Dallas Needs Players

As a fellow Blazer's Edge reader, I know what you are thinking: "I need to read about another trade proposal... about as badly as I need another hole in my head.."

But, here's the thing: Kevin Pritchard is going to make some kind of trade. He just is. He's talked about it many, many times. All of the NBA insiders are reporting that Portland's pick is on the block. Recently Prichard even said that the trade talk is heating up. It is going to happen. Where there is smoke there is fire. Unfortunately, I have no idea what he's going to do and it is driving me a little nuts. So, like many of you, I scour the internet for word of teams that are looking for players and try to piece together a plausible answer. It's a great puzzle (My girlfriend cannot figure out why I haven't solved it yet). On most days I come up with nothing. Today, however, I find this little gem of a story from HoopsWorld. Here is the key information:

Why Dallas Has to Trade

Today the Dallas media is talking about Eddie Jones, who could opt out of his contract with the Mavericks and give Dallas an eighth potential roster spot to fill... As much as the Mavs would like to believe they're going to be contenders next season, it's not going to happen without some other team out there taking pity on them. They're fighting luxury tax/salary cap issues because they're overpaying Josh Howard and Jason Terry. It made sense to overpay them at the time because the team was so deep and seemed so close to winning a title. But now with Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd taking up the bulk of the team's cap space, it becomes hard to fill all of those other roster spots when there's no money to do it with.

Ultimately the Mavs are going to need to trade one of their top guys and get multiple players in return. Not multiple players like they got from the Nets, but multiple players who can actually crack the rotation and contribute to winning basketball games.

Multiple players that can play? Hmm, who has more players than minutes. WE DO! They have a need. Maybe they'll do something relatively hasty: Jack, Martell and the 13th pick for Howard? I don't know. I don't do the whole salary cap thing.... which is why I posted this on Blazersedge. The best Blazers-Mavs trade gets a big huge prize! Let's hear it! Have at it, trade hounds!

Terrible trade idea

Have some patience with Martell. He has a NBA body, is a deep shooter,
will get better at attacking the hole with ball handling work and is a nice young man who fits with this young team. We don’t need another Blue Lighter !
The only trade I want to see is a slight move up to get Westbrook. A superior
athlete, who can help us with our perimeter defense, has improved each
year and is according to all reports a nice young man who works extremely hard.
Sounds like CULTURE to me.

It's GO time !

Pritchard

Well, you may want Pritchard to move up and take Westbrook, but do you think that’s what he’s going to do? As I said, I’m not so much interested in trying to “decide” what trade we should do, as figuring out what Pritchard is going to do. I think he’s going to get a veteran… and I think the Mavs are a likely trading partner.

terrible trade idea...

I second that.

Keep Martell, will have more value for similar contract to Howard.

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 17, 2008 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

You are kidding, right?

Shooters like Webster aren’t that hard to find. See James Jones. What else has Webster done? Webster was outplayed by most SF throughout the season. He’s still young, you say, but Al Thornton and Thadeus Young came into the league and outplayed Webster in their first seasons. Webster had plenty of minutes and plenty of opportunities… Howard would be a giant upgrade over Webster.

by PoliSam on Jun 17, 2008 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Thornton is older than Brandon Roy even

Martell shoulda’ gone to college, but he didn’t and now we got him. In my opinion, he’s got the body, the skills, and the mentality/work ethic to get the most out of his skills in the long run. He had a very shakey first two years and struggled with his confidence (even seemed depressed from afar), but had some great all-round games his third season.

He’s very young and could turn out a lot of different ways. I don’t keep him at all costs, and Howard is definitely a better player, but I’d like to see what Martell could do—though if Howard hadn’t had his dumb but honest interview about smoking weed a few years ago that just got noticed recently, I’d do it. I personally don’t mind about the weed stuff, and Howard is great, but you know it’ll cause a stink and be real annoying.

Howard is better than Martell, but Martell’s best days are ahead of him. I favor his all-round game to Outlaw’s, and I think he can be a key part of our future as long as he’s okay beind the 3rd/4th option. If he keeps his current skillset and just gains more experience, he’d fit just fine. If he continues to improve at the rate he improved this recent season, he could be pretty good. The tools are there, and we know he WANTS to be good.

Webster is a helluva lot more versatile and athletic than James Jones. Webster has the potential to be more than a spot up 3 point streak shooter. THAT’s why I favor keeping him.

