I have a confession to make about the L**ers

After last nights game between LA and Utah, I realized something, and I thought this place, though it might produce the harshest of responses, is the best place for me to confess this most deadly of sins. I'm rooting for the L**kers to win it all this year.

There, I said it! It feels kind of good to get it off my chest. Now, that being said, let me give you my reasoning so you at least know where I'm coming from. Keep in mind this is just my opinion, and I'm not pretending that I have some amazing reasons for rooting against the below teams, it's simply based of emotion and opinion.

Why I'm not rooting for:

Spurs: Can't stand their flopping and whining. I also think that they are pretty boring to watch, and they encompass a lot of what I don't like about the NBA sometimes (again, with the flopping, whining, and crying). Finally, I have a sick desire to NOT see them win 2 championships in a row for some reason.

Hornets: Sorry, I know that this is probably the most popular choice for people this year, especially Blazer fans, but I just don't like them either. Pretty much I'm the guy who roots against the team everyone else roots for, and that's my reason! Plus, I KNOW that they are going to be a thorn in our sides for the foreseeable future, so I'm just getting used to hating them now.

Pistons: Yeah, so, I pretty much root against Rasheed Wallace, so that's why I don't root for the Pistons. We could debate this all day, but the fact of the matter is that Rasheed represents everything about the previous crop of Blazers that turned everyone off. I still rooted for our team no matter what, but was so glad to see him go. I don't need to list all of the reasons for rooting against him, either you agree with me or you don't.

Cavs: When it comes to the Eastern Conference playoffs right now, this is the team that I am rooting for. Mostly because I hate the Celtics so much. If it came to a L**ers VS Cavs Finals, I would be rooting for the L**ers over the Cavs because of the reasons I want to see the L**rs win, not because I'm rooting AGAINST the Cavs. When it comes to the Celts or Pistons, I'm not only rooting for the L**rs, but AGAINST the Celts or Pistons. Make sense?

Celtics: It's wierd. Before this year, I never had a problem with KG. I respected his talent, and sort of felt bad for him that he was surrounded by scrubs for so long. Then, we played the Celtics in Boston. His tough guy attitude, and the way he tried to intimidate our team (though it obviously worked), really turned me off. Also, I'd rather see a team who has been built from the ground up win than one that was manufactured over one summer by aquiring TWO all star/hall of famers.

Why I am rooting for the Lakers:

My mom and I argue about this all the time. She says she'd never like Kobe, even if he was a Blazer from the start. I say this is complete hogwash. If Kobe spent his entire career in Portland, she would root for him. We also have the same argument about Shaq by the way. She's wearing blinders in my opinion, and so is anyone who says they would never have rooted for either of those guys had they worn our beloved uniform. Hell, we rooted for BONZI, RASHEED, RUBEN, and ZACH.

Back to my main point. I happen to think that Kobe, looking from an unbiased point of view, is one of the most amazing ballers to play the game. He is CLUTCH. Just from a bball fan's point of view, he's entertaining to watch. Also, I love how he was ready to bolt on this team, then had to suck it up and stay, and then eat his words, which he has done. He has pointed out on numerous occasions that his team is to get credit for the success, and has shown it in his play. This team really has been built from the ground up since Shaq left, and has obviously come together at the right time.

I also would love to see him get a ring without Shaq.

I like Lamar Odom a lot

I also like Derek Fisher

*DISCLAIMER

These opinions are valid only for the 2008 Playoffs. Once the 08/09 season starts, my undying hatred for L**ers will continue as I'm fully aware that they will be standing in the way of our success for many years to come. By the way, go figure that every time we become an awesome team, we have to get by them to succeed. That is annoying!

you were doing ok....

... until you said this: “I like Lamar Odom a lot.”

The same Odom that has tried to start a fight with the Blazers multiple times in the past few years?

True

I guess it’s his game I like a lot, I don’t remember him being a punk, my bad!

by mark twain on May 17, 2008 9:55 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yep

I had that exact same thought.

by bocious on May 17, 2008 10:44 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I lost all respect for you at the Lamar Odom part.

