Rudy's gonna join the Blazers!

"Rudy Fernandez is apparently set to join the Portland Trailblazers according to word we got from well-placed local sources here in Spain."

http://www.draftexpress.com/blog/Jonathan-Givony/

What do you think Rudy's impact will be next year?  The future?  I'm excited and I hope he can gain weight and become a SF.  Does he have any PG skills?

I'm just glad he's getting here!  And I need to take up more words.  So oh yeah!

AHHHHH

you beat me to the post!!!
but i hope he doesn’t play SF here, he need a lot of bulk and even then he’s still a bit small at 6’6.
i see him as a dynamic scorer off the bench, running wild at a neck breaking pace with Sergio(hopefully) in the second unit. BRoy’s playing time comes down to 30min and he’ll stay fresh for the 2008 Final where he will win the Final’s MVP trophy, which he will immediately give to me for my pinpoint forecast.

zzzzzzzzzzzzz........snore.........zzzzzzzzzz

what else is new,
we trade Chicago a sack of magic beans for Lamarcus,
we turn Telfiar into Roy,
we win the lottery and draft some guy named Oden,
some win streak like 13 games or something on the third youngest team in history,
the last member of the J*ilblazers gets his ass booted, and his salary is off our cap,
and now we have the best guy in some place called Europe coming over for pennies to the euro.

All this good news is getting old, next thing you know we will of won the lottery and theres some guy in Memphis who people say would do well here in the Rose City.

super cool

I agree with the Canz though, I see Roy at the Point and Rudy at SG, not Roy at SG and Rudy at SF. this might take a half a season or so to materialaize, but it will happen.

by mark twain on May 2, 2008 10:30 PM PDT   0 recs

Roy can't guard quick PGs

That lineup will be used at times, but not full time.

I’d be very surprised if Rudy is in the opening day starting lineup. He’ll eventually work his way into a crunch time lineup of Roy, Rudy, Webster or Outlaw, Aldridge and Oden but this may not happen immediately. Even once he’s adjusted to the NBA, I think Rudy might be used off the bench a la Ginobili.

But...

Maybe Rudy can. He looks really quick, has super long arms, and his lack of strength wouldn’t be as exposed. Never underestimate the value of long arms on defense… Think Prince, or Durrant’s ability to guard much quicker SGs because he can stay a meter or so farther away than most other SGs on defense. While I think he would have problems, I’m not sure if a slight difference in defense is enough to cancel out what he could potentially bring to the court overall.

But we have GO in the middle

to discourage expeditionary forays in the paint. With Rudy and Roy whoever is guarding the quick point guard can release when they are beat and be all alone for the outlet pass after the block!

Chris Paul absolutely destroyed Kidd. There is no way Roy will be able to defend the point guard position.

Its up for debate

No one can guard Paul, Parker or DWill by themselves, it will take a team effort. However we can inflict some damage on them, like we did with Joel vs. GS. GS wanted to play smallball and we FORCED them to play big?-ball cause Joel was too much for Biedrins to handle.

We would have Rudy post up Parker o rPaul every time and try to make it a zero sum game @ PG and hope that Webster/Outlaw can take a leap forward in defending off the ball and Oden and LMA can clean up any thing that gets past them.

Or we could use zone to neutralize them.

Either way it should be fin to watch.

I think that is a bit lofty....

First because I don’t think he’ll play 30 minutes a game in his rookie year. In a year or two expect that production, but for now I don’t think he’ll play much more than 20 minutes a game. Because we have no clue how he’ll play in the NBA. But that’s just my opinion.

Oden+Roy+Aldridge+Rudy=Dynasty. Believe

by OdenRoyLMA on May 2, 2008 11:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Hes pretty good though

Lets compare him to Sergio to try to get an idea of how good he is. Sergio had a PER of 12.9 in the ACB league the year before we drafted him. That is about the same level of production as Blake and Jack achieved in the NBA last year. Sergio was the 11th man on the Spanish Senior National Team last year and played about 2 minutes per game. This year he may not even make the team.

Rudy has a PER of 31.3 in the ACB league this year. That is about the level of production that Micheal Jordan was able to achieve in the NBA in his prime. Rudy is a was a starter playing around 25 minutes per game on the World Champion Spanish team last year, and is almost certain to be a starter for the Spanish team in the Olympics this year as well.

Speaking of the Olympics, they should give us a good chance to see how Rudy fares against top American players. Spain and the US are in the same group, so they will play in the preliminaries. There is also a fairly good chance that both teams will advance and continue winning until they meet again in the finals.

by trk on May 3, 2008 12:21 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

On second thouhgt

You may be right. There are a lot of differences between basketball in the NBA and basketball in the international leagues. It will no doubt take some time to adjust. However, If we are talking about his second year instead of his rookie year, I still think the estimates I gave are very reasonable.

by trk on May 3, 2008 12:53 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

However

Spain and USA also have China in their group and only 2 can advance I think. The games are in China. 1.5 billion pissed off angry people are not going to be smiling at the USA and Spain if China does not advance. Did I mention the games are in China? Do you think there are any basketball tickets left for outside of China? Not a pretty thought. Referees are human.

I think the key there is "by the end of the year".

Said THAT way, I absolutely agree.

He’ll have the sort of year LMA had last year, I think, starting the season in learning mode, and being a starter by year’s end.
(Of course, his bench origins will be because of his need for adaptation and development, NOT injury like LMardridge.)

