Why are you a hater? (OT)

Now I'm not trying to bring a spirit of negativity here to Blazersedge, I have a lot of respect for some of the up and coming teams (especially in our conference) and I'll even admit to being envious of some of the players (Chris Paul immediately comes to mind) that other fans get to root for on a regular basis.  That being said, I am a hater.  There are certain teams I hate more than others, but generally speaking there a lot of teams that piss me off for various reasons and I thought I'd share some of them with you.  I invite you to put up your own list and reasoning beneath mine...

in no particular order:

Denver: The nuggthuggs have the distinction of being the only team in NBA history to catch their team bus on fire. Twice (seriously, look it up). I wonder how that happened…seriously though, I’m pretty sure they’re tops in the league in players with tattoos and arm sleeves and that must count for something right? The sad part is, George Karl is so ready to bolt from that team that he’s been seen asking Phil Jackson to cut his son Coby Karl from the team so there could be one more seat at the end of the bench for him. BAA ZING!

Boston: If I have to watch one more slo-mo video of KG pounding his chest with his fist and steam coming out of his ears I'm going to vomit.  I know I'm not the only one who lost MAJOR respect for this guy after watching him cuss out our players, get away with murder on both ends of the court, then be lauded for his "emotional play" (he once threw a basketball at Martell Webster's head during warm ups in Minnesota for crying out loud).  But its not just KG, Boston is that championship run team that attracts all the washed up gold diggers from around the league who moan to their owners to buy them out of their contracts so they can have one more shot at a ring this year. Now I don't mind Pierce or Ray Ray, but Big Baby Davis looks like he keeps stealing Rondo's food (okay that was uncalled for) and Kendrick Perkins has got to be the least coordinated center in the league. But what makes it worse is when he gets a DOUBLE-DOUBLE!!! Hmmm, maybe KG is on to something here...

Detroit: One word: Sheed.

Phoenix: I know what you're thinking, Shaq is there now so that should be enough.  But actually, I hated the suns way before the shaq trade.  at the peak of their success (about 3 years ago) and probably our darkest days (I'm talking Bassy to Stat-bo) I remember thinking, they're up by 30 points in the FOURTH quarter...why are they still shooting threes and running the fast break on us? Not only that but the sun’s fans were eating it up. I felt like a Washington generals fan going to watch the Harlem globetrotters. and I know that that’s their style but c'mon, if this was baseball we'd have thrown a pitch at Amare's head.

San Antonio: I don't need to spend a lot of time on Bruce Bowen when clips like this http://youtube.com/watch?v=qRHwB12efXE are around.  If you had to blame one NBA team for importing and popularizing the euro-flop, it would be the team in silver and black.  Tim Duncan is one of the best CENTERS (I honestly cannot understand why people categorize him as a power forward.  The guy is a prototypical center!) of all time but he’s actually best known to the casual fan for the bug eyes he gives the officials the few times they don’t buy into his act. C’mon Timmay, you’re better than that.

L.A.: As if I need to specify which LA team I’m talking about here. John Canzano wrote an article in the Oregonian about why fans hate Kobe for the wrong reasons and how he’s too good to hate now and blah blah blah. Look, he’s a laker right? Good enough for me. I know LA has a championship caliber team led by veterans and possibly the greatest player since MJ but MAN their fans are obnoxious (have you been to the garden lately when the lakers are in town? Bleh). Speaking of which, how hard can it be to be a laker fan? Think about it, the last time they were in the lottery they got Bynum with something like the 14th pick.  That means that the worst they’ve been over the past decade was still better than the blazers were last year. These names should also be mentioned when discussing lakerhation: Karl “Hollywood” Malone, Pre-400lb Shaq, Vlade “I invented the flop” Divac, and Lamar Odom (I only mention him because he’s been in the middle of two shoving matches with the blazers within the past two years).

