How Paul Allen can get Russell Westbrook

This from True Hoop:

Alan Hahn of Newsday: "There was no frozen envelope, no conspiracy. But now, after the Knicks wound up with the sixth pick from the NBA draft lottery Tuesday night, there are many options for Donnie Walsh in what he calls the 'second stage' of the Knicks' rebuilding process. 'Now,' Walsh said, 'our work starts.' It starts with shopping the pick with the intention of packaging it with one of those hefty contracts on the team's bloated payroll in an effort to get some desperately needed salary-cap relief, which, for Walsh, is always Job 1. 'I think we'll look at everything,' Walsh said."

Trade our #13 pick to New York for their #6 and Eddy Curry. Paul Allen buys him out and the Blazers get Westbrook.

That would be ironic...

...given that we sent NY the Knick that made Curry redundant. It would also be ironic were the Knicks to have to spend two lottery picks (#2 in 2006-LMA, and #9 in 2007-Noah) to acquire Curry Chicken, and another to get RID of him.

For that to work, we’d have to send ‘em Raef’s salary. We don’t have any other albatrosses on our payroll. I’m not sure I’d buy Curry out, though-once he knows his place, he might be a useful piece of the bench. Unlike Zach Randolph, he doesn’t have any off-court issues; he’s just a big fat black hole that doesn’t play D-and also unlike Zach, doesn’t hit the boards.

That said, I think we can find better ways to move up in the draft then taking on Eddy Curry’s Eddy Curry-sized contract

by EngineerScotty on May 21, 2008 5:12 PM PDT   0 recs

I'd rather have Z-Bo

Than Eddy Curry.

At least Z-Bo DOES sumthin’. Curry is just a lump of goo, sitting out there taking up space.

I know we isn’t gonna get Z-Bo, and I don’t want Z-Bo, but Curry…. (shudder).

It would be HILARIOUS if what you describe does happen, where they spend two picks to get him (which was crazy then) and then another pick to send him off—I know his value is way down, but is it THAT down? You can’t even give him away, you gotta give up a nice draft pick in a good draft? Yikes.

I can’t think of anyone who would want him, of course, with his fatness and absolute worthlessness on the court and heart problem that could kill him at any moment. Since he does nothing but score, you gotta make him the focal point of the offense, or he adds NOTHING. It astounds me every time I think about it, I can’t wrap my head around it.

A man who takes up that much space, is 7 feet tall, can leap reasonably well and dunks all the time, struggles to grab 5 boards a game and can’t even use his big body to muscle up who he defends. He’s got a big ol’ meat head too, like he shared needles with Barry Bonds.

What did Eddy Curry ever do to me, you ask? He murdered my family, that’s what. And ever since then, I swore revenge by talking bad about him on websites he would never read. Someday, my deep emotional wounds will drive me to the drink of madness, but not without a lot of bad-talkin’ about Curry along the way. He’s earned my disgust.

Question

When does Curry’s deal run out? Does this cut into our flexibility and cap space? Just for a prospect PG? All I know about Westbrook is what I read here, so I think he’s in the running for the new Jesus, but I doubt he’d be worth funking up the cap space plan.

If Curry’s deal runs out before 2009, disregard me completely. If it did though, I doubt he’d be so untradeable.

If Westbrook was worth it, hell, screw cap space.

Three more years, $30 million

I didn’t research this much. Maybe Jerome James would cost less, but I think the Knicks would insist on Curry being part of the deal. Whatever, the point is that the Blazers can do a quick and dirty deal for a pick that will land them Westbrook. I probably wouldn’t take on Curry’s deal, but the Knicks are LOADED with other players they’d like to dump.

I like the idea

As long as Westbrook is worth it, of course. I’ll leave that to those who know him more than I. Since he falls as far as 12, 13 on many pre-draft boards (which don’t mean everything, of course) makes me wonder if he’s worth taking a huge economic burden and preventing any cap flexibility to take on a big trade or whatevers.

With Paul Allen as our owner, we can certainly do something like you suggest though, and I’d be fine with it. Ain’t my money, and if it gets us the right player, huzzah for everything.

I know the Knicks wanna/need to win now, but their first lottery pick they get to use since Channing Frye is pretty important, right? It’ll be a steep price to take it away, and it’ll have to be a hidden gem that people aren’t pimping yet… a Brandon Roy-esque steal.

Unless Westbrook is that dude, I dunno.

The idea could really work, though.

We'd have to throw in Raef for contract-matching.

It might work then, but we’ll have cashed in our R.E.C. for Westbrook.
Dunno if that’s good enough use of the R.E.C.

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

That's exactly what I'm wondering

Just seems like we can do better, but again, I is not no Westbrook expert, no how nuh uh no way SENOR.

Yuk!!

Double Yk. No way we give the RLEC for a draft prospect that no one knows how will translate in the NBA.

Teams Open For Trades

During a short interview from New Jersey, Presti declined to specifically discuss prospects or what areas he hopes to address on a squad that finished 20-62 last season.

He said the Sonics are open to shopping the fourth pick. Seattle also has the No. 24 pick, four picks in the second round and a combined four first-round selections in the next two drafts. The bucks GM also said they might be looking to move or trade their first round pick.

by billyjoejack on May 21, 2008 7:01 PM PDT   0 recs

Seattle

could really use Frye. I don’t want to see him go, but for the 4th pick it might be worth it.

If they need a PF

Couldn’t they just use the #4 pick to draft Love?

by trk on May 21, 2008 8:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

A number of teams may be open to trading.

