What if P.K. out-duels Bayles this Summer?

Play whoever is better
The goal is to win, and if Koponen is better then we’ll play him. Bayless would get minutes to develope in any case. I don’t think you play either enough that it sacrifices their development, but you definitely give the edge to the guy that’s better.
That would be a good problem

If he's close to being ready...
...now is the time for Koponen because if he doesn’t sign with the Blazers, he’ll sign a long term contract overseas, which may or may not be easy to buy him out. So it may come down to the summer league. However, i know KP wants a speedy PG to chase the other speedy PG in the league, so it may not matter unless he’s way better than Bayless.

He's kind of the odd man out
So he definitely needs to prove something this summer. But it’s not against Bayless. It’s to take Sergio’s spot as the 3rd point guard. We know that Steve Blake is steady and can shoot, pass, has height, and defends (what more can you ask from a backup point guard?) So in reality it’s Sergio vs. Petteri.
I don’t know if Bayless needs to prove anything this summer—being a highly touted rookie, he’s got the whole year (plus some) to prove he’s worth it.

Playing time
Isn’t won in summer league. It’ll be won in training camp and practice. Bayless has more league value and would certainly get to play anyways regardless of slumps.

I'm a little confused
I’ve seen some people saying that Bayless needs the ball to be effective, but I’ve read on draft sites that he plays best off the ball, and does his best work off screens. Don’t those contradict each other?

They would seem to
That’s the best thing about when many people start discussing one player. Suddenly 50 different qualities are simulatneously definitive.
I have no idea how to answer your question, and am curious just like you.

There's is contradiction
The right statement is that Bayless plays better without the ball in his hands at all times. At Arizona, he played shooting guard with Nic Wise as the point guard. All we need is for Bayless to bring the ball up the floor every once in a while, in order to take pressure off Brandon Roy. He is perfectly suited for this. The people who think Bayless does need the ball obviously never saw him play last year and are assuming his high scoring average correlates with a ball domineering attitude.
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people

Then I will shave my head into a faux hawk and the Finnish Playboy is ahead of Bayless
Boston coach Doc Rivers said he was surprised by the firing of Saunders.
"I don't understand it," Rivers said. "It makes coaching not fun."

Bayless played the sg much of the time with Wise
playing PG @ UA. When Wise went down, Bayless played PG but held on to the ball a little bit too much sometimes, but he was still good.
I would imgine that PetKo would play the 1 in summer league allowing Bayless to play off the ball much like he will with Roy being the primary ball handler.
The nice thing is that we will not have a true PG or a SG. We should now look at it like we have 3-4 Gs that can all score and pass interchangeably. Rudy, Bayless and Roy, are all scorers that can pass, to a certain extent PetKo is a scorer that can pass as he focused on scoring a lot more this year averaging 20ppg, while Blake and Sergio will provide the “pure” Pg if we need it.

From Draft Express
-The trade is between Indiana and Portland we’re informed. Jarrett Jack, Josh McRoberts and the #13 pick (Rush) for #11 (Jerryd Bayless). Indiana must have a trade exception. Kevin Pritchard does it again! What a great compliment for Brandon Roy. We’ve been talking about this all year long with Portland’s scouts…
Jarred Bayless is supposed to be a great compliment to Roy (Even NABdraft.net agrees). Much better than Koponen who had a hard time last year in summer league playing off the ball.
I don’t get it:
-Bayless= doesn’t need the ball
-Koponen=Bad summer league when asked to play off the ball at SG

roy doesnt have to play point with either of these 2
contrary to popular myth, Roy can play very well off the ball, ie allstar game

web sites and commentators
have to offer an opinion on potentially hundreds of players. This leads to people making authoritative-sounding comments on people and subjects they honestly don’t know as much as they pretend to. Hence, Bayless does-and-does-not need the ball depending on your favorite draft site.

Your English is very good, but all of us watched Summer League last year.

Bayless will be a starter
not right away – but when he starts to pour it in, you will all see. this was a draft-day STEAL! so awesome

I wonder how this idia
became so dominent, concerning roy needing the ball to be effective, maybee with a sub par point, but he seemed to do well, quite well infact during the allstar game with the ball, and wasnt he good enough in collage to get drafted6th in the nba draft not playing the point?
