Point guard workout report
We had a nice group of guards down at the practice facility today, including Russell Westbrook and Ty Lawson. We don't get to watch the entire workout, but from what I saw, there were a couple of future starting NBA guards in attendance. Here's my write-up if you're interested.
To fill the word requirement, I thought I'd let you guys and gals know that after the podcast yesterday, Dave called to tell me he's actually rooting for the Lakers to win the Finals. True story, I swear!

I'm thinking Westbrook is who we are going to target
Sounds like Mr. Paul Allen was in attendance for this workout. If Paul Allen is in attendance, people are getting drafted! I wouldn’t be shocked if we got the French guy too. He sounds like an interesting prospect, and this is his 2nd workout with us in a short amount of tiime.
Sounds exciting. Good reporting gentlemen!

That was the biggest eye-opener of your report. KP needs to do whatever it takes (e.g. take Jack and the 13th pick and try to move up, etc) to get into position to draft Westbrook

Look at Boston
They have defenders and shooters. That’s how they got back from down 24: filled the court with defenders and shooters.
What do Posey, Eddie House, and the big 3 have in common? They’re all defenders and shooters.
And, because it’s the Spurs we’re emulating: Bowen, Udoka, etc.

Any Pritchardologists in the house?
If GMs play a “poker” prior to the draft with their comments on prospects, thenPritchard priobably has a “tell”. What is it? The number of times he uses the word “character” or “well schooled” when describing a player? A smirk when he talks about a player’s defense? Is he more likely to be critical of future selections??? I’m sure some one on this board is obsessed enough to look over his comments from past drafts and figure it out. Please do and report back soon.

I play a lot of poker
tells are over-rated and almost certain to ruin you (assuming you’re playing with pros, like you would be with GMs). Betting patterns are much more reliable indicators of what’s happening. So, in this case, workout patterns might help. For instance, when he brings someone in, who they’re up against, if they come back. I really don’t know much about the process, but try to think in terms of events rather than semiotic displays. KPs very aware that he’s being watched.

“Ty is just a power guard.”. I swear, we really are going to redefine the positions… If BRoy and Rudy flip flop at pg and sg, why not interchange a few other positions too. Someone did suggest LMA as a pg so maybe he & Ty could work together on becoming power guards… We’d eventually become the team no one could match up with because everyone can play 3 to 5 positions…

The Warriors when they beat the Mavericks
Last year. Their entire line-up was small forwards. They had some big small forwards and some small smal forwards, but they were all small forwards. They switched on every screen, cuz who cares? We’re all small forwards!
They were impossible to guard and tons of fun to watch. I don’t know if we’ll ever quite be that way, since GO is a center, and LA is a PF, and those are pretty set-in-stone. The other 3 spots are a bit more fun, since Roy straddles all 3, Rudy straddles all 3 to some degree, Jack is 2 positions, and there’s a good chance our draft pick would be too.
So, in general, I like the idea of a non PG SG SF PF C lineup, but by-and-large I don’t know if we have the team to do it with, since we’re so well-anchored in the post.

Nice info on the Westbrook tilt.
30/40 3pters huh? May be looking better and better. Also there is a rumor out there that someone in the OLive forum saw Eric Gordon in town, any word on a workout from Mr. EG? Could just be he is in town to talk to Nike or Adidas or if Greg is in town they are both from Indy and played AAU ball o n the same team.
I am starting to think that it will be either Gordon or Westbrook if we stay in the draft. Both would bring the athleticism, and from what you are seeing, Westbrook may be able to bring the shooting that KP has said that we need.

Westbrook. I've been telling you guys for months.
Again, I’m not expecting Nate to pencil him in as the starter. If KP decides to keep the pick, then he should go after the best player who ALSO has the skills we need, and Westbrook fits that description perfectly. He’ll have time to discover and grow into his role on team, whether it’s as a starter or reserve, and in the meantime, he already plays such great defense and is so athletic that Nate can bring him in right from the start to harass opposing guards into meek submission. I’m not saying other lottery picks don’t have skills too, but Westbrook has no downside like being under six feet tall, being a gunner, getting arrested, or goofing-off during workouts, either.

This is awful
After shooting well in Orlando and here for the pre-draft workout, what are witling Russell Westbrook detractors going to do? They have already attacked his shortcomings, like lockdown defense and remarkable athleticism. Great athletes never succeed in the NBA. Sure, he’s already good in transition and can distribute the ball in the halfcourt, is a gym rat with a nice wingspan and is very coachable and intelligent…but more important than that, which busts and players known for athleticism or defense that he is nothing like can he be guaranteed to become version 2 of/compared to next? We’ve already heard Tyrus Thomas, Corey Brewer, Fred Jones, Aaron McKie, Jarrett Jack…I’m predicting he becomes the next Qyntel Woods, with a little bit of Robin Lopez to him. And Paul Allen was there? Doesn’t he know Westbrook doesn’t belong anywhere near Blazers facilities? But seriously, though Westbrook wouldn’t be my top choice in this draft, I think he would be a good fit in Portland, and people say some ridiculous things about him from time to time.

The only knocks I've heard...
on Westbrook are that:
1) He’s not going to be available at pick 13
2) He has minimal experience playing PG as he was a SG in college
I don’t think either of those are unfair concerns to have.

