So are we done?

Our new lineup looks like this:

Oden/Prz/RLEC

LMA/Frye/Diogu

Martell/Outlaw/Batum

Roy/Rudy

Blake/Bayless/Sergio/(Koponen)

That's a pretty balanced team right there. But I can't help but notice that RLEC staring me right in the face. Depending on Martell's production this next season, I could see the team saying this is it, this is who we go forward with.

Or maybe they still want to go get that "closer" that KP has talked about so often in the past. At this point I think such a player HAS to come at the SF position. The trade assets we have left amount to RLEC, Frye, Diogu, Martell, Blake, Sergio, Koponen, Freeland, and future picks. Does a combination of these assets net us a big name at the SF position?

Listening to KP on courtside last night, he said that he really likes what we have, but that there are still a couple other things they could do. Personally, I think they'll see what they have AT LEAST until the trade deadline, and then see what bubbles up for RLEC + a couple pieces. If Houston is struggling, does McGrady become available? Or would Battier make more sense? How about Stephen Jackson or Andre Iguodala or Tayshawn Prince if GS/Philly/Detroit get off to bad starts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy just seeing what we have. I like Martell and think he could be the starting SF for the next 10 years provided he gets a little better. But you can't help but think we need to make just one more move to seriously compete for a title as soon as two seasons from now. What do you guys think?

I think we are done

Let´s see what this team can do.

RLEC

Is valuable to us, too. Let it expire and clear cap room for the future.

I’m pretty happy with our roster right now.

I think Sergio needs to go and Webster's on notice

He’s gonna pout about not playing. Hope we keep Batum overseas because there is no playing time for him. If Batum signs, I think Webster could be shipped during the year if he doesn’t improve.

Let Sergio earn some minutes

see what he can do. Sure Webster is on notice. But I want to see that half year or year and see what he does. If he isn’t going to be the guy we need then KP will see it and make the slap… I mean trade.

If I had to guess

I’d say Koponen, Diogu and RLEC are the only available players until next draft, I think we’re done until next summer.

Also, I think Webster is going to EXPLODE this year.

by Kelsoballa on Jun 27, 2008 10:45 AM PDT   0 recs

disagree

Sergio is available, though likely has little value.

At mid-year, at least two of, and likely three of: Outlaw, Martel, Frye, and Diogu will be available.

What's next,

Steve Blake for Raymond felton? lol, the pritchslaps continue.

by premthegrem on Jun 27, 2008 11:03 AM PDT   0 recs

why would we want Raymond Felton?

Plenty or Chips to Play With

Let’s start with 1) we conserved all of our cap space; 2) we now have 4 – #2’s next year; and then 3, we have some pieces we may or may not choose to deal. LaFentz will go, and then in addition to Roy, Bayless, Fernandez, and Blake, we have both Koponen and Segio. And then, of course, we have Diogu as the 5th man at the PF/C spot, and Batum as the 3rd small forward. And if we were to actually look for a “closer” at SF, then we might look at Webster as well. So, if you look at it. We have a lot of room to maneuver. (LaFrentz, Sergio or Koponen or both, Batum or Webster, and possibly Diogu.

KP likes his top 10, said so, and has plenty of chips.

by Eben Calder on Jun 27, 2008 11:05 AM PDT   0 recs

How'd you get to 4 #2s next year?

Our own, Clippers’, and Chicago’s. Who’s got the 4th?

Wait, I think we have 4 not counting our own

So 5 total.

1 from the #55 pick trade
3 from the #36 pick trade
+ our own pick

I'd guess the next step is to showcase Martell and Sergio

for the first half of the season to develop them as potential trade bait to package with RLEC for a big midseason trade.

Bayless is a hell of a pickup (I wouldn’t have dreamed before yesterday that he’d have been available) but the kid’s 19. I’d give the bulk of the backup pg minutes to Sergio until the trade deadline.

by howlingfantods on Jun 27, 2008 11:34 AM PDT   0 recs

I don't think Sergio will get showcased.

More likely just benched permanently.

by pualo on Jun 27, 2008 1:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Time to stand pat

We should keep this roster (every key player) until the trade deadline at the very least, and maybe the whole season if the team is gelling and nothing great comes up with trades. The only trade I would like to do during the summer to consolidate a little bit is Sergio and Diogu for an expiring contract we can put on the inactive list and a good future first round pick. That leaves us with two units of:

Bayless/Roy/Webster/Aldridge/Oden
and
Blake/Fernandez/Outlaw/Frye/Pryzbilla
while
Koponen and Batum pick up the remaining scrap minutes and the rest are inactive

No reasons to complain; every single player in that rotation is quality. That roster itself could develop into a championship contender. If we stick with the roster for the season and it still has major issues to address, we can evaluate where we are and make moves with our cap space next summer. We’re in a pretty nice place right now.

by amitp06 on Jun 27, 2008 11:49 AM PDT   0 recs

Diogu

Having him Frye and LMA at the same position makes a log jam. Unless you consider that he is a 12th man. That may be the case, but his contract expires the same time as Fryes and Webbys. So the issue Dave mentioned earlier about cap space being eaten has not been solved yet. What will KP do next.

I remember the good old days. The Rasta Monsta days.

by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 27, 2008 12:16 PM PDT   0 recs

I think he's an 11th or 12th man

and I don’t think KP would have any problem cutting him at the end of next season if it helps our cap situation.

by pualo on Jun 27, 2008 1:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Diogu isn't here to get a bunch of minutes....

