Trade idea

Considering we made out like bandits on draft day without giving up any of our players with major value (RLEC, Martell, Trout, Frye, Sergio, Petteri) does anybody see KP standing pat for the rest of the Summer?  I'm guessing some serious roster consolidation is in the works.

I keep thinking that the addition of Diogu makes Frye expendable, and the addition of Bayless frees up a PG for a trade.

Here's what I was  thinking:

Portland recieves:

Shane Battier SF $5,883,600

Houston recieves:

Travis Outlaw SF $4,000,000

Channing Frye PF $2,480,240

Sergio Rodriguez or Petteri Koponen PG ~$800,000 (we'd have to give Petteri a contract for this to work, obviously)

Works on the ESPN trade machine, I'm just a little worried about giving up so much for a guy with his stats.  Battier is a hard working team player who can lock down any 2 or 3 in the league, but his numbers really aren't very good.   I mean, he  doesn't score, but with a frontcourt of Roy Rudy and Bayless, plus Aldridge and Oden do we really need another scorer?  He also shoots over 40% from three so that'd be a nice fourth/fifth option.  Plus he's a quintessential "culture guy."  I think it makes sense for Houston as well.

Bayless/Blake

Roy/Rudy

Battier/Martell

Aldridge/Diogu

Oden/Vanilla Gorrilla

Man I like the look of that.  Has everything: size, athleticism, depth, rebounding, solid D, scoring off the bench.  That's a championship team.  Plus we still have RLEC just in case.  Is there something obvious I'm missing why this wouldn't work.

No thank you

I’d rather have TROUT than Battier.

Me too

I dont like this because we are giving up two good young guns for a pretty good, yet not young guy. As good as Battier is, and as much as I would love to have him, this is way too much for him.

Are you kidding me?

Think up-side…Battier is good but he is on the down hill side of his NBA career. TO is on the up swing. Although I would love to have Battier on the Blazers but not for TO. He is a part of the untouchables along side roy, LA and Oden. Why do you think Nate made a public statement that TO will move over to full time small forward.

KP…We have our Championship Team as it stands. Next year Bayless will take over the PG slot and Blake will make a perfect off the bench PG. DONT make any more moves and the Blazers will be more then fine….

I'm usually not for standing pat and think we need a vet ...

But that’s WAY overrating Battier. Maybe in a couple years when our main guys mature a bit we can bring in a “4th/5th banana” like that but I would want much more return on losing Outlaw (Frye/Sergio I can live without).

by kickbrass on Jun 27, 2008 10:46 AM PDT   0 recs

Like who?

We are pretty set at every position except SF where we don’t have anyone who can play defense.

It’s possible to make your team better even if you have to give up more talent. I still think Martell and Trout are redundant (two streaky SF’s who are mediocre defenders) and one needs to go. I can’t think of a SF I’d rather have than Battier.

by AndrewD on Jun 27, 2008 10:48 AM PDT   0 recs

Are you afraid of success?

Well Web and Trout get a year to perfect their defense. Not lock down defense mind you but angle the offensive player toward Oden defense. Webster is getting better and putting forth the effort. Defense is 90% effort. Actually by the time you get to the NBA it becomes sooo much more than that but still, he has the body and the drive so he should be fine.

I think your trade idea is really, really, horrible. That’s just me mind you. I’m so thrilled that we kept our core guys. All of our core guys. I don’t want Battier unless its for two of our 2nd rounders. He’s 37 right? Not that he couldn’t be of value but who do you think he is, Charlie Joiner?

No Battier is not worth it. Period

I have a feeling KP is not going to make any more serious trades untill the deadline in Feb. and that will include somehow RLEC and some more peoples depending on who does or doesn;t contribute (eh um… Trout, Marty. Serg…)

I don’t think that Peteri is gonna sign this year. He probably needs to gain some more muscle and work on his defense. He will play in summer league, but will again not really matter cuz we will all be watching Bayless.

