Pre-Draft Talk: Trades Made

As I thought about it, it seemed nicer to split the draft talk on the main page instead of having one, huge, messy thread.  So this thread, open until 4:00 p.m. Pacific today,  is for talk about trades that ACTUALLY HAVE GONE DOWN.  The thread for rumors and draft ideas is right below.

Please keep draft talk in these two threads today to avoid 92 duplicating posts' worth of chaos in the Fanpost sidebar.

As noted to the right...

James Jones failed to exercise his option, and is now a UFA. Link here Discussion in the fanpost on the right.

(No intent, of course, to steal Douglast’s thunder. I am assuming that transactions other than trades, such as decisions on options, are welcome in this thread…)

Indeed,

though there is also a post about this above.

It’s OK though. Discussion today is going to be chaotic and spread over multiple places. We just don’t want it to be chaotic in a way that obliterates every diary in the sidebar.

Indy Toronto Trade

I think this trade opens up an opportunity to get a point guard that we covet, such as DJ Augustin. We might not even have to trade up (via New Jersey) to get him if Bayless falls to Sacremento, as Ford predicted. Indiana needed a point guard badly and TJ Ford fills that void for them. Now they will probably draft a big man to help repalce Jermaine O’Neal.

They may want some insurance

in case Ford stays injury prone though…But it does increase the likelihood and would be niiiiiiiiiice!

and he’s probably virtually untradeable, so he’s basically an insurance policy they are stuck with. They need a big.

Regarding that trade

Apparently, Portland offered both Webster and Frye (and maybe a pick) for a package featuring Ford. Glad that one didn’t happen.

“According to league sources, Portland made an offer that included Channing Frye and Martell Webster. Both of them have contracts that expire at the end of the season but because of Toronto’s long-term salary obligations, they wouldn’t give the Raptors nearly the financial flexibility the O’Neal contract will when it runs out.”

This would allow alexander to fall even more

this could be good for us as Mil was locked into taking Alexander from what I’ve heard

I am thinking we will come out of this draft with 2 of the following:

G:
Bayless/Westbrook/Gordon

and

SF:
Alexander /Rush

Let me get this straight

New Jersey gets a good prospect in Yi, a good bench player (or 2nd rate starter) in Simmons, all the while clearing out 10 million in contracts in time for the summer that I believe LeBron becomes a free agent. All they gave up was an overrated, overpaid athlete who couldn’t coexist with the current team, nor did he fit their window of making a run in the playoffs. I can only hope that the Jay-Z / Bron rumors are fabricated, because it would be a real shame to see him play on a team more talented than Cleveland. What next, is someone going to offer them real talent in exchange for Vince? I respect the Nets for realizing that their team was no good with Kidd, VC and RJ, and just moving on from it.

From the Bucks perspective I don’t understand this trade. They certainly got the best player, but what is he going to lead them to? He is about to be on the decline, and most certainly won’t be a factor when the team would (hypothetically) be making a run in the playoffs.

by TFan on Jun 26, 2008 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

The NJ GM is smart man

And RJ is better than VC at least. So who knows, the Bucks had a gaping hole at small forward, Jefferson will at least be decent. They are in the Leastern conference after all, they should be in the playoffs next year.

So basically if NJ misses out on Lebron in 2010 they are screwed for the next 6 years right?

Boston coach Doc Rivers said he was surprised by the firing of Saunders.
"I don't understand it," Rivers said. "It makes coaching not fun."

Seattle/Clippers trade done

swapped picks. Clippers get #4 and a future pick, Seattle gets #7.

Seattle aiming for Westbrook, and thinking he’ll fall to 7?
Clippers like Bayless maybe?

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 11:45 AM PDT reply actions

actually I think

the Clippers are making a play for Mayo here. They figure Miami HAS to take Beasley, despite the smoke blowing, and that MInnesota will go big with Love or Lopez, leaving Mayo to fall into their lap at #4. That’s gotta be their dream scenario right now.

Would fit

Instead of main LA b-ball school UCLA, goes to USC…

Then instead of the Lakers, goes to Clippers.

Of course, this means Mayo won’t be seen as a ‘winner’ his first few seasons because the Clippers don’t make winners out of nobody. Poor kid.

