The big 3
think most of us can be in agreement that Oden, LMA, and Roy will form our "big 3", but how does this stack up against other big 3s? I am not talking about the McHale, Parrish, and Bird type of big 3, but historical big 3s. For example how does our big 3 stack up against the Three's Company big 3? Do we even compare to Tolkien's big 3? I am hoping the insightful BEdgers can come up with some interesting big 3s and compare and contrast them to O.R.L. (I am obviously also advocating that we call our big 3 O.R.L. as well.).
Let me start the ball rolling with one of my favorite big 3s; Einstein's 1905 papers.
First off we have the photoelectric effect, where Einstein postulates that light is not necessarily a wave, which got the ball rolling for quantum mechanics, lasers, AMO physics, etc.
I am afraid that unless Greg Oden averages 50pts/g,50rebs/g, and 10blks/g next year nothing will compare to this seminal and nobel prize winning piece of work.
Special theory of relativity. A lot of interesting things come out from this paper and it revolutionizes the way we think about time and space. It also caused some religious uproar due to its' possible support of moral relativism. It opens the door way for better explanations of phenomena at the level of the universe and the atomic scale as well. If you like your GPS system then you definitely like this paper. It also paved the way for General Relativity.
Again, it is going to be tough for any of the Blazers, together or alone, to top this one.
Brownian motion. Explains a phenomena, the random jiggling of molecules, that had been observed for centuries, but never explained. I believe this work was later improved upon by Nazi sympathizer Debye.
If any of Einstein's big 3 are in reach of O.R.L. it is definitely this one. I think a 20/12/2 season by Oden, a 18/5/7 season for Roy, and 17/8/2 by LMA will firmly let O.R.L. leap past these giggling molecules.
Lets hear yours. I am waiting with baited breath for TominHawaii's response.

Boy, Tom sure gets a lot of love around here lately! (not that that's a bad thing)
I would say I would compare them to the big three of Axl, Slash, and Izzy – Man I miss the real Guns N Roses.

John, Paul and George=Big Three
And that lock down defender we need (the “glue guy” if you will) ......Ringo.
I am afraid Jack is Pete Best in this scenario
Nate and KP=Brian Epstien and Sir George Martin

Einstein was a smart math guy.
And, I have to say, math is more applicable to life than basketball abilities. But then again, this is Einstein level math. I’m sure it affects me daily, but I’m glad I don’t have to know it. That alone might give the edge back to our three.
But there have been many good big three’s throughout history. Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great and Marcus Crassus did pretty well, (SPQR forever!) at least until Crassus died. Octavian, Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus were alright for a sequel, but Lepidus was kind of a third wheel.
But there are other great trios. Mickey, Donald and Goofy. Athos, Aramis and Porthos. Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3. I don’t think our guys have gotten that kind of notoriety yet.

Couldn´t you mention three Romans who didn´t went to civil war?
Did you mention the “Three” Musketeers when everybody knows that they were actually “Four”?.
Did you choose a mouse to represent Roy, a mouse!, the epitome of cowardice?.
Did you select a duck to represent Aldridge, a duck!, the symbol of awkwardness?.
Did you pick a dog to … ok, I go with the dog.
At the end you saved your life with the dog and Mario.

A Reply.
All great Romans engaged in a little bit of civil war now and again. Its not like it hurt the state that badly.
Rudy is most certainly D’artagnan.
That mouse has been on more merchandise than Sean Connery, been in more movies than Willian Howard Taft, is bigger than Jessica Alba, is sexier than TominHawaii and has more Fanposts than Pope John Paul II. I think he makes an adequate model for Roy.
You might have a point about the duck, He did become the Oregon Duck’s mascot. But then DuckBlazer Dave might have an issue with that, not me.
That thing’s a dog?
Mario is alright, but it’s Luigi who really saves the day.

This is a Tough One
If they’re Three’s Company, then LMA is Janet. Who would be Chrissy? She was so dumb. And then who’s Mr. Furley?
Since I don’t see color, I can only compare black people to white people and vice versa. I say the Blazers Big 3 should be compared to the Beastie Boys.

"The Almighty Three".
That would be Mingus’ longest-running rhythm section, with himself on bass, Jaki Byard on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums.
Or maybe Rock-Paper-Scissors, with Oden as the unshakeable Rock, Roy as the slashing, active Scissors,
and LaMardridge as the versatile, adaptable Paper.
My personal preference is for the Mings/Byard/Richmond (whom I adore) comparison,
but I have a feeling the rock-paper-scissors thingy could have some serious popular traction.

by QualityPie on May 17, 2008 2:49 PM PDT 0 recs
Oh - I should specify who's who:
Roy is obviously Mingus, the creator and leader, the brains of the unit.
LMA is the more spritely and unconventional Jaki Byard.
And Oden is the raw power of Dannie Richmond.
If we’re REALLY lucky, Rudy will be the basketball equivalent of Eric Dolphy,
and we’ll have the NBA equivalent of Mingus’ early-sixties touring line-up.
To hear that unit, listen to Antibes ‘61 (Atlantic) or anything from the 1964 tour, including
Town Hall Concert (Fantasy/Jazz Workshop), Cornell 1964 (Blue Note), or Mingus In Europe (Enja). Wicked stuff.

Han, Luke, and Leia
GO’s our Han—a charismatic scoundrel who gets into scrapes every now and again (juking on five-foot girls, dunking on nine-foot baskets) but possessor of a heart of gold. We never thought he’d be ours, but now that he’s part of the outfit we can’t believe our good fortune.
“Roy Skywalker” rolls off the tongue like it was meant to be, right? A preternaturally gifted individual who reformed a ragtag band into one of the most fearsome fighting units the galaxy had ever seen, a cool-under-pressure leader who’s not afraid to take and make big shots (see: scoop layup around Bosh, Death Star trench run).
That leaves LMA as Princess Leia, not only for his Krispy Kreme-softness on the low block, but also for being the male hardbody equivalent to the scrumptious princess in Return of the Jedi. LMA would look pretty darn good wearing red silk boxers and chained to a slug.

That was the first thing that came to mind.
But I thought opening with the biggest of all big threes would cause people to think that there was nothing left worth trying for. But as the ball is already rolling on this one, your timing is pretty good. But what makes your timing excellent is that today (Sunday) is the traditional Feast of the Holy Trinity.
