Monta Ellis to Portland?

Hey as we make our rounds through the league looking for the next PG for our beloved Blazers, what about Monta Ellis? In 2007-08 he averaged 20.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, and a solid perimeter defender in the league.

While he is still very young at 21 years of age he has 3 years of NBA experience and has played 30+ minutes per game the last 2 seasons. So he comes with some solid experience but young enough to be coached by Nate and his staff.

He is a restricted free agent this summer and Golden State will have several other players that may need to be resigned before Monta. Perhaps a trade evolving Channing Frye (a mobile big man who can shoot) would fit into Don Nelson's system?

Perhaps you think he's too much of a scorer? I think he's young enough to realize the potential of what this Blazer team could be to put his scoring needs aside.  I think that this may be my best point of this post; won’t other players want to be part of the Blazers as it appears that this team is on the cusp of something very special?

Absolutely true, Dave

In fact, Ralph Barbieri, who co-hosts with Tom Tolbert a local sports talk show host here in the Bay Area, said recently that he wouldn’t trade Monta for Brandon. Tolbert wasn’t so sure about that, but I’m fairly sure that Barbieri’s view is widely shared by Golden State fans. Chris Mullin probably ranks Monta first in long-term importance to the team.

yep

As a South Bay resident, I sometimes tune into their show. Barbieri is a bit of a homer, but as local sports talk show hosts go, I think both of those guys are pretty level-headed, non-homerish and in tune with what the local teams actually believe (as opposed to spouting off their own misinformed opinions).

I’d definitely keep Brandon over Monta, but its much, much closer than most people realize. Ellis is a BALLER.

It's not that I think Monta is bad

I think he is very good, VERY good at one end of the court and worse than Travis Outlaw on the other end. That isn’t the sort of player who really, really helps you in the long run you need to compensate for him to negate his negative impact. It’s things to consider when you invest the money and keys to a franchise, and his offense overshadows his big negatives.

Of course, he shot over 60% for 1 or 2 months, which is insane for a scoring guard. He can penetrate and score on ANYONE. He is amazing at that.

But, he is dreadful on defense and undersized to boot. Roy does more to help a team win as he does a lot more than score… and if scoring was everything, Melo would be in the Finals right now.

Monta is very young, and could improve on those negatives. I could see him being super-loved right now but when he can’t get his team over the playoff hump, his negatives come to the forefront more… ala Melo.

And Baron? Baron is extremely talented, moreso than Monta overall. Baron could be THE BEST PG in the NBA if he wanted to be. He just doesn’t bring consistent effort or attitude over a 82 game season. He can do everything, and some games he does… and then the next game he moans his way to the bench. He did it twice against us, and that wasn’t the only two times he did it.

So don’t think I’m besmirching the good names and potential of Monta and Baron; I just think Roy is a better leader and all-round player. He’ll never score as much as those two, and I couldn’t care less.

Possibly

I think more than likely Warriors resign him before he is ever on the free agent market. The only way I see him changing teams is some other team offering him a max contract, which is kind of crazy. A sign and trade is possible, but probably not with the Blazers.

From what I've read...

... the evaluation in Europe is he’s expected to be the better player. He’s a tougher, more agressive version of his older brother. His outtside game is not as good, but he’s supposedly much better inside.

I keep telling folks that it’s still too early to judge the Gasol trade. If Marc comes over and is similar in quality to his brother, then it will be a successful trade for Memphis. They will have acquired a younger, less expensive version of Gasol, shed a large contract and picked up a young, big guard and a draft pick in the process.

That sounded kind of rude.

It’s a good trade, but honestly I think it’ll take a little more. I think if we can use our 2nd round draft picks plus our 13 to move up a little bit, we could realistically pull this trade off.

Also, I forgot we have KP in the above post. He tends to own people. So this trade is probably a little closer to being done than I first thought, but KP has to work some magika with the picks to make it happen.

