Pot Poll

Nobody say anything in the comments that might get you into trouble with family, friends, work, or the law.... but since the subject of Josh Howard has come up in another diary (and dope has long been a bane of the JailBlazer years), it's time for a quick poll on the subject of pot.

Quite simply:  Do you?

Feel free to not answer, obviously.  This is a sensitive subject for many people, and I know I've addressed it before.  But if you do answer, answer honestly.

Pakalolo

When I lived in Eugene a nice 49 year old professional account executive lady coworker, wanted to get a tattoo for her 50th birthday. She had me go with her just to talk with the artist, because I have a few tattoos. After about 30 minutes of question and answer with the tattoo artist, I said to her, I said, “I’m gonna go upstairs to Hunkey Dory and look around while you two hash this out.” Then she said to me, she said, “Will you find me a small water pipe.”

Afterward she went up and bought the pipe I found for her. On the ride back to work, she listed off lots of important people in Eugene who smoke regularly.

Quite a few of my wife’s professors at U of O would talk about and admit to smoking pakalolo.

I think drugs are bad but don’t care about pakalolo. As long as people don’t do it at work or drive under the influence, then it does not concern me. I know people who are addicted to it and they can be real jerks if they don’t have any. I think there are far more important issues in this world that should be dealt with instead of pakalolo.

That said, I'm not naive enough to think there aren't drawbacks

And I’m pretty aware of what they are for me. Like anything else in life you take the pros and cons and decide if it’s for you.

Funny thing about all this, ever since I started I don’t drink anymore. Like, at all.

I don't care what the players do off the court (within reason)...

just don’t get caught.

Blake brings it up on the right, swings it to Webster on the elbow, he moves around the key and passes to the low left block for Aldridge, Aldridge jukes baseline, turns back in and finds Roy cutting down the seam, ROY THROWS IT UP AT THE RIM FOR ODEN WHO THROWS IT DOWN FOR THE TWO HANDED MONSTER JAM!!! WOW

This poll slightly scares me. You’re telling me 52 out of 69 people claim to have smoked the stuff in their life? Maybe I’m just a disconnected, naive, noob who has a rosy view of the world, but I wouldn’t expect more than 25 percent. I guess some people are just being silly, but seriously….wow.

Issues with Pot and Sports

1.) Unless you’re eating the brownies, it’s a messing with your lungs. I don’t want no freaking euro’s because they smoke like crazy, and I don’t want no freaking pot smokers for the same reason.

2.) It slows the reflexes. Damon made a statement of amazement at “wow, my reflexes are so much better now!” like it was a thing of wonder. It’s not. Just imagine how great some of these players would be if they not only tried, but didn’t smoke something that slowed them down. I want to win and I want the players who will take every competitive legal advantage they can.

Outside of all that, I really don’t care that much although I choose not to hang around it. I tried a joint when i was ten and then again four years ago with a gf because she was into it… but I couldn’t figure out how to inhale it or I was just not into it. I was trying not to get the tip wet and so I doubt I got any.

It’s really just not my thing and I’d rather enjoy life’s natural highs as opposed to working on some artificial ones that are harmful. Plus, I’d just prefer not to risk a “this is nice” style of addiction. I have enough vices as it is.

My thought

is that if you’re an NBA player, who’s getting paid millions for your body, essentially, why wouldn’t you take care of it by not smoking? Just seems like common sense to me.
I can understand why the guy who hates his life smokes (I don’t agree with it, and would hope that he doesn’t), but come on! If you’re getting paid a cool million or more on a yearly basis?!

One could extend that argument to lots of things.

Drinking, for one. But nobody minds it much if players drink, as long as they don’t turn into Shawn Kemps or Vin Bakers. Heck—what do you think will be flowing in the winning team’s locker room come June? Besides water in the showers?

And lots of activities are contractually prohibited to players—riding motorcycles (ahem, Jay Williams), snowboarding (that means you, V-Rad), playing pickup ball at the Y when you’re coming off of microfracture surgery (tsk, tsk, Oden), skydiving, etc.

That said, the physical effects of the occasional joint are probably less significant than a lot of perfectly legit things that players do. Guys who are stoned half the time ain’t gonna be in top basketball shape, for sure-just like guys who routinely stay out and drink all night. (Or have sex-there is ample medical evidence that busting a nut prior to competition adversely affects a male athlete’s performance; strangely, the reverse seems to be true for women).

How soon before someone hurts themselves playing DDR, or Wii Sports, etc?