My guess is KP will target anyone and everyone from pick #5 to #10 for a trade. He’ll try to get as high as he can since he doesn’t like to leave anything to chance.

Eh?

Why go after Westbrook? He’s just a skinnier Jarrett Jack.

When we trade jack

We need somebody to be mad at.

by Sabonis4Ever on May 21, 2008 11:39 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Uh, no.

Dude is an athletic freak, with reflexes like a cat.

Jarrett has reflexes like a tree.

Russell Westbrook is the un-Jack.

by EngineerScotty on May 22, 2008 11:25 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm convinced Damir's account is hacked

He said something similar about Devin Harris, saying he was a smaller Jarrett Jack who can’t play defense.

I was all huhhhh? Then I was like, whaaaaaaa? And I went whooooooo?

I haven’t REALLY watched Westbrook, but from the highlights he’s dunking and crunking all over people. He looks really fast and athletic. Not 100% like Jack, no.

I miss open threads

Watching damir find every way possible to type about the refs without cussing. The guy is creative.

by Sabonis4Ever on May 22, 2008 12:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Me too

About halfway through the season I started having to miss almost all the open threads cause I was a busy beaver, and had to watch the games on DVR. While I loved skipping the commercials, I missed the open threads and getting more out of the game from people’s smart comments.

And see, this is where the cussing ban helps the site, because I’m sure Damir and a lot of others (including me sometimes, or all the time in real life) would cuss all the time if we could but then we wouldn’t have creative non-cussing like what Damir has to do during open game threads.

Just another reason why Dave is KP. He KNOWS.

Defense! *STOMP* *STOMP* Defense!

NBAdraft.net says:

“Really excels defensively and has a chance to develop into a great defender … His anticipation for steals and his on ball defensive ability are special.”

DraftExpress.com says:

“Defensively, Westbrook is nothing short of outstanding, as evidenced by the phenomenal work he did locking down the three top scoring guards in the Pac-10 this season, O.J. Mayo, Jerryd Bayless, and James Harden. He is long, strong and very fundamentally sound, getting into a terrific defensive stance on every possession, moving his feet incredibly well, and being absolutely tenacious getting after his matchup. His wingspan, combined with his huge hands and outstanding anticipation skills make him a terror in the passing lanes, and this is a big factor why he spends so much time in transition offensively.”

by MiledAnimal on May 21, 2008 9:59 PM PDT   0 recs

Draft OJ... not Westbrook

OJ will be a better deffensive player in the NBA and he could be a scoring punch when we need it… he’s going to be real real super real good.

by Blazermaniac77 on May 22, 2008 12:08 AM PDT   0 recs

It would be nice to get a defensive player

To put Westbrook in perspective, a quote from Draftexpress about our own Jarrett Jack:

What makes Jack stand out a bit in this excellent class of PG’s in this draft is his defense. He is probably the best defensive PG in this draft along with Aaron Miles, but has more potential at the NBA level with this skill because of his excellent size and body. His footwork is absolutely fantastic and he never takes off a possession. He’ll get right in the grill of his opponent and won’t give him an inch. He is very physical and always plays the game with a lot of intensity, not having any problem getting scrappy or taking the charge. He has good anticipation skills and excellent hands, which makes him a constant threat in the passing lanes. He will not risk his defensive position to come up with the steal like other PG’s in this draft who average a little higher in the steals category. He’s also a very good rebounder for a PG, averaging 5.5 for the season. Georgia Tech is the best defensive team in the ACC and Jack is a huge part of that.

Westbrook will take a few years before he is effective on offense…and we’ll see about his defense. I’m not sure Westbrook is the answer Nate or the Blazers are looking for….but I’m all for it if Pritchard chooses Westbrook to wear red and black.

by neilan on May 22, 2008 5:07 AM PDT   0 recs

Great post

Doesn’t sound like our Jarrett, does it? Makes me wonder about Jack’s ankle. Reportedly it hasn’t been right since his senior year in college. I think he was going to seek yet more treatment for it this summer. If Jack could defend anything like Draftexpress had said-and if he learned to run a fast break-he’d be a pretty nice point guard for the Blazers. But with a bum ankle, that’s probably not in the cards. (I tried to play hoops on a bad ankle for 6 months once, and I know you just can’t get it done.)

I am sure that

it will come down to ‘WORKOUTS’. Jack might be asked to help out at the workouts and maybe some 1-0n-1’s. It would be better if Roy helped out instead of Jack but as long as Jack is gone and KP comes up with the best PG possible for this team.

I thought that the players

didnt play with the prospects, im pretty sure their agents wouldnt allow it.

by raging WebTed on May 22, 2008 7:22 AM PDT   0 recs

I know that

Gilbert Arenas did some one-on-one workouts with Chris Paul when the latter was trying out for teams prior to the 2005 draft—there was a big article on TrueHoop about it about a week back. I don’t know how common it is, but it’s certainly not impermissible.

by BlazersOrBust on May 22, 2008 9:32 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think that was a sanctioned "team" workout.

I think that is something Paul’s trainer set up because he was also tight with Gilbert. I believe Paul was trying to get in shape for the combine or whatever and also for individual workouts.

I can’t remember a single time when a team’s players have shown up to work out with draft prospects at a league-sanctioned pre-draft workout. The CBA may have something to do with prohibiting teams from requiring players to participate in actual team practices in the offseason. That is why the coaches couldn’t participate when all the Blazers showed up early this past summer.

Thought the same thing

I am pretty certain that players are not allowed to play against draftees

Sometimes I feel like I'm going in different directions...
