Remember the zone?
I do. I remember how we won a lot of games using a zone defense that teams struggled to break down.
It seems, however, that lots of us forget the zone from time to time.
1. "Greg Oden will be in foul trouble a lot his rookie year." How many times have we heard that? But a zone protects individual players from being targeted for foul trouble by the opposition to the same extent. I think the "foul-prone" argument is way over-blown, but if it becomes a problem, expect to see Nate use a zone quite a bit.
2. "Our bigs are going to be in foul trouble because quick PGs are going to get into the lane all the time and draw fouls." Ever hear that one? Remember the zone. It's hard to penetrate against a well-organized zone. You beat a zone by moving the ball and finding the open man. If quick PGs are penetrating at will, expect to see the zone.
3. "We need a super-quick defensive PG to keep quick PGs from running riot." Now, I would like us to have exactly that, a super-quick defensive PG, and I hardly care if he ever scores. But need? I remember the zone. Good team defense can help you with a quick PG who is going on a tear.
A zone has flaws. A good-shooting NBA team which is willing to patiently move the ball will find the open shot and punish you. You can't live by the zone forever. But it can help you solve some of the problems that people want to make major trades to solve, and some of the problems (like Oden fouling) that people are worried about.
Every team will have weaknesses. A good coach will find ways to minimize your weaknesses, and maximize your strengths. A zone is one of the tools at his disposal. The more strengths you have, the easier it is to hide your weaknesses.
This roster, as it stands now, will be a very, very good team. And Nate and his assistants will find both offensive and defensive schemes to take advantage of what we have.
If we make a trade to upgrade our defensive skills at the point, or acquire Calderon, who is perhaps even worse defensively than what we have now, Nate will adjust defensive schemes accordingly.
We don't HAVE to make a trade to address our weaknesses. It will be better if we can make a good trade that does. But remember the zone. We have coaches who can figure something out. We are not slaves to our weaknesses anymore. We have too many strengths on this team for that, now.
In future, other teams will be at least as concerned with counteracting/neutralizing our strengths as they will be with exploiting our weaknesses. We're that kind of team, now.

All salient points
and think about the length and athleticism we can trot out with a lineup of Roy, Fernandez, Trout, LMA, and Oden. How would you like to try penetrating or crashing the boards against a fivesome whose shortest member is 6´6”?
I also liked your point about the other teams having to match up with our strengths instead of us curtailing our game plan to minimize our weaknesses. I think a lot of Blazers fans, myself included, have a hard time imagining forcing other teams to worry about US for a change after the lean past half-decade we´ve “enjoyed”.

You beat me
I’ve been working on a piece regarding team defense, and you got half my points covered. Well done.
I would add that as our players gain experience, our defensive schemes will take on greater complexity. We still may have difficulty playing solid man-to-man defense, but the chemistry is in place for outstanding team defense. I’d also argue that that kind of defense is superior because it involves all five players working as a unit rather than five players on seperate islands covering their man.
Covering a Chris Paul-type player will be geared more toward channeling his penetrations into an area of your choosing rather than his. Our perimeter defender can overplay one side, allowing an easier path leading right into the waiting arms of GO and LMA. If CP takes the opening, he finds himself blocked and quickly surrounded with only two options: a contested shot or a difficult pass. Sure, he’s very good at making those passes, but this option puts the battle on the Blazer’s terms rather than the CP-type player. Having that type of team defense will allow our perimeter players to be more aggressive in the passing lanes, creating more turnovers and fast-break opportunities.
I’m really looking forward to what Nate has in store for the defense next year when he has GO available to him.

Nice diary
I don’t have much else to say. I like the part about teams matching up to us, instead of having to match up to them.

If you don't have anything to say
then obviously, you should go off-topic.

Ok
My wife has workout DVD’s called The Zone. There are some really hot women on those DVD’s. She used to work out to them and I would secretly watch them while she was at work. I never worked out though.

We're stealing Jscots diary
Each morning starts out with my wife saying she’s going to work out at 7:00 PM and each day ends with her calling me, telling me she’s on her way to Chili’s with her coworkers.

The master of the universe won't mind. It gives him more opportunity to punish us.
OT on this OT. Chili’s shut down a bunch of their restaurants in the Portland area. Their workers showed up for work one morning and the doors were locked.

If they did that here
They would all just move to California Pizza Kitchen; it’s the only other places that sells alcohol near their work.
