A new form of Pritchslap: Bayless
Kevin Pritchard has done it again. For weeks he has been leaking that the Blazers are in love with Westbrook, Augustin, and Alexander. Consequently, those guys shoot up the draft chart, as all the other GMs try to outsmart KP. Meanwhile, KP is secretly in love with Bayless but says NOTHING about it to anyone. Other GMs don't hear any talk about Bayless out of genious Pritchard....so they let him drop lower and lower in the draft. They KP swoops in and picks him up.
Remember, this guy was a consenus #4 just a week ago. And now we get him (apparently) for just 13 and Jack. Who would have imagined? Pritchard has done it again, and he did it by manipulating everyone, playing off of his reputation to change the order of draft and get who he wanted all along. Simply amazing.
Update: Ike Diogu too? Even better.

i doubt
that the entire NBA basis their picks of of KP. And im glad they sonics picked westbrook. He is less of a threat along side KD.
and I suspect
that THEY based their pick on KP. Because… yeah… they were STOOPID

I LOVE this pick
mocks seemed to say he could start slipping the last day or two, so I started doing some research on him. I think he is a PERFECT fit in our backcourt.
check out his DraftExpress profile:

Strengths:• Explosiveness
• Complete package offensively
• Perimeter shooting
• NBA range
• Ability to create shot
• Confidence
• Ball-handling ability
• Unselfishness
• Committed to playing defense
• Lateral quickness
- Stuck between 1 and 2
• Average wingspan
• Better scorer than playmaker
• Better playing off the ball
• Undersized for SG
• Decision-making in half-court
• Struggles to create shots w/left hand
• Shot-selection
• Ability to defend SGs
• Needs time to develop
The strenghts are exactly what we need in our PG, and the weaknesses are covered up by the fact that he’ll be an off-the-ball player for us in the halfcourt.
I LOVE this kid
Oh yeah
Key points:
-good shooter
-good defender
-has enough PG skills for our needs
-can play off the ball
Hard to draw it up better, really.
Yes, yes, yes
Bayless isn’t a perfect fit a lot of places, but I love him as a Blazer. You worry about him guarding SG because of size and reach, but he’ll be fine, maybe great at guarding PGs. He’s plenty quick. He is taller and has a longer reach than the average first round PG, even with the T-REX arms. He’s a pure shooter. He’s can drive to the basket. He’s perfect. AMAZING. Amazing that they did it with relatively little pain. Love this pick and deal.
My question: what the hell is the use of these other picks? Starting a new all Blazer European squad for Paul Allen to watch?
Do we need another scorer?
I want a premier defender or Oden is going to foul out in the first ten minutes.

Very interesting thought
I was just thinking the same thing. I was pretty concerned about DJ’s size and would have been surprised if KP and Nate were really serious about him.
We don’t need a pure PG anyway. Just an athletic ball-handler that can shoot and defense is a plus.
Westbrook was my fave but Bayless def has a place on our squad.

Since the Sonics were were high on Bayless forever maybe we could get Westbrook for almost nothing. Maybe just Bayless + the 27th and a second rounder.

No, Bayless is better

Yeah I'd keep Bayless
I think good shooting is important in our PG. Bayless has that and Westbrook does not.
possible pawn?
I’m probably over thinking this, but maybe KP picked up Bayless to make any move to get Devin Harris from the Nets easier for them to swallow with a younger and cheaper point guard…?
I could live with that as well.
Bayles is WAYYYYYYYY better then Westbrook. That was all KP smoke and mirrors.
;)
He's Coming! Oden Slayer of Giants
THANK YOU.
Can we officially end the Westbrook mania? If in three years out better, then bring it up.

will do good things if we can find him some minutes.

I'm concerned with Bayless' reaction .....
and that of his entire family. When the announcement came that he was selected by Indiana, there was not one smile …. from Bayless or any of the family! I thought that was so strange, and that was before I knew the Blazers would end up getting him. Nor did he seem at all pleased when he was interviewed after being told he suddenly became a Blazer. Will any of this matter? Perhaps not. But I’ll be suspicious of his attitude for awhile.
On the bright side we got a talented guy, giving up only Nate’s boy Jack that I think will prove to be beneficial. Bet KP is happy …. Nate not so much.
And, for sure we got a good talent. He’ll be SO much better than Jack. But of course the story of this draft for the Blazers hasn’t yet played out. More to come I suspect.
He was mocked as high as 4
that’s what he was sad about. He lost a couple hundred grand as he saw it. Not a smiley thing, ya know.
Also, KP said that’s likely it. He REALLY likes the team. Bayless will be happy eventually.

4 versus 11
Bayless’ family wishes it was only a few hundred grand…
I can’t find the rookie contract scale for 2008-9, but here is what it was in 2005-6 according to this article from draftexpresscom:
4th pick:
Year 1 – $2.6 million; Year 2 – $2.8 million; Year 3 – $3.0 million
11th pick:
Year 1 – $1.5 million; Year 3 – $1.6 million; Year 3 – $1.7 million.
So…. I can totally understand why he was bummed, and his family was absolutely crushed (especially since he could have waited a year in order to be the likely #1 PG in the draft).
He’ll get over it once he gets here, and once he sees what a train wreck Westbrook (who should have NEVER been picked as high as #4 – total overreaction to Rondo’s success and paranoia about how to defend CP3 et al) has walked into.

think paul pierce or caron butler
remember when they fell to 10. they were disappointed too and took it out on the league.
I was concerned too, BUT....
Hey, this kid never worked out for Portland. He never met with Kevin Pritchard, Nate Mac10, or visited our city or facilities. He was in shock and that is what I am chalking it up too. Let’s be honest with ourselves, the reaction that Brandon Rush had is what any player would have if they had the opportunity to visit Portland.
Bayless was in shock. First of all, he fell quite a few spots from #4 all the way to #11. Then he is traded to a team that he never met… I bet his head was swimming.
When the dust settles, is there a better starting point guard role to be had that one that is surrounded by big-man Greg Oden, all-star off-guard Brandon Roy and versatile PF LaMarcus Aldridge. Once it sinks in Jarryd Bayless will be stoked… just like we are!!!

