2008 NBA Playoffs: Your impressions?

I thought we should have a playoffs recap thread, if only to stave off draft and trade fanposts. Yes, by that I mean the names Russel Westbrook, DJ Augustin, Joe Alexander, Eric Gordan, OJ Mayo, Joe Calderon, Jarret Jack, and Devin Harris are officially banned from this thread. NO MORE.

Ahem. Anyways.

I thought the theatrics and dramatic hype of this years playoffs made it very entertaing, I never thought it took away from the actual basketball being played. The drama never overshadwed the quality of the series and there were definitely some noteworthy series/moments that I'll remember (if only till next year). I'm not going to cover all of the series btw, only the ones that interested me most.

The overall theme I noticed was the changing of the guard in the NBA. The young teams, the Lakers, Hornets, 76s, Hawks, Jazz, Rockets; they are all rising into prominence while teams like the Suns, Pistons, Mavericks, and Spurs are increasingly looking like they are going to be looking on the outside in from now on.

First off, and most recent. The Finals.

(An aside about KG) Honestly I don't hate KG too much, from all I've heard he's a good guy. In fact I used to know someone who was neighbors with him in Minny. Apparently he visited him when he was seriously ill at one point to cheer him up.

The emotional histrionics of the finals celebration were awesome, you could see how happy they were to win the championship. Seeing Kobe look like he was about to cry was just as awesome. It was actually a memorable event as it should be and hearing KG shout "TOP OF THE WORLD MA" like the Kanye West song made me laugh. The stuff before was great too, when he was crying and said "oh f***... sorry", Michelle Tafoya "It's ok". I was laughing hysterically at the last 10 minutes,  and at about the 4 minute mark, I started shouting "GET IT TO 40, GET IT TO 40". The random bleeping when KG would scream stuff like "C'MON MOTHER F*****"  Watching Lamar Odom get pissed off after the Celtics rained open 3 after open 3 on the offensive end was a spectacular sight. Did I say I hate Lamar Odom? The gatorade dumping. Paul Pierce winning a championship in Boston after what a decade? After being stabbed at a night club, after having to play with Antoine Walker for like 4 seasons,it was a great moment.  Infinitely better than last years forgettable Cavs-Spurs.

The turn around was remarkable and definitely the stuff of NBA legend. I mean a coach that led a team to an 18 game losing streak leads them to a NBA championship the next year over their historic rivals, you couldn't have asked for a more better hollywood script. All the "unbuntu" gimmicks aside, you could tell that his players genuinely liked Doc Rivers. The "Comeback Game" (not a big Bill Simmons fan but this is an apporiate title), will probably be an ESPN classic, along with game 5. Overall it was a fantastic series, the quality of basketball played was excellent, and I was actually entertained watching it (unlike the last 2 years).

The Cavs/Wizards series, I live in the DC area so I followed it more closely than most of you I'm sure...

The whole Deshawn/Lebron fued was just hilarious. The soldier boy-Jay-z analogy by Lebron, then Soldier boy shows up to a game 4. Deshawn doing that stupid "you can't see me handwave", followed by Lebron torching him. The return of Gilbert, followed by the sudden exit of Gilbert  (without telling his coach).

I liked how Lebron played through all the hard fouls the Wizards landed on him, even though he wore down as the playoffs progressed, and even though sometimes he refers to himself in third person in his interviews.

Hawks-Celtics

Really got to see how a real home crowd can carry a young team, it was refreshing to see a team I wasn't familiar with, and watching the Hawks take the Celts all the way to game 7 was completely unexpected.

The hawks are fun to watch, they have a lot of really athletic guys that get up the floor. Josh Smith is a very talented player isn't he? Joe Johnson was unstoppable in game 5 in that 4th quater. This team should have a bright future and I'm glad, Atlanta has been terrible for far too long.

The ZaZa-KG headbutt was one of my favorite moments of the playoffs. It kind of reminded me of wildabeasts locking horns for whatever reason.

76ers-Pistons

Another young team going against a heavy favorite. Going to 6 against the mighty PIstons was definitely a sucess in my opinion.

The thing I remember most about this series was Samuel Dalembert's head, didn't he have "SD" or something shaved ridiculous like that shaved into his head? Super defense or something.

Magic-Raptors

Chris Bosh "He's (Dwight Howard) superman and I'm Lex Luthor". Indeed, I don't think the Raptors are ever going to beat Orlando unless they get some toughness and dump some of their euro floppers.

 Spurs-Suns

Poor Steve Nash, will he ever get a ring?

The Hornets

My favorite team to watch over these playoffs

I think Chris Paul dismembered the corpse of Jason Kidd and sold his still pumping organs against Dallas.  I was amazed at just how good this guy is. I made him my favorite player who looks like "he could be sort of Indian", sorry LMA.

Anyway a good spring for basketball if I can say so myself.

It looks like you really enjoyed this year's playoffs.

I’d comment (B’oh, I did!) , but I didn’t watch a single game after the Blazers’ season ended. Heck I only watched three games during the season. But reading all the posts on Blazers’ Edge made it feel like I was there.

Oh that makes sense now

That truly is the only way you could be a member of the Jarret Jack fan club!

Boston coach Doc Rivers said he was surprised by the firing of Saunders.
"I don't understand it," Rivers said. "It makes coaching not fun."