Spurs: Disagree with you. They may whine a bit, but at least they’re built around a character guy like Tim Duncan.

Hornets: Disagree with you. Chris Paul is the funnest thing to watch since Magic Johnson.

Pistons: Disagree with you. Who didn’t like Sheed, even if he was temperamental? I sure loved him. Me and my friends used to imitate him in pickup games. If the general consensus was that you were being a jerk, you’d get a T. Person with the most T’s gets the ‘Sheed award.

Cavs: Disagree with you. Who doesn’t want to see someone dunking over KG, not showing any regard for human life? Who doesn’t want to see him get waxed by Paul Pierce and then slap him on the back and say it’s ok. Not hip with him yelling at his mom, but come on—this guy is so fun to watch, and usually pretty classy.

Celtics: Disagree with you. KG is my fav. player in the NBA, bar none, because he has a burning passion to win, and isn’t a jerk about it. He’s fiercely competitive without being a moron. That’s cool.

Lakers: Odom is a dweeb. Sorry. He is. Kobe is alright, although I wasn’t a big fan of him after watching “The Kobe Video”...I like Derek Fisher…otherwise, not a big fan of their team or organization.

Thanks PA, KP, Nate, BRoy, LMA, GO, 'Tell, Trout, JJ's, Buffet, Blake (not Blakey), Thrilla Hundred-dolla Billa, McBob (just 'cuz you're cool), Sergio (just 'cuz you've got flash), and Raef (ummm...just 'cuz)....and Dean Demo, Maurice, Monty (You rock Monty!), Bill Bayno (good luck with your new job), Bobby, Jay, and everyone else I'm forgetting (scouts, other front office people) who made the Return of Rip City possible, including the media (Mike B., Casey, Dave, Ben). And tominhawaii. Can't forget him.

I don't like KG...

... but why do people hate Sheed so much?

I loved Sheed.

by jksnake99 on May 17, 2008 11:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

My issue with sheed

Was simply that he was a guy who couldn’t lead (not his fault, but the blazers for putting him there and refusing to recognize) and that he never reached his potential. Rasheed COULD HAVE BEEN an amazing player. He could have been special, but he just never cared enough to do so. If Aldridge is Sheed minus the head case… then he’s going to be a hall of famer because he also has an incredible work ethic. Still, I wouldn’t mind a little sheed fire in him.

I, however, don’t hate sheed and never really did. The blazers used him incorrectly and tried to force him into something he wasn’t.

Here's to being hated. Come on #1 pick!

also

it should be pointed out, a lot of children watch basketball, and then play basketball themselves. ive heard that some 10-11-12 year olds have been much more difficult to coach as they think it’s okay to throw tantrums like ‘sheed.

I'm okay with Hornets, Pistons, Cavs ...

I can’t stand the Spurs either. And doubly so since I have two annoying colleagues at work who are HUGE Spurs fans. I really want to see them get pouty, and I really don’t want to hear them gloating … again.

I can’t stand the Celtics either. That city and their sports columnists really need a big dose of SHHHOOOOOSH!!!

As for the Lakers, I would root for them to beat either of the two teams mentioned above. But against the three I’d rather see win, you can bet I hoping Kobe never gets another title and realizes he could never win one without Shaq.

by bfan on May 17, 2008 9:41 AM PDT   0 recs

I'm rooting for the Pistons

I like the way they truly do win with defense and execution. At least they do when they’re on and they’ve been on since they closed out Philadelphia. I actually still like Rasheed a lot, and I enjoy the chant they do that’s like call and response “DEEEETROIT” and then “BASKETBALLLL”, and they do that when they force turnovers, or when the team just plays well, kind of interchangeably. Anyway yeah. I dislike the teams that win because of star power, which is just about everyone else. And I like the fact that they looked exactly the same even when Chauncey Billups missed like 3 games in a row.

by ranma on May 18, 2008 11:23 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The only thing I was rooting for was for the Lakers tto beat the Jazz

The rest of the teams I could care less. I did find it weird that last night I found myself cheering when K*be hit that fall away 2 with the foul.