THE Poobah of Prognostication

by CBASS on Jun 26, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

well, so much for that

If Mayo is available, the deal is off, which means Seattle will take Mayo at 4, leaving who’s left from Love/Lopez at 5 (unless it’s traded).

If the deal does go down, reportedly the Clips will take Gordon at 4. This means Love/Lopez at 5 (unless it’s traded) and the 6 pick is wild card. Seattle will take Lopez at 7 he’s there, otherwise Bayless.

I don’t get this for the Clips. I haven’t seen any scenario where Gordon goes ahead of #7, so why would they move up to 4 to get him? They must be thinking someone is looking to snag the 5 or 6 pick to steal him.

by douglast on Jun 26, 2008 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Heres an updated comment from Chad Ford

The Clippers and Sonics had an agreement in place to swap the No. 4 and No. 7 picks, with the Clippers sending their 2009 pick to Seattle. But disagreements over the details have apparently ended discussions for now.

If they had acquired the No. 4 pick, the Clippers were expected to take Eric Gordon of Indiana, with the Sonics looking at Brook Lopez and Jerryd Bayless at No. 7. But now the deal appears to be off.

Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I wondered if getting that 27th pick (which was pretty much the first draft related trade) didn’t make other GM’s suspect we were up to something, and now they are scrambling to try to outmanuever us. This may or may not have been intentional. Will be interesting to see things unfold.

Hot, Hotter

The Buck-Net trade guarantees the Bucks won’t be taking Alexander at 8. If Alexander is available, the Nets may take him – if they don’t pull the trigger on another deal with either Portland, Memphis, or whatever. Kevin said he’d just had 4 trade deals pour in. Chad Ford now thinks its a solid shot that Augustin could fall to 13. The 7 was swapped for the 4, the Nets are talking about the 10, the Knicks are talking about the 6, Memphis is talking about the 5, and Miami is talking about the 2. And, you can bet Minnesota is also talking about their 3. And Charlotte, having picked up another 1st rounder, while standing pat at 9, is now looking at the 3 players on their board now being gone. Welcome to the draft.

telling comment...

KP said earlier in the week that any player that a team talks up, they’re almost certainly not to draft. And any trade you hear about in the press, almost certainly isn’t going to happen. Of Bayless, Augustin, and Westbrook, Bayless is the only one that hasn’t been linked to the Blazers. Could this mean that that’s who KP is targeting???

by BustABucket25 on Jun 26, 2008 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I just read that too

KP said that everyone is fibbing right now, and so is he. Hmmmmmm…...interesting point about Bayless.

by tmac16550 on Jun 26, 2008 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

How Chad sees it.

Amen. Does make you wonder. But I love it. KP’s a master of misdirection. The Bucks at 8 don’t need a SF now, so Alexander moves to the Nets at 10. Charlotte at 9 doesn’t really want a guard (meaning KP always knew that rumor was a smokescreen), so now they take Randolph if he’s around. The Net’s take Alexander at 10, – or trade down to 5. And, if they do that, Memphis certainly isn’t going to draft a guard at 10 – rather, they want Love or another forward. Seattle at 7 has moved to Lopez, not Bayless. Then, everyone thought Indy would draft a guard at 11. But, if they get Ford, they won’t be doing that either. And that leaves only Sacramento – and up to this point, Bayless, of all people, won’t have been drafted. Voila!! Augustin falls to 13 – unless, KP pulls off one of those trades and moves up

Another announcement that's not a trade

Jonathan Givony is USA in the future.

Still rumors of a Portland/Memphis trade involving Trout, Sergio, #13, and Mike Conley Jr. This rumor didn’t include the #5 pick though…if we had #5 and Conley, who would we draft?

Givony also reporting that Jerrod Bayless might be available at #10, in which case the possible Nets/Blazers swap would go down so that the Blazers could draft him.

by EngineerScotty on Jun 26, 2008 2:27 PM PDT reply actions

That got mangled, try again.

Givony is reporting that LMA is on the USA Select Team, which will practice against Team USA in preparation for the Olympics. BRoy was invited to join but declined so he could rest and finish his UW degree; though he may be involved in the future. The Select team is a gateway to Team USA.