Not sure the phrase, “solid perimeter defender” has been said with Mr. Ellis’s name too often, unless they are talking about the guy guarding him during the game.

I love Monta Ellis but I just don’t see how he would be a good fit with THIS team. Though, I do admit I go back and forth on the idea, and have since last season. I just don’t think that is the type of PG that the Blazers really need right now, I may be in the minority when I say I’d rather have Steve Blake and a developing PG over a big ego player.

He's Staying in GS

While the Warriors do have issues with re-signing players this off-season, they would not allow that to prevent them from re-signing Monta Ellis. He is 21 y/o and a 20ppg scorer. You don’t just let those players go… you build a franchise around them. The only way they would likely give up Ellis is if a trade made them an immediate competitor for a title. Could the Blazers offer them a trade that would put them in a position to be a title contender… probably not without giving up one of Roy, Aldridge or Oden. I am sure Golden State is still upset about losing Gilbert Arenas due to an unforeseen loophole in the CBA. They will not allow another talented young scorer leave as a restricted free agent.

The Dubs love 'im

He’s a huge fan favorite, very young, lots of potential, etc etc. I don’t see any way they let him go without getting a star back. He’ll be expensive, but he’ll stay with them.

Now let’s say he WAS available… he’s a really bad defender. Really bad. Bad bad. He’s quick and athletic, should be better, but he is bad. Bad bad.

He also isn’t a very good dribbler for a short guard. Nor a good passer.

He is an amazing scorer who can get into the lane and finish on anyone. He can do that with floaters, lay ups, dunks, pull ups, all of dat. He is not a good 3 point shooter. He is definitely not a PG and only plays it because of his height.

I think he will always be a dynamic scorer who his own fans will love, and he’ll always have admirers, but I think he is a better version of Leandro Barbosa. Great scorer, undersized shooting guard, no defense. Great on a highlight reel, he has lots of years left to improve, but I think he’ll always be a player you gotta compensate for.

Just the fact that most fans of other teams think he is actually available shows he is still underrated overall (though I’d say his lovers overrate him some, but what he does well he does VERY well). I bet you could get anyone else on the Warriors, for a lot less, than Monta Ellis.

Pietrus is a good defender, but everything else about him is extremely sporadic. A change of scenery would do him well I think, as his minutes get yanked around a lot by Nelson. As does his role. I do not think he is better than Martell Webster or Outlaw, and not nearly as dependable as James Jones. So, I don’t think he’s worth getting. He is the French Michael Jordan though, so he’s got that going for him.

I’d classify Pietrus as the ‘Eternally Frustrating’ player that I worried Outlaw would be. Every once in a while he shows something that makes you go “MAN, why can’t he do that more often? We know he can! Maybe if…” but that if never comes. Or, it usually doesn’t come.

Did Pietrus take the 1 year deal so he can get out of Oakland? I think he’d be really useful on another team, and could do well with more (consistent) minutes. I also classify him as a player outsiders value more than fans of his own team, because they see what he does wrong more than we do.

I agree,

although I think the Warriors system makes Ellis look worse on defense than he actually is. It’s not like he can funnel his man to Tyson Chandler like Chris Paul can. He get’s almost no help on defense, and I think that makes it really hard for a little guy like him to defend well in the NBA.

Even so, I would still trade our backcourt (Roy, Blake) for the Warriors backcourt (Ellis, Davis) any day.

If somebody hits you with an object you should beat the hell out of them.-Charles Barkley

by Winchester on Jun 12, 2008 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Eeks

I wouldn’t trade Roy for either one of them, or both of them, or whatever combo you decide. I think Roy has shown at a very early age that he WINS. You can’t depend on Davis at all, and Monta is a one way player.

Roy does EVERYTHING, and can be counted on. His intangibles and 4th quarter clutchness alone have won us a lot more games than we would have with those two as our backcourt.

