Most blaze up with mr Noah

I know im going to get "torched" on this one but the  nba dosent care about its players smoking mary jane!!  they only address it because of the public outrage!!!  we know its illegal and ill moral , we know that it will be legal and probably still ilmoral one day,  we "know "that at least   70% percent of the league blazes up.. and id venture to say that the only blazer i would bet my life on not smoking pot would be travis,,,yes even brandon and lamarcus!! dont be mad or upset  the truth hurts...I think chris bosch gets lubed before he does after game interviews..the players are given advance notice of  drug test except for rookies who get them randomly  ,,  ..The Players union protested when mr Canzono made the pact with damon..because they didnt want their superstars to have to stand up to that ... they were scared that mj and barkley  would have to figure out a "reason" why they couldnt  do the same...didnt they find over a pound of bud in Rpbert Parrish's trunk...he did not do one day in jail!!!!,,,  ...and oh yes greg has seen a few rolling papers in his time i bet lol  it really dosent matter just leave it all on the floor I guess

I wrote this to take some of the pressure off that  "lets go L*ker post

R U a grammar policeman?

Please don’t write something unless you have at least a slight idea how to spell “Are” and “you”.

Sorry, but the irony of going after someone’s grammar while using R U was just too much for me to pass on.

Somehow, Lyfe has managed to post here for a long time without being called down for his grammar by the site owner. I didn’t notice anything in the site rules about grammar, but I did see something in there about treating others with respect.

So I put it in the vernacular of the text messager. Now excuse me, I gotta go take my morning bong hit. And by the way, I bet Travis has at least taken a few puffs now and then, just to see what it’s like. Brandon might have smoked in high school but he probably gave it up in college. I agree that many, maybe even most, have smoked before

but I disagree with it being “immoral.” It is illegal here, though possession of under an ounce isn’t a big deal in Oregon. The fact that it is illegal lends a certain stigma, but the morality of it is purely subjective. I wouldn’t call it immoral personally.

by Junior Del Norte on Jun 1, 2008 8:22 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Many?

I have no idea how many players smoke pot and neither do any of us. I must confess that I do suspect it occasionally whenever a player looks or acts like they may be stoned, but that’s hardly proof.

I remember reading about how Walton “needed” to light up after a game because that was the only way he could wind down after a game. That is actually a somewhat plausible explanation since you hear all these stories about players being out all night after games…. doesn’t make it right, though.

We all know that NBA cracks down on it from an image standpoint. Whether they view it as a gateway drug, something that is truly harmful to the players, or a possible avenue for them to get extorted, I don’t know.

In and of itself, it is what it is… a minor crime. I think they’d be nuts to do it (smoking pot is bad for your health, bad for your lungs, and it can sap your motivation – not compatible with a long NBA career IMHO).

It's true

Over half the adults in the US have smoked pot at some point in their lives and it’s stupid to think that NBA players are the exception.

by robrun2 on Jun 1, 2008 9:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Quite an assumption

Yes its plausible that over half the adults in the US have smoked pot, and its quite possible that over 1/2 the players in the NBA tried weed in their high school or college days.

But it’s a major and ignorant assumption to think that over 1/2 of NBA players currently smoke marijuana. These guys are pro athletes on multi-million dollar contracts, so the NBA is hardly your perfect sample of the US adult population, i.e. they are not a good representation of the US adult population. For you to infer otherwise, with absolutely no relevant statistical evidence, tells me you’re most probably on the whacky tobbacy.

I remember reading an article back when

where a basketball player made a claim that 80-90% of basketball players smoke pot. I think it came out during that darned damon debacle.

I’m to lazy to try to find it again. I do question whether any of our current blazers do it though. I’d certainly hope not. It slows the reflexes and I want our guys as sharp as they can be.

Let's not throw around a term like "immoral" ...

which I presume you mean.

That word belongs in discussions about what is “right” or “wrong”, or, if you prefer, what is “good” and what is “evil”. I do believe there are things that can be categorized as such, but the use of marijuana is not one of them.

Marijuana usage might, under some circumstances, such as when publicly representing a professional sports team (and being paid lots of money to do so), be foolish, but it is not an act that should be discussed in the realm of morality.

To claim that smoking marijuana is immoral is, itself, quite foolish, and to deprive an adult individual of the human right to pursue happiness through, for example, the use of marijuana, whether foolish or not, while that individual is not harming anyone else is, itself, immoral.

