A Perfectly Good Diary Questioning My NBA Fandom Regarding Boston and LA Ruined by Going Off Topic
Since I became a fan of the NBA in the mid-1990's, I have not missed the NBA Finals. This year, with the idea of Boston and LA playing, I am seriously considering not watching the Finals. I know Kobe will be amazing and would make it worth watching, just to root against him. The problem is that I hate Boston too. Can I watch the Finals and root against both teams?
I honestly do not know the answer to that question. I am sure I will catch a game or two because my only local NBA fan friends are from LA and Boston. I just do not want to watch either team win. I'm torn like Natalie Imbruglia.
Now, to go off topic and mess up a swell diary: My laptop kicked the bucket last night. I do not want a Gateway, Dell, or a computer with Vista. Is my only option a Mac?

It's just too convenient for me.
I’m not saying there is a conspiracy…it’s just too much like watching a predictable, cookie cutout movie….or I don’t know a reunion sequel that should’ve never been made…think the new Indiana Jones movie mixed with Rambo part 4. Just not that good.
You're looking at this exactly backwards
What you should be emphasizing is that no matter what one of your two most hated teams will come very close and FAIL. It’s a win win. If they somehow tie, neither wins. Hope for that. Just make sure to turn the TV off after they show teh sulking losers.

I agree
Someone loses. That’s a plus.
As for your computer, why don’t you want a Dell? I’m an admitted Dell fanboy (bought my first one out of my own pocket when I was like 11…saved up money from birthdays, Christmas, and working every Saturday for minimum wage), and I’ve never had a problem with them. They’ve even warrantied my computers well past their minimum warranty date. They’ve got a deal going right now where you can still get XP on your computer.
With that said, if you’ve got the money, get a Mac. They’re so much better. I’m just cheap, so I get an 850 dollar dell instead of the 2k Apple, but if I had my druthers, I’d be typing this on an Apple for sure.

My Wife
She was an accountant where they issued her a laptop. Her first laptop there was an IBM and she loved it. Her second was a Dell and it had a ton of problem. The most glaring was when the monitor fell off. When I bought my laptop, a crappy Gateway, my wife told me if I bought a Dell she’s end our relationship. A Dell is not an option.
I also used to do internet tech support and learned a lot of new cuss words because of Vista. I just don’t want to deal with it.
I guess I don’t have the money for any computer but I need my weekend Bedge fix. I’m leaning towards the cheapest Mac laptop I can find.

i really liked
my compaq, i got it with the AMD processor instead of the standard intel and I loved it. It ended up frying due to a mishap that involved water and an unsteady container, but it was great while it lasted. I even think they still sell compaq’s with windows xp…
(Woody)
Uhhhg...I hate compaq and HP
and this just in…Vista stinks—the end.
I have a computer-nerd friend who could build you a laptop…but ehh….i doubt he’d give you much of a warranty, but you’d get a fully-loaded [pirated] version of windows xp professional, with all the [pirated] applications you could dream of.
Arr, matey.

Yuuuuuck
I’m on a Compaq Presario V4000 right now, and site rules prevent me from describing in loving detail exactly how I’d like to stick a bleeping bleep right in one or several of its semi-functioning bleeping USB ports.
The hard drive failed after eight months and I had to get an entirely new one installed. Two years later, after being defragged, spyswept, and virus-checked out the wazoo, it’s exhibiting the same ominous signs of kicking the electronic hardware bucket. Being in Spain, and thus without a convenient Best Buy, here’s to hoping it holds together another six weeks. The moral of the story: I say steer clear of Compaq. (Mine is one with Windows XP for whatever that’s worth).

Dell used to have high ratings
I haven’t had issues with my dell apart from some water on the keyboard and frying it a little. All my work laptops have been dell, and they work as well as others.
Look for laptops that are not loaded with useless junk (HP, Compaq tend to be the worst) because all the proprietary tweaking they do for their junk software always seems to mess things up.
XP is still out there, avoid the vista. I’m thinking SP2 might finally fix it, but it’s not there yet no matter what others say. I’ve heard some computer geeks say they like it, but NOT the casual user who doesn’t want to tweak a thing and just wants something that WORks!

I'm running XP SP3 on my DELLs
Their Busness line LATITUDE is built solid.
I carry and use a slim dual fan cooling pad to set ‘em on. Heat is the challenge to laptops and when actually used on your lap protect you from private discomfort (a $25 item).
A sticker will cover up that DELL button.

