Blazers, fatty, n.w. divison and t.porter

I recently had a conversation with Fatty, yes fatty, after the celt's won their new banner. we talked about him choosing lakers to win it all and i understood why he chose the lakers to win it all back when gasol was traded to the lakers. Im not going to induldge into that now. What really popped in our conversation is this:

tbrewer618: oden is ours dude for at least 5 years nate because of
r.adelman i love coach rick and i'm going to be rooting very hard for
terry porter in phoenix this season.
me: Me too! Terry porter has all of my wishes for him
me: But we will win. Lol.
me: i love my 2 guys duckworth, kersey, and maybe even uncle
cliffy will be on his staff nate
tbrewer618: pdx=57 wins nate
me: Whoa whoa
me: This year?
me: 57?
tbrewer618: 08-09 trail blazers=57-25 nate book it !!
me: Oh man!
tbrewer618: will win the n.west division nate get your t-shirts now
dude.
me: Whooaaaa
me: Should blazersedge.com know about this?
tbrewer618: t.porter will be next season's d.rivers he'll get it done in
the valley of the sun.yeah let them know i'm guaranteeing it nate book
it !!!!!!!!
me: Haha!
tbrewer618: tell the chatroom i said pdx=57 wins and n.west divison
champions t-shirts now book it !!!!!

i hope fatty is right. after all, his last two picks of houston and lakers has been wrong...but on may 22nd of 2007, he was right about getting oden. so lets pray hard that he is right!!!

Terry Porter certanly has the pieces to do well in Phx

I see them having a much better record than the mavs. As for 57 wins….I could see it if we stay healthy all year. Ask fatty to make sure he comes back before the season starts and have another prediction contest. I want to see how many times he types the words “Don Shula’s Steakhouse.”

Yeah!

He has to come back… He owes me a season of comments without grammatical errors…

I enjoy his opinions

I hope he’s past the insults directed at bedge members.

ummm

He also said to book the Rockets at the beginning of last season.

They WERE starting to look good, but injuries can kill ANY team.

I’m going to say over 50 and unlike last year where I said we’d win a bunch up front and lose more towards the end, I think we’ll take some time warming up but then we’re going to be pretty consistent and increase our wins towards the end.

57 is pretty high, particularly over on this end of the universe.

Then again, I can see where he’s coming from:

Weaker next year:
Spurs are weaker
Suns… HAHAHAHA Porter might get something done but I think the window has closed. Shaq is too much of an anchor.
Rockets… those egos have to be filled with doubt as they’re certainly not filled with health.
Dallas… they have a lighter boat anchor in Kidd.

Stronger:
Lakers… with their center the Finals possibly go the other direction, but those Celtics were HUNGRY! I suspect that like Rocky who lost due to over confidence, the lakers might actually come back a bit meaner.
Blazers… Oden and Rudy… ‘nuff said.
Minnesota… Foye was out injured most of the year. I expect these guys to come back stronger and more of a cohesive unit… from 22 wins.
Seattle… Can they REALLY do worse? Durant should be bulking up and have built more strength which is his major hindrance.
Clippers… with brand they have to improve… but how much?
Utah… They’ll get better with more experience, but I don’t see their win totals going up even though they’ll be a stronger team.

Everyone else i think will be pretty much the same and New Orleans is one injury to Peja away from the deep dark abyss of a plummeting drop.

Still, what are those degrees of better vs worse and how do we stack up?

I think next year could end something like this on the west coast:

Lakers
New Orleans
Blazers
Utah

I expect the Lakers to achieve 60 plus wins IF they don’t crumble and they’re healthy with all the parts.

If new orleans is healthy, I think they can hit 56 again… just don’t blow on Peja’s back.

the blazers… if everything goes well/perfectly, I think we’re in the 54 range for a tie with Utah, but we’ll have owned them in at least three games again and so have the tie breaker. But things have to go perfectly for us. Oden needs to be in a grove after ten games. Chemistry needs to be good particularly with no playing time for good talent. Communication and skill levels need to have gone up a notch by all the young kids.

I’d say book over 50 and hope for more.

fatty's predictions

First, this is just for fun… no bad feelings here.
On 9/19/07, fatty posted his detailed 2007-08 NBA predictions on Blazer’s Edge. Here are the highlights:

The East

Ranked Miami #1 “Shaq on a mission”
Ranked Cleveland #2
Ranked Toronto #3
Ranked New York #4 “zbo will have the last laugh”
Ranked Detroit #5
Ranked Chicago #6
Ranked Boston #7 “all the buzz will = bust”

My analysis: Incredibly wrong on all accounts. Could anyone have made worse picks? Miami #1? New York #4? Boston = bust? Wow.

The West

Ranked Suns #1, Spurs #2, Rockets #3, Mavs #4, Denver #5, Utah #6
Ranked Memphis #7 “will be the league story in 08”
Ranked Lakers #8

My analysis: nothing special here either way; this is where most people had the Lakers picked. Pretty sure Memphis was not the league story, though…

MVP pick – Nash
Rookie of the Year pick – Conley
Ummm…. no.

Finals prediction:
Rockets over Miami in 6 games.
Yes, he really picked the Rockets and Miami for the finals.

So now he is loving the Suns (Shaq’s team) for next year after loving Miami (Shaq’s team) last year… I see a trend

by section309 on Jun 18, 2008 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

in fairness

Memphis had the potential to be a surprise.

The reason is that Pau was injured for most of the previous year and then came back with rather nice numbers. Add a full year and Rudy Gay and the development of Darko whatever his name is…

Darko Milli vanilli never developed, had the chance, and I think can be considered an extreme bust.
Rudy Gay did a great job.
Gasol… mentally weak and that was showcased even more with the Lakers. He’s afeared.

So I was with Fatty on that one.

The lakers did their trade mid-season otherwise I might have agreed. I never thought Peja would make a whole year healthy and I think the suns could have been number one if they hadn’t traded for Shaq (again see the mid-season trades not taken into account).

I think Golden state showed they are a legit team, and I think you can expect them to make the play-offs next year because i see a few teams dropping.

Thanks for the recap.

I was going to note that as I recalled it, Fatty wasn’t even close with his predictions.

I will give him credit for making them.

I know what Fatty's problem was

I don’t see a “BOOK IT” anywhere on that prediction list. He needs to book it to seal these results into the fates of time, ensuring that they shall happen when the time is right.

If he had booked it, we’d be singing the praises of a redeemed McGrady and Yao powerhouse.

As much as I'd like to see him be right...

... fatty’s prediction track record isn’t exactly encouraging.

I think Portland has a good chance to crack the 50 win mark. We’ve seen 10 win increases (avg) the past two seasons. One more is not out of the question. 57 is over optimistic, even for me.

by timg56 on Jun 18, 2008 1:26 PM PDT reply actions

53-54 wins

That’s my goofy prediction, fatty.

Looking forward to having you back in a few months. How’s your fiance? Let us know, please.

Yeah just a few more months of self-imposed exile

and then the return of fatty. It should be interesting to say the least. I think a 50+ win prediction is spot on. Fatty is just a bit of an optimist here sort of an anti-timbo. We love you timbo because you make us all feel like uber-positive homers.

Man I know

I was WAAYYY off about this season mostly due to injuries and monster trades at the deadline. I forgive fatty for his awful AWFUL prediction record. On the other hand if Yao isn’t hurt and that 22 game streak happens? Fatty is looking like some sort of genius.