True
Like I said, I was only half serious and he wouldn’t be my first choice, but there’s been some strange comparisons involving him. That’s what it was mostly about, the fact that because he’s most known for his defense and athleticism people have made it seem like those are his only strengths and he’ll never be more than just athletic. Shooting, ballhandling, and his slight build have been the most common concerns I’ve heard, and he has been shooting well in workouts, showed that he had improved his build, and was shown in college to have the ability to get assists in the halfcourt. I wouldn’t expect him to have handled the ball much with Darren Collison as a teammate, but that is still an area for improvement. He’s not expected to be available at 13, but I don’t think Portland is expected to retain that pick anyway.

Ummm...Let's see
6’3 Lankey SG with a questionable jumpshot and questionable ball handling. Those are real concerns. Picking a player like Westbrook is not bad at 13, but in the top 10, you want to make sure you pick a guy who can play a position in the NBA.

I agree
the risk factor is high for picking him, that’s why I said he wouldn’t be my first choice. But he’s been consistently improving in the areas he needs to, and people just seemed to have a perception of him as a one-dimensional player when he isn’t. His weaknesses are there, but often overblown in my opinion, judging by the players he’s been compared to. My only points were that there are a lot of things about him that make him obviously quite different than Tyrus Thomas, Corey Brewer, Jarret Jack, etc., that I doubt he’ll be the complete bust some have labeled him as, and that I think he, obviously on the condition of improvement, could fit well with the team. I agree with having those concerns, though I think he has shown he has the ability to improve upon those certain areas.

I would love Westbrook...
but i don’t think he’s going to be there if we stay pat at 13, i could see the Clippers (7), Bucks (8), Pacers (11) or even Kings (12) take him, even though I think Augustin would be a better fit for both the Pacers and Kings. Augustin wouldn’t be bad for us either, my only worry being that at 5’11, we’ll still be abused by bigger point guards.
And as far as Westbrook having a questionable ‘j’, i heard he hit 36 of 50 3-point shots in a drill he went through today. Granted its different in games, but thats still 72 percent from distance!

It's all about the heart.
Augustin will be in for an individual workout in a few days. Combined with Westbrook and Taylor, these three are likely the cream of what we can expect if we draft a PG. If only because we may be able to get them in the 8 – 10 range, and if would be very expensive to go into the 4-7. On the other hand, we see that in the real NBA, a lot of players taken in the 1 – 5 don’t do any better, or actually do worse, than those in 5 – 15. There’s certainly no science here. Westbrook shows up well. He has the size and athleticism, and like any 19 or 20 year old player, he needs time and seasoning to really blossom. But he just might. After all, take away all the hype, and with the exception of Rose, you have Mayo, Gordon, Bayless and Augustin. Mayo might be the one “lock” outside of Rose – but the other 3 each have their own issues. Augustin is size – not heart or scoring. Gordon and Bayless can score, but do they have Westbrooks length, size, and will to be a “lockdown defender”. Shooters are fine, but if they give up too many points on the other end – they don’t help all that much.
The intangibles that you can’t coach and can’t teach is heart and hard (called a motor) work in combination with athleticism. I don’t see that any of the other guards are more athletic than Westbrook, which leaves the issue of what kind of motor do they have? A lot of players who didn’t seem to be that athletic had great NBA careers because they had that motor – and those types make everyone better because they don’t have any quit in them.
by Eben Calder on Jun 13, 2008 6:45 AM PDT 0 recs
The hardest worker is a great trait too
GO, LMA, Roy and Jack just seem to have that drive. Some players make it on talent, but the special ones have the talent and the desire to work hard to get better.
I’m stoked that I honestly said the big three when referring to this trait.
If Westbrook is the hardest worker, he’s our man. BOOK IT!

Best Player Available...that's it!
Don’t go picking a point guard to pick a point guard….get the best guy regardless of position…if he happens to be a point guard, then great…if not I would rather get the more talented player or trade the pick.
by JasonT on Jun 13, 2008 9:52 AM PDT 0 recs
Or, best player for team
When KP answers questions about who he is going to pick his answers are generally more nuanced than the truism of best player available, as he says: the best player for the team, or something along those lines. It straddles the line of the two typical drafting strategies as obviously if he drafted a shooting guard they would have a hard time fulfilling potential behind Roy, Rudy and Webster. It would be interesting to see if a post or a small forward would be able to get the playing time necessary to develop. I could see the team drafting at one of those positions someone who had enormous potential though, such as Alexander or Greene.

I have always
thought that KP would draft best player available unless he sees someone he really likes and goes all out to get that player. I hope that Westbrook becomes the latter. If Russell didn’t play well enough at the workouts to have KP fall in love with his game then I ‘d be fine if we went with another guy. With his defense and quickness in the open court and now we find out that he might have a jumpshot…......damn, WE GOTTA GET THIS GUY.

Is flagging a new term for certain unnatural sex acts?
On second thought, maybe it’s not unnatural. I recall standing along the docks in a town in Sardina, waiting for the overnight ferry to Chiteaveccia (the port city for Rome). I came across this crowd of Italian guys all laughing and having a good time. When I walked up to see what they were watching, it was two dogs copulating. I’m wondering what’s so funny about it (or thinking these people are really, really bored) when I notice that both the big dog and the smaller dog were males. (Guess whom was doing whom.)
I still thought these guys must be bored, as it wasn’t really funny. (I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the smaller dog.) But it is an indication that the act may be natural, in a sense. I’ve also read about documented evidense of whales engaging in male on male rape. Damn, it’s a hard world out there. Who knew flagging was so widespread?
