Magic Want to Acquire One of Portland's 2nd-Rounders
Hi, BE community. It's Ben from 3QC, SB Nation's Magic blog. Here's a news item concerning our two favorite teams that may interest you. From the Orlando Sentinel:
The Magic are watching becasue they plan on trading into the second round, getting a pick from either Portland and Seattle, which has a combined seven second-round picks. The Magic's pick is in Miami as part of the deal they needed to make to sign coach Stan Van Gundy.
We lost our second-round pick to Miami as part of the deal that allowed us to sign Stan Van Gundy as our coach, so we could really use one of your picks. Would you be willing to send one our way in exchange for a future second-rounder?
Shameless plug alert: you can find my take on the rumor here.

Welcome to our community Ben Q.
Interesting proposition, but there’d have to be some sweetners involved, instead of just a 1-for-1. This year is a deep draft, and we’ve got two high picks in the second round (practically first rounders), and a 55 pick (too low for anything good).
If we dealt the two high picks straight across, we wouldn’t get equal value next year (I’m guessing the Magic will wind up with the 45th-50th pick). So the only pick the Blazers would trade straight up would be the 55th, but if you can wait till 55, why not wait and sign them as free agents after the draft?
Just ramblings and thoughts…feel free to dope-slap me if I’m missing something…

How attached are you to Dwight Howard?
2nd round picks aren’t free, after all…
But we’re open to the discussion. I’m just saying, you get the 2nd round picks you guys crave, and get some salary cap space by trading Dwight Howard. We’ll have to eat his contract, but in a small way, we both win (with you winning more).
We’ll throw in RLEC (Raef LaFrentz’s Expiring Contract) to make the numbers work. He can still shoot it though, so really we lose.
I don’t think one of our 2nd round picks can be bought outright, as we don’t need the money, but I could see it traded for a future pick. Otherwise I’m assuming we’re stashing Euros from Burglistania or wherever Euros come from.
I can’t wait for Oden to play Dwight Howard. Also, I’m waiting on pins and needles for the Channing Frye/Brian Cook matchup, so we can finally answer once and for all who has the better tissue soft mid-range shooting PF.
Thanks for letting us know about the rumor, and welcome to Blazers Edge! I’m gonna be swayed by your plug and go check out your website.

Dwight Howard is a chump
I would only give up our second rounders for Adonal Foyle or Pat Garrity

Foyle still plays?!?
Me and my brother used to make bets on random happenings in our lives, and the loser had to play Adonal Foyle a full 48 minutes the next time we played NBA Live.

Welcome Ben Q
I rather like Mortimer’s idea of Howard. We might even throw in one of any number of B-Edgers who would be loaned by the Magic to the Sentinal to tutor their writers on the finer points of English. (Even our beloved Spanish Amlmart wouldn’t write “EITHER Portland AND Seattle.”) I’m sorry, that’s probably unfair, but how can I value anything from that news source when the writer misspells AND misgrammers in his opening sentence? I’m glad to see that you have stolen adopted Dave’s rules for your blog and I hope you are fortunate enough to amass a community as incredible as the one we have here.
Personally I have no problem in trading one of our 2nd round picks. Can we interest you in #13???

Wait!
My misspells and my misgrammers are part of my sign of identity in BE, you canĀ“t rule them. Let my misspelling be free!. By the way, what did you find wrong in those “Portland and Seattle”, something like two towns that nobody can name in the same sentence?. Either Blazers neither Sonics?.

It's "either or"
“Or” not “and” is used with “either”. The Magic would trade for a second round pick from EITHER Portland OR Seattle. It’s also “neiither nor”. NEITHER Portland NOR Seattle were willing to trade with Orlando.
Oh, now I see your second note. See, I was right. You DO know how to use “either or”! Which only goes to prove Henry Higgens right::”There even are places where English completely disappears. In America, they haven’t used it for years! “

I'm glad someone wants them
I really don’t see it being possible for the Blazers to actually use all of their draft picks. In fact, for roster size limits, its obviously impossible. But even for playing time, it would really help us to tighten the roster a good bit.
So yes, if the Magic are actually looking for a 2nd rounder, that’d be a good deal. I don’t know if they’d give up players for it or what, but Dooling would be a great piece for the Blazers to look at.
by rmcdougall on May 29, 2008 10:04 PM PDT 0 recs
You stole my thought
It looks like Dooling is a free agent though. If Orlando is involved, it would have to be a sign and trade. Otherwise the Blazers could use some mid-level exception money to sign him straight up.
How attached to Dooling are the Magic and vice versa? Any thoughts from BenQ?

The Magic like Keyon, Keyon likes the Magic, and they’re mutually interested in staying together, according to this report from a Magic beat reporter. The consensus among Magic fans is that of their own free-agents (Dooling, Carlos Arroyo, Maurice Evans, Pat Garrity, and James Augustine) Dooling is the most important to the team’s success and should be its highest priority.
So I guess what I’m saying here is it’s probably out of the question, yeah. But don’t let that disappoint you. Don’t you all have that Rudy guy coming over? He’s a PG, right? With Rodriguez, Jack, and Blake?

I am happy with our combo for now
I would like to see the Blazers stand pat for at least another year. There might be a couple small changes but a team projected to win below 30 games by most national prognosticators winning 41 games has something going for it.
The blazers add their number one pick and the top european player in the same year to that 41 win team and I can only see improvement next year. I can’t wait for the Howard/Oden matchup.

Good one.
I’d even be willing to let them top-15 protect the pick, reduced annually (15,10,5,none).