At what point do we draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable risk?

by EngineerScotty on May 23, 2008 3:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Shawn kemp's vice was Coke and making Babies

I’m sure he drank some but not in the Vin Baker league. And don’t get me started on the the problems with Strip clubs and NBA players.

by NWfan on May 23, 2008 4:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Uh, I think Kemp's vice was mozarella stick and chicken strips dipped in butter

Never in my life will I understand how someone who did a king’s ransom in coke could be so overweight.

ABuse

is da issue when it comes down to it. Blazers of old DEFINITELY abused. I heard SO many times “DANG the blazers have a huge stash of awesome green! I’ve never seen so much in my LIFE!!!”

Even Drexler era blazers were flawed and had their own vices. You just didn’t hear about them on the news.

I suspect Jordan kept his vices to women and gambling. Six championships later…

I hear you

but I’m a little surprised about how against it you are.

A) Players shouldn’t smoke anything PERIOD. Now vaporizing or eating brownies during the off season or All-Star break may be a different story.

B) Smoking pakalolo is NOT I repeat NOT a big deal if you are an adult. If you are under 18 it’s a bad BAD idea. Much like drinking.

You see, I would much rather find my 17 year old smoking pakalolo then cigarettes which are legal and infinitely more addictive and harmful. I would sit down have a talk with him and say hey man I see what you are doing but how about you cool it until college and don’t let it effect your grades.

Basically I never understood why something that has been involved in a tiny tiny fraction of deaths by any cause and is not usually itself a cause of death is so hated. Then I looked into it and discovered the hate is clearly a propaganda snow job that if one looks into it is related to Oil, Pharmaceuticals and Timber. Why I wonder is something that has so many uses ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp ) illegal when you have to specifically grow it to produce the drug version?

I bet you probably think it’s no big deal to eat genetically modified food replete with known carcinogenic pesticides drink from plastic bottles and many MANY other things that are bad for you without a second thought. You have fallen for what is one of histories most incredible cases of black balling.

I certainly think it is inappropriate for children for whom it can cause brain growth issues. It also is potentially addictive but no more so then Alcohol. I think we should have an open and honest debate about how to deal with Pokalolo rather then the scare tactics and outright propaganda that has been put out for the past 70 years. When something is outlawed, especially something that grows naturally, you only force it into the shadows and create a black market. Look at what happened during prohibition in the 1930's. We need to keep our focus on truly dangerous drugs such as cocaine, Heroin and Meth. Our law enforcement officials have their hands more then full dealing with those three to be wasting there time busting cheech and chong on the way back from the quickie mart.

I've cooled down now a little

no, not from that.

Basically Pokalolo = bad for kids OK for adults like many things.

For kids it messes with their development. For adults it is no worse and indeed often better then Alcohol or Cigarettes not to mention the myriad anti-depressants and tranquilizers people down without a second thought. There was a well orchestrated campaign about 70 or so years ago to destroy hemp by various rich elite types who made a bundle off it being made illegal. This has been a huge loss to farmers and to the environment. The illegality has everything to do with Industrial Hemp and very little to do with stoners.

lets be honest

for how many years has the NBA, and every other major sport orginization, been a fraternity for athletes who regularly smoke lettuce? Its no secret these players wouldnt pass any UA that they werent previously informed 30 days beforehand was going to occur.
The current drug policies in sports are deliberately designed to give these guys adequate fair warning. Cant we face it? The drug policies for pro athletes are hardly prohibitive. Only the stupidest of them get caught. Say like some moron trying to pass thru an airport with their home-grown in a foil wrapper.

78 to 26 have tried or regularly use.

and 16% said they didn’t do it but it was their personal choice. I have new respect for this board. This has always been such a silly and trivial issue and yet we’ve spent BILLIONS as a nation only to have 50% of all people (roughly) try it anyways. There has GOT to be better use for that money.

50 percent really doesn't surprise me

I would estimate my high school had about a 90% rate of drinking, smoking, pills, or most commonly a combination of the two. That’s scary. Not good for kids. As for everyone else, that’s their choice. Like any enhancement one must be careful, but in comparison with most things we put in our bodies, grass is not too bad. As for players, if it doesn’t affect their performance, it’s fine by me. I would suggest not alternatives to smoking it for athletes though, actually that goes for everybody, but it’s more expensive. Kids out there, be smart, you have the rest of your life ahead of you, wait till your grown up at least. Non-smokers, right on, just be tolerant, and please don’t buy into the stereotypes. I’m so sick of that!
