James Jones Out
95.5 just reported James did not exercise his option for 08/09. He is now an unrestricted free agent
I think this means he's gone. We would have liked him to stay one more year, see if his knee hold up, and then look at it again next summer.
Given our roster depth, the summer 2009 possibilities, and questions about his knee, I don't see us signing him to a multi-year contract.
The only scenario where we resign him is if we made a trade or trades that see us getting rid of Martel or Outlaw and not bringing back any other SFs in the draft or via trade. Even then, we could look to pick up another veteran FA rather than Jones.
This also helps P.Ko potentially nab a spot on the 15 man roster, assuming he earns it in summer league.

He is if the blazers
are willing to snag JJ33 back. He DOES want to play here after all.

no surprise here
I love me some James Jones, but the reality is we don’t have room for him.

Best of luck to you James
You are quite a player, and one day, I wouldn’t mind seeing you back here.

How much interest
We will now see if other team’s think that knee is a real concern by how much money and year’s he get’s. If he dosen’t get what he think’s are fair value maybe we might resign him for a 1 year deal.(not Likely)

I think some guys...
would really rather be NBA mercenaries; just playing basketball and making money, the way we all treat our jobs. They don’t care if they get transferred to Milwaukee or Indiana or wherever if it means a step up along the career ladder. James Jones may be one of those guys.

Im pretty sure he wanted a long term contract somewhere so he could settle down w/ his family
Apparantly he has 2 young kids and a wife. So i can understand his want to stay put somewhere.

Well technically if you get payed even 1 million dollars, once
You and your family will be just fine forever. I hear this argument a lot, and even though I understand that people are always going to want more money, it’s BS to say that they need to try to get more for their family. One or two million dollars will set you up for life just fine, if you want a normal lifestyle instead of a ridiculous lifestyle.

I'm glad
I hardly ever heard his name in trade rumors so that means his trade value wasn’t worth anything. We don’t need players with low trade value.

This is good
Taking his injury concerns in to account, and that he was sort of a spot minute guy when Martell or Outlaw were hurt/not playing well, I don’t think JJ33 is that big a loss. It was nice to have some defensive know how, but he wasn’t any older than Blake. He was important for last year, but I don’t think his importance would have continued in to next year. The open roster spot and freed up cash is more important to the Blazers at this point.
by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2008 9:06 AM PDT 0 recs
This is too bad
There is a rumor out as well that another team has made Jones a promise, and that is why he opted out. It would be tampering, but it happens all the time.

James just had his best season so far and hasn't had a big contract yet
this might be his last chance at a 3-4 year deal. I don’t blame him. Good luck to JJ33!

Another steady Blazer goes the way of Ime.
This is what comes of having so many promising young wings. The steady, Veteran ones are expendable.
Look for Travis to fill in the 3 position, Martell to get traded, and the Blazers to acquire their backup 3 as part of some draft day dealing later today.
Wherever you go, there you are.

We shall see.
I have been wrong before. Multiple times, even.
But Martell is drawing a lot of interest. Travis is going exclusivly to 3 (per the PTB)... And we need a shooter at this position to back-up Travis.
Perhaps this revives the Mike Miller talk? Now that Jones is gone, he’d be a much bigger add than before.

You need
a consistent outside shooter to open up the floor. Hopefully, Martell stays and becomes that shooter.

I don't mind
when he was good he was great. But when he was injured and still playing, which was a lot near the end, he was a big black hole out there.
by Section323 on Jun 26, 2008 9:40 AM PDT 0 recs
I agree
with Majikjon’s last comment.
The toughest thing IMO of losing Jones is his leadership. Even as he was injured, he continued to be a leader from the sidelines. I’m sure Coach sees this, and I’m assuming that role will need to be filled. Yes we have some natural leaders on our team, but who will fill that veteran void… another veteran??

backup SF
If Martell or Travis are dealt, who’s the backup SF? A couple of ideas
3 guard lineup with Roy at SF, Rudy at 2 and Blake (or new PG, Harris, etc)
KP drafts a backup SF
Jones doesn’t get the offer he’s looking for elsewhere and resign with Portland
McBob comes alive and claims those minutes

