Trade Prediction: Tinsley to Portland for the 13th Pick
This trade is not a joke, it is going to happen, and you're hearing it here first. The Portland TrailBlazers are going to trade the 13th overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft to the Indiana Pacers for veteran point guard Jamaal Tinsley.
Why?
Read on and I will give you seven reasons why this trade is going to occur and if you don't believe me, leave a comment, and I will gladly get back to you with an "I told you so" on the mourning of June 27th, 2008.
Seven Reasons Why Portland is Going to Trade the 13th Pick of the First Round in the 2008 NBA Draft to Indiana for veteran PG Jamaal Tinsley:
1. The Blazers worked out one first round prospect for 2 weeks during their pre-draft prospect workouts. Who was that player? The same player ever single mock draft on this planet has had the Pacers slated at selecting for months, D.J. Augustin. Why would the Blazers do this, to build up Augustin's value to the team they're hoping to get a veteran PG from, the Pacers. Just look at this article written up in The Oregonian, Augustin gives the Blazers another talking point, about how much the Blazers coaching staff and management "love" Augustin. In first reading the article I thought geez there is a legit possibility the Blazers might trade with us so they can take Augustin, but what on earth would they ever offer the Pacers that would entice them to do so? The only thing I can think of is Martell Webster, their 6th overall pick of the 2005 Draft, but honestly I don't see them trading their highly touted 21 year old SF to Indiana to trade up for D.J., nor do I see the Pacers interested in another SF, that leaves me with the conclusion that they're doing everything possible to entice the Pacers into selecting Augustin, ultimately setting Portland up to trading their 1st (13th overall) round pick for Tinsley just moments later.
Blazers GM said this in reference to Augustin, "I think this kid is born to be a point guard," Pritchard said.
2. The Blazers have stated numerous times that they want to trade out of the first round and have no interest in getting a so so young player with the 13th pick with the abundance of young talented players they already have on their team (Roy, Aldridge, Webster, Oden, etc.)
http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf?/base/sports/1210906542273010.xml&coll=7
Blazers beat writer said this in reference to the draft, "Portland needs to trade its 2008 draft pick... It's in General Manager Kevin Pritchard's nature to be active. This is a guy who tied the NBA record for trades in a single day (six) during his first few months on the job. And so now he's charged with getting rid of what will probably be a marginal pick in the first round." said the Oregonians Canzano.
3. The Blazers can afford Tinsley and by the time his contract is up the Trail Blazers will be reading the sign all of their young talent to long term deals. In recently waiving the constantly injured Darius Miles, severing ties with the over paid swingman has given Portland some cap space. In doing so taking on Tinsley's contract wouldn't be a big deal at all for a team who has had some of the best drafts in the NBA the past 3-4 seasons, not to mention some of the best luck. With their experience they had with Miles, Tinsley health issues are small potatoes, especially since he always returned to the Pacers lineup at seasons end. In the end the Blazer's luck and good drafts have given them to luxury to take a chance on Tinsley, it is the type of risk that wins championships.
http://www.nba.com/blazers/news/Trail_Blazers_request_waivers_-267482-1218.html
