We have a ton of options at the point now, no need to pull the trigger on someone that can only do us good to keep.

Oh and FYI, Webster is the next one to get traded. Take a look at the poll here:

Yep. He has potential, though, if he can hang onto the ball.

little expectation

One of the off-season BE pleasures has been the lack of Sergio/JJ debate- it’s nice to move on, and one day it will be with fond amusement that we recall the impassioned dialogue that JJ vs Sarge evoked on this here blog during the 07/08 season.

I was always squarely in the JJ camp, and yet I’m glad he’s moved on, and that the Blazers are unencumbered by the well documented limitations of a gutsy player who’s likely reached his ceiling. I feel like Sergio is just as gone, and the day when he’s actually gone will go largely without fanfare.

My sense is that Sergio will be # 4 on the depth chart entering preseason, unless Blakey is traded. I don’t think Sergio is a trade candidate because he has little value, but I could see him being packaged as an add-on.

I guess my only expectation is that he’ll help Rudy acclimate.

At some point last year, I wrote that I’d be happy as heck to see Sergio prove me wrong and have the Blazer PG reigns during the coming glory years. I don’t feel that way anymore. I hope he returns to Spain, matures, and lives up to his own expectations in Europe.

by gardenofoden on Jun 27, 2008 8:33 PM PDT reply actions

it kills me to say this ...

But I agree, there’s really no place for Sergio here except maybe as Rudy’s translator. He’ll probably stick around this year but won’t get many minutes. He could really be good but he won’t fit here. That’s what it is.
I’m glad he outlasted Jack, though. I guess it’s kind of silly that it was JJ vs. Sergio when neither of them really amounted to much with us …

Rudy's english is pretty good from what I hear

I haven’t heard him speak in english though so I don’t really know if thats true. Anyway I was a Sergio believer at first, but lately I’ve been wanting him on this team less and less.

Spaniards at a level less than the rest of Central and Northern Europe but still prominently. If I remember right there are actually quite a few Englishmen in Spain, mostly there for employment, our very own Joel Freeland included.

You know,

there’s a lot of discussion about rodriguez, jack leaving, bayless coming in, and PK coming over from Finland. But really, the forgotten pg in this whole thing is Blake. I think we’re all selling him short a little bit by saying that he’s nothing more than a backup pg. I think he will do some very interesting things in the half court, especially now that he has Oden to throw the ball to in the post. He has never had an opportunity to play with a big man quite like Oden, neither in denver nor in portland. Although he is not a good transition pg, he runs the halfcourt really well.

well said. Blake deserves to start next season at point guard and I think he will barring any unforeseen trade.

rudys tour guide

I like the way Sergio brings the ball up court but he is a lamb lost in the woods on defense and that is what brings rings and why he has no future beyond being being Rudys pal for a year and going back to euro but he is a good guy and I wish him well.

calling it now

Sergio will hit that unfortunate third-year lull where the fanbase turns on him (see Jack, Webster, Outlaw). However, we’ll fill the void by demanding that Nate get over his mancrush on Blake and play Koponen more minutes.

Well that would mean Sergio would have to play

And…that’s not happening.

We haven’t turned on Webby yet, his age has kept most of the trade hounds off of him.

I don't think fans have turned on Webster or Outlaw

Outlaw is a fan favorite, and I know lots of Webster fans with his Jersey. I think the reason they get mentioned for trades is because they both have pretty high value but not a definite spot on this team for the future. Webster hasn’t yet lived up to his expectations (though I think we’ve all come to the realization that he will never be the caliber player we could have had that we passed up) but until he stops improving I don’t think fans will tire of him. I see what you mean but wouldn’t put Outlaw and Webby in the same sea as Jack let alone the same boat.

I would hate to see either of these guys go.

by Bskey on Jun 28, 2008 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions

they turned back

Since we have a team full of good character guys now, we can only really find it in us to take down one at a time. Webster is mostly on people’s good sides now, but a year ago you couldn’t click around some less-civilized fora (and even certain threads here) without constantly hearing about “Brickster” and “Flopster”. The year before that, Martell the rookie was going to making Outlaw expendable, since Outlaw was a moron with zero basketball IQ. Granted, those guys had Zach and Darius around to absorb the majority of the abuse—Jack was basically out there on his own. Rough timing.

should be traded for a future draft pick. There simply won’t be minutes available.

I agree

Our talent stock at PG just rose dramatically. Might as well recycle him into another 25ish pick we can use on another high potential Euro.

Sergio should be gone, long gone, long long gone. The only reason he isn’t is that it’s (in NBA terms) cost free to keep him hanging around. And Rudy needs a buddy. But the dude can’t shoot… NEXT!!!

Excellent question, Timbo, please tell us...

EL CLANKO SETS THE MARK IN 2007-08

FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE ........... 35.2%
3 POINT PERCENTAGE ................... 29.3%
FREE THROW PERCENTAGE........ 65.8%

Yes, that’s right. A guard on the charity stripe shot less than 66%. How does that rank in the NBA among his peers?

Tough year to evaluate

If you want stats that are more reflective of his skill you should look at his rookie stats, where he was according to Hollinger not a bad shooter.

Though not a 3-point shooter, Rodriguez made 56.3 percent of his long-range 2s last season [His rookie year]—one of the best rates in the league.

He should get a shot if he puts his mind too it, long range twos are threes in international ball. Look, his skills didn’t go away, his confidence and attitude did. Lets give him a chance to get them back before trading him away for peanuts on the dollar (or dollars on the Euro).

If there is one single GM who feels as you do...

......................... El Clanko should be on the boat to that team.

He had two really good games against Atlanta last year, and I say for the 43rd time, that’s where he’ll land.

But it’s essentially cost free to keep him around, so there’s no pressing need to trade him, pardon the pun.

I think

Sergio does have hope for his jump shot, so I wouldn’t be so quick to assume he will never get one.

If he does get traded it would be at the trading deadline. Giving Sergio enough time to give Rudy some english lessons and teaching him what buttons not to push on Nate. Also, I think KP would like to see Sergio and Oden play together just incase they are made for each other on the pick and roll. So, might as well be optimistic for a player who is coming back this year and who really wants to play in the NBA, given that he is probably losing millions playing here and not in Europe.

We have 10 solid players, And then, we have Sergio, Koponen, Batum, Diogu and LaFrentz. That’s just the way it goes. It’s tough to break into the Roy, Blake, Fernandez and Bayless group. Let’s face it. Blake already replaced Sergio/Jack in Mac’s rotation as the starter. Roy was never in doubt, and now you’ve not only added Fernandez, but the man KP and other teams has as the 4th best player in the entire draft. That’s good for the Blazer, but it’s really tough for Sergio. Like most, he’ll be gone in a year or so – or maybe less. We’ll probably keep him around through Fernandez’s first year, since everyone needs a friend and he’s not costing a lot. And, he’s a good kid. His best shot is to play out the string – and then if KP can’t find a backup slot on another team where he can have some fun and play, to go back to Europe, pick up his $2 million or so a year, and settle in there. Right now – he’s frustrated and his confidence has taken a hit.