His age, attitude, all-round game, his complete BLAZER-NESS… I couldn’t imagine trading him for anyone. While I could see the argument for a Chris Paul or sumthin, a Baron Davis and Monta Ellis?! Eeks! You must think Roy is antisemitic or sumthin’.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 12, 2008 2:29 AM PDT up reply actions

However

I’ll grant you the Warriors overall defense doesn’t help anyone look good; Monta’s quickness and athleticism should enable him to keep up with his enemy and he doesn’t. He always looked really bad playing defense to me, beyond the ‘no help’ sort of bad… or the Steve Blake “trying but athletically overmatched” kind.

It’s almost like he wasn’t even there, some games I watched. Like he didn’t even impede his opponent at all, like it was a video game and the other player could just go through his character because of bad collision coding (or whatever the proper wording would be, I ain’t no ‘puter hacker).

I’m sure having an Oden would help make most anyone look like a better defender, but I’m just wary of athletic marvels who only seem to use their athleticism on one end of the court.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 12, 2008 2:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Roy has shown at a very early age that he WINS?

Ellis is only 22 and is the only untouchable player on the Warriors roster, a team that won seven more games than we did last year. If it’s about winning at a young age then Brandon Roy gets beat. Golden State ranked 5th at the PG position and 11th at SG. Portland Ranked 29th at PG and 4th at SG. That makes Golden State the 6th best backcourt in the NBA while Portland ranks 15th.

By the way, Monta Ellis ranks higher than Roy in PPG, RPG, SPG, BPG, FG%, FT%, and TS%.

I love the Blazers, but it would be really hard to argue (I’m sure someone will try) that we have a better backcourt than the Warriors.

If somebody hits you with an object you should beat the hell out of them.-Charles Barkley

by Winchester on Jun 12, 2008 4:55 AM PDT up reply actions

A few thoughts

And let me preface them with saying that I don’t think Portland has a better backcourt than Golden State. That doesn’t necessarily mean I’d trade our backcourt for theirs, though, cuz I don’t think that Dizzle and Ellis would mesh well with GO and LMA—or Nate for that matter. Just my opinion.

1) Brandon Roy is the unquestioned leader of a team that grossly overachieved this year. I consider this year a success for the Blazers. Ellis was a supporting player on a team that was expected to make the playoffs and didn’t (admittedly because of a historically tough conference). I consider this year a failure for the Warriors, and I think you’d be hard-pressed to find too many Warriors fans who would consider it a success. So how is it that you consider team success a feather in Ellis’ cap? Everything is relative.

2) Where did you get these rankings from? If they appeared somewhere above in the thread, I didn’t see them, but sorry if I overlooked them. Fifth-best at what?

3) When you’re comparing two players across two such disparate systems as Golden State’s and Portland’s, the raw per-game numbers don’t mean that much. The Warriors played at the second-fastest pace in the league; the Blazers played at the second-slowest. If you adjust for pace (and unfortunately I can’t find any pace-adjusted individual statistics online - anybody know where to find them?) I’m quite certain that Roy’s 19.1 PPG substantially outweighs Ellis’ 20.2 PPG. Roy’s total rebound percentage is better (percentage of overall missed shots rebounded by X player while he was on the floor) than that of Ellis. Monta’s steal percentage is slightly better than Roy’s, 1.5% to 1.0%, but I’d chalk that up more to the W’s gambling, pressing style of defense (compared to the Blazers, who do…well…neither of those things) than to him being a superior swiper to Roy. Mentioning blocks per game here is a red herring and irrelevant, as neither player accrues sufficient blocks for it to matter. And admittedly Ellis shot a better percentage from the charity stripe than Roy, but it’s 76.7% to 75.3%, barely a difference - and that’s just from last season. Roy is the superior shooter when we compare their brief careers.

