Joe Alexander
There is not much NBA news right now, so I thought I'd do a little research on one of the more likely draftees for the Blazers according to the mock drafts, Joe Alexander. When watching college basketball, I primarily watch the Pac-10, so I did not know a lot about him. Fortunately, there is a wealth of information on the internet about him, including some extensive highlight videos. This post focuses on reporting facts, but I'll include a few comments as well.
Basics:
6-8, 230 lbs. 21 years old (born same month and year as Martell Webster)
Stats, junior year at West Virginia:
Mpg: 31.6, ppg: 16.1, Fg%46.2, FT%81.4, 3P%26.8 6.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 2.2 TO
West Virginia played at a relatively slow pace (197th in Division I) and against a strong Big East. Overall, West Virginia played the 34th best defense, according to http://kenpom.com/rate.php. He played more like a 4 than a 3 at West Virginia... The stats make clear that ge's not a three point shooter.

Demonstration of leaping ability: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PKY3ashUMI&feature=related
EXTENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdAYyqSOuPc&feature=related
What the videos show: a SF with more of an interior game/mid-range game than current Blazers SFs. Lot's of dunks. Lot's of pull up jumpers. Not great handles. Not a great three-point shooter. Great leaping ability. Not great lateral quickness.

"he’s only been playing organized basketball for about five years now"
"averaged just 1 point per game only three years ago playing prep school basketball at Hargrave Military Academy"
"everyone we spoke with that had been working with him over the past week could not stop raving about how well he had been responding to them thus far. “A fierce worker,” Joe Abunassar told us. “He’s an animal in the weight room,” strength trainer Tony Falce told us. “He’s worked non-stop for every minute since the second he got here.” One after one, each of the trainers filtered over to our direction to share a story about their favorite pupil. And indeed, physically he’s extremely impressive, quick off his feet, agile, with a great frame, and big hands. “He has great strength, balance, and power” Abunassar told us."
"He spent six years of his childhood in China and barely played on his prep school team. But the recipe he has used to rise to stardom is familiar — he has a work ethic so maniacal that one of his brothers refers to it as “unhealthy"
"Be it in China or playing high school ball in the United States, Joe Alexander always had a ball in his hands. He would dribble in the school locker room for nearly four hours until volleyball practice ended and he could use the gym."
My random thoughts: any player that is still improving is intriguing, but also scary. Would seem to be something of a gamble. Similar to Outlaw and Webster in that he is raw, but a much different game than Outlaw or Webster. Nonetheless, if the Blazers drafted Alexander it would probably mean either Outlaw or Webster is on the trading block or was already traded. I'm not sure if he "fits" the Blazers needs any better or worse than Webster or Outlaw, though my instinct says the Blazers need Websters outside shooting more than Alexander's midrange game and rebounding. Neither Webster nor Outlaw is a defensive specialist, but they have more potential than Alexander.
Your thoughts?

Seems to be a Trout-law type player
With that said, I agree that we’re already pretty well stocked with J.Jones, Webster, Outlaw, at the SF position.
For that matter, we’re pretty well stocked period.
If we take him, I’m guessing he’ll be traded like T. Green was, unless he is some kind of instant fit into our system and culture and is showing solid production and improvement.
Current team + Greg + Rudy = Blazers losing narrowly to the Spurs in the 2008-2009 Western Conference Finals. Book it.
Agree
My initial conclusion was similiar. We are well stocked at the SF position and he doesn’t blow away anyone we have on particularly valuable skills.
I suppose the X-factor is his work ethic and record of improvement. He’s improved a great deal in the past three years and seems to have an obessesive work ethic.
We could take him
and finally get someone that will participate in the dunk contest.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
A more important question than whether he fits our needs is ...
whether he fits our culture. And he fits our culture like a glove. If Westbrook is gone and we can’t trade up successfully, I think they’d take a flyer on him at #13. There simply aren’t very many players in this draft who scream “TRAILBLAZER” in terms of culture, and he’s one of them. Problem is that with how he’s performing in pre-draft workouts, even Alexander might not be there at #13.