Everyone 'member

We all hope Rudy becomes another Manu, and Manu averaged like 8 points his rookie year, and Manu was like 64 years old. It takes time to adjust.

If Rudy becomes the SG and Roy the PG, we’ll have two good playmaking scoring guards who can do it all on the court (assuming Rudy comes as advertised in a few years). That’s pretty sweet. Yeah, we won’t be able to guard Paul at all, but we can’t guard him now and we still beat ‘em. We got much, much, much better interior defense than Dallas (and most of the league soon) with LMA and Oden and Pryzzle, and if the quick PG thing still becomes a problem we’ll have to deal with it as a team. In case we don’t get Devin Harris or sumthin’, I mean.

Paul, Parker, Deron, they kill whoever guards ‘em. The whole team needs to help on those guys. I decided that while we need better defense at PG for sure, we’ll have more than enough big defense to help out on the super quicks of the world. As long as everyone is a SMART defender, we got another wing who is a decent defender, and Oden and LMA defend like we know they can defend, then I’m not too worried about Chris Paul.

Like I said before, we beat them just fine this past season and we’re only getting better—they ain’t. If Paul has another gear in him, yikes. He’ll be the best ever then, because he’s awesome. We still handled that team pretty good-like, and aside from having no one who can keep up with Paul we more than match up with them at the other positions AND on the offensive side of the ball.

I know we could use a better PG, but the more I think about it the more I wonder if it’ll turn out like last year’s SF crisis…

I also know I love the ball in Roy’s hands all the time, and my only hesitation of him being the fulltime PG is dribbling the ball up the court all dang day and guarding other PGs—not cause he can’t, but because I don’t want him fatigued. If he and another guy like Rudy are capable of splitting the duties, then it’ll be just like how it was last season when Roy was on the floor with another PG (like Jack or Blake.

Couldn't...

we just put Westbrook in the game when we play against teams who have quick guards? We can do anything as long as we are flexible.

If somebody hits you with an object you should beat the hell out of them.-Charles Barkley

by Winchester on May 3, 2008 9:25 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

EXACTLY my thought

Have Westbrook in there for defense, and running the break at times—if it slows down into a half court set, give the ball to Roy, and those two plus Rudy would be a GREAT versatile guard rotation. I would have Roy and Rudy start if we did this. Plus, it gives us a chance to draft and develop Westbrook, without having to put all of our hopes on a point guard that we draft or trade for.

With Rudy coming, and Roy’s ability to play PG, or SG with the ball all the time, I think Westbrook is a great fit. If you draft Westbrook expecting him to come in and be the PG of the future, then I think that’s a big risk. But in the situation I just outlined, I think it would be perfect, and also allows us to not have to do a whole lot of movement this offseason. Use Jack and our 13 to move up, get westbrook, wait for next year.

Unless we win the lottery of course.

Kyle Lowry of Memphis

Kyle Lowry was the 24th pick the year before Rudy. He played 10 games his rookie year, averaged 5.6 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 3.2 APG, & 1.2 TO’s. I think that is a fair expectation of Rudy.

If we do land Rudy, we have to play him

That announcement is weaselly at best, but if the Blazers do land Rudy, we have to play him; I’d say 20 to 25 minutes/game. And, he should play at SG, not SF. So how do we divvy up the minutes? If we have 96 guard minutes a game, probably 36+ go to B-Roy (some SG; some PG); 20 go to Rudy (SG) leaving 40 to be split among our herd of combo/PGs (Jack, Blake, Sergio, Wafer, maybe Martell, and new draft pick). That doesn’t work.

If Rudy comes, it will take a massive overhaul in both personnel and playing style (e.g., more running, points in paint) for it to work. Is Nate really up for a more up-tempo game? (Rudy’s strength and I’d say a Blazer strength that was woefully underutilized this year.)

I hope Rudy does come and we do play him in an up-tempo style, but then signing Rudy may start the dominoes falling throughout our existing team (better that the dominoes fall among our guards rather than our bigs).

I’m still not convinced we should count our Rudy chickens before the Euro eggs hatch, but I hope I see Rudy running with the Blazers next year.

by vcubed on May 3, 2008 12:58 PM PDT   0 recs

Like this past year, we'll have a three guard rotation.

Roy, Rudy and Rose. The 3-R backcourt. Steve Blake will get Sergio minutes as our fourth guard, but he doesn’t have and R’s in his name, so I doubt he fits in well. Jack and Sergio are really going to feel left out next year.

OK

I’ll try and forget Rose because I think getting him would require too many of our assets, and KP is going to be conservative with this team. Not take big risks. I won’t be surprised if the PG situation remains entirely the same in November. Another year for Jack and Sergio to develop and another year for Blake’s steadiness to shepherd the other young Blazers. Could that be?

One reason why I contemplate KP going after Rose is I see KP as someone who doesn’t compromise. He wants the best PG and the best fit for this team. Rose might qualify. I don’t know. Just a thought. And if the top 1 or 2 pick is available without having to give up too much, maybe? If we are agreed that the status quo from last year is unacceptable, that we need a change, then we gotta take a serious look at Rose.

But he DOESN’T make sure to get EVERYONE’S man.

He doesn’t seem to go for the guy who’s at the top of everyone’s list, which describes Rose.
Pritchard gets the guy he likes more than anyone else does right now.

The exception, of course, is Oden, but we DID luck into that one.
Blake, Roy, Przybilla, Rudy a year ago, LaMarcus (when the #2-pick team preferred Ty Tom):