So who’s on your list?

this is sooooooooooooooooo difficult

1. The lakers : they are just irritating. And Phil, phill philllll is Kobe’s girlfriend. i know they say he’s boinkin the owners daughter and stuff but the real scandal is that he goes home with KB8 at night.

I enjoy watching other teams.

I dont like Jazz.. but they are stuck in a constant state of GETTING SO CLOSE TO A RING BUT NEVER QUITE THERE . so that’s retribution enough for me.

I dont care about the nuggets i actually like going 2 a game at the Garden and counting like 15 “blaze the nugs” signs…LOL so many connotations so little time

maybe the nuggets aren’t made for this list. it really isn’t because theres a lot of bad blood there, they’re just easy to hate.

Yea i hate all of these teams

except for the Pistons. For some reason I really like the way they play basketball, and I think both Rip and Tayshaun are severly undervalued. While it would be jsut kinhd of annoying if they win it again this year, I think the individual players on that team really do focus on team ball, and as a team they have a really high basketball IQ.

Another team that makes the list for me, and has been awesome watching them fail this year is the Bulls. When I was a kid, I was probably one of maybe two jordan-haters in the country under the age of 14. And while this years team doesn’t resemble the bulls of yesterday at all, every time they lose to the Blazers, a little bit of me thinks of it as retribution for 1992.

its hard to hate on piston basketball

and I’ve had this conversation with friends before. people don’t understand why I wasn’t happy to see a former blazer win a ring (or in sheed’s case, a championship belt), but my thinking is that portland looked to sheed to be our leader. he had the game, he took the money (I think 17mil/yr at one point) but he was most famous for smoking weed with damon and recording a record 40 regular season technical fouls. take a minute for that to soak in. he essentially was the face of the JAIL blazers and for that I will forever hate him. winning a championship (even though he was a part of an amazing TEAM that played the right way and vanquished the Lakers on the way) was like throwing gasoline on the fire for me.

And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Oden when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

NO YOU CAN"T!!

wallace is a cancer. he was a cancer when he played here, and he is a cancer now with detroit. any true blazer fan (more than 5 years) should loathe him with a passion. I love rip and tayshaun, but i can’t force myself to even choke down a pistons game. even if they are playing the Blazers.

I can’t even think of the proper words to show how much I hate that POS.

18 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 0 turnovers, 80% FG, 66% 3PT FG. Can my boy get some love?

Hate is such an ugly word.

‘Loathe’ is much more aesthetically appealing to the eye.

The Miami Meat. Any team coached by Pat Riley.
Seriously, watching Riley teams since he was with the knicks is an excercise in masochism. The grabbing, holding, no talent thuggery his teams call “defense” is what killed the NBA for about 10 years there.

Plus the travesty that was the 2006 finals with Dwayne Wade getting a foul called for him every time he touched the ball. Watching them flounder this year was great.

The Nets. Vince Carter sucks, he hasn’t done anything since that dunk contest where he hung on the rim at his elbow joint. Plus Kenyon Martin used to play for them.

The Sonics

You seem a little hallucinated with these comparisons.

by MiledAnimal on May 29, 2008 2:12 PM PDT reply actions

Well...

LA Lakers: Liked them during the Showtime era (but not as much as Portland), but they’ve become obnoxious, like Paris Hilton with a post-up move. Kobe is a punk, Odem is a bigger punk and Phil Jackson annoys the hell out of me.

Boston: K.G. is an even bigger punk than Kobe and deserves to be in the same boat as Karl Malone (e.g. never winning a ring). I like Ray Allen, but he caused enough damage against the Blazers when he was a Sonic to join K.G. and Karl in the S.S. No Ring.

Other than that, I don’t have a problem with the Spurs (Bowen excepted) or the Pistons (except for the team that denied the Blazers a championship in 1990), since both feature former Blazers I like (Ime and ‘Sheed)

(On an aside about Malone – I have hated him from more-or-less day one, but I will give him credit for one thing – he once caused Isiah Thomas to have to have 40 stitches in his face, so good on him)

oh, I love this post...

