Finding a compliment to Roy; Barbosa
compliments Roy
helps out our terrible transition game
defends other PG's (could be a good defender if he played for Nate and was pushed)
great shooter (down year last year)
doesn't need or want the ball in the half court
Fits to make us a much better team on the break (Barbosa - Aldridge - Webster on the transition game flying down the court, while Roy spots up and Oden comes flying on the "secondary break") If there's nothing easy available (75% of the time) he hands it to Roy who starts the offense. The fact is we need to take advantage of Lamarcus' killer speed in the open court and can get a ton of easy points off of it, he's faster than almost any big guys and guards won't stand in front of him. Barbosa won't hurt our half-court game because he won't run the offense and will be a shooter/backdoor slasher.
And Rudy and Sergio fit great in the "white unit" off the bench as a change of pace.
Supposedly Nate really wanted him during the Seattle draft but was overruled by management.
Would you guys want him here? What would you be willing to give up to get him? He's lightning quick and would compliment Roy in the backcourt as a dynamite shooter who is lightning quick but not a real PG I suppose. He does play good defense (as a pesky steals guy), has a long wingspan, and can initiate the break decently. It seems that the suns might be willing to move him as he doesn't exactly fit perfectly with Shaq over there.
Anyways, I was thinking with Barbosa his duty would just be to catch the outlet and look for ways to score within the first 8 or so seconds of the shot clock (with Lamarcus and Brandon screaming down the floor, Brandon spotting up for three in the secondary break and Greg ready to flush it at full steam in the secondary break), then if nothing came easy he would hand it to Roy and let him create in the half court and basically become a shooter. I think he could handle that and Roy would still get to play his smooth and slowed down game as we utilize his skills as a rebounder (on D) while Lamarcus gets to scream down the court and use his (painfully neglected) open court speed for his size.
I'd probably be willing to trade Jack and Outlaw for him, maybe even throw in the 13th pick, but let's assume Jack and Outlaw together is enough...
I would honestly like to find a way to move Blake for another draft pick or something if that went down, but I find this rotation absolutely great as far as potential, experience, and complimentary skills.
A lot of suns fans are willing to look at deals that move him as he may not fit their offense and they need to re-tool a bit. Many have said Outlaw/Jack/#13 would be enough, but I think that's too much.
Barbosa/Rodriguez/Koponen
Roy/Fernandez/Bryce Taylor
Webster/Jones/Batum
Aldridge/Frye/Mcroberts
Oden/Pryzbilla/Freeland
My dream fit wish list for the summer:
1. Andre Iguodala
2. Monta Ellis
3. Leandro Barbosa
4. Andre Miller
5. Nicholas Batum
Here's a hypothetical deal I put on realgm and fan responses to it:

Barbosa wants out
Check out this article.
http://azsportshub.com/2008/05/22/does-leandro-barbosa-wants-out-of-phoenix/Ba
I first mentioned this as a possiblity in late Feb.
When the Shaq trade went down, I could see the writing on the wall. If you look at Phoenix’s roster, the ONLY asset that they have to trade is Barbosa. I think that they will be looking for an athletic SF to spell and replace Grant Hill in 2 years. They also need a half court PG, or a combo guard—-think Jack.
A trade of Outlaw and Jack for Barbosa would work after July 1. Both Outlaw and Barbosa will no longer be BYP.
I do differ slightly. With a move for Barbosa would in my opinion require another move for defensive help. Maybe Webster is the defender that Nate likes, but I think that a move for a standout defensive SF would have to be made. I’m thinking Battier, but I’m not convinced that Houston lets him go. Any others? I’ve heard Posey, but Boston’s keeping him.
Agreed
Defense is where we become weak and we’d need to plug that hole if we trade Webster to get Barbosa.

Barbosa is nice
but so is every other player that suited up next to Nash in the suns system. He really isnt a point guard and appears like he needs to play in an uber up tempo system. I dont think he is the answer here….
RUDY > MJ
Just like...
James Jones
It’s not like he’ll lose all his speed, shooting ability, and ability to finish in Portland where he’ll be the beneficiary of more double teams (oden, aldridge, and roy).

I love Barbosa but
Hes not really a pg. He has some glaring weaknesses and bc of this D’antoni didn’t have him in the starting lineup regularly.
Complementary guard
I’ll say it again. Portland should be looking for a complementary player next to Roy. If that is a pure PG, fine. If that is a supreme 3 pt shooter, great. Getting hung up on PG and SG is just pointless. Roy will have the ball a ton. He just needs some help bringing the ball up for 1/2 the game.
Barbosa plays well without the ball and that is key. He can help bring it up, shoot 3’s and is pretty fast. He may or may not be able to stay with the fast PG’s, but they would have to defend him too.
Rolling with Leandro
great set of articles from TrueHoop
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop?tag=leandro+barbosa
you will have to scroll down a bit as the first article is from this years playoffs, but the rest is gold
I like the idea of landing Leandro if we only have to give up Jack and the 13. I think we should wait on Outlaw as Quick has seen a change in his desire and I would like to see how it plays out.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
really interesting read
doesn’t really reveal if Nate liked him or not, but I got the impression (from somewhere else) that he did a lot

true
I was just hoping it might get people jazzed up on leandro as well as shed some insight on pre draft workouts in general. I dont think the articles ever mentioned Nate; just the sonics in general.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
I read allo f them
real interesting to hear about some teams being nice, some people being rude, some things being cheap (Memphis) and how much pressure goes into those things in general. Some times i forget that these teams/players/agents have personalities.