Work ethic
Is supposedly really strong. That’s key, even if he’s destined only to be a role player. So many people who make it with talent alone get a cruel wake-up when they hit the NBA. Not that talent-poor people who work hard don’t get the same wake-up, but still.
BLZRS FRVR
That is the thing that is going to suck
in the next few years, KP and we will see all these players that will get drafted lower than they should and we will want them, but since we already have a roster full of those type of players, we will have to let them go, much like Taurean, great guy, could be a great player, smart, winner and I imagine that it pained KP to trade him, but we had nothing to offer him other than a paycheck. In this draft I have my eyes on these players that could help us/would be really good for this team:
Alexander: for the things mentioned above
Rush: Could be our Bowen as he is good defensively and can hit the 3 decently
Chalmers: Had one of the highest eFG% in the NCAA last year (40%+ 3pt) and was first team defensively
Lester Hudson: Great scorer and pesky defender
Richard Hendrix: Milsap type player, great rebounder built like a tank
All of these players would be able to help us out and flourish as I feel that we are the right situation for them, IF we had PT for them.
However this is a good thing, as we are now at a point in our development that we no longer need to develop those role player types, we need only one more piece to finish off our cake, to consolidate out pieces and grab a starting PG.
We need to change our mindset from just wanting to be good to wanting to be great. There will always be teams that have great seasons, win 50+ games and then gracefully bow out in the first or even second round, we need to become one of those teams that pushes deep into the playoffs each year and the season is considered a disappointment if we do not at least reach the WCF, true we are a few years away, but honestly I know that it is going to happen a lot sooner than we expect, look a this year, I was expecting a good season would be .500 and a great season would be playoffs 8th seed, all of this WITH Oden. We had a GREAT season in my book and everyone here and around the country were surprised, if not shocked by how far we got this season.
Good times ahead my friends.
Thanks
If they do not trade the pick, I think 13 is low enough that you have to draft the best player available. I think you can draft for need, if the difference is just a spot or two, on your draft board. I doubt there will be any point guards worth picking around by 13, so you have to go with the BPA. I would be happy to cheer for this fellow.
Life is like a cherry tomato; it tastes like chicken.
Alexander and BPA
Everyone seems to be hyping Alexander so much, I don’t think he’ll be available. If he is available, he sounds like Jerome Kersey but with better hands and a higher upside, so how can you not take him?
The BPA things reminds me of ‘81 when the Blazers had #15 & #16. They wanted a SF and then the BPA. They got Jeff Lamp at 15 and Darnell Valentine at 16…. so, yeah, BPA sounds good to me.

Cool
I wouldn’t be mad if the 13th landed us Alexander.
He seems like a freak….....he’ll be a nice piece on a great team.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
id take him if available
but still wish the draft was at least 7 rounds… i heard about this kid at WOU who sposedly has freak skill… playground draft pick but at #375 easily worth the investment
If you dont talk to your cats about catnip, who will?
OVER-rated... Stay away from this prospect.
The NCAA tourney is famous for “making” guys college careers, which ultimately MAKES their names for the NBA draft. But, it is very clear that success in the NCAA’s doesnt translate to guaranteed NBA stardom. Especially if you are not a 3-point shooter.

Nyet.
You’re arguing the chicken or the egg. Did the Tourney make Joe, or did Joe just happen to blossom at the right time?
Beilein’s system of motion offense and three-pointers was never a good fit for what Alexander brings to the table. Not to mention he was stuck behind a sweet lineup his freshman year. So when Huggins shows up Alexander all of a sudden has a good year and it’s all hype? Or just a fluke? Or did he finally have a coach who knew how to put him in a position to succeed? It took him awhile to adjust to the new system, but boy when he did he was lights out. He was absolutely WVU’s go-to player, and legitimately unstoppable to 18 feet. His turnaround jumper on the block is Wallace/Aldridge-esque (i.e. unblockable), and he was using the bank shot from the wing like Tim Duncan. Not to mention he was really the only player on the whole team worth guarding.
If you don’t like the guy, that’s cool, but not liking him simply because he blossomed in the Big East and NCAA Tourneys is a little silly IMHO. Nobody can teach the athleticism and motor that he was naturally gifted with, and by all accounts he has the work ethic to put those natural abilities to good use. Instead of talking about the NCAA Tourney “making” Joe Alexander, we should be talking about Joe Alexander making the NCAA a whole lot of fun to watch.