I suppose I want the Spurs or the Hornets to win it all to keep it in the west.

And I totally am with a lot of posters here when I say that I want Boston to fall flat on their faces.

Everyone seems to be rooting against the Spurs.

I thought we were trying to be like the Spurs. Same core group of guys, winning titles, or coming close, year after year. Does this mean everyone else is going to hate Portland in a few years? This extremely likable group of guys? I sure hope so!

I like the spurs

no hate here. I am rooting for NO though. Partially because I predicted them to win before the series. So far the play-offs are what I predicted except that I thought the lakers would wrap it up a game earlier. The Jazz are either better than I thought or the lakers are worse than I thought.

Here's to being hated. Come on #1 pick!

i like the way the l*kers play

in the triangle, and i too have come to begrudgingly admire kobe. hes not a nice guy, but neither was jordan.

also i think it’ll be good for the blazers to have a big rivalry with the l*kers in the next few years. we’ll be underdogs, younger, we have charismatic players—a rivalry with l.a. will get us on national tv much more than one with the jazz.

yeah

like I said, I’d totally agree with you if the Blazers were playing BBall right now and not sippin coors light on the golf course. But I honestly like them a lot more than most the other teams left in the playoffs, that’s all. I’ll go back to hating them when the playoffs are done, don’t you worry your pretty little head off about that!

by mark twain on May 17, 2008 11:49 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm going with the Hornets!

Anyone but the Lakers….even if it comes down to Boston vs. Lakers (the two teams I hate most in the NBA) “The NBA’s big market fantasy Championship” I am going with the Celtics….just because that’s how much I can’t stand the F*kers.

Now I agree that Kobe is one of the greatest ballers in the NBA and is an exciting player to watch….however he will never get my respect….and that’s not just because of the team he plays for…there is way more to the story.

by SHOOTS on May 17, 2008 12:21 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No coors

I think a few are working out, Martell, Oden….. those that are not working can afford better beer.

by ptwnblzr on May 21, 2008 11:43 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I have to root for the Spurs after seeing the last game

They were playing magnificent ball, with Parker, Oberto, and Duncan bounce-passing one assist after another to each other. Pretty! TP’s duel with CP in game 3 was amazing. Boring? Not those guys. And Darkstar is right, the Spurs are our spiritual ancestors.

I will say that I’ve had a harder time hating this Laker team than previous ones. They’re a bunch of guys with a Blazer connection (Walton), some tragedy (Odom, Fisher), some infamy and redemption (Kobe) and lots of history and success (Jackson and Kobe). And they play hard and smart. I’m sure I’ll hate their guts again the first time we match up with them in the playoffs.

This brings up an interesting question: The Blazers are in the Northwest division and the Western Conference. Since the Blazers missed the playoffs this season, shouldn’t we fans have been rooting for Utah, who won our division, and then for whichever team wins the West?

Everyone knows that K#obe has faked every injury he has ever had just to look like Jordan. I bet K#be gets “the flu” in the conference finals. He’ll fake that too so he can get some sort of sympathy. He’s faking his finger and back injury, just like Pau fakes taking showers. Oh, and Phil Jackson. Oh, Phil Jackson. I really hate him.

L*kers winning the championship wouldn't be the worst scenario

If the Celtics win with Doc Rivers, I think I may blow a casket. There’s something about not paying your dues and fighting upwards toward a title that bothers me. I feel like every team should face adversity and disappointment in the playoffs before rightfully crowned.

Same reason I’m hoping the Hornet lose and also because of their poor attitude on the court. Chris Paul may be an upstanding young man off the court, but on the court, he’s a punk. So is David West. Their team has a few screws loose and on the verge of losing control every game. Reminds me of the Blazers when they are overly emotion and got taken out of the game.

