Updated Blazers Roster & 2009 Salary Projections

Roster Locks:

  1. PG Steve Blake
  2. PG Jarryd Bayless
  3. PG Sergio Rodriguez
  4. SG Brandon Roy
  5. SG Rudy Fernandez
  6. SF Travis Outlaw
  7. SF Martel Webster
  8. PF LaMarcus Aldridge
  9. PF Channing Frye
  10. PF Ike Diogu
  11. C Greg Oden
  12. C Joel Pryzbilla
  13. C Raef LaFrentz

Others we own the draft rights to:

  1. Petteri Koponen (2007 #30)
  2. Joel Freeland (2006 #30)
  3. Nicolas Batum (2008 #25)

I think Petteri has a roster spot, unless he stinks up summer league. the last spot could be held open for in-season flexibility.

Summer 2009 Salary Projection:

Including an estimate for Bayless, our cap next summer is at ~$30 million, which includes the following contracts: Joel,Oden,LMA,Outlaw,Roy,Sergio,Bayless,Rudy (8 players).  NOT included are

  1. Blake option (~4.5 million)
  2. Martel, Frye, and Diogu cap holds (11.3, 9.5, 8.7 respectively) or new contract amounts
  3. Petteri Koponen (~1 million)

You sure about Batum?

I think he’s gone for good if he doesn’t get a roster spot. I think he is definitely worth a look. Alot of draft boards had him in the top ten a couple of weeks ago…

I think this is a bit premature.

But it could still be right.

I'll update the main post if/when needed

I saw a lot of people asking about roster space, so I figured I’d throw this up there so people could keep track

Looks like its done

Arthur and Dorsey for Batum. Batum stays in Europe for at least a year.

by VinnyB on Jun 26, 2008 8:12 PM PDT   0 recs

Wasn't Batum originally in the first round?

Doesn’t that mean he’s guaranteed a contract.

by raoulduke on Jun 26, 2008 8:23 PM PDT   0 recs

freeland, koponen, and rudy

were all drafted in the 1st round too. the contract guarantee starts when they come over, we offer a contract, and they sign it.

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 8:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

it's not all up to him though

we don’t have to offer him a contract, in which case his options are:
1) play in Europe until we decide to bring him over (or trade his rights to someone whoe will)
2) not play anywhere until next years draft, then re-enter the draft.

KP quoted as saying, "This year"
I spoke with Portland GM Kevin Pritchard tonight and he says he thinks Batum will actually sign with the Blazers this year.

still works

put him in the D league with Koponen.

You have a lot of HATE for Batum?

There is currently room on the roster for both Koponen and Batum.

You can get more knowledgeable of both player by tuning into the Summer League.

by spencerbutte on Jun 27, 2008 12:58 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

not sure how you read that as hate

it’s just pure numbers. he really can’t crack the rotation at this point. if we sign him now, I’ve got no problem with that. all i am saying is that he’ll be better off getting playing time in Idaho than he will be sitting on the end of the bench in street clothes

by douglast on Jun 27, 2008 3:42 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Most recent noise on the radio confirms he's staying in Europe.

It’s kind of cool, what Pritchard has done is take 5 draft picks and an overcrowded roster and turn them into two solid players this year, one high ceiling player for the future and thin the roster without getting rid of any of the frye travis martell crew.

Two thumbs up.

by raoulduke on Jun 26, 2008 8:53 PM PDT   0 recs

I agree

Remeber the argument between whether we should trade up for a top caliber point guard, or stand pat and keep our team together?

Somehow, KP did both.

by pualo on Jun 26, 2008 9:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Very impressive

I did not expect this. This is incredible.

Roster Consolidation without any of the bad parts of Roster Consolidation.

golf clap

And if NB (Niko Bellic?) stays in France, that’s great for our roster too.

by rmcdougall on Jun 26, 2008 10:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

and add to that, we still have a TON of flexibility:
  • RLEC
  • 2009 cap space
  • Trade Pieces: Outlaw, Frye, Martel, Blake, Sergio, Diogu, Euros

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 9:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

We traded Asik

Im pretty sure we got 3 second rounders in return from the Bulls

Holy crap that is a roster!

Man, can you believe it Wow! We can have Bayless, Roy, Webster, Aldridge, Oden, Fernandez and Outlaw(plus a few more) together as a core for the next 10-12 years. Unbelievable!

by danielfarrell on Jun 26, 2008 9:40 PM PDT   0 recs

KP said he loves our top 10

which doesn’t include Sergio, Ike and RLEC.

We’ve STILL got the assets to make a MAJOR trade this summer or at the trade deadline.

Unbelievable Draft yet again by KP

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 9:56 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

We didn't get our annual

free complimentary player from Phoenix this year:(

I thought that was a nice tradition.

by raoulduke on Jun 26, 2008 10:28 PM PDT   0 recs

Stern ordered us to share the love (and cash)

so this year was the Hornet’s turn.

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 10:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah but why trade Arthur for Batum if Batum is gonna sign with us this year?

That part doesn’t make sense to me. Arthur is a heckuva player and Batum is kinda suspect. Plus we had to throw in Dorsey. Why dump Arthur and Dorsey for a lesser player unless the lesser player is sure to play another year or two in Euroland? I’m puzzled over this move.

But of course I am ecstatic to get Bayless. I think Bayless is gonna be very proficient in the NBA. Better than Derron Williams but not quite as good as Chris Paul.

Winning is everything.

by MT Suit on Jun 26, 2008 11:00 PM PDT   0 recs

in another thread, someone speculated

that Houston was set to take Arthur, which would have left SA taking Batum, and us with neither. Or at least Houston told us that and asked what we would throw in to jump up 2 spots. we added the 33, stole Batum from the Spurs, and Houston still got the guy they wanted, plus another pick.

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 11:05 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

And the Blazers couldn't have kept both Arthur and Dorsey

Not enough roster space. They needed a twofer.

by raoulduke on Jun 26, 2008 11:07 PM PDT   0 recs

KP is all about targeting players and landing them...

.............................. and he wanted Batum.

There ya go.