I'd approve
If we didn’t have two SFs who have ceilings God only knows. And then there’s that 3 point specialist with the sore knee.
excellent research
Good work Sam. You dug a little deeper than most do when researching and evaluating a player. A lot of this stuff I wasn’t aware of.
I like Alexander’s potential, work ethic, and strength. He’s an intriguing prospect… but I think you hit it dead on… does he bring anything different than what we already have with Outlaw and Webster? Is he an upgrade at the SF position?
As we get further along, I grow increasingly attached to our current roster of SF’s… outlaw, webs, and jones. I think the Blazers are more solid and dynamic at the position than what the majority of fans and media believe. When you look at the mix of those 3 players, they are very versatile and have a very high ceiling. Jones is set in what he brings to the table, but Outlaw and Webster are still developing… and I love what they have done thus far with limited experience. It would be a shame to trade either away at this point after having invested so much in their development.
Drafting best player vs. team needs
I agree we don’t need another SF, we have 3 great wingmen already. But if we were drafting on best player available then I can’t argue against Joe alexander – the guy has phenomenal potential and a fantastic work ethic. It would be nice to get Westbroook but he’ll be going higher than #13.
A player who has impressed at camp is Ty Lawson, someone who can fill our team needs. Though undersized, he knows how to push the ball and is one of the quickest running around in college ball. has great court vision and will allow Roy to play off the ball more. If there’s one ting we desperately need to address next season is our inability to run the break… something which Ty Lawson can do better than even this years top draft picks (not named Augustin).
I’m not saying waste our 13 pick on as guy predicted late 1st round pick, but maybe we should trade our 3 2nd round picks to move up to get Lawson.
Try-Outs
For what it’s worth, the Blazers are bringing Alexander in for a look. I also read much of this a few days ago. At #13, you can’t always get what you want, but he is an intriguing prospect and we could do worse. The problem with PG is that Rose, Mayo, Gordon, Bayless, Augustin and Westbrook are all projected at #12 or higher right now. I’m still not entirely sure that they aren’t going to trade up. On the other hand, the Blazers are bringing in Augustin, Westbrook, Hudson, Forbes and Lawson, as well as some other lesser knowns at PG. It looks like, at least from their try-outs, that they don’t seem to think that Mayo, Gordon or Bayless are within reach. They’re also not bringing in Gallinari, the one SF rated higher by most than Alexander, but they are bringing in Donte Green, whose rated just below Alexander. Intriguing to read over those invited to the camp.
when did SF become a strength?!?
I keep reading that the SF position is not a need. We are not even sure if JJ2 is going to return and Outlaw has played his best min. as a PF. That leaves Webster and…and…and… Rudy? Wait he weighs a buck 85, umm…
Sometimes I feel like I'm going in different directions...
3/4 Court Sprint
His 3/4 Court Sprint at the combine was the fastest, beating out the likes of Rose and Augustine…......he beat everybody.

I meant second
He was second behind Sonny Weems. Still…....looks like they were the only two, sub 3.

There was a lot of commotion over my Luke Jackson Comparison in another thread
Joe A. 36.5 vert 11.33 lane agility 2.99 3/4 24 reps bench 6’7.25” 220lbs
Luke Jackson 36 vert 11.10 lane agility 3/4 NA 13 reps bench 6’6” 212 lbs
Lot’s of blazer fans were rooting for Luke Jackson to fall to us the last time we had the # 13 pick. Here is your chance again.
Alexander v. Jackson
Alexander has three inches of vertical reach on Jackson. That and his strength and size make Alexander more of an interior player than Jackson… On the other hand, Jackson was far more skilled coming out of college than Alexander, so I don’t think it’s a crazy comparison.
Plus
Didn’t Jackson have a HORRIBLE injury his rookie year, or at least a series of them? I dunno if he’d be good or if Alexander will be good, but Jackson’s injuries really played a role in his bustiness.
I’m surprised Joe Alexanders vertical is only 36.5, because of those pictures of him kissing the rim and all that. He’s more than 40 inches shorter than a 10 foot rim, so his leaping ability should be right around 40.
Judging from the photo, anyways. He seems to jump higher than 36 inches from his clips as well.
Mortimer
Jackson had back issues
not exactly a horrible injury like Joe Theismann’s, but definitely a debilitating one.
