Hey guys, I was following the game because former Bucks’ pick Ersan Ilyasova plays for Barca, but that just got me wondering about your plans for Rudy. He and Gasol seem to be vying for the title of best player in Europe right now and given the possibility of Michael Redd being traded I was curious what you guys were expecting from him or how available his rights might be via trade.
Assuming he comes over next season I’d think he’s the primary backup to Roy at SG? What do you think it would take for Pritchard to trade him?

i dont think anyone can really answer this question untill he has signed w/ the Blazers. I do however get the feeling that Rudy’s rights were not acquired to be used as a trade piece/bargaining chip. KP doesn’t do such things and I dont pledge my

Hi Frank
I don’t think rudy is very available. After all of the trouble KP and the blazers staff have gone through to talk him into coming over to the NBA I think I would be suprised if they made a deal that included Rudy.
"The next day in practice, if you sweat, it's going to come out of your pores, regardless. If you ask any coach around the league how many times they have smelled liquor on a player . . . As long as that player is showing up on time, doing the drills and running, that's part of it. But there have been times, yeah. Yeah, you probably smelled liquor on me. But it's not like I'm at practice drunk. I'm totally focused."

KP has said that he considers Rudy a top 5 pick in this years draft...
So he wouldnt be any cheaper than a top 5 pick in this draft. My feeling is that they have no interest in moving Rudy, but you never know. I would be pretty P.O’d if they did…

Fernandez for Calderon
That was my suggestion the other day, based on the Raptors logjam at PG and the Blazers need for an upgrade at that position. Obviously other players would have to be involved to make the salaries match.
I do forsee a PT conflict with Rudy and Roy playing the same (SG) position. Neither player will ever be a “Nate McMillian kind” of defender at the PG or SF

i agree and partly disagree
I think that Roy has WAYYY better defense skills than Rudy. Of course this opinion is only based on what I’ve seen which is HELLA youtube clips of Rudy. But def. Rudy isn’t quite known for his d. and Roy is kinda, like, almost the best defender on the whole freakin team!

Nate-Like defender right?(as in he defends like Nate used to)
I mean obviously Roy is a Nate guy (as in Nate loves him and plays him a bunch)

Good point but the flip side
is who is going to guard against Brandon and Rudy? It depends on the team defense being able to cover. My money in this team at this time is on needing a scorer more than a defender.

PT conflict
Roy plays more like a PG than a SG on offense, and Rudy looks like he might be quick enough to guard point guards on defense. I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be playing together. If there aren’t any big trades, I think we will see Roy and Rudy as the starting guards next year.

agree sort of,
neither can guard the likes of Paul or Parker one on one, but with Oden and LMA clogging the middle Roy and Rudy should be servicable on the defensive end. Also, with an Roy and Rudy combination, I would think our opponents will have more to worry about when it comes to defending the guard positions then we will!!

"Rudy looks like he might be quick enough to guard point guards on defense"
If that’s true then we’ve got nothing to worry about except where to put all the championship rings and trophies
but I’ll have to see Rudy play actual on-ball defense against an average NBA point guard before I’ll relax and admit he’s a defensive option that Nate can rely on

again with the PTB need an upgrade at point
Kevin Pritchard is not going trade Steve Blake this year. He went out of his way to bring Blake into his system, and with our team, Blake is going to fit in nicely. Larue, you of all people should know what investing too much into one player can do to a team.

I'm going... unlikely
Rudy appears to be a good volume 3pt shooter, excellent at the free throws, and also good at distributing the ball. Additionally he’s had a lot of experience winning, and that is something that tends to be underrated.
I can’t speak for KP (Kevin Pritchard), but I really don’t see us making a trade. Rudy is young and can develop.
I agree about the log jam at SG, but it sounds like Rudy may also play the PG position as well as brandon and while we may suffer a little on defense, that’s a combo that will make up for it on offense. Additionally I’ve heard talk that Rudy may be quick enough to guard other point guards and with a stronger focus on defense, may do well in this area.

Even if Rudy doesn't start next year,
I see him in the three guard rotation. Blake, Roy and Rudy will probably get the majority of the time in the back-court. Of course, this assumes he’ll be good enough to do so, but blind homerism makes it easy to see that he will.

