Workout Schedule Released
Our man Casey Holdahl has the scoop on the workout schedule for potential Blazer draft picks here.
Most of the expected names are there. It's an interesting look at some second-round potential too.

My thoughts:
-Interesting that DJ Augustine gets a whole day by himself.
-Interesting that there are four Kansas guys on there but no Mario Chalmers.
-If this is a representation of who we may pick, it seems we are not looking to move up that far in the draft.
The problem is,
those guys higher up aren’t likely to work out for us at all. In their minds, why would they? They’ll be gone before #13, so why risk an injury?

Same thing happened last year
Last draft season, despite all the rumors about the Blazers trying to get another pick in the 1st round, especially the mid to late lottery, they couldn’t get any players expected to be drafted around there to work out for them because it wasn’t a sure thing that the Blazers could get another pick. Those guys travel all over, obviously, and the constant workouts are very tiring, so to squeeze in the Blazers when getting another lottery pick isn’t very likely wouldn’t make much sense on their end. There isn’t enough of a benefit to work out for the Blazers when there are people you KNOW have a pick in your expected range.
That’s how the players and agents supposedly see it, anyways.
Unless a deal was already worked out and the Blazers kinda hinted at the deal having been worked out to a player’s agent, so that the player’s agent schedules a workout for the Blazers even though their client is expected to be long gone by #13. If suddenly OJ Mayo or that Bayless fellow shows up in Tualatin and is looking for a new house, we might have a deal in place for a draft day splash.
It’ll be fun having all these good players come in, and very interesting since we could go a million different directions with this pick.

Yeah
I didn’t really think about that.
What about Augustine getting a whole day? That must mean KP wants to take a long look at him right?
Could be
Or it could be a scheduling coincidence, OR Augustine’s agent won’t allow him to go up against fellow players in the draft. Those silly agents do that sometimes, and I don’t think it ever helps a player’s stock.
There’s still time to add someone to the same day, but yeah, it’s curious as to why he gets a day all alone…
I’m going to guess that it COULD mean something, but likely not. I can’t really say for sure, but Augustine isn’t so much better/more intriguing than any of the other potential #13s, is he? Enough to warrant being all by himself? I don’t know enough about his game to guess; all I know is he is shorter than I like.

No, there's a secret reason
You see, 6-18 is my birthday, and I suspect the Blazers’ brass wanted to clear their schedule to throw a surprise birthday party for me. No, I haven’t actually met KP et al. But I’ve been sending KP valuable information psychically for a couple years now, and I’m sure he credits me with many of his excellent moves. Never mind that I wanted him to “Draft the Stash.” I’m sure my input is greatly valued.

A whole bunch of Frenchmen
Interesting.
I was looking for Maarty Leunen’s name as he seems to have done well in Orlando
Leunen was all over the place, setting screens, grabbing rebounds and knocking down open shots. He’s the perfect player for this type of camp, in that he doesn’t need plays called for him in order to be effective. It’s definitely not a stretch to see him get a chance to make the league as a role player.and we usually look at some locals.
Guaging progress against NCAA talent
French coaching seems to be improving…. but how much?
Notice that Batum was in the final bunch. Batman will audition for other teams and gain added experience. The Blazer evaluators will be able to gauge this added exposure against what they saw him do in Europe.
No Chalmers
Uh oh, i bet that bandwagon starts to get a little lighter now. Hey he was a good second round pick. Let the biatching and moaning begin

Looking for more size?
I was surprised that we were looking at so many big men. Makes me think we may be packaging one of ours in a trade. Frye and/or Pryzbilla might be on the trading block if we are looking at Lopez, Speights, McGee, Arthur, Randolph or Koufos.
I doubt Joel is on the block
But I’m not surprised about Frye. Still, I don’t think they’re actively shopping Frye specifically, just doing their due diligence. A lot of people who might be the BPA for #13 are PFs, so KP has to bring them in and see if we can get a diamond in the rough.
Since most of the PGs people discuss could be gone by #13, and even Joe Alexander, perhaps one of those big men you listed is the best player left on the board. I wouldn’t necessarily think it means the Blazers don’t like Joel or Frye, they’re just looking for the best player they can get.