Sergio isn;t gonna be in Vegas though and neither will Greg, I wonder if Batum will be?

On a completely different note, is it true that Darrell Arthur was traded AGAIN and is now @ his 4th destination Memphis?

The Lakers aren't going anywhere

Who do we have on this team that can even slow Kobe down? Battier is 29 and the best 2/3 defender in the league, a team guy who isn’t going to complain about shots or minutes and will just reinforce the KP culture.

What’s to say if Trout/Martell really improve they aren’t going to start pushing for a bigger role, one that doesn’t exist?

by AndrewD on Jun 27, 2008 11:05 AM PDT   0 recs

this is BlazersEdge

where people get ganged up on every time they propose a trade if its not ridiculously one sided for the Blazers. This particular trade is a very reasonable one and would help the Blazers on day 1- I disagree with the people who say Outlaw is better than Battier- it’s just not true. Outlaw’s defense isn’t in the same league as Battier’s. Outlaw is much younger than Shane and still improving, and that makes this deal tough to sign off on (I don’t think I would). However, in my opinion your trade idea is much more reasonable than the majority of BEdgers would have you believe.

reasonable but

I think the trade itself is reasonable, I just don’t see it happening. KP just commited to Outlaw by his actions (and non-actions) yesterday. He isn’t going to change that now unless he gets an unbelievable offer. Battier is not that offer.

We put a hurting on LA last season without Oden...

Did you see how soft they were? We’ll punish them inside, and slash on them from the outside.

Martel and Outlaw

I think the hidden story from yesterday is that we are giving both of these guys a legitimate shot to lock up their spot in our future. If we were going to move them, I think we would have either done so yesterday, or at least brought in another SF during the day. We head into the season figuring these guys will split the SF minutes, and we hope one of them becomes our long term starting 3.

Either:
  • they both prove they belong, and we go forward with the 2-headed SF
  • one of them steps up and the other gets moved
  • both fail and we package them and other assets for a quality veteran starting 3.

by douglast on Jun 27, 2008 11:11 AM PDT   0 recs

No. No. And more No.

Why wouldn’t you want KP and Nate to really get a chance to assess what we have before we start shuffling again.

Remeber that this is a team that went 41-41 last year in a tough Western Conference. Now, all our youngsters are 1-year-more-improved and we have added PG Jarryd Bayless, SG Rudy Fernandez, SF Nicolas Batum, PF Ike Diogu and C GREG ODEN into the mix, and really all we let go was Jarrett Jack and James Jones and Von Wafer and Josh McRoberts.

Our starting line-up and key sixth man that got us to 41-41 are still in tact and we add these guys. I love it and think we need to hold pat at least until we see how these guys play with Greg Oden. Oden is the centerpiece of this franchise and his game is the most important. If guys go well with Oden then they should have a place on this team.

The best part of keeping RLEC is that we will have good cap room IF we need to make a move, but that we have a great great great core of youngsters already that Portland has the rights to. Our Billionaire owner Paul Allen could keep all of them if KP thinks we need them to win a Championship as PA can afford the luxury tax if needed. We are “Squatting” in high cotton my friends.

No Trade Unitl Spring

We have 10 good players right now.
We have all of our cap space, and we have 4 – #2’s. Add to this the fact that we have six guards, of which Sergio and Koponen are 5 & 6, three SF’s, of which Batum is #3, and 6 PF/C types of whichDiogu and Lafrentz are 5 & 6.

I don’t think we’ll see any more substantive action until early next spring. We might shuffle a few fringe players, but consider several Blazer Brass Comments.]

1) KP – I realy love our top 10 players.
2) Outlaw will be the starting SF next year.
3) We just nailed down Bayless to add to Blake, Roy and Fernandez.. Fernandez wouldn’t have come if they didn’t promise him a real shot, and Bayless – at #4 on KP’s board in this draft – isn’t going anywhere. You don’t, after all, trade the 4th best player in the draft. Those types are keepers.

