Travis Outlaw Trade Wager (Gentlemans bet)

Ive been a huge Outlaw fan since he got drafted. It wasnt so much his freaky level of athleticism, or his rubber band like defensive skills, or his ability to leap over tall buildings. I just like Travis. Sometimes statistics dont tell the entire tale of a players ability or value. Isnt what makes Travis special is that he is so down to earth and good natured that in a world of seamy and selfishness, Travis emerges above it all?  Any trade involving Travis would never recompense the loss of such genuineship.  If that's debatable, not by anyone who grew up with the PTB philosophy of character and talent over talent alone.

Im willing to go so far as to wager against anyone who thinks Travis Outlaw is going to be included in any trade.  Travis will not be traded. Anyone who takes the bet can say I told you so, but not unless you take the bet and explain why.

Fair enough?

I voted for trade him, but I dont think he is overrated

I just think we need him to get something greater because of his perceived value.

The Reason:
Life isn’t fair

One of the things that some people

do not realize is this:

Q: Who is the longest tenured Blazer?

A: Travis-5 years

Joel is 2nd with 4 years of duty

I dont know how much meaining that puts on Travis, hell probably none at all for some here, but to me, it seems that since he has been here for the majority of crap that has transpired the past 5 years, he should taste the rewards of what this team is going to become.

I guess I am a little sentimental to him in that respect but I just dont think that a lot of fans realize that no other Blazers has worn the uniform longer than Travis has.

Life is a box of chocolates

And this also goes for Travis. You never quite know what you are going to get. But it’s most likely going to be oh so sweet. No doubt he is fast becoming one of my all time favorites.

Hey Bow, Wow you hit it spot on when you said

” what makesTravis special is that he is so down to earth and good natured that in a world of seamy and selfishness, Travis emerges above it all? Any trade involving Travis would never recompense the loss of such genuineship.”

Well said. B Roy obviously feels the same.

I voted "core player" but ...

it’s just more wishful thinking, I’m afraid.

You might have stipulated some time constraints, though. Consider that even the Glide was eventually traded. How many players actually retire with their original club?

I’m getting very gloomy as this Draft Thursday looms ahead.

time restraints

I thought about it. But I wanted to limit to speculation to the immediate future. Sure anything can and probly will happen down the road when things change again, but for now, thats my universe.

I'd bet insane odds

Travis says. He’s Brandon Roy’s best friend on the team, he’s clutch, he’s a fan favorite, and he still has upside. If Pritchard will draft Oden’s friend McBob, how much more is he going to keep Roy’s friend Travis around? Go ahead, tell me it’s a business, but trust me, Travis is not going anywhere.

Oh it's a business all right

Keeping King Roy happy is good for Business.

It's a business

but how many times does the bosses friend, or friend of a current favorite employee get the nod. You judge folks by friends, and if they’re good, they’re friends are. It’s probably a silly inference, but it happens a lot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But, that sort of thinking is extremely common in business. In this case, I love it because I love Travis.

I don't know if he will be traded.

But if he is, it won’t be because we don’t think he’s a good enough player. It will be because everyone thinks he is a good player, and therefore valuable, but that we can afford to lose him for the right deal.

Ppeople seem to get the idea that you only trade the players who you don’t like. But sometimes you trade players that you like a lot, in order to get something even better.

so if Travis doesnt get drafted

its because either there’s not a good enough deal for him or he’s perceived as too valuable a member of the roster. I can live w that

Sorry, I can't buy it

It all depends.

I hope you are right. But if the exact right guy that KP wants is available, and the other team insists Travis is part of the price, this could happen.

Would anyone refuse to trade Travis for C. Paul or D. Williams? (Well, anyone besides Annthefan?)

Travis is not untouchable. He just isn’t. His upside, his attitude, his athleticism, his great contract, are all extremely valuable—and extremely attractive to other teams as well. Attractive enough that they may pay a high price to get him, and perhaps the price that KP believes puts us over the top.

I don’t expect Travis to be traded. I don’t want Travis to be traded. But it doesn’t make sense to say he absolutely won’t be.

I agree with jscot

It’s not that Outlaw isn’t a great player. It’s not that he isn’t a BF of Roy. It’s simply that, even though he has played PF, he is really a SF. With the addition of Oden, he moves players to their natural positions. With the depth they now have at PF and C Travis moves to the SF where Webster/Jones play. Even if Jones opts out (which I think he will unless there is a trade) that still leaves minutes to be distributed to Outlaw, Webster, Rudy, possible draftpick. You could even include Roy there. I could very easily see PG Blake, SG Rudy and Roy playing SF to get more minutes for Rudy. So if you have a logjam like this, someone usually gets traded to bring value to the weakest areas. Now whether that is Webster or Outlaw I don’t know. I do know that it won’t be Roy or Rudy. With the value in the league focused on what Outlaw did last year, I would think he would bring the most value to another team. The Blazers can find his points, rebounds and blocked shots. I even think that the opportunity for game winners will decrease with the additions making the Blazers an overall better team. Also, with the improvement of Webster and the addition of Rudy and bringing Oden in it gives them some of the basketball intangibles that Outlaw or Webster bring. If you look at the value of the other PG’s, even if we traded Jack, Sergio and Blake, it would not be enought to get us the PG of the future. IMO I believe Outlaw has the value to do this.
