Overrated/ Underrated

I was just wondering who you guys thought were being overrated or underrated in this draft. Here's my top 5 for each one:

Overrated:

1. Kevin Love

Will be a solid NBA player but a top 5 pick in a draft this deep? I don't think so. Non-athletic big man aren't exactly the new trend in the NBA. Awesome passer, but not good enough for a top 5 pick.

2. Eric Gordon

Love the kid's game, but his ball handling skills are worse than shaq's... and at 6'3" he can't really play shooting guard... reminds me of a stronger jason terry... inconsistent in the second half of the season too

3. JaVale McGee

Have you seen the kid play?! Sure he's long and athletic, but he has absolutely no post skills, and he's as skinny as they come! I'm seeing a Mark Blount sorta guy here... without the mid range game..

4. Robin Lopez

For a guy who's supposed to be a rebounder, five boards a game against college competition doesn't exactly cut it for me. No offensive skills at all, and yet he's been projected to go as high as 10.

5. Danilo Gallinari

Good passer, but not athletic enough for the new small forward prototype. international prospects have been overrated lately, no difference here.

Underrated:

1. Darrell Arthur

Good mid range shot, super athletic, reminds me of a younger Amare Stoudemire

2. Marreese Speights

Has range all the way out to the NBA 3, a variety of post up moves, and great size and length. reminds me of Al Jefferson.

3. Courtney Lee

Some project him to slip in the seocnd round, i say he goes 22nd to Orlando. The most complete wing player in this draft, he can shoot, he can slash, and he can defend.

4. Nicholas Batum

Unlike most international prospects, Batum is freakishly athletic and has a huge wingspan. Prototypical small forward in my mind.

5. DJ White

Love this kid! amazing work ethic and motor. Great rebounder. A variety of post moves. The only knock on him is his height.

Don't forget about Chris Douglas Roberts...

I think at around 18, he’s gonna be the steal of the draft…from what i saw in the tourney, he was more important to memphis than derrick rose

No disrespect, i'd also lump Derrick Rose into the overrated category

the dude scored two points one year in his high school state finals, and his team lost. Doesn’t sound like the type of leader everyone is hyping him to be

Malik Hairston

Not just because he’s a Duck. His numbers show if guys like Brandon Rush deserve to be in the top 20 theres no reason he shouldn’t. He’s probably more NBA ready too.

by Bskey on Jun 24, 2008 9:14 PM PDT reply actions

no thanks

Malik is a classic tweener. He’s got the body of a guard but is most effective inside.

Guess I should have been more clear

I didn’t actually mean Malik should be top 20, I meant if Brandon Rush is I don’t see why Malik isn’t as well. Rush is the same size, just 10 pounds heavier (nothing that can’t be changed) and they put up extremely similar stats. I guess it could be that Rush is overrated more than Malik is underrated.

by Bskey on Jun 24, 2008 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

similar stats

similar builds

totally different games. Rush’s game projects much better to the pros IMO. Also, he can shoot FTs.

Yes they play differently but

I would say Malik is better at team offense and 1 on 1 defense at this point, while Rush is better at 1 on 1 offense and team defense.

Neither of them shine at defense and Rush will probably have a higher ceiling but it’s important to keep in mind that Malik is about a year and a half younger while having 1 more year experience and Rush is coming off an injury and slowed down a bit.

Rush will be better but I don’t see him being better enough to warrant the much higher pick he’ll go at. I think Malik would be a better fit for some teams.

Anyway my whole point isn’t to harp on Rush, I like him, but that Malik is being pretty underrated.

Malik Hairston and Maarty Leunen

are both pretty good. They should be solid picks for whoever takes them in the 2nd round. It’s too bad that the rest of the Ducks’ players were so terrible, if they had a couple more players like Hairston and Leunen they could have been a contender.

Luenen

I think it’s fair to say he’s underrated, since it doesn’t look like he’ll even be drafted.

by PoliSam on Jun 24, 2008 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

he WAS overrated

but now so many people have realized that and called him overrated that I think he’s now just rated.

agree ....Nicholas Batum

because of the false health issues…. has dropped to bargain level range.

Just the right position to trade up a high second pick and take.

you have the Lopez twins mixed up

Brook is looking to be the higher pick although Robin is now in the Green room

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

maybe i have it backwards

sorry. Although I have not seen Robin listed as going 10 anywhere

some rumors that if gallinari, brook lopez, and alexander were off the board they would seriously look at robin lopez. crazy eh?

This is kinda funny,

some GM as saying that there are no impact players as this is a supposedly “weak” draft, good depth but not a lot of impact players in the top 10, much like the 2006 draft was not considered very good, and in fact sans our guys, Gay and Rondo there are no “stars” in the league. “Bust”ani? Ammo? Tyrus? Shelden? all pretty crappy players.

Now my view of the matter may be skewed due to KP, but much like 2006, instead of trading down and out for a vet, I find it better to attack to make sure that you can get the player that you want and negate having to pick BPA. Attack the draft and trust on all of the work and analysis you have busted your ass doing for the previous year, to make sure that you get those gems.

To me it is a bit sad that some GMs would rather trade down or out just because this is a “weak” draft after the top 3 or so.

I am so glad we have the smartest young GM, and the best and richest owner in all of pro sports.

by SpyderRyder on Jun 25, 2008 12:43 AM PDT reply actions

KP is awesome

but it looks like Presti and that dude in Houston are no slouches either. Finally the league is getting some new blood and fresh ideas at the GM spot. I get that people like Kiki V., but how did that guy land a second job.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

Off the top of my head... (where all the hot air ideas collect)

Overrated

Westbrook
Gordon
Anthony Randolph
Alexis Ajinca
both Lopez’s

Underrated

DJ Augustin
M Speights
Mario Chalmers
Roy Hibbert

Several weeks ago I was not exactly on board the Kevin Love train. I recall saying I would rather take Tyler Hansbourogh. Well Hans is out and it’s looking like I may have to acknowledge all the Love supporters as being better evaluators of talent than I. At this point, I wouldn’t claim he’s overrated. It is starting to sound like he’s the second best big man in the draft.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