Now, granted, we have all the pieces for a trade come early spring before the deadline hits. Cap space, 4-#2’s, and other players which, if the only position left is SF, could include Webster if the player was right.

What I can’t see right now, however, is any further action on guards. After all, Bayless may mature into a very good PG. Remember, he was moved to SG at Arizona because of injuries. At the same time, at 6’3” and 200 lbs, he has some superb physical skills, to include the ability to defend other PG’s as well as fit with Roy. We didn’t need a pure “PG”, because Roy will also handle the ball at times. Bayless will also do both. The team will grow. After 50 games of the season, both Outlaw and Webster will have showed more of what we can expect. If it’s good enough – they’ll stay. If not, KP stockpiled all the pieces required to get a Vet if and when he chooses.

I keep catching this Outlaw will start at SF next year...

Did I miss something?

I know they said he would play exclusively at the 3… but when did they say he would start at the 3?

I think he still comes off the bench.

this is my confusion...

I know they said he’d be exclusively at the 3, I just never heard that he was a lock as a starter.

Does anyone have a link?

Canzano made the same remark in his column today, but I think that is just his assertion as he didn’t quote anyone.

Not a starter,

just that he will be primarily playing at the 3. Martell makes more sense as the starter as he is a better defender, has a higher BB IQ, and Travis is so effective as our Vinny Johnson. I think we can probably expect 20-26 points/game from the 3 position this year, which is a lot more than Battier would produce. Of course, unless Martell and Travis improve on defense, they will permit opposing SFs to score more than Battier would.

by crakarjack on Jun 27, 2008 5:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

nah nope nyet nein

excuse me but are you on drugs or something? Why the heck do we need Battier? And why give up Trout and Frye to get a guy we don’t need?

Maybe you’re just bored stiff.

Winning is everything.

by MT Suit on Jun 27, 2008 1:10 PM PDT   0 recs

Not on drugs

But not drinking whatever Kool-Aid you guys have found either.

Don’t need Battier? Battier is EXACTLY who we need. Look, I honestly don’t even want a scorer at SF. We can get points at the other 4 positions, and when you have a bunch of guys who want shots problems are bound to happen. Every championship team needs a lockdown “glue guy.”

We need a James Posey or Bruce Bowen type. A guy who doesn’ t need shots and won’t complain about being told to bust his butt for little recognition. A guy who takes charges and picks up his teammates.

I honestly don’t see how you could look at this roster and not think Battier is a MUCH better fit than Trout, or at least the Trout we saw last season. Defensive liability, streaky scorer, questionable shot selection… Sure he can jump really high and is a nice guy and all, but Battier is exactly the type of wily veteran defender who could guard the LeBron’s and Kobe’s of the world which would free up our scorers (of which there are many), help keep Oden out of foul trouble and fit our culture. Imagine if Brandon didn’t have to chase T-Mac or (again) Kobe around all game. Frye and [PG] would just be filler (love Channing as a guy but at this point he’s perfect trade bait).

The more I think about it, the more I really believe this deal would be a HUGE improvement for the Blazers.

Battier is Sweet

He’s one of the best lockdown defenders in the league. Despite what people say about defense being effort only, those guys don’t grow on trees.

That being said, the fact he is already 30 makes this a no go for me. If he were 27 I’d think long and hard about it. Another veteran presence would be much valued in the locker room, and he’s about a classy a guy as they come.

by Dave R on Jun 27, 2008 1:20 PM PDT   0 recs

Great Trade

I would like this trade as much as I do the Bayless trade. And I have a question for all the people who say that Outlaw and Webster will learn to be great defenders. If it is so simple, why haven’t they already done it? Outlaw has been in the league 5 years and he is stll below average defensively.

by zach2046 on Jun 27, 2008 1:22 PM PDT   0 recs

Outlaw may never

become a good one on one defender, but he should improve on team defense and recognition. Martell is still very young, never learned at the college level, but has shown an ability to learn, has the tools to do it, and has shown quite a bit of improvement.