1. The L@kers… always have been, always will be. My hatred for them is almost as deep as my passion for the Blazers.

The rest, in no particular order, Thuggets (mainly because of their current roster… no animosity over anything else), Jazz (that whole thing with the dirty Stockton to dirty Malone), Pistons (the Bad Boys), and Bulls (just because).

Honestly, I have a very strong disliking for a number of players that makes me not like the team (e.g. McGrady for Houston… I don’t like him, and therefore want them to lose always), but those five teams listed above I truly despise.

Blake brings it up on the right, swings it to Webster on the elbow, he moves around the key and passes to the low left block for Aldridge, Aldridge jukes baseline, turns back in and finds Roy cutting down the seam, ROY THROWS IT UP AT THE RIM FOR ODEN WHO THROWS IT DOWN FOR THE TWO HANDED MONSTER JAM!!! Basketball confounds my rooting hierachy

Which I established watching the NFL

1. All teams from texas must lose, always
1a except when playing the redskins
2. All teams from New York must lose
2a except when playing teams from texas
3. The redskins may win against texas if it means keep a texas team out of the playoffs
4. Any team with Kurt Warner must lose
5. The Packers must lose, unless playing a team with Kurt Warner, unless they lose against a Warner team by Favre throwing an interception on the last play.

by raoulduke on May 29, 2008 3:48 PM PDT reply actions

I am a huge Denver Bronco fan. But even when it was Favre vs. Elway, part of me still was rooting for Favre. You just can’t help yourself from pulling for a guy like Favre. That dude was an iron horse.

The Blazers

They’re just too good. They’ve got the riches owner, the best GM, and a great young coach.

Oh yeah, they stole Brandon Roy from Minny, Prich-slaped Chicago for LMA, and won the richest lottery pay-off in the last 10 years to get Oden. On top of all that, they’re getting the best Euro-player to forego millions of Euros to play for the rookie pay scale in the NBA.

If that doesn’t make you hate the Blazers, they’ll have enough cap-space in 2009 to buy any team’s best player.

This will become a two tier league: The Blazers, and everyone else.

Both will be has been’s in a few more years. Both have played good solid basketball with good character guys. (OK -Bowen and Horry have spotty reputations on the court but actually play good hard basketball and are never in trouble off the court).

As for the others – hate is too strong a word for me. Only desire them to fail often and hard.

Lake Hate

I’ve been a sports fan all my life. I have hated with a passion many teams in many sports. Dallas Cowboys come to mind. But one day I stopped hating all other teams in order to focus all of my hate on one single team. The Lost Angels L@kers. It has served me well.

I also have developed a natural hate for the Spurs as they whine and flop there way to yet another … zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz – they’ve stopped whining and flopping as much since they play the Flakers. They know they have no chance against the David Stern led Refs so they better just shut up and play right and hope they win on skill and effort.

I’ll be rooting for who ever comes out the east. I”m not a fan of Bean Town but shouldn’t we give the world one last LA/Boston series before the Blazer Dynasty begins?

YES

My hate for the L*kers stemmed from those playoff losses to them earlier in the decade. All those buzzer beaters and random Shaq taunts made me hate them even more. Never liked KB8. Period. I also hate that Phil Jackson coaches them. My favorite team growing up (besides the blazers) were the Bulls, so he was a big part of that. My liking towards him disintegrated when he went to LA.

I’m not watching the finals.

