Kudos to Stumptown Doug!

After the draft I started searching for mentions of "Jerryd Bayless" on BE, and found a prescient post by Mr. Stumptown (or is it Mr. Doug?) in which he called Bayless as the guy the Blazers were targeting. Here is the URL:

When next I looked for other epistles from the prophet, I found this reply to a fanpost question  about who the Blazers wanted with the #27 pick.  Lo and behold, he rightly said it was Batum. Here again is the URL:

Ladies and gentlemen, may we have a round of e-applause for Stumptown Doug!

I dont mean to toot my own horn but

http://www.blazersedge.com/2007/12/19/181434/04

I called my shot.

Thank you, thank you. It just feels great that we got such a talent for so cheap and the fact that I called it doesnt even compare to the fact that we got him in reallife.

Actually, I think you DO mean to toot your own horn.

But nice call anyhow.

That you did.

Cudos for that.

You also called for Mayo Gordon and Westbrook. But I thought you were nuts and I was wrong. Now I’m hoping that I’m also wrong about Bayless, because I am not exactly enamoured with him. I really, really want you to have the last word on this as well. I’m rooting for you spyder.

As an aside – while watching the draft and seeing us select Rush, I wanted to get on the computer and see what folks were saying. I was thinking of pointing out how happy I was to see Pritchard take a guy I was high on. That certainly didn’t last long.

In my own little act of shameless self promotion

Here is me talking about why we should take Jerryd Bayless if possible at about 1PM today (It’s pasted below as well). I did a little statistical comparison between Bayless and Chauncy Billups’ college numbers.

Here’s me lusting after Bayless earlier today:

A small comparison

Was watching the 1997 NBA Draft this morning and saw

Chauncy Billups
6’3 203 pounds
32.7 MPG
.401 3 Point%
.413 FG%
.854 FT%
19.1 PPG
4.9 RPG
4.8 APG

This reminded me a lot of Jerryd Bayless

Jerryd Bayless
6’3 202 pounds
35.7 MPG
.407 3 Point%
.457 FG%
.839 FT%
19.7 PPG
2.7 RPG
4.0 APG

If Jerryd can even get to 80% of Billups, I think that’s a solid pick. I think he’s got the chance to be as good or even slightly better. I voted for Bayless over Westbrook, who is still largely unproven, even though I love both of them.

Here’s me on May 23rd (read below or link):

I would like to see the Blazers trade their 13 pick

Up with JJ to get Westbrook. However, if they can’t, and if Westbrook is gone at 13, I’m all for picking up Batum. You can stash him in Euro for a few years, allowing him to develop "au natural"

Your risk-reward is pretty good there as well. He’s not going to be coming in crying for minutes or upsetting team chemistry. It gives you time to see who on our roster is worth keeping, and who isn’t. It helps alleviate our minute crunch, so we can give Rudy some time to see what he can do. Heck, maybe we even give Sergio some time if he comes back next year with an improved game and attitude.

So all in all, I’m pretty satisfied. I honestly didn’t think we could get Bayless for 13 and Jack, and certainly didn’t think we would get Batum late in the first round with a bought pick from NO, but hey! Way to be KP!

Anyway, sorry for the self promotion, but I dig the draft and draft predictions.
Props to Stumptown and SpyderRyder for doing pretty well as well.

I called it at 1030 am before I left for work in the rumors and speculation fanpost

But my original shot was getting Calderon.

I also thought that Koufos would be a Blazer.

I’ve been right about the #1 pick 4 years running.

Webster (although I wish now that I was wrong)
Roy (but I thought a move down to get him, no clue on LMA)
Oden (almost everyone had this one)
Bayless (I just had a hunch and I thought KP would have to move to #5 to get him.)

Also

If I were GM, my moves yesterday would have killed our cap. Thank goodness I’m not in charge!

Clearing Room For The Blazers Out West

As the playoff picture begins to take shape it becomes clear that the Western Conference is one big game of musical chairs. There are nine viable playoff teams; unfortunately there are only eight playoff spots. For the Blazers to get a spot, one of last year's playoff teams needs to fall off. Someone's going to be caught standing when the music stops. The following are possible scenarios that could derail each team on their quest for playoff glory, helping the Blazers get back to the postseason for the first time since 2003.

Check out the other scenarios over at Bustabucket