Latitudes are solid except for the hinge
I have had my Latitude D600 for 3.5 years and I have already busted one of the hinges on the monitor twice. Luckily the 1st time it was still under warranty and they fixed it free, but this time I am waiting until the monitor falls off before getting it fixed again.
I had a Dell Inspiron. The monitor died after about 3 months.
Dell sent someone to the house two different times to change the monitor. That guy confided that Dell had had some mix up and had been replacing parts on stuff with parts taken from a warehouse for returned parts. Somewhere in all that a blue screen of death appeared and would not go away. So I had to send the thing away to a repair site in Georgia or somewhere. It came back in 4 days in the same state it left with a message about problems with the OS. Next I took it to a local repair shop that told me it had nothing to do with the OS. So I demanded that Dell replace the laptop. They finally did, with a model of Inspiron that had been discontinued and with no warrenty. Also I failed to mention the hours and hours and hours and hours of quality time I spent on the phone with very polite people from India. That whole process took about 3 months.

Simple Solution to Vista
1) Reformat the Vista containing hard drive
2) Install XP as the operating system using the disc that came with your recently deceased computer
3) Install the drivers that came with your new computer…
Problem solved.
I had the same problem with LXkers vs. Spurs
I hate the LXkers and I hate the Spurs. I wasnt sure I could root for a team with Robert Horry and Bruce Bowen on it, then I saw game 1. Watching the Fakers eliminate that 20 point lead and win the game was simply gutwrenching. I hate the LXkers, I will root emphatically for them to lose…
RUDY > MJ
I feel your pain, brother.
Celts vs. Fakers… barf. Brings to mind an interesting question, though. We all know the NBA has been lining this matchup since last off season forcing the KG to Boston trade on Minnesota, then forcing the Gasol to LA trade on Memphis, then “refereeing” the games in a manner in which those teams are prohibitive favorites. But now that it’s about to happen, who do the refs give the calls to?
As far as your comp, check out this thing called a Commodore 64... I heard it’s really sweet.
Blake brings it up on the right, swings it to Webster on the elbow, he moves around the key and passes to the low left block for Aldridge, Aldridge jukes baseline, turns back in and finds Roy cutting down the seam, ROY THROWS IT UP AT THE RIM FOR ODEN WHO THROWS IT DOWN FOR THE TWO HANDED MONSTER JAM!!! Yeah so many superstars
who do they favor? lol, we all know they are gonna call in Kobe ’s favor. The Lakers are gonna win it all, lets just get over it already. I dont see the point in even watching that..unless I wanna see Pierce v. Kobe…kinda like Pierce v. lebron that was fun. I hate both teams but Hate kobe more and the celtics less, at least they had many years of SUCKING and mediocrity b4 this point, the lakers are the epitomy of this business they have the most $ have to win all the time bc they have the biggest market etc..we just have 2 get used 2 it..

That cracked me up
Maybe I’ll watch and then instead or rooting for the offense, I’ll root for the refs and fouls.
I hear ya
Both Boston and LA in the finals = THE WORST. I can’t stand either team. Never though I’d be hoping for a Spurs-Pistons matchup, AGAIN. I probably won’t watch much, but only because I’ll be visitng my mother. Unless I can drug her, basketball is simply not an option. Yeah, I’d watch if I could . . .
As for the computer thing, we recently ended up going through a local techie and got exactly what we wanted (with warranties). I’ve had an IBM, a Gateway, and a Dell, and this current no-name one tops them all. The best thing was that it didn’t come loaded with a bunch of commercial garbage; he loaded his favorite browsers, virus software, etc instead. It’s an XP machine; Vista never came into the conversation.
Compelled to watch Celtics win...
I will tell you, the more I watch the playoffs this year, the more I enjoy and respect the Celtics. Kevin Garnett is a PRO. He is one of the best PRO athletes ever. IT all matters to him and it shows through his play, his interviews and his interactions with team mates. KG is clutch and intense, which makes him cool and fun to root for in my book.
The more and more I watch the Celtics, the more I am forced to respect Paul Pierces game, too! Paul Pierce was NOT a player that I respected or liked very much. It is impressive to watch a player who has not been in these big situations before taking control of games like it is old hat to him. The other day Kobe had a quote about there ever only being two “killers” in this sport (he mean’s icy-viened stone-cold scorers in the clutch that you can’t beat, referring to himself and that other guy Air Jordan), but I have to tell you, watching Pierce exchange big clutch plays with LeBron James was an eye opener and I think that Pierce is a very elite closer in the NBA.
Since the Blazers aren’t in it, I would love to see the Boston Celtics win it all this year. KG’s work ethic and reputation deserve it… but KG’s work ethic and play will probably earn it all over again by the time it is through. The Celtics have earned my respect this off-season and I am rooting them on. Who cares about the past, about the history of teams that are in it now. I don’t, I definitely like Rip Hamilton more Isiah Thomas; I am not rooting on Magic Johnson to be the Spurs…there is no way I am rooting on Kobe to beat anyone. Magic, I would have.
These are different teams in a different era. Boston is a team made up of great NBA players who really didn’t get great opportunities on the biggest stage in their sport until now. I hope guys like KG and now ever Paul Pierce get to add the credibility of an NBA title to their career accolades.

