SA bested by KP - Batum
Where is Batum’s Physical?
Multiple teams reached out to us today wondering whether we have gotten a hold of Nicolas Batum’s physical yet. Batum underwent a series of heart tests in Cleveland on Monday and was cleared for workouts immediately afterwards, but still his physical is nowhere to be found. Batum traveled to San Antonio immediately after and was supposed to work out for Cleveland today. Some teams openly are wondering whether San Antonio gave Batum a promise and asked him to not distribute his physical around the league, which would make him very likely to slip to 26.
Batum is obviously a great fit in San Antonio, as the team already has two French players on their roster (Tony Parker and Ian Mahinmi) and sport a very aging perimeter with wing players such as Michael Finley (35 years old), Brent Barry (36 years old) and Bruce Bowen (37 years old) who will soon be clearing up plenty of playing time for an athletic, unselfish, defensive minded prospect such as Batum. He appears to be fully healthy, but it appears that only the Spurs and the Cavs currently have his physical. Multiple calls to Batum’s agent Bouna Ndiaye were not returned.
Just when SA thought they had Batman....

First time I don't like a move by KP
I really thought we got THE steal of the draft in Arthur, and he would have been the perfect energy guy for this team. A championship experienced player who could contribute right away for this team next year. Batnum has bust written all over him, from his attitude to his still limited game. He has a lot of hype around him, but I am just not buying into it, which is odd because normally I do buy into the hype of players like him. Hopefully KP will make me look like a fool, but for now, this was one trade I wish we didn’t make.

How can you call him a bust? His name is Batum, not Batnum.
Arthur wasn’t going to get any time. We’re looking for roster spots here. Maybe they keep the Euro over there for a bit. Makes a lot of sense to me. Plus, KP got to pull one over on the Spurs. Gotta take that oppurtunity.

I don’t think we ever had a shot at Arthur. My bet is that Houston was going to select him at 25 but we made it worth the risk that the Spurs would pass on Arthur by giving them the 33rd pick. If we didn’t offer 33 then Houston takes Arthur and Spurs take Batum and we are stuck with one of the other Euros.

Which is pretty good from a guy named Malarky.

That was my thought too
But if it is, that took some guts to guess that SA wouldn’t take Arthur.

if they did,
i’m assuming the deal would fall through, and Pritchard wouldn’ t have lost anything, but be back to square one (so to speak). It was gutsy of Houston, though.

At that pick,
I think the projections really fly out the window, (obviously). If things truly don’t work out, Houston would make a deal with SA and try to get Arthur, and Batum would go to SA (who actually wants him). SA totally got fleeced on this though (as far as the actual trading goes). Whether Batum actually pans out remains to be seen….

energy guy is easier to find, talented guy is harder
Look at guys like Landry, Millsap, Turiaf, Leon Powe, Glen Davis… all 2nd picks. You can always grab an energy guy or two in the second round. Don’t forget Portland happen to own a lot of future 2nd round picks…

maybe...
we try to get something from SA for him then?
by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 8:34 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I was skeptical too
...but he’s probably going to stay in Europe at least one more year, which will give us time to evaluate Martell again…besides, in KP we trust!

This deal enables the team to get one more year to watch TO, Marty, Frye...
................................... stashing a Euro.
Worked good with Rudy, anyway, there might be something to this theory.

"an athletic, unselfish, defensive minded prospect such as Batnum"
If you have doubt about Batman, check out his Draft workout at WORKOUT
He goes one-on-one with Joe Alexander. Joe crushes him both time but, Batman scores on both plays.

I don't like this pick either.
I read on espn that Batum’s per and other stats puts a bust tag all over him, while arthur is considered to have one of the highest PER’s in the draft. The biggest thing that makes me not like this deal is that Portland also allegedly traded the 36th pick, which was used to select the center Omer Asik (or something). That guy was listed in the same article that called batum a bust as a player that projects statistically to be equal to or better than galinari. I don’t like this move, but I understand it…kind of. We don’t have space for Arthur. I think we will regret dealing Omer whateverhisnameis.

Thank you KP (and SpyderRyder)...
Others will grow to value the unselfish, athletic, defensive players chosen today.
But for us that have checked their value out already…. HIP-HIP, Hurray!

For you SpyderRyder:
Bayless at 11 obviously is a great pick. Reminiscent of Danny Granger falling to them at 17 a few years back. People around the league are going to look very stupid in a few years. We had him pegged as a top 5 player in this draft all along and still think he will be just fine.from NBA Draft
-The trade is between Indiana and Portland we’re informed. Jarrett Jack, Josh McRoberts and the #13 pick (Rush) for #11 (Jerryd Bayless). Indiana must have a trade exception. Kevin Pritchard does it again! What a great compliment for Brandon Roy. We’ve been talking about this all year long with Portland’s scouts…

is the one that went down, and not this one. I trust KP to make me look like a fool, however I am a bit dissappointed for tonight.

Basically,
Batum to Blazers
Donte Greene and Joey Dorsey to Houston
2nd round pick from Grizzlies to Houston.
No mention what Grizzlies would get in this deal.
by usmcr3049 on Jun 26, 2008 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
which means it would have to be Arthur
they can’t just give away their stuff (though they probably would like to), and we can’t trade the 33 for the 25 witout giving up something else.
by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
you would think
But hey Seattle got what’s his butt from PHX for a future 2nd rounder, so I think we could to something like that as well, you never know.

maybe we give them a future first or second round pick or ike digou(i don't know how to spell his name)

This trade is weird, I wonder if KP was forced into it.
Think about it: Houston is at 25. They want Arthur.
SA is at 26, they want Batum.
Portland wants BPA, but will end up losing out on both of these guys if they don’t deal with one of the teams. I don’t know if it’s possible, but maybe tHouston realized that they could get Arthur plus a 2nd rounder by dealing with us, and also knew that we would be interested in the deal because otherwise we would lose out on both prospects. If this is what went down in KP’s war room, I have to say that the deal isn’t that bad, especially if these guys were the top players on our board at the time. We shouldn’t sell KP short if this is what happened, because it shows that we did the best with whatever pieces we had. I do wish we had kept Dorsey instead of Omer instead.

So can we start calling Batum Batman now?
Is he ready to take on that cult favorite role from Sergio? Many tough questions to answer.
Boston coach Doc Rivers said he was surprised by the firing of Saunders.
"I don't understand it," Rivers said. "It makes coaching not fun."