My first impressions of the new and improved Rudy
After the first half, I was honestly very impressed. I was mainly watching to see if Rudy has point guard skills, and in that half he did some things that really caught my eye. He got out and led the break several times, one time he went coast to coast for an easy layup, the next time he had a beautiful one handed bounce pass off the dribble that squeezed through 2 defenders and found his teamate for a layup, the next time he drew a shooting foul, one time he realized the numbers werent there and wisely pulled it up and set up the offense. He also had a brilliant pass after driving base line that set up an easy Moiso dunk. I believe he went 3 for 4(5?) from deep in the 1st half and made anything he did look flat out effortless.
His 2nd half was a little bit more human. He started off brilliantly by hitting a deep 3 and slamming home a break away dunk. After that he started to become less of a factor, he didnt seem to touch the ball much in the halfcourt during the 3rd quarter. He ran a nice 2 on 2 break in which he found the trailer for a wide open corner 3, which was swished through. Oher than that he put up a couple of forced shots and looked a little bit rattled by Barcelona’s defensive adjustments. Barcelona built a double digit lead during this time.
A few minutes into the 4th quarter, Rudy started to come back to life. He realized that Barcelona was taking him out of his perimeter game and he adjusted by attacking the rim. Rudy shot 10 4th quarter freethrows, many of which were with DKV down by about 10 and fighting the clock. Rudy’s ability to drive the lane caused Barcelona fits as everytime he did, they had to foul. When they didnt, he found Moiso for a layup and finished another off by himself. With 5 seconds left and down 3, Rudy got about a 30 foot look from 3 to beat the buzzer and tie the game, but it wasnt meant to be.
Its hard for me to read too far into what I saw, especially since its my first time seeing anything but highlights since last summer. I do have to say that he appears to have point guard potential, especially with Roy running the show in the half court. However, his defense is highly suspect and may be a real area of concern playing under Nate. I feel like the olympics will be the best time to evaluate Rudy. He will be playing against NBA competition and will have a role on that team that is far more similar to what his role with the blazers will be. Overall though, I was pretty dang impressed, and my expectations were high…

So for the teams, the free throws were heavily in Barcie's favor . . .
. . . but for Rudy specifically, he drew 11 fouls while committing 4?
Sounds like he wasn’t part of Joventut’s weakness for this particular game.
They lost in spite of his ability to draw fouls rather than commit them.

Matador defense
“However, his defense is highly suspect and may be a real area of concern playing under Nate.”
We’ve seen how Sergio’s struggles to defend have led to reduced PT from Nate. Sure, Rudy is a better player than Sergio but McMillian will not put up with missed assignments and repeated dribble penetration. If Rudy’s man consistently gets by him and into the paint, it could lead to early foul trouble for Oden, Przybilla and Aldridge

Rudy's seemed more uninspired on defense than anything...
He cheats around screens a lot and prefers to sag in the passing lanes when trying to keep his man from getting the ball. My general impression from this game was that he seemed like a guy that is asked to more or less carry the load on offense while maybe trying to save some energy on defense. For this reason I think it would be better to evaluate his defense when he gets to Spain and man defense becomes a much higher priority for Rudy.
Of course, some people believe the best way to slow down a Chris Paul is to make them waste their energy on the defensive end. A backcourt of Roy and Rudy could certainly accomplish that…

Another factor that makes it more difficult to judge Rudy's defense
Joventut has a very unconventional defensive system. The whole team plays in the passing lanes. Their defensive strategy is to get as many steals (and as many resulting fast break opportunities) as possible. Because of this, Joventut leads the ACB league in steals by a large margin. The top 3 players in the ACB league in steals per game are Rudy and his teammates Ricky Rubio and Lubos Barton.

So there's an Either/Or question here.
EITHER:
Rudy’s a defensive cheater by nature, one who is not fundamentally sound, choosing to gamble on steal attempts
even though it gives up scoring chances when the steal attempt is unsuccessful
OR:
That’s just the Joventut defensive scheme, and Rudy’s execution of that scheme is a symptom
not of his defensive shortcomings, but of his coachability – his willingness to execute the team strategy.
If so, then applying that play-the-system/follow-the-coach character to Nate’s defensive system
would result only in Rudy playing defense precisely as Nate wants him to.
Well?
Which is it, Rudy?
I guess Nate will find out in training camp . . .
Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

It cost me $4.50 for a package of game 1 and 2, so it shouldnt be anymore than that for game 2, and if DKV wins, you will probably also get game 3 included. Trust me on this though, if you got a few extra bucks to spend, Rudy is well worth it…