Well Said
I think 50% of my dislike for both teams has to do with their fans. I could root against Boston because I think Bill Simmons writes better when he is sad, but that would mean rooting for Kobe. I hate that guy but love his game. I think he is the only player, that when I see him take a shot, no matter how off balance or guarded, that I expect it to go in. He is amazing. Maybe when or if I watch, I should root for everyone to miss. I just can’t make up my mind.

And since I’m not interested in seeing any of the remaining teams win the championship I have no end of other, better things to do than watch this year’s finals.
Thanks

Already done.
I quit watching the playoffs when the Hornets lost game 7, since I despise the l*kers and have issues with players on the other teams (Bowen, Garnett, Sheed). As far as I’m concerned, basketball season is over and won’t start again until the Blazers’ first preseason game.
Jerry Sloan is a complete and total smeg head.

I bought an ASUS laptop last year
with Vista but XP was available as well. I hated XP (my big computer still runs well with 2000) and Vista is not bad with 3 GB memory. Most of the complaints are about features you can turn off. It is a much more stable platform than previous windows versions.
And I am done watching this year as well. Next year can not come too soon.
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."
I'll probably watch any potential series-ending game
No matter who it is. But game 1, 2, 3…nah.

If you dont talk to your cats about catnip, who will?
I will watch it simply to root against L.A.
The ‘Big Three’ of Boston to me all come off as relatively good guys, and have not experienced much success so I don’t see a problem with them doing well (especially since they’ll be flaming out here in a couple years). But more importantly, my overwhelming hate for the Lakers will drive me to watch the Finals. But i will turn it off real quick if Odom is on his way to a ring… I really hate that guy.

I’m darned sad LA won tonight. I laughed when the announcers said LA was returning to the finals for the first time since 2004. Pity the LA fans, having to wait for four whole years. Ah, well, it’s always sort of a refreshing change to cheer for the Eastern conference.

Go Boston
A couple of guys in here have said as much, but I don’t see the anti-Boston sentiment. Essentially, how can you not love KG? He plays with the boyish glee and intensity that I wish more players would show.
He is a Poser
He’s simply a loud mouth jerk who attempts to intimidate people and he shrinks away from the pressure of big games. He’s a poser and a crybaby. Another reason to root against Boston is Sam Cassell who whined he way into Boston. Refusing to honor the contract he signed, and he fully expecting his employer to cut him so he could join Boston. He also wanted to continue to be paid by his former employer. The threat was that if he didn’t get cut and paid by his former team, then other free agents would not sign with the team. Also, everyone on the team are pro-insert the most offensive thing you can thing of here.

I guess it depends on what you're using it for.
If tweaking little numbers like Ghz and Video RAM to the Nth degree is your cup of tea, oe if you play all the latest PC games, then a PC will fill your days with all that you want. If you want to sit down at a computer and just go, reliably, as in I-only-restart-my-laptop-every-four-months-letting-it-sit-in-sleep-mode-when-I’m-not-using-it reliable, then you may want to look at a Mac. I’ve never purchased any anti-virus software and still leave my computer plugged into the internet 24/7 without one single problem (although I may have just jinxed myself? Ah, no worries.) Each time I sit down at a PC, I have to fight through all the garbage that comes with them to do almost anything that I do on a Mac worry free. To me, that’s so worth the difference in price tags for the unit itself.
I will point out one thing though. My father-in-law just got one recently after using PC’s for years (he’s an engineer type, and still has one around to fulfill his needs). He keeps calling and asking questions which show that he was trying to make things harder than they really were. I could spin this off into a theological concept at this point, but perhaps another day.