These are my opinions and I approve them.

by CatMan2 on Jun 1, 2008 11:27 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Don't laws define what is right/wrong in a society?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines moral as (first definiation):

1 a: of or relating to principles of right and wrong in behavior : ethical b: expressing or teaching a conception of right behavior c: conforming to a standard of right behavior d: sanctioned by or operative on one’s conscience or ethical judgment e: capable of right and wrong action

Hasn’t our society by virtue of the various laws punishing the possession/usage of marijuna deemed it to be wrong or immoral?

by tingeyga on Jun 2, 2008 6:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm neither a lawyer nor a preacher

But I don’t think you can equate law with morality. To me, there seem to be many things that are illegal which are not immoral, while there all also many things that are immoral yet not illegal. I won’t bother enumerating a lot of examples of these. If you can’t think of any on your own, I don’t think there’s much we can discuss. Except, perhaps, the Trail Blazers.

Pot vs. Pills vs. Tobacco vs. Alcohol

Personally, all are on equal playing field for me.

I see Meds and prescription pills as a HUGE issue in our society. Yet, they will not be deemed illegal because of the financial support their lobby’s give to politicians. It is legal for people to use their doctors to get addicted and abuse pills, but immoral to smoke pot?

I see people smoking cigarettes in their cars with their windows up and young children strapped in the back seat breathing second hand smoke. My mom had cancer (not lung) and it is a devastating disease and DIRECTLY tied to second hand smoke. Cigarettes are legal. Is this immoral because of the youth> Yest in my book. Then those smokers LITTER their butts out the window? Is that OKAY… NO.

Alcohol is legal. Pot is not. Drunk driving is much more a realistic public danger than pot heads sitting around ordering pizza. We have laws that actually entice drinkers to drive. The .08 limit is so much easier to hit than anyone realizes, and once a person has one drink they are technically IMPAIRED and all decisions after that are affected. They are taunted by this .08 limit to drive home thinking “oh, I’m not that drunk” but likely are riding at or above “legal limit”. Anyone who has driven after 2 or 3 beers at a happy hour after work was most likely at or above the limit.

I personally know 3 people who have been killed in separate instances from drunk drivers.

I don’t know anyone killed by an instance related to smoking herb.

Marley is one of my favorite musicians and he smoked weed like I drink water. Snoop dizzle also hits the weed like a builder hits nails, just a couple musical legends inspired by mary jane. Then you have someone like Ozzy Osbourne, who was a raging coke head. His music was not my cup of tea but he was popular to many. Its all in the eyes of the beholder. In general, I like music written by stoners more than music by cokeheads, but thats mostly because I really like reggae…

Yes seriously

And no, not intentionally. I’m dead serious in both cases. I never cared much for Snoop, though, his overall body of work seems insignificant when compared to some of his contemporaries, like Ice Cube, who I feel I would probably take over Lou Reed and the Stones.

But, yes, absolutely, I think the stones are better than Marley and that Lou Reed is better than snoop.

BLZRS FRVR

by nightbluefruit on Jun 3, 2008 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please clarify

When you say that the Stones are better than Marley, do you just mean that you like them better?

One can reasonably argue that X is more commercially successful than Y, or that X is more influential than Y, or that more people seem to like X than Y, or that the music of X more nearly exemplifies Western musical traditions than Y. You can even make a verifiable claim that X is technically a better musician than Y.

But there is no way to prove that X is “better” than Y. That is too vague a statement, and ultimately It is simply a matter of taste.

by CatMan2 on Jun 3, 2008 8:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

To me, personally, the Stones are entirely underrated as songwriters and musicians. I feel like I could write a thousand pages about the larger, universal significance of their music. With Marley, it’s pretty much already been put out there: the universal applications are more or less transparent.

Both are incredible musicians. It’s simply the fact that the Stones are (incorrectly) labeled as only historically significant while Marley already has the credit for being more illuminating in a spiritual sense.

But you’re absolutely correct about the nature of aesthetics: even when we disagree it’s only an appearance, we’re always really agreeing.

Some random names of writers who I know have used it (but you’re just going to have to trust me on this since I’m not gonna spend anymore time on this silly argument) are Ken Kesey, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer, Aldus Huxley.

by CatMan2 on Jun 2, 2008 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah,

But calling Kerouac a pothead is like calling Bob Marley an alcoholic because a guy I know saw him once drinking a beer near central park.

Plenty of authors have tried weed, I’m talking about authors defined by weed. Meanwhile, alcoholics like Joyce, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner et. al. are undeniably superior to whatever pot-defined author you could drum up.

The recurring off-season pot debate continues...