Al Thornton is a few years older (he’s turning 25 later this year, and Martell is turning 22 around the same time); he was old even for a 4th year senior. He’s good, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think Martell could easily get to an Al Thornton level this upcoming season, let alone when he is as old as Thornton.

Shooters with athleticism like Webster aren’t that common. He’s much further along than where Outlaw was.

I agree

A player i can see Martell potentially becoming similar to is non-other than NBA Champ Ray Allen. I said potentially because Martell has the potential he just needs to work at it

Whats your ring size? 2010

by Gregory Roy Aldridge on Jun 18, 2008 3:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Does he have an obsessive compulsive disorder?

If not he will never become Ray Allen, who has a mild form. That’s why he practices his shot endlessly until it feels natural, needs to have everything in order and repeatable to feel comfortable, park on the same spot, eat the same things, etc.

I suspect quite some ballers are like this, though e.g. Pierce is the opposite to Ray Allen. Arenas is known for repeating his shot thousands of times. Another famous example was Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who had a rather severe condition that in turn made him a great shooter who almost never missed a FT.

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

by Norsktroll on Jun 18, 2008 7:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah...

I’m just having a hard time thinking of many SFs that improved much 3 years into the league, whether young or old. WhenI’m bored, I look at the trajectory of players careers, how they evolved one year to the next and it always strikes me how early most guys hit their peak. And, even when they do improve, it’s not by as much as you might think. I know Webster will improve some, but how much? I suppose that the fact that it’s uncertain gives us something to talk about… Of course, I’m all for Webster becoming an All-Star and the Blazers winning 75 games a year for the next decade.

I love trades

How about Steve Blake and Frye for Jason Terry?

Terry, whose 30 years old, could spend the remaining 4 years on his contract starting next to Roy and no one would bat an eye. He’s a great shooter, (37.5% on 3s this year but 43.8% the year before) and can slash. I’m not too familiar with Terry’s game but he is a crafty veteran combo guard who could take the Blazers to the next level in 2009. I’m not sure I would do it (is Terry getting old fast?), but it is a nice quantity for quality trade that nets the Blazers a starting PG.

Dallas sheds money in the long run, gets younger, bigger, and fills out their rotation.

We could go for an all Seattle team!

Terry, Roy, Martell. Now we need to trade for Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson too!

Terry

Terry would be an interesting veteran to add, but I don’t know much about his salary situation.

by PoliSam on Jun 17, 2008 6:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Terry situation

As also a Mavs fan some more useful comments than what I provided below as a joke answer to tominhawaii:

I would consider Terry a valuable player and the best outside scorer besides Dirk on the team. He was perfect last season as a sixth man, but might just as well start. The other thing he shares with him is that he’s one of just a few guys on the roster who really wants to win. He is quick as hell (the nickname Jet has to come from something), but due to his size doesn’t drive that much to the basket – at least not anymore. I wouldn’t say he has begun to decline as last year’s numbers matched his career average (fewer assists and turnovers due to his role coming from the bench and less play on PG). He is very vocal / articulate on and off the floor (will probably become a media analyst after he retires, and he is perfect for the job), honest, and a pretty funny guy to be around. He truly subscribes to the NBA Cares motto and has established youth camps in Dallas, Seattle (hometown) and Arizona (college).

Concerning his salary he is owed $9,696,000; $9,575,000; $10,373,000; $11,158,000 in the next four years, and unlike with Stack that money is fully guaranteed. I would consider him a little overpaid, but definitely not by a huge margin.

by Norsktroll on Jun 17, 2008 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the info

Not likely that the Blazers take Terry, but interesting to consider.

by PoliSam on Jun 17, 2008 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Honestly..

This is the first “ridiculous trade” post that’s gotten me excited. I’d trade Martell+pick for Bass+pick anytime. Homeboy’s a bruiser and the exact Mo Lucas type we’re looking for. Huge untapped potential.

If we could snag the Jet for the same price, I’d be all over that shhh. Heck, I’d even take Terry for Martell+pick, if need be. I know he’ll only be around for but a few more years, but he’s got experience at the 1 and can help school our prospects into becoming champions. Personally, I’d rather it being him WANTING to come here and fill that role, but whatever, yo.