Interesting insight into the drafting process.

not going to happen
i would love to have calderon also but i think its a pipe dream
toronto knows this guys potential and they have a decent team especially in the eastern conference so i dont think that they are parting with jose for anything less than a allstar
but i wouldnt doubt if kp has something up his sleve
barbosa
stan over at bright side of the sun mentioned to me before the playoffs started that barbosa might be on the way out.
a number of media members that i asked during the season said they thought barbosa would be an all star within 3 years.
the key as you mentioned on the realgm post is his contract.
i would do the trade you laid out in a heartbeat but i’m not sure that would get it done. it’s impossible to know though.
great thread.

Sorry annthefan
When commenting on an Outlaw trade, I’m inclined to post #25 in honor of you. I’d be very sorry to see Travis go.
Wow
That is a bad photo. Roy looks like he’s drunk and Outlaw is trying to hold him back from starting a fight.
Roy, “What did he say? I’m gonna kick his butt.”
Travis, “He didn’t say anything, it’s just a photo of Bill Walton. I’m taking you home.”
What's love got to do, got to do with it?

That photo is from the game where Brandon had to go back to the locker room to puke because he was sick.
He’d just made a basket under a lot of duress and gotten roughed up. In the photo they were on their way back to the other end of the court. I think it was in the 3rd quarter but I don’t remember now who they were playing. I love this photo.

Awe
Thats nice then. I always think players are faking it when they have the flu. Each time I have the flu, bad things happen to my plumbing. No way in heck, would I run up and down a basketball court, in white shorts, with an audience, if I had the flu.

I mentioned in another thread that your new avatar
looks like the south end of Carlos going north. Sorry Carlos. Instead it’s the holy toast.

Barbosa maybe but
keep TO. i would be content if the PTB didn’t execute any trades this off-season, but i think this is a prime time to acquire talent if they can. don’t trade TO, though, because he is talent. trade Jack, Frye, #13. trade Oden, if you must. no wait, wait; i take that back.
I know, I know. It's a terrible dilemma. But no, I realize Oden stays. So do Roy and Aldridge.
Truthfully, I don’t want anyone to go. But Travis is at the top of my list as a keeper after those three.

Massive over-valuation
Guys, I like Travis as much as the next guy, but Jack/Travis for Barbosa would be a no-brainer. (Disclaimer: I haven’t looked at the salary structure, which would be important.) Barbosa is easily the best 6th man in the league – I discount Ginobli, who is basically a starter – and has been for several years. We’d be trading two role players, one with potential, for the best 6th man in the league?
I don’t think we could get Phoenix to make this trade without the #13th, and I’m not sure they’d do it even with the pick. That’s how one-sided this trade is.

Not Barbosa
But a complimentary guard who has similar skills as Leandro to offset Roy is the right Idea (Harris, Westbrook, etc)
D'antoni wants him back. Hard.
Word is that Barbosa does want out but that D’antoni wants him in NY the way Steve Francis wants Cuttino Mobley. That is, hard and fast.
Not that the Knicks would be able to offer much in the way of quality personnel in a trade, but we know what Phoenix likes best: $. Maybe best not to get in a bidding war with Dolan.
BLZRS FRVR
all new york has
is big contracts really. Unless they offer David Lee and the #6 or something, which would be ludicrous there’s really nothing else Phoenix would want.

Only if cheap
that means No Outlaw or Webster ( and no Blake either).
Pros :
good 3 pt shooter with the feet set,
one man fast break + Ok decision making in the fast break.
hard worker
Cons :
Not a good defender, has the tools but no the IQ.
Low offensive IQ as well.
Plays way worse against top teams compared to weak teams.
He’s a great kid and still has a lot of potential but I don’t think it’s a good fit. I want smart hardworking players. He works very hard but it’s not smart ( on the court).
ps. I am brazilian, so if I were biased I’d be pro LB.
Not sure if it's the best
The argentineans are pretty good on it too. Barbecue and flopping are the only thing they’re good at.
It sounds to me
Like Barbosa is the same exact player as Rudy, i mean that could be good if you want two of the same player, but it seems a little redundant. Why not get a Pg who can help us with Defense and more play making + fast break.
by raging WebTed on Jun 2, 2008 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions
because you now have a guard unit
That just doesn’t weaken.
Blake is the weakest link. that’s awesome considering he’d be the fourth player in the game.