I don't hate any team

but I have a strong distaste for Golden State Warriors fans. I like the team, I like the players. I’m not a fan of them, I reserve that for Portland. But I do like them. The fans, not so much. In the year I spent in San Francisco I watched every Warriors game on tv. During these games, I listened to complaints of how the league, for some reason, hates the Warriors. Gave them no calls. Was, in fact, plotting against them. Literally. After several hours, these complaints get old. Returning to school after winter break, I was picked up from the airport by Warriors fans. This was following the win streak. I was met with a smug smile and “So, how do you feel about Roy not making the All-Star team?” At that point, I had honestly not even given Brandon making the team a thought, as such things really aren’t important to me. Sure, I voted for him. But I honestly never thought he’d make it. This was before the announcement, so in the meantime I had to listen to prodding about how it must sting to have had such a good season so far, and to have it go unrewarded at the All-Star break. Honestly, I did not care. Anyway, as we all know, Brandon ended up making the team. Baron Davis did not. Leading up to, during, and after the All-Star game I listened to why Baron should have made it and why Brandon should not have. Brandon is good, but “doesn’t do anything. Baron would have made it the most entertaining game ever. The week after the game I was met with another smug Warriors-fan-smile, and “Brandon Roy. Some All-Star. What did he even do in that game?” I had to listen to them say the Warriors would be the only team in the playoffs without an All-Star. I was told the snub would spur Baron on to do amazing things, and he would take it out on his opponents and propel his team to a deep playoff run, against “inferior” (their exact feelings, not mine) opponents like the Lakers and Hornets. During “Where amazing happens” commercials I listened to them say “Portland: where the playoffs don’t happen.” Mind you, I never said anything negative about Golden State. Unless they had to face Utah, they thought their team was headed to the finals. I began to root against the Warriors as hard as root for the Blazers. And, like everyone else here, that’s a whole lot. Not because I don’t like the team, which as I stated I do. I just wanted to see the fans disappointed. I sat with Warriors fans in the living room of my dorm and watched Golden State blow a 16-point lead against the Nuggets when they had their playoff hopes right in the palms of their hands. I was happy when they were knocked out of the playoff race. I felt slightly bad for the team, but they decided their own fate. Writing this, it seems mean-spirited. Maybe it was. But these were some ANNOYING fans. Nothing against the team. Maybe this comment is way too long. Maybe I’m a horrible person. But it’s hard to feel bad for, without a doubt, the most annoying, least knowledgable basketball fans I have ever come across in my life. This was posted a while back http://bleacherreport.com/articles/17655-The-Portland-Trailblazers-Team-of-the-Future-No-Way-The-Warriors-Are-Better-140408. Biedrins better than LaMarcus indeed. Sorry for the lengthy comment, but the annoyance runs deep. Some will say Lakers fans are worse. Those people would be wrong about this select group of “fans.” All Warriors fans (unfairly) by extension. These 10 or so I knew in particular.

Well I Live in Phoenix

I get so much crap for being a blazers fan for some reason. All my friends give me crap because the Blazers werent as good as the suns this year. I went to a game about 5 years ago when they were a lottery team and it was so quiet that everytime the Blazers scored you could probably hear me cheering all the way across the arena. The Suns have the biggest fair weather fans in my opinion and most of the people that go to the games dress up in suits and use the game as a way to look good for business clients. Thou shall not hate....

But I’m a confessed sinner, so here is my list and why:

1. Lakers. What is there to not hate?

Phil Jackson: I can’t stand how the sports media has made this guy out to be somekind of Zen Guru, and glorifies him. If he hadn’t been tall and played basketball back in the 60’s and 70’s, the only other job I could envision him being successful at during that time would be making animals out of ballons on the street corner. Couldn’t you picture that? Instead, he has made his reputation off of the Hall-of-Fame players and an innovative offense one of his assistants created. Phil is not stupid though. He could have taken any job in the league after he came back from his “sabatical”. What did he do though? He only took a coaching job where he could ride off the coat-tails of two more Hall-of-Famers. With average talent, Phil has shown to be an average coach.