Actually the LAC would be better

partners, not only do they have the 7th pick which would be useful for us look at their roster:

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/la_clippers.htm

There is a lot of talk that Brand, Maggette and Livingston will all be gone/unavalible leaving them with only 6 players on the roster.

Kaman
Mobley
Thomas
Knight
Thorton
Powell

They could use the 7th and maybe a future 1st to grab Jack, Sergio, the 13th the 33rd and 36th and our 2009 1st unprotected. It would work well for both teams

by SpyderRyder on Jun 17, 2008 1:44 AM PDT reply actions

Sounds like there isn't enough NBA players for the 30 NBA teams

Shawn Kemp’s 50+ kids need to get old enough to be drafted to help fill out the rosters of these teams!

IF we did a trade such as what the smart PoliSam suggests, I’d rather ‘help out’ the Clippers over the Mavs. The Mavs have a better shot of making the playoffs, and we’d like them to drop out for our own selfish needs. If we give them some of our youngins, who are ALL good, it could make them make the playoffs. BUMP THAT, FOOL.

The Clippers were a borderline playoff team before, could be again, but isn’t horribly likely. We help them out, screw ‘em over a bit, we can sleep easier at night when we dream of the playoffs dancing in our heads.

Still, I’d hate to move Martell. I think he’s got sumthin’ good at our SF spot. But for the right deal, how could I say no?

I don’t think there is anyone in this draft I’d rather have over Martell, though—at least not out of the top 3. The way SpyderRyder calls it, Jack is the center of the deal and not Martell, and I think that could very well be possible… ESPECIALLY if the Clippers aren’t crazy about anyone available at #7. I’d be all over this deal like me on poop (I like poop).

Jack would start and do well for the Clippers. They’d get good 2nd round picks. We’d erase the Jack dillemma when Rudy is playing over him (and remove many people’s whipping boy; who will it be now?). We would have to get another 3rd string PG, though.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 17, 2008 1:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps we could get

Shawn Kemp the 37th to be included in the deal as well, but we would have to build in some type of clause where we would get the rights to Shawn Kemp the 115th as he will be the best of the bunch.

If we can move Jack and grab the 7th, we could grab Westbrook or Gordon and have Sergio move to the 3rd PG and have Blake 1a, Westy/Gordy 1b

Yeah?

by SpyderRyder on Jun 17, 2008 1:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Clippers

Yeah, another good potential trading partner… To me, doing a trade is about finding value, finding a team desperate enough to give you fair (or more than fair) value on what you send out. Seems like the Clippers could actually use Jack. There’s been so much talk of them looking for a PG trade, I don’t know if Jack is the guy they want, but if it is, that’s cool.

As a fan of both the Blazers and the Mavs I can't lose here ;-)

Well, I could if somehow the GMs and owners managed to make both teams worse. That would suck big time, blowing up any remaining championship hopes in Dallas with Dirk in his prime while destroying the future of the Blazers in one stroke. Kill me now.

On a sidenote, ironically swapping both teams as they stand – without bringing back all the expiring contracts in Dallas – would work if you take out Nowitzki’s contract (or Kidd’s):

http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=4650102

I can hear it right now: ESPN Insider Ric Bucher has learned that Mark Cuban traded teams with his buddy Paul Allen for cash considerations. Paul Allen is currently hiding in an undisclosed location from angry Blazers fans.

by Norsktroll on Jun 17, 2008 6:42 AM PDT reply actions

I'd do it

If they threw in a couple future second round draft picks. ;-)

If Boston is determine to rebuild and cut salary isn’t two mid lotto pics and the right salary filler decent. Maybe not enough but better than what most teams get in that situation. I would prefer that over the Chris Paul package.

I hope and figure that the Trail Blazers could have the best of both worlds. I’ve never seen a more bountiful 2nd round. Its conceivable that the team could deal both lotto picks and still find some nice players in the draft. Players like Orlando Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Kevin Jones, Will Barton are 1st rounders in most drafts even if its just based on hype and potential. Then you have some possible gems in such a deep draft like Machado, a couple guys that I personally like from Georgetown-their center Henry Sims and forward Hollis Tompson. Both high upside players that I would love to watch in the summer league. If PA were to ever buy into or trade into late first or second round now is the time. Give me Freeland, Diebler and four second rounders in the summer league with Rondo coaching.