4. Adding Tinsley will give Portland a veteran presence who can distribute the basketball to all of their young players. Last year when Tinsley was healthy for a good portion of the first third of the regular season, he was averaging over 8 assists per game. There is no way Blake or Jack will be able to amount to that type of pass first production and with Oden healthy, Roy coming off two amazing seasons, and Aldridge and Webster looking for breakout seasons, a court general and distributor is exactly what their team lacks and is precisely what Portland is looking at add. Keeping in mind Tinsley played a much smaller amount of games, but in the 2007 season the Blazer's current starting PG Steve Blake averaged 8.5 points, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds a game in comparison to Jamaal Tinsley's 12 points, 8.5 assists, and 4 rebounds.
5. On the chance that Tinsley gets injured again the Blazers won't be losing out on their entire season. In having Blake and Jarrett Jack the Blazers have two legitimate top notch backups, some might call them starters but most would disagree. With that, on the chance Tinsley stays healthy, the Blazers could be one of the best teams in the NBA.
6. Once the Blazers have Tinsley, they can look to draft a PG in the future that they can groom to grow under Tinsley for 2 years, and when Tinsleys contract is up and they're in the process of signing all of their talent long term, their PG they have been grooming should be ready to step in and the team will sever all ties with Tinsley at that point, but until then they would love to have him! Drafting a top 15 PG is just not in their best interest because it would be extremely difficult to keep all those highly drafted prospects when their rookie contracts start coming to an end, so taking one next year or the year after would be a far smarter move for the team.
7. Portland is ready to win NOW, unless you have a situation like Boston's with three perennial All-Stars you can't put all your marbles in on a young PG leading your team, especially a rookie PG. Rondo was going into his second year, so you can't compare his situation to Augustin possibly leading Portland, especially knowing Portland is already built on young talent, they need veterans somewhere, ding ding ding, Jamal Tinsley, because as I said they also need a point guard, since they have Blake and Jack, what they really need is a veteran point guard, and I am pretty sure the 13th pick isn't getting they Chauncey Billups.
Yahoo! Sports, Portland TrailBlazer's Team Needs:
Needs: Point guard, point guard, point guard. Jarrett Jack, Steve Blake, and Sergio Rodriguez are all serviceable, but they are easily the weakest link in what will become the NBA’s youngest and most talented roster once LaFrentz rocks off next summer. Otherwise, the team is stocked, talented, and under 28 at center, both forward spots, and shooting guard.
ESPN.com Chad Ford, Draft Notes: Which teams might deal their pick?
(Who was up at the top of the list? You guessed it, Portland!)
Portland Trail Blazers: From what I can gather, using the No. 13 pick is a last resort for the Blazers. They have plenty of young players and actually will look to package their first-round pick and a few of their young players to get a veteran point guard or small forward. They too could be in the hunt for Ford or Hinrich.
They have a lot of other assets they could include in a trade, including Jarrett Jack, Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw, Channing Frye and Sergio Rodriguez.
The flip side for Portland? If they keep all of their young players for another year, they could have significant cap room next summer. In other words, it will have to be a good deal for the Blazers to pull the trigger.
---
Who will the Pacers take with the 13th overall pick, after selecting Augustin with the 11th?
Simple, two words, "Big man", "Post presence", and an "Upside player"! I'm praying for Anthony Randolph, but don't be surprised if they take Kosta Koufos, DeAndre Jordan, or even Brandon Rush, I just pray Roy Hibbert isn't on their minds.
(Possible tweaks to the trade, the Pacers could throw in their 2nd round pick, the 41st overall selection of the 2008 Draft, or even their 2nd round selection of 2007 Stanko Barac who is currently playing in the Euroleague)