I mentioned in a previous pot-related fanpost about a month ago that we would probably have at least two more pot-related fanposts the season starts back up, but so far it looks like we’re gonna hit that mark by summer league.

As I’ve said before (probably in one of lyfe’s diaries this time last year), I don’t care if these guys are blazing every now and then, though I would prefer it if our guys don’t do it during the regular season. We are reminded frequently that the NBA is a business, and these guys know they could lose millions of dollars if their performance slips. Because of this, I think most of them probably use good judgement regarding pot.

And for those who say that pot is less harmful with less residual after-effects, all I can say is that everyone must be wired differently because I’ve had the exact opposite experience. I’ve had times when pot has left me mentally and energetically worthless for several days after smoking it, so I hope that if there are any guys like me on the team they refrain from hitting the stuff during the season.

Because of the unfortunate association of the term “blaze” with pot culture, we should immediately adopt the habit of referring to the Portland team as simply the “Trail”. It still has the old historical connection, but it doesn’t shout out 4:20.

We can chant “Hail the Trail!”. Or “Trail don’t fail me now!”

Plus, it’s not just about Portland anymore. Hey, I live in Eugene. They should call the team the “Oregon Trail”. Catchy, no?

hey bocious i had to do my job lol… its extremely funny instead of reading and reacting to what i wrote ..blazer edgers went off the deep end on the grammar and the use of the word immoral..god bless america…and it would seem as if they would respect the millions and they do ..you dont hear about meth or crack bust..its always weed and alcohol.and it always will be.. because they are the lesser of all the evils. until you have a testing system somewhat like the olympics system in place..its all rhetoric and figure heading..just blowing smoke so to speak..we really need baseball and football here because we have no where to burn this energy off…weed its just weed.. i mean were talking about weed here people…dont judge me i want the same thing you do…rings and lots of them..lots..we just have different points of views thats all my friends..and different ways of expressing them

if it can be conceived it can be achieved

Now is not the time to lose heart

No, you bravely exposed this threat to our way of life, and now we need to ensure that the evil herb and those who abuse are eliminated. Zero tolerance is the only way! If we have to trade away Roy, Aldridge, and Oden, well, it’ll be for the best. I know I speak for everyone when I say that we don’t care about titles and rings and winning records. What’s important is towing the line. We can only respect those who have meticulously studied the laws of our great nation and state (and county and city or township) so that they will never even inadvertently transgress them. Let us now join together and wack this pernicious weed!

Hail the Trail!

Wack your own pernicious weed, CatMan

Personally, I love it when the Blazers light it up on the court and blow smoke at the opposition.

Go Blazers!

Leave the weed, smoke the enemy!

Yeah, I know.

Here are a few thoughts:

-If there was an award for the best rabble-rouser, you would definitely be in the running.

-I don’t think people should worry about grammar unless they truly can’t understand what the person is trying to communicate. Everyone has different strengths, and pointing out someone’s grammar just for the sake of public shaming is bad form.

-I think our players have demonstrated the character to exercise good judgment in this matter, so I’m not really concerned with it. If one of them gets caught smoking weed in the off-season, let me say now that I will not hold it against them. If it becomes a pattern, then I probably will.

-Sometimes the pot discussion starts to edge over into a political discussion. There are some great websites that I visit regularly for political discussion, but this isn’t one of them. Can we please keep this discussion about pot in basketball and not expand it into a public policy discussion? I’m not saying you’re doing this, lyfe; I’m just throwing it out there for everyone.

bocius for president in 2012

I feel you man and i never try to rabble- rouse (i”m incorporating that into my vocabulary) i just seem to be a lightning rod I cant help it… and i agree with you on the grammar…I just don’t understand how it fits in,,, this is not a Yale think tank but if having a superior grasp of the English language turns me into super fan then i will enhance my education

if it can be conceived it can be achieved

Haha

Thanks man. How about instead of best rabble-rouser, you can be biggest lightning rod. :D

Okay, okay, I repent!

(sob) You’ve hurt my feeling, and it’s the only one I’ve got!

In retrospect it’s clear that I miscalculated. By thrashing from the anarchic left to the fascist right I’ve only succeeded in alienating everybody.

Can’t we all just get along?

Ah, man...

Even your cats have their backs to you. If you need a friend… get a dog.

Just kidding. You’re all right for a cat man.

of course we can get along

starting in october

if it can be conceived it can be achieved

True that.

This is the time of year when we all argue over pointless nothings. There’ll be a little unity during Summer League, and then we’ll go back to arguing until October.