He is here to put the smack down if we need a bruiser. We have options. Frye is a gazelle PF, while Diogu is a bull. Depending on matchups, we can take our pick.

Diogu thus far has had a rough NBA career and a change of scenery will do him very good. Diogu dominated the Pac-10, much like former Pac-10 bruising forward Leon Powe did. If you think Powe was impressive for Boston, Diogu can be that type of fire off the bench if our staff can get him healthy and properly motivated. Even though he was a #8 overall pick 4 years ago, I’d be willing to bet that Ike Diogu would be happy to resurrect his career and be part of a winning organization that will pay him fairly. At this point, I think Ike can accept he will never be a franchise PF so winning might be the only thing that matters beyong getting paid. If he fits and KP/PA want him to stick, I am certain Daddy Warbucks (Paul Allen) can make it so. He’ll be affordable thanks to the RLEC retention.

If Portland makes the playoffs next year, it is going to be interesting IF the Blazers finally decide that “THIS IS OUR CORE TO WIN NOW”. Which is really only one season away.

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 27, 2008 5:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The fact is that ...

no player on our team is in a position to hold our cap space hostage. If there is a player that KP really wants to go after, he will simply cut whoever he needs to to get it done. I think it’s probably more likely that he agrees to resign most of these guys at a reasonable price long before they eat up our cap space with negotiations. KP has simply waited too long and worked too hard to develop this cap space window to let a couple players screw it up, no matter who they are.

40-50 Games to work it out.

I think we’ll play this out for 40-50 games. Then, we might see all the thoughts come together in some action related to cap/the #2’s/and a few players. We’ll see. Right now we seem to have a little too much of a good thing. Which is better than having too little. Bayless was the real deal here. And Batum may surprise. He only took an average of 7.6 shots per game last year. Think what his stats would have been if he had been taking what most of the US youngsters were taking – which is 15 – 20 per game. KP and Mac like this kid. And as Fernandez showed, we can’t under-estimate their judgement. There may be not just smoke – but some fire here which the way Batum was used on his last team didn’t showcase. If so – hang on. We may already have a pretty good “next” SF on the team – and not know it yet.

by Eben Calder on Jun 27, 2008 12:48 PM PDT   0 recs

You could be right.

But he’s so young yet that even if he’s the SF of the future I could see them bringing in a vet like McGrady to play the position for a few years until Batum’s ready to take over. But I think you’re right in that they’ll let it simmer for a little while to see how it works. But if it looks like they might make the playoffs AND have a chance to pick up someone to help at the deadline, I think they might bite.

A vet like McGrady???? Poison and over compensation.

Keep in mind that we already have THREE players for sure that are gonna be getting PAID.

LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden and Brandon Roy.

I think it is borderline comical that plenty of B-edgers think we need current All-Stars at every position AND all the young talent in the world on the bench to win a Championship.

Role playes in the mold of James Posey, Robert Horry, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins are a big part of the picture when thinking championships. These guys bring a lunchpail every day, McGrady brings a mirror so he can admire himself.

Leave the NBA “stars” of the Trail-Gangster era off our squad as that time of the NBA was/is full of underachievers. KP and Nate have a culture of hard-work and achievement, lets not poison our very healthy pool of talent. And I will never think that a guy like McGrady is going to put us over the edge. IMHO he would be a disruption from Day 1 and become a disliked Blazer when all was said and done. I want work-a-holics…

Haven't seen it all

I have a feeling that we haven’t seen it all yet. After listening to the press conference last night it sounded like there was more to come, as if there was some thing else done last night, but we have to wait until July 1, or the FA market to find it all out. I think he pulled off some good moves last night, but what has been reported in the media so far just doesn’t seem like enough to put him on “cloud nine”. He’s done more/better in the past, so I still have my seatbelt on, waiting for the real deal to be revealed.

Anyone else have this feeling?

by TheCurmudgeon on Jun 27, 2008 1:01 PM PDT   0 recs

If Bayless pans out like we hope, and Batum is worth anything

Then this draft will be remembered just as well for KP as the last two. Bayless might be just as good as Roy or Aldridge, and we got him for jack. Hard to argue with that. Of course, we won’t really know for a while.

by pualo on Jun 27, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There wont' be any more moves this summer

Unless it just involves third-stringers.

Our top 10 players look about as good as we can get them right now. I think whoever our 10th-best player is, he is probably the best 10th-best player in the NBA.

By next spring, we’ll have a whole fresh batch of information to base our decisions on.

by pualo on Jun 27, 2008 1:05 PM PDT   0 recs

No real holes

i agree. When KP says “we” hit a homerun, you have to let that settle in. Batum was top 15 last year, then played on a team where everyone played in the team concept and only got 7.6 shots per game. Double it, and he could well have been a top 10 this year. Bayless, in turn, was projected by many to be a future all-star. If you buy into the fact that KP believes this, then you have 4 very strong young players right now, plus the possibilities at SF, and then our second line at PG, SG, PF and Center. And I don’t really know what we’d be looking for until we let everyone play together for awhile. And, keep in mind, if KP is right again, as he was on Roy and Aldridge, then we have a powerhouse building up. Just what would we be looking for now? I can’t find a weakness other than youth and inexperience. But that will solve itself.