Then there is Kobe, and the arrogant sense of entitlement he exudes. Kobe believes his own lie, in that anytime he is outplayed or makes a mistake, he flails his arms and shows up the ref for the failure rather than himself. He has done this for so long, that he actually believes his own lie and has convinced himself that he actually was fouled and should be at the line. He reminds me of a guy I knew from high school who was popular and drew his confidence through that popularity, but then treated the same people who admired him poorly. If it weren’t for his admirers, he’d be a nobody. He was too blind to see that back then, just like Kobe is now. If Kobe had no basketball talent, and acted the way he does, he would have no fans at all. As it is, he only has Laker fans, and they are about as smart as the south end of a north bound horse.

Speaking of a horse’s rear end, let’s talk about Lamar Odom….a punk for what appears to be no real reason. He reminds me of fecal matter. I hate fecal matter. Therefore, I hate Lamar Odom.

Though I don’t hate Pau Gasol, I hate his facial hair. It just looks trashy and fuels stereotypes about the hygeine of certain types of Spaniards.

So with the exception of what I’ve mentioned above, and besides the fact that Jordan Farmar looks like a car going down the street with its’ doors open, Derrick Fisher dupping the Jazz to let him out of his contract under the pretense that he needed to be closer to doctors that could help his daughter (yet she still goes to NY), and having figure skating champion Sasha Cohen on their team, There is a lot to like about the Lakers. Yay Trevor Ariza.

Oh, I also hate the Lakers because Shaq was always given a special set of rules that allowed him to offensively charge and taunt opposing players in ways that would have gotten any other player in this league in trouble, and yet he and Phil Jackson always cried about how beat up he was getting in games.

2 I hate the Utah Jazz. Not as much as I used to, but I couldn’t stand them when they had Malone, Stockton, and Hornacek on their team. Malone was as dirty as they come, and there is nothing in me that admires him at all. Especially in light of his dead-beat dad status. Malone joins Lamar Odom in the fecal department. Stockton wasn’t so bad, but he had some dirty veteran tricks too. Hornacek had a weird bounce to his step that just really bothered me. Then he’d stoke his face while shooting freethrows, and that was supposed to be somekind of special message to his kids. What the heck message is that? I don’t even want to go there, Also, Mehmet Okur’s hair looks like he let Sam Perkins lick the side of his head, and they both look like they overslept prior to gametime…everytime they’ve been on the court.

Can I buy you a fish sandwich?

I hate kobefan

If you have been to a Blazer-L@ker Game you know who I’m talking about.

There are couple thousand of them. They come in as obnoxious as can be like they own the place… it’s embarassing that they are so many idiots in this town.

You can identify them by the ridiculous flat billed hat that they are wearing along with a powder blue special edition Kobe jersey. Another giveaway is the dead silence that follows asking them to explain illegal defense to you. They simply know Kobe worship… there is no need for them to ever be educated on the nuances of the game. The worst part…. they never are dissappointed by Kobe. If Kobe’s knee blew (please God makes this happen) they would just change their allegiance to Lebron or OJ Mayo or Chris Paul. If asked to choose between and MVP for Kobe or a 60 win season…. they would actually be happier with the Kobe MVP. That brings me to that incessant chanting of MVP….. please Blazer fans never ever ever do that again for BROY or any blazer.

Kobefan is a complete frontrunner and is likely to be a Yankee fan and USC football fan. If one of their teams isn’t doing well they are able to detach and move on to another frontrunner. The only thing that keeps the loyal long suffering PTB fan sane is that our titles will be harder earned & more charished. If we have to go through the L@kers, Kobe & Kobefans that will make a title so sweet.

Note-- Kobefan stereotypes only apply to post 1999 L@ker fans…. there are some good longtime (although original frontrunners themselves) L@ker fans that I can respect.

Lakers. I’ve got to admit, though. I was rooting for them last night, not because I wanted them to win, but because i wanted to watch them lose in the finals again. It’s got to hurt more when you get that close.

Maybe

But I don’t think Boston can beat them. Maybe Detroit can.

I think I have a man crush on Bobby Flay.

