Trade Machine Insanity
This is the time of year there are a lot of trade scenarios floated on the net, many of which involve teams trading their 10th or 11th player and a middling pick for another team's second or third best performer. Obviously, these kind of deals just don't happen (Gasol trade aside).
Still, Kevin Pritchard is crafty, and in each of the last two drafts has managed to make something happen to improve the team. This past year, it was addition by subtraction, dumping Randolph for Frye, and giving the team cap room in 2009. What might we expect this June?
As a start, looking at 82games.com's "By Position" production confirms that point guard is the position where the team has the biggest need, with small forward and center being the other (less dire) negative areas.
Let's assume the center spot is covered.
Pritchard is a magician, but the Blazers are not going to be able to pick up someone like Caron Butler, Mike Miller, or Luol Deng to come in and play the small forward spot (well, maybe Miller if the Blazers were willing to take on Cardinal's contract for Raef's expiring deal and Webster, which isn't likely to happen with all the 2009 cap space talk.). I expect Martell Webster to get one more year to prove he's the starting power forward the Blazers need.
That leaves the point.
Before addressing which point guards are available this off-season, we ought to be asking "Is this the year the Blazers are going to make a move for a quality starting point guard?". There's no reason to think Paul or Williams will be available in 2009, they'll both be extended at max this summer. But if you look at this year's crop of free agents, you don't see many quality point guards there either.
I see one name, though. I've always liked Keyon Dooling, though as he's been unable to beat out Nelson for the job, you have to wonder. Also, he's more of a scorer than distributor. Still, he has quick hands and plays tough defense. He could turn the rock over to Roy in the half-court.
There's also the possibility that Memphis gets the second pick and wants to deal Rose's rights (and his high salary) for some less expensive players and a lower pick with its lower salary obligations. They'd probably want more than we could give them though. Even if they don't get the pick, they have a lot of point guards, with Lowry, Conley, and Crittenden. But all are raw - none of these guys have run a team in the NBA for even a year.
Still, McMillan said last season he doesn't want to wear Roy down by having him bring up the ball. I don't see Jarrett Jack being around in the fall, and McMillan doesn't trust Sergio (for a number of good reasons). Steve Blake proved himself to be a reasonably steady performer at point guard, but he's taken the team as far as they can go with him as a starter. So something has got to be in the works.

This is how it will go down
Jack is the only guy on his way out. I’m going all homer like, and I’m going to tell you the truth. Oden, Roy, Aldridge, Webster, and Fernandez will start. Przybilla, Blake, Frye, Outlaw, and Sergio will come off the bench.
When the Blazers are one hardcore championship, dominate the game for a few years type of team, Fernandez will come off the bench, ala Ginobili, and we’ll have a dope point guard as a starter. Ideally that would be Sergio. The best thing about Sergios is, that it is all on Sergio. He has to prove that he has the eye of the tiger. He has to rise up to the challenge of his rivals.

He also needs to put on a jacket
and go strutting down the street with his friends all 80’s like.

we always say Jack is on the way out.
Maybe Blake is the guy to go. I think we all agree that he’s the best PG of the 3, but that should make him the more valuable trade commodity. If he could bring back the better trade (better draft position or better player) than Jack, maybe the team should explore that option. What’s the marginal value of one back up point guard over another in like 20 minutes a game? Jack’s not a bad player.
Among unrestricted FA's
Beno Udrih sounds interesting.
I don’t see the Blazers making him an offer, but the guy looks to be the best of the FA PG’s on the market this summer.
Beno Udrih
Does sound interesting

Come to think of it
I do too. Never put the connection in my head before, though. Thank you for enabling that to happen. Mental note to self: Avoid seafood and rice dishes.

Blake
took this team as far as it would go. The next years will bring very different teams. Blake isn’t great but I’m not in a hurry to shake things up when we’re consistently seeing growth and improvement.
Involving Oden will be KEY this year.
The critical job of any point guard will be distributing the ball inside to Oden and Aldridge.
Which player on the team can do that?
Roy has the court vision and unselfish attitude.
But who else? I think that is Blake.
It will be Steve Blake for several reasons
Blake is the most experienced and reliable PG the team has.
There’s no one better out there that KP can get without losing someone important.
If the Blazers draft a PG (my choice, and I’d like them to get Russell Westbrook), the rookie won’t be stealing minutes from the starter his first year unless he turns into Chris Paul.
Rudy Fernandez, his Euroleague experience notwithstanding, will also be a rookie and is not a point guard.
When the Blazers add Greg Oden and Rudy to the team, Blake might suddenly look a lot better.
Blake is the perfect team guy and can light it up from outside. I also think he will continue to work on his game and will be a better player next year.
I think Jack
Will be much better next year with having Oden in the low block. He was always excellent at getting Zach the ball in the post, and with Oden doing the down low duty, his assist numbers will bounce back up. Steve is excellent at moving the ball around the perimeter, and if we continue to be a perimiter team he will definitely see the most minutes, but if we start focusing on our inside game, i think we will all be much happier with Jack, than we were this year.

I don't see anyone
from the PG position coming in next season. Blake will be the guy again. However, in ‘09-’10, I think we will attract a bigger name free agent, once we make it to the playoffs. I don’t know who, but someone will want to team up with Roy, Rudy, Web-law, LMA, and Oden.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
Udrih
is an interesting option. Surprised he wouldn’t be in Sactown’s future plans now that Bibby is gone. If he’s on the market this summer he should be one of our priority signings.
oh bibby schmibby
and boo-drih to the oo-drih. Another one-dimensional pasty guy.

pasty Udrih is tasty
and an upgrade on our current options at PG. One dimensional? Pfft… he can breakdown defenses with his drive and pass game, shoot the 3 , play respectable D, and he wears a championship ring.