he's not a good shooter either
38.0% from the field, 28.4% from 3, 72.0% from the line, and averaged 3.3 turnovers a game. He has a history of off court issues. He’ll also be 31 by the end of next season, so if 2010-2011 is our first year in contention, we’ll have a 33 year old point guard that can’t shoot or stay out of trouble. So he doesn’t fit AT ALL with what Kevin Pritchard is trying to build.

Left hit it right on the head
KP has just spent the better part of the last 3 years trying get rid of Jamal Tinsley-like players. I rather doubt that he would even think about pulling the trigger on this deal.

I appreciate how much work you put in.
But this has zero chance of happening…
Tinsley is not a fit in our culture. Tinsley is not a fit in our system. Tinsley is not a fit in our age curve.
If we wanted someone in the mold of the faster PG, it would be Augustin, who can shoot, pass, and is a good character guy.

Blazers, Blazers, Blazers
Which is why the Pacers would throw in a 2nd round pick, and possibly swap one of our veterans like Jeff Foster for one of your expendable young talented players, like maybe the Pacers would take Blake and his 4.5 million dollar contract off the Blazers hands, or Joe Przybilla and his 6.5 million.
The way I set up the trade isn’t final, but there is a strong chance of it happening. For instance here is another option
Pacers Trade:
Jamaal Tinsley 6.5 million
Jeff Foster 5.5 million
Blazers Trade:
Raef Lafraentz, 12.4 million
13th overall pick
Or could the Blazers be interested in Troy Murphy’s 10 million dollar contract, haha, I didn’t think so but seriously there is a strong chance of this happening, don’t be surprised when it happens. The Pacers also have the highly touted Ike Diogu who is a coveted young Power Forward prospect, he doesn’t fit with the Pacers new system and style of play under Jim O’Brien so if the Blazers would want him thats another route the trade could go…

No thank you
We currently have three 2nd round picks now. Don’t need another. However we will be happy to trade you all three of our 2nd rounders for Danny Grainger.

Pacer Fan perhaps?
Maybe this trade proposal will more popular on Pacer fan board. I understand that one team’s junk can be another team’s treasure, but let me assure you…....Jamal Tinsley is no treasure for the Blazers. Maybe the Knicks, Clippers or Cavs perhaps?

and to the last post, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET DJ AUGUSTIN, AND THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL YOU WILL GET HIM AT 13, IF BY THE CHANCE OF HELL FREEZING OVER THE PACERS PASS ON HIM, THE KINGS SURE AS HELL ARENT EITHER!
If the Blazers want the 11 pick, they better give Indiana the 13th pick, and their first round pick next year in the 2009 draft

Whoa man
People here are a little nice than at your normal blog. Try to take it easy and be nice.
As to your points: You’re absolutely spot on about Portland REALLY REALLY REALLY wanting a good point guard.
But, if you’re not too familiar with what’s been happening in Portland, there’re a few issues that make this trade very unlikely.
1) He’s not a character guy. Our GM Kevin Pritchard will not sign or trade for anyone with a modicum of character issues. He’s spent his tenure here putting a team together based on chemistry and the ability to get along with one another. ANY OFF COURT PROBLEMS will preclude a trade.
2) Timeline: You’ll see folks around here talk about our timeline continuously. Blazer management’s done a great job of delaying expectations. Very few fans are pushing to win next year. We’re thinking (maybe we’re wrong) that we have a ten year window starting after this year, maybe the one after that. Any major pieces that doesn’t fit that window isn’t popular with management. That said, using a vet to groom some potential is a good idea. I like your idea on that, but Tinsley is not the vet I’d want grooming a future PG. Our average age is 24.
3) Chemistry: It sort of relates to point one, but what I mean to emphasize is the incredible chemistry the Blazers demonstrated last year. Easily, and by far, the Blazers connected more than any other team. Would a guy like Tinsley want to go to all the team dinners with people 10 years younger than him?
Those are just a few reasons why Tinsley probably wouldn’t be a great player for the Blazers. I cannot fathom the idea that Pritchard is interested in him based on what we know about his management style.
If we’re just taking his contract to get at some other player and then buying him out, I could see it happen (like the way we got rid of Francis). If we get Indiana’s pick, it might help, but it’s only 11. Could two spots help us enough? I don’t know, but it would have to for this trade to happen. It could also happen as a re-trade sort of thing. But, the likelihood of Tinsley playing in Black and Red next year is near zero.
One other thing, it looks like you’re a pacers fan, new here. Maybe it’s better to ask for persepctive from some of the guys who’ve been watching the blazers so closely rather than telling them how it’s going to happen. I’d bet that a few readers really think this is not going to happen. If you ask them why, they’ll give you some pretty good perspective on Blazers team stuff. For the record, I’m not one of those people. You may get them to respond. Many of us even suspect that Kevin Pritchard himself posts regularly on here. Watch for him.

We can do much better then 11
If the blazers wanted to trade up we would attempt try to do much better then 11, to get a chance at a top prospect PG in this draft you will probally need to be in the top ten range at least.