I was thinking the same thing
Perhaps Frye+Jack+? to move up? Take a PF later in the draft to groom behind LMA/Trout…

Unlike Casey Holdahl
I am not at all surprised to not see Chase “Buttah” Budinger on the list. In fact, I’m relieved. I am, however, surprised to see Gary Forbes. I like Gary Forbes, and he is the kind of guy who is good at a lot of things, but not great at one particular thing, which seems to be attractive to a lot of people. He’ll be available in the middle of the second round, so I wouldn’t mind Portland getting him although I realize there is probably no way that this is going to happen. I’m also probably partial because he, like my mother, is from Panama. As a former resident and mild Razorbacks fan, I’m also glad to see Arkansas center Steven Hill and shooting guard Sonny Weems. I suspect Sonny Weems will remind many of Travis Outlaw at the 2 spot, as he is incredibly athletic but not known for his basketball IQ. Rounding out my favorites from this list in no particular order are Mike Green, James Gist, Lester Hudson, David Padgett, Russell Westbrook, Jeremy Pargo, Courtney Lee, Juan Palacios and, for the sake of always reminding me of the song “What Cha Gonna Do For Me” by Chaka Khan every time I see him or hear his name, Sasha Kaun.

Nice.
The dates I’m interested in:
6/10: I really like David Padgett as a player. He’s a little older and a little smallish, but boy does he know how to play. A great player on a Louisville team that went deep this year. He can score down low when needed and knows how to pass. A great second round pickup.
6/12: Not surprised Westbrook gets a near solo audition.
6/17: Alexander vs. Greene vs. Speights … excellent! If both Westbrook and Alexander are gone when we pick, I can see us reaching for a player like Speights or Darell Arthur.
6/19: Lots of big guys here. I’m interested in how Koufos and Lopez perform against each other, and Jackson is an interesting second round prospect.
6/21: Rush vs. Lee. I would guess Lee would excel in an individual-type workout session, whereas Rush would not. He’s more of a team player. My last name is Lee, so it would be cool to have someone named Lee on the team. We’re practically family, and neither of us are Chinese. Go figure.

Pritchard is trading down
At # 13, we aren’t going to get Westbrook or Augustine (as far as the latter, it seems most BE fans don’t want Augustine anyways!).
Both players look good in Orlando and only helped their stock. Apparently, Westbrook look very good which makes it even more difficult to land him at the # 13 spot! Also, with Indiana and Sacramento ahead of us in the draft, and both looking for PG help, these fellows will be gone before we get our chance.
Oh yeah, for you guys thinking Pritchard will convince another GM to make a deal with him to move up, that’s not going to happen! First, the talent level at #13 spot isn’t all that much different than the talent at 17 to 23 picks. Second, who wants to be the next GM to be compared to Kevin McHale, and be reminded everytime Portland is playing for NBA Championship, that you were the GM that gave us the last piece to make multiple runs for an NBA title!
So, Pritchard can go BPA (possible) or move down and grab an foreign player that he can stash in Europe for a year or two (more likely). My guess is Batum. He’s a really athletic 6’8” swing player that can do it all that is coming off a bad year in Europe. Thus, we can get him in the late teens or early twenties in the draft, let him continue to develop overseas, and then, bring him back in 2009/2010 season after the Webster or Outlaw argument is decided.
As far as Augustine working out by himself, it could be simply that the Blazers aren’t done with their scheduling yet and we may still see some additional players added later.
I’m surprised the Blazers aren’t taking a look at DeAndre Jordan. I’ve have seen his name drop in several mock drafts at 13 and 14 spot. A very athlectic seven foot “project” that can develop behind Oden and Pryz for a couple years and then take over for Joel when his contract runs out. I know there are questions about his work ethic but being around Oden, Aldridge and Roy, this might be the perfect environment for the young fella!
Plus, gives us a little extra insurance in case Oden doesn’t make a full recovery. The upside comparison is Dwight Howard and what are we really risking, a chance to draft Joe Alexander or Donte Greene? Worth the risk at # 13 don’t you think?
Missing
Because teams often work out players to send smoke screens to other teams, it is not always about how the team is working out. Clearly their are people that the blazers are working out that they are not that interested in. However as I read the list I notice that Kevin Love is not going to work out for the Blazers. This is a good things to me, the blazers not need him and he would cause problems. So the blazers have no interest in him or does he not want to come to portland?
I think that
Luc Mbah a Moute could be an interesting prospect. He was kind of overshadowed at UCLA and he is a good defender

Kind of a Ryan Gomes type of player.
Not a bad asset to have on the bench.

No Malik Hairston?
Leunen is there and Bryce Taylor is there. But no Malik Hairston. I wonder why. Maybe people think he’s reached his full potential already. Not big enough to be an NBA power forward and not quick enough to be a SF. Still, he’s a solid player and a very hard worker. I hope someone drafts him. I get the sneaking feeling though that he is destined to play in Europe.
I just saw on the news
that Malik Hairston will be there too.

PF?
I think the chip on him is he isn’t big enogh to be an NBA SF and not quick enough to be a SG.

Did really well in the predraft combine (draft express listed him as one of the top 5 most impressive players in Orlando). Whereas before he was projected to be a late 2nd pick or undrafted, now it is looking like he will be picked early-mid 2nd round.