Well, bear in mind I am just poking a little fun

In all truth, I love Derek Fisher and I admire Kobe’s mad skillz, and in all truthness he is usually fairly humble and I like how he always has his family with him at press conferences, etc. Ever since the Colorado incident, he’s really made a point of it to be seen with his family. A+ from me there.

I just have a hard time when you can think Lamar Odom chop blocking Ray Allen is cool. That’s sick. Odom got SMOKED by KG and he took out his frustration on Allen like a junior high idiot. Not even ‘Sheed did that.
Towel in the face is bad, but running and checking the dude into the stands??! This ain’t hockey.

In all truth, I am hoping for Lakers vs. Celtics. KG and KB24 are the 2 most fierce competitors in the league. Would love to see them go at it.

Hopefully I haven’t offended you too greatly. I have meant everything with an Around-the-Horn attitude.

it's all good

I appreciate that. I get your point about Odom, that was super cheap and unclassy, I wish he would have done it to someone his own size like KG. In all reality, I don’t think there’s ever really a place for stuff like that unless there’s just no other choice. FOR EXAMPLE, I would have liked it if one of the Blazers had done something similar to KG during our first game against them when he wouldn’t stop jawing at us like a total biznitch, but our guys are too classy I suppose.

by mark twain on May 17, 2008 1:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Er...

You somehow fail to mention that, from a preponderance of evidence (especially the bloody t-shirt), Kobe clearly raped that Colorado desk clerk. As if that wasn’t enough: in an effort to get the heat off himself, Kobe threw Shaq under the bus, alleging that Shaq always paid off the women that HE was accused of sexually assaulting.

This is, as you said, a truly remarkable basketball player. He also, beneath the charm and good looks, is a despicable human being. That is why, quite apart from my distaste for all things LA, I could never root for this edition of the Fakers.

P.S. If you’re one of those who ask why the Colorado desk clerk settled, you might recall that her name was released to the media, after which she received numerous death threats. What would YOU-or, say, your sister-have done?

let's be honest

You don’t have any actual reason to call Kobe a “despicable human being.”

Who among us (who among any group of mere humans) is in a position to cast such a label upon Kobe or anyone else?

We are far too eager to judge and far too reluctant to extend understanding and forgiveness.

I wonder if the girl in Colorado is ready to extend understanding and forgiveness.

And OJ is out looking for the real killer

Come on. If you followed the Kobe case closely, it was obvious what happened. The only argument you could reasonably make in Kobe’s defense is that, in his deluded mind, no woman could say “No” and mean it. That’s essentially the explanation Kobe gave in his required post-settlement mea culpa.

Is it possible Kobe was truly sorry for his actions and is a changed man? There we DO get into the realm of the unknowable. But don’t tell me that I “have NO IDEA what happened between those two.” People close to me have been raped, and I’m not inclined to put on blinders just because a rapist is a fantastic athlete.

How come you didn't include the Pissed-ons in your poll?

You got everyone else who is still in the playoffs . . .

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

I'm not really cheering for anyone this playoffs

I am cheering against spurs, pistons, and celtics.

Ok, I can't stop thinking about this

This is a short list of things I would rather have happen, than the Lakers winning another championship:

LMA, Oden, and Roy traded to the Knicks for their three worst players
KP quits as the GM to write children books
Paul Allen sells the Blazers and they move to Arkansas
Everyone I have ever known or loved, never speak to me again
Blazers Edge close down
Osama Bin Laden become the US President
Zombies take over the mainland
All sports in the world disbanded

If it took the Blazers never winning another championship, to keep the Lakers from ever winning another championship, I would do it.

I hate Kobe the player, I can care less about him as a person. I really, really, really hate Phil Jackson. It is on the verge of wishing very tragic things to happen to him. I struggle with those feeling, because I like to be a nice guy. Actually, my favorite dream involves the Yankee’s airplane crashing into the Laker’s airplane.

In all seriousness

I would stop being a blazer fan if it meant zombies were real and attacked us.

And I was thinking that the Zombies were the least horrible part.