U got a MacBook
The only PC my wife was willing to purchase was an IBM and they cost about as much as a MacBook. It lets me use the mouse I used with my old Gateway, so I’m happy go lucky. I only use it for mp3’s, pictures, writing, and the internet. Thanks for everyone’s help.
I can’t use my dang Sony mp3 player and now have to ask for an ipod for my birthday. That chaps my hide. I haven’t listened to sports in days.
I think I have a man crush on Bobby Flay.

I've been using mine for seven years now.
Only dropped it on the pavement four times. The only time I did any damage was when the CD tray was open (before slot-loaders) and it got bent. It is a little worse for wear now, but it has spent seven years as a throw into my book-bag computer, and held up nicely. It is time for a new one, and when I get the money (read: when my wife okays the bill) I plan on getting another one.
Although, I don’t recommend dropping them, even if they can take it.

Dang
I didn’t realize the total commitment to mac, that is required when you switch over. My mp3 player doesn’t work with the Mac and all the junk I had saved on my external hard drive isn’t compatible. I’ll figure it out, but it’s like changing political parties or religions.
;-p
Actually, that shouldn't be the case.
Unless it has been specifically designed not to work with a Mac (i.e. Microsoft sometimes can be good at this), it should work. Now, if you had some programs on that hard drive, they likely wont run, but things like pictures, music files, that kind of stuff should pop right up without much of a problem. I’d take advantage of your 30 days of free Apple Tech support (or however long you’ve got with a new computer purchase) to call and ask a few questions. Still, it is tech support, and you probably know more about that field than I.
You might also check out Sony’s support site and the company who made your external hard drive, they may be able to give you some answers.

Run Windows on a Mac
There are actually a couple of ways to set up the Macs with Intel processors to run Windows. You use Boot Camp (which allows you to choose if you want to run Windows or OSX upon startup) or use emulators like the open source wine or Crossover (which is the commercial implementation of wine)
That should solve most/all of the issues you are having
Yeah, I think that's what I'll have to do
I still have the hard drive from my laptop so I think I can jiggle it and run that and get everything. The Gateway died because it won’t run on shore power and it won’t recharge the batter. The problem is where the power chord plugs into the computer. The mp3 player is incompatibles and Sony is a bunch of jerks. Look at their support site. The dad blame external hard drive has an encryption program on it. I should have just dragged what I wanted onto it. I didn’t so I have to have Windows to run that program. Two guys at work have the da kine to hook up a laptop drive to another laptop. As long as I don’t have power issues, I should be fine when I use those.
If all else fails, I just gotta put all the junk on my work computer, then drag it back onto the external hard drive unencrypted so the mac can get it. My birthday is the 11th. I’m so important that it is a holiday here. Sugar momma bought me a Nano as an early birthday present, so it cured my mp3 problem.
Thanks friends

Hey Pardner
What sports podcasts do you listen to? I like to listen to ‘em as well and I would like to know what you listen to so I can listen to them to and imagine that somewhere, sometime, you are hearing the same words I am hearing and we are as one.
I listen to Oregonlive’s Blazer podcasts, Dave’s new podcasts, Blazers Courtside, Basketball Jones, and Chad Ford’s podcast. Sometimes, Bill Simmons if it isn’t about baseball or football. Oh, and Sports Business Radio. Is there any others that are good, and mostly NBA related? I don’t mind it not being ALL Nba, but that being the focus is best for me I must say.
Am I missing anything awesome that I need to listen to?
Mortimer
You got most of them and more that I don't listen too
I listen to the Oregonlive ones, Dave’s, Chad Ford’s Bill Simmon’s and then all the morning shows on ESPN. I get them all here. I load the PTI, ATH, Tirico & Van Pelt, Best of Mike and Mike, and Thundering Herd. Mike and Mike is on live at midnight my time so I really cannot listen to them live. I need two hours of content for my bus ride and more for walking my dog. All the ESPN ones are good because they are daily Monday through Friday. If I DVR PTI and ATH, then I don’t listen to them.
I never miss a Bill Simmons podcast because he’s always good for almost an hour. I think Chad Ford’s is probably some of my favorite, because they are quick and informative. I’ll check out Basketball Jones. I always had trouble with Courtside but might have better luck now that I have an ipod.
;-p
I've had HP and Dell. They both suck for different reasons, but the Dell is especially bad.
I work at (no longer for) a very large electronics company which shall remain nameless but is not Apple. They manufacture laptops as one of their products. Many of the very technically oriented people I know there have Macs as their personal laptops and boxes. Just sayin’.