Too much

of my “I want to see x team fail” attitude stems from memories of losses – like to the L.k.rs and Pistons. I just cannot root easily for either team. I did hope the Pistons would beat the Celtics because of KG (whom I took a strong dislike to this season) and because of their “gotta win now” wheelings & dealings. I’m more inclined to take a dislike to a certain player which then brings the whole team down in my view. But OTOH, I want to beat everyone so on game night I’m always hating on the opposition. And now? I hope the two finalists murder one another. I don’t want either to win – and I won’t be watching.

Well, I don't want to make a martyr of KGey or Krobe

but I’d sure like to see them hurt each other a lil bit. I’ll watch to see ‘em bleed some. Just think of all the primal screaming you’ll miss if you don’t watch. You could scream invective at both teams. Double your fun.

pretty much the same

I agree with most of these and mostly in this order. Although my only difference is pretty simple:

Team I hate the most: The Lakers
Team I like second to zers: Anyone playing the Lakers.

Basically I’d like to see Kobe, Phil, Lamar, Pau and all the rest of that franchise crash in a fiery plane collision with an nuclear bomb, thus destroying any any all evidence of them.

And i hate KG too. He can be on the plane too.

yeah no brainer… how bad did you want to smack kbe’s smile off his face when the western champion trophy was presented to the lkers

by alexfoster on May 31, 2008 10:57 PM PDT reply actions

That's why I just spell it out

Instead of just typing “Lakers” and “Kobe” like they’re nothing, have no power, not worth the trouble of respelling, you end up bolding their names. I am not afraid to say “Lord Voldemort,” and I am not afraid to type out “Kobe” or “Lakers.”

;-p

Fear of a name breeds fear of a person!

Or something to that effect. That’s why I don’t censor myself when I say Lakers also, because it gives them more power over us then they deserve. We must make THEM, fear us!

Of course, when we’re killing the Lakers all the time in the big games, their fans won’t hate us, they’ll just ignore basketball altogether and go root for whatever LA-area team is doing good at the time. It just won’t be the same.

To me, that’s another reason not to elevate their evil to a level where we are afraid to say their name. I OWN my hatred and I am not afraid of their lame team name or lame players or lame fans. Blazers are just better than Lakers in every single metric, unless you think counting number of championships is a valid way to argue a franchise’s worth (as if, who even keeps track of championships these days. If the Lakers got like 15, we have to at least have 7 or 8 by now. We’re decent too!). I say cooler players, cooler smarter fans, better city, nicer jerseys is the best way to determine which team is better.

And by those metrics, The Trail Blazers are the greatest and most feared team of all time.

So, I don’t beep out Lakers or Kobe. After this run is over, they’ll weep tears of blood when they see the word Blazer and when Oden dunks every Laker fan will get their period all at the same time, boy or girl.

Yeah

I think it started by making it a cuss word and I think that part of it is fun. Mostly, I’m just lazy and hate having to go back and change the “a” to a ”*.” That formatting thing is pretty irritating too. It messed up the comment below this one by Mr. Cactus.

Depends

Usually it’s the Lkers #1, but it hasn’t been as much fun in the past 3-4 when they haven’t been very good. Once they win the championship, they will return to the throne. Aside from the Lkers, here are my rankings:

1. Spurs – this stems back to the days of the drunken Bleacher Bums. Well, they are probably still drunk, but not so much with beer prices and how they cutoff alcohol sales at a certain point. But it starts with their obnoxious fans, and then spills over into players like Bowen and Ginobili who exemplify all that is wrong with the NBA.

2. Pistons – Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer. Need I say more? Joe Dumars knocks them down to the #2 spot. I hated them so much that I actually cheered for the Celtics every time back in the 80’s when they played, and man did I hate the Celtics.

3. Jazz – this starts with their childishly zealous and non-drunk (I assume) fans, and the residue of Karl Malone just won’t go away. Change your name, already. (you too, L*kers)

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