No Concern
We can always re-sign him. But keep in mind, this is a two way street. It’s pretty clear that Jones was looking for an indication from management that he could stay and play, and management didn’t want to commit beyond that final year for now. We can’t blame KP, but we also can’t blame Jones. He’s always been upfront about “wanting to be wanted”. However, as most of the blogs constantly reinforce, with Oden, we have Travis and Webster at SF now, whereas last year Travis was playing both SF and PF. There were never going to be a lot of minutes for Jones. Further, Jones had a higher salary than you’d normally want to dole out for a third SF playing 6 – 8 minutes or so.
Also, keep in mind that if you read Oregon Live today, you’ll see KP confirm that he had a “good deal” on the table from an Eastern Conference team for a straight up trade of Outlaw for a starting PG- but he didn’t pull the trigger. KP obviously values Outlaw, and isn’t going to just dump him. Further, other comments clearly bring into question the idea of whether or not he ever actually offered Webster for Barbosa. In fact, the word now is that Phoenix never did get much return on their attempt to move Barbosa and Diaw – making me wonder how much of the debate was smoke – not fire. If KP pulls a trade to move up, it’s almost a sure bet that it will be for one player, and the only other player on our end involved will be the one he replaces. i.e If we target and get a PG, then you might move Jack. Or, if you target and get a “Very Good” SF, then you might trade Webster. But there’s only a handful of players in this draft where we’d likely see this. Many of you were always right in one sense, and that is that KP isn’t just going to sell the farm unless he’s absolutely certain it improves the team. He doesn’t need to.
As far as the Net/Blazer deal of their 10 for our 13 and Jack with Augustin our target. I’d also bet that that trade will only happen after we see who Charlotte takes at 9. And that’s true of both the Nets and Us. If the players the Nets want are off the board – then they’d likely make the trade. If the player we want is off the board – then we probably wouldn’t. And so forth.

You are absolutely right
on all points, and particularly the Net/Blazer deal.
Even if the guy we want is still on the table, we might not pull the trigger. It might depend on who else is left—if the right guys are left, KP might figure our guy will last to #13.
Possible exception—if the #10 is really only part of another deal for a higher pick. Then, it might happen earlier.

if it happens earlier, it's a trade piece
if we are picking at 10, the trade won’t get made until after #9. If we get the pick before that, it’s because we are trading it.

Actually
If we pick at 10, the trade almost certainly won’t be made until after we pick at 13. NJ would pick for us, and we would pick for them, so as to leave both teams the flexibility to trade their first rounder next year.

Interesting days
He still may be back if Martell or Travis are traded. IMO, this reduces the chances of either of them being traded.
I’m very surprised, actually. Because of the injuries, I didn’t think he’d take this risk.
I won’t be surprised to see him end up with a contender who needs outside shooting. The Spurs are getting old, he might give them a real lift if he’s healthy.
This also increases the chances of Rudy or Roy playing a few minutes at the 3 from time to time. Minutes congestion is less of an issue, now.
We’ll still see some deals today or on July 1. But maybe not big deals—it just got harder for us to trade away a forward.
This also increases the chances of Martell being extended.

I see Rudy as a 3, not a 2.
PG + Roy + Rudy + LMA + Oden.
If either Marty or Travis are moved, you can bet this is right.

Now that we have Bayless
I can see us using a lineup with Roy, Rudy, and Bayless together. Roy would do most of the playmaking in the half-court, while Rudy and Bayless play off the ball and shoot 3s. However, on defense Bayless should guard the opposing PG (he is the shortest), Rudy should guard the opposing SG, and Roy should guard the opposing SF (he is stronger than Rudy). I think a Bayless/Rudy/Roy/LMA/Oden lineup would be descent on defense and unstoppable on offense.
Remember what KP said we needed to complement out big 3: quickness and shooting. Bayless and Rudy are both excellent shooters who are very quick.

Rudy is too lightweight
to play forward.
He’d have to bulk up considerably. We might go small for short periods, but not regularly. Roy is more of a 3 than Rudy.

Sad to see JJ33 go
He was a big part pf the Blazer’s success last year.
On the other hand, this does reduce roster congestion and free up more time for other players. There should be less pressure to trade away players now than there would be if Jones had used his player option.