Oof, that stings a little.

But perhaps you’re right. Still, Portland fans are the only ones who seem to be down on him. And in fairness, I only joined the club recently, with everyone trying to give him away in trades. No one was talking about his strengths at all, which is surprising, because the ideal PG skillset for Portland just happens to be the same skillset Jack has. It is a unique set, as I have seen argued in all the PG trades that have been discussed. So why get rid of him, when his downsides are correctable with experience, of which he only has three years? Waiting another year to see if he pulls it all together just makes sense to me, especially since the cost is so low.

I think his positives

Are things other teams CRAVE. Leadership, heart, great teammate, toughness, strength, coachable, great size, and works HARD.

We take those things for granted now, in Portland. I guess we’re spoiled.

Obviously, he bugged the hell out of me when his big ol’ feet stepped on the endline. He had a few turnovers that we didn’t really need. To me, every one of his negatives get solved with time and experience. His one true negative, his quickness on defense, may always be a problem but I think he can improve there as well with experience. He is at least decent at funneling and pushing his guy to a direction.

I get why people would be annoyed with him, but his age and his positives outweigh the negatives to me. I don’t know if he will ever be a real PG, but his combo-ness and decent PGing could fit us perfectly.

I DO know other teams would love what he does, because it is a lot more rare than we are acting. Jack is a great kid by all accounts who truly CARES about winning and about his team.

Definitely, too many of us are focusing on the tiny negatives with Jack, and his turnovers have been blown out of proportion.

All that said, now MIGHT be the time to trade him because he does have good value AND Rudy is coming over. Rudy stands a good chance to take nearly all of Jack’s minutes, unless Jack can take over Blake’s minutes, and we give Sergio none. Jack might not play much this upcoming season, and then lose his value accordingly.

It’s a tough call. I think his best, smartest ball is coming up. I don’t think he is a dumb guy at all, or has a low BBIQ. He is known for stealing plays and calling them back to the enemy. He just makes young guy, rookie mistakes, and as a 3rd year player whose role has switched each season I don’t think that is unreasonable.

Hornets...

Were the team I enjoyed watching this post season. I actually felt a little upset when they lost. Paul is definitely my favorite non Blazer right now.

That’s strange I’ve been here. I’ve been lurking mostly. Not too much I can add to the draft discussion that hasn’t already been said, I’m pretty hyped about it though. If I knew any Blazer fans around here I’d have a draft day party. I think I’ll be disappointed if KP doesn’t pull off some trades.

A VERY GOOD PLAYOFFS

Would have been better had Dallas and Phx not made two horrible trades that took them out of the running. Had they stayed the course with the great teams that had they would both have challenged for rings.

I kept thinking

throughout the playoffs “you other teams better get after it this year because in the future it will be dang hard to beat the Blazers”.

Joey Crawford should not be a referee or at least not be a referee for a SA game. Judges recuse themselves for conflict of interest. Referees should as well.

It helped me identify and focus again my level of disgust for a certain player and the fawning media worshiping him.

We have a long way to go to be at that level of determination that Boston exhibited. Might take a couple of flameouts before we can get over that hump.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

I thought the Spurs-Lakers series was pretty interesting

Also NO v. Spurs.

The rest…yawn.

I’m getting really bothered by all the complaining about the refereeing. Everyone knows the refs are sub-par. Fans need to be quiet or stop buying tickets. And the NBA needs to address their blatantly obvious ref issues. Until then all I hear is a bunch of annoying buzzing in my ears.

I'm also really turned off by Clay Bennett and Stern

and their romantic ride off into the sunset. I don’t like liars. Clay Bennett is a liar. Everyone who’s paying attention knows Clay Bennett is a liar. David Stern knows Clay Bennett is a liar. The fact that a sleazy liar can purchase a team and insult and alienate the entire locality (and beyond) with his actions, and then use that as an excuse to move the team, and then have the little troll-like commish support it all…well, it really rubs me the wrong way.

If the Blazers didn’t exist, I would not be an NBA customer in any way shape or form. I’m barely one now, with these latest allegations from Donaghy, I refuse to buy tickets to games even though I’d planned to this season. Simply because I don’t feel like being scammed. Yes, I’ll still watch the games on Comcast, but I don’t like myself for it.

I'll sum the playoff up for you...

........................... home teams won lots of blowouts.

Predictable. Boring.

Colonel Rondo and his second round armada?

If Boston is determine to rebuild and cut salary isn’t two mid lotto pics and the right salary filler decent. Maybe not enough but better than what most teams get in that situation. I would prefer that over the Chris Paul package.

I hope and figure that the Trail Blazers could have the best of both worlds. I’ve never seen a more bountiful 2nd round. Its conceivable that the team could deal both lotto picks and still find some nice players in the draft. Players like Orlando Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Kevin Jones, Will Barton are 1st rounders in most drafts even if its just based on hype and potential. Then you have some possible gems in such a deep draft like Machado, a couple guys that I personally like from Georgetown-their center Henry Sims and forward Hollis Tompson. Both high upside players that I would love to watch in the summer league. If PA were to ever buy into or trade into late first or second round now is the time. Give me Freeland, Diebler and four second rounders in the summer league with Rondo coaching.