You only covered half of what happened
I 100% agree that this was what is the most overly used phrase on this website for the last few weeks. I’ll say it loud, I’ll say it proud, no matter how cliche it is becoming. IT WAS A PRITCHSLAP. I don’t think the entire NBA based thier draft on KP. Maybe Seattle registered a little of what he was saying, but the slip happened. That was just the initial fortunate circumstance. Then the real genius begun.
Once the Bobcats picked up Augustin, KP made a move. He had everyone thinking that was thier guy. Ben reported that we got him, which apparently O-live was reporting too (I don’t know where Ben go the info, but he wasn’t the only one to take KP’s bait). I was feeling miserable because I really wanted either Westbrook or Bayless. Honestly, I loved Bayless for a while, but thought he was too valuable to get to. But alas, the trade was announced (but not official) and Blazermania seemed heart broken (I speak only of the reaction that I saw). Then we picked. Still no official word. Everyone is scratching thier heads here and I’m sure the other GMs were too. The whole time Indy thinks the value of Bayless is dropping, who they obviously had no intention of keeping. So what finally evolves, we get Bayless (a perfect fit and a top 4 pick by most mock drafts in the country) plus one for a guy we wanted to get rid of and a higher draft pick. I felt violated in a wonderful way. I’m sure there are a lot of people who feel silly for reporting the eroneous trade. They were slapped. The Bobcats thought they had a deal just to find out they were the decoy. Slapped. And finally the Pacers. I’m sure if Indy knew what we really would have traded for what could be one of the last pieces to our great puzzle they would have difficulty looking at themselves in the mirror for a long time. The master has done it, and if you can’t realize it, maybe you need to give yourself a nice little wanna be P-slap too.

FYI
Westbrook was option #1, but Seattle wanted him. Why? Ultimately it was his workout and his history. Go back and look at their college games, Westbrook ate Bayless for lunch (and they are now still in the same division together).
It was down to DJ and Bayless. They preferred Bayless but expected him to be gone, and the deal was set with Indiana to get DJ so that the Blazers could get in front of Sacramento. Charlotte surprised everyone taking DJ. Because of Pritchard’s smoke screen? Who knows?
When Lopez went to NJ, Pritchard informed Indiana he wanted Bayless. Indiana picked Bayless, but tried to leverage more. I’m not sure if they contacted Sacramento or asked KP for a different player. KP then floated info to Quick about getting DJ. Indiana quit messing around and made the deal. Hence the confusion and misinformation.

Westbrook ate Bayless for lunch?
At UCLA, well yes but the game was a total blowout from the opening tap and it’s not like Bayless sucked (13 pts on 4-9 shooting, and he pretty much going 1 on 5 against UCLA at Pauley)
At Arizona, ummm, no.
I’m not sold on Westbrook, either offensively or his ballhandling. I feel like he’ll be a good pro but wasn’t a #4 pick. Yes I’m a homer but very happy we got Bayless and would be crushed if there was a secret deal to get Westbrook instead.

nope
KP had correctly predicted the mock draft up to and including #15. He knew what was going on.

yes and not sure
handling is good. not sure about the fast break. but really, once he brings it into halfcourt, he’s playing off-ball anyway I think.
Mike Barrett
According to Mike, Bayless was indeed a top target by KP all along, above all the guys that they were rumored to like.
Jarry Bayless Draft Bio...
http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2008&playerId=19137
The caption underneath Bayless’s pic on this page says “Is Bayless the thinking man’s Monta Ellis?”
Chad Ford’s Analysis: Bayless really slid in the draft, which makes him a great value here. Why would the Pacers draft another point guard after trading for T.J. Ford? Because they’re sending Bayless to the Blazers for the No. 13 pick, Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts. So how will Bayless fit with the Blazers? He isn’t the pure point guard that Kevin Pritchard pined for, but he’s an excellent scorer and competitor, and an upgrade over Jack.
Draft Projection: Top 10
Similarities: Gilbert Arenas
Notes:
As a high school senior in 2006-07, averaged 33.2 points, 7.8 rebounds,
6.1 assists and 2.0 steals, and shot 89.1 percent from the free-throw line to help St. Mary’s (Ariz.) to a 19-13 record and state runner-up finish.
Positives: Big-time scoring guard who loves to attack the defense. Excellent athlete with explosive leaping ability. Quick first step allows him to get into the teeth of the defense. Good shooter who gets excellent elevation on his jump shot. Has good floor vision and passing ability.
Negatives: A bit of a tweener. Can play the point, but prefers to score. Can play out of control at times. Poor rebounder. Doesn’t collect steals at a high rate despite his quickness and athleticism.
Summary: Bayless’ combination of elite athleticism, shooting ability and quickness make him an excellent NBA prospect. One scout compared him to a better shooting, more intelligent Monta Ellis, another to Gilbert Arenas. He’s projected in the mid lottery.