Why, they obviously are in “love” with Dj Augustin, and he is projected at 11 or 12, Blazers just miss out on the last blue chip PG picking at 13, thats why…

Still think there is a good chance of something happening between the Pacers and Blazers, can we at least leave it at that? Dont know what but something is surely brewing, we want to to get more picks in the 1st round, you want out of the first round, we want to get rid of a veteran PG, you want to add a veteran PG, you guys are keeping our likely drafted prospect in Portland for 2 weeks, and I ask why….. pretty exciting….

Now that I've read your entire post ...
I believe even more firmly there’s no way this is going to happen. Not one of your points makes much sense to me. But then I realized that you’re actually an Indiana fan, so that’s forgivable. The one thing you much realize here is that our new management will simply not bring on players who have off-court issues. Multiple gun charges = a big giant sign around Tinsley’s neck which says: “Never going to be a Trail Blazer ever.”

Hope you check back BB
Other posters have covered most of the problems with the trade: character, timeline, chemistry etc.
I just wanted to point out that Canzano is not really the best source on Blazer predictions. It is his opinion the Blazers have a desire to move the pick and not add any young talent but KP and Nate have both expressed that adding a young guy is not the worst thing that can happen. They would like to add veteran guys to provide some leadership but if the right guys are not available or are too costly they will draft the BPA and proceed from there. Tinsley does not fit their idea of veteran leadership and that is why we won’t see this trade on June 26th.
I was also wondering if you were going to be mourning on the morning of the 27th if this trade does not occur?

See ya Later, BB
I agree with all of those on the red and black side. Several other weaknesses are 1) the idea that we can draft a PG later (how are we going to that given this is the last lottery pick we’ll probably see for 10 years?), and 2) Why would we trade LaFrentz now and lose that cap space if it didn’t give us a solid permanent, as opposed to short term player? If we can’t get a solid player this year, then the pieces we get this year, the players we already have, and that cap space will be critical next year to add a starting vet.
I would also note that the “over-reaction” in which he stated “we’d never get Augustin” seems to me to indicate that he really wants the guy badly, and is hoping and praying that KP doesn’t move out and take him away.
Also, the writing spelled “morning”, as “mourning”. Seems to me that if he loses Augustin that the speliing will be entirely appropriate to his mood at that time.

A lot of work, but the wrong conclusion.
Blazer fans here have been falling all over themselves trying to trade for any breathing point guard on any roster, and have been willing to give away half the team for a decent one. Yet no one, no one has suggested Jamaal Tinsley as a possibility. I can’t think of anyone that desperate for a PG. Tinsley is a train wreck, and no one wants to touch him with a 3.048 meter pole.
Augustine would fit us pretty well, except many fans have a fear of short point guards after Damon Stoudemire got owned on defense as a direct result of his shortness. Chalmers might be an interesting player to take a flyer on with Orlando’s pick though. Sure, he’s not as good as Augustine, but he did win a National Championship and all.
Personally, I think next year is Jack’s year to take his spot. But I’m in the minority on that one.

I would disagree on one point...
Damon Stoudemire didn’t get burned on D because he was short, he got burned because he didn’t move his feet, was lazy, didn’t really care about defense and doesn’t seem to be the smartest egg in the dozen.
As he’s from stumptown and was a long time Blazer and is my weed connection I hate to dis him but I have to if I”m going to be honest.

Let's give Brent Jonathan Beck credit
He posted on another team’s page, which is always a bit dicey.
He manned-up and signed his own name (at least I assume it’s his) instead of lobbing his fantasy trade grenades behind a psuedonym like MiledAnimal. (Hey, I have to do that. I don’t want Paul to know it’s me.)
He loves his team so much that he really believes that other teams would give up their gold for his team’s dross. That’s one definition of a true fan.
He’s not only not afraid to make a prediction only a homer could love, he has convinced himself it really will happen.
Points off for the all caps (I really hate that, it reminds me of a few nasty drunks I’ve known) and for thinking that I’m—I mean, KP, is a moron.