Monta is the superior scorer. He shoots a higher percentage from the field and his true shooting percentage is higher to boot. Those aren’t pace-inflated numbers. But you left out that his turnover rate is higher, his usage rate is lower, and he racks up fewer assists on a per-possession and per-game basis than Roy. Considering that a huge part of Roy’s role for the Blazers is as a distributor and not just a scorer, those numbers are both very relevant and very impressive.

Though I gotta say, as I was researching this post, I gained a whole new respect for Ellis’ game. Dude’s got some impressive stats.

by BlazersOrBust on Jun 12, 2008 6:21 AM PDT up reply actions

The rankings...

The rankings are purely PER differential. I’m not a fan of this stat. If you don’t believe in PER, then you absolutely shouldn’t believe in PER differential. Even if you believe in PER, PER differential adds an additional flaw in that positions on defense are measured poorly on 82games.com.

I agree that Roy is significantly better than Monta right now. I think Monta’s a good player, but he’s not a great fit on this team for a lot of the reasons Mortimer pointed out. Realistically, a superior Blake is our ideal point guard, and those are actually pretty rare. Calderon plays worse defense than Blake, for example. Blake in my opinion shouldn’t be discounted simply because he doesn’t have a big name. If we’re going to throw out trade rumors, make sure the player fits the team.

by poster on Jun 12, 2008 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

You make some great points.

I didn’t do a ton of research on him, but my eyeballs tell me what my eyeballs tell me. The assists thing is a little deceiving as the Warriors system doesn’t allow for a lot of assists. One man fast breaks, shooting threes before the defense is set , and a lack of a true big down in the post really limits the amount of assists.

If somebody hits you with an object you should beat the hell out of them.-Charles Barkley

by Winchester on Jun 12, 2008 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Who huh wha?

I’d say the Warriors system creates a ton more assists than a big man system would. When we pass it into LMA and let him work and he scores, usually no one gets the assist.

With the Warriors, the run and shoot quick, enabling whoever passed last to get the assist.

If you’re talking about having an Oden who can jump up and dunk the ball, that’ll help Roy get a lot more assists. That is true. But if you’re letting a big man work (ala Duncan and the Spurs, who never have that many assists as a team) no one gets the assist and everyone goes home sad.

So, I think it is the complete opposite of what you are saying. You run fast, shoot quick, assists go up. They move and spread out, and don’t do one on one all day like, say, the Mavs (which also cuts down on team assists).

I wouldn’t really hold a lack of assists against Monta because Baron is their PG and Monta is only a shooting guard. He’s not a playmaker so it isn’t his role to distribute.

I'm surprised

I thought it would be where Denver would be, because quicker shots/faster pace = more assists for your stats…

Now, this graph doesn’t take into account PER GAME totals, right? Just how good they are at getting assists per how many FGs they made? Because I don’t think its outlandish to say that systems like the Nuggets or Warriors inflate your per game stats sumthin’ fierce, including more assists.

(Versus our slow Blazer team, where you just don’t get as many possessions to get assists)

And if I’m the smartest guy around, I feel sorry for everyone because I am an idiot.

Again, I think that you think I dislike Monta, and I don’t. I just generally don’t prefer undersized scoring 2-guards forced to play point because of their size. Lets say Monta’s ceiling is the best version of this sort of player, Allen Iverson (and I dunno if Monta can be as good of a playmaker as AI). I don’t think Allen Iverson wins or is a player that is useful on both ends, and Roy’s style does.

Monta is perfect for Nelly-ball, and he is fun to watch.

Even going by the graph, there doesn’t seem to be a heavy correlation between teams with great big mans and assists, except for PHX and Utah who both do pick and roll till your eyes bleed (and so will we I am sure).

I certainly don’t know everything, just what I see. I’m fully okay with being wrong.

By the way, you seen this Tyrus Thomas kid?! We are sucka booty phoos for drafting LMA, and if we don’t move LMA and Roy for Ben Gordon and Nocioni (we don’t deserve Tyrus because we had our chance) we will all regret it till the day we die by the hands of a Tyrus Thomas dunk.
