Mock Draft based on Team Needs

This mock draft I created on www.realgm.com, ran one random lottery order and then drafted based on my own research on team needs and of the prospects.  I used www.draftexpress.com, www.espn.com, and www.nbadraft.net primarily for prospect info and as a basis for "big board" ratings.  Of course, many teams use a "Big Board" strategy and select always "Best Available Player" as far as how teams rank all the prospects.  But I find it hard to believe that when each team is refining their big boards that subconciously team needs are built into how teams view prospects.

Here is my primary question in this post:

If in fact this draft scenario were the outcome of the 2008 NBA draft, do you feel that the additions of:  PG D.J. Augustin (#13 overall), GF Kyle Weaver (#33), FC Nathan Jawai (int'l) (#36) and PG Goran Dragic (int'l) (#55) is good enough to keep building on the momentum and talent that our 2007 Blazers had toward our Championship hopes?  Or, do you think those draft picks aren't worth filling out our roster and we should start dreaming, hoping and wishing for some great moves out of KP?  Should Portland draft with those picks to get those guys, or should they shake it up with a trade?

Below is a list that I created that address what each teams needs are for this years draft:

  • 2008 NBA Draft Team Needs
  • Atlanta Hawks:  Center, Point Guard
  • Boston Celtics:  Best Available
  • Charlotte Bobcats: Scorer, Guard, Forward/Center
  • Chicago Bulls:  Center (7’0”), Scorer
  • Cleveland Cavaliers:  Forward/Center’s
  • Dallas Mavericks: Center, Power Forward, Point Guard
  • Denver Nuggets:  Center, Power Forward
  • Detroit Pistons: Post Player, Scorer
  • Golden State Warriors: Forward Center, Point Guard

  • Los Angeles Lakers:  Point Guard, Small Forward
  • Memphis Grizzlies:  Center, Power Forward
  • Miami Heat:  Post Player, Point Guard
  • Milwaukee Bucks:  Center, Small Forward
  • Minnesota Timberwolves:  Post Player, Shooting Guard
  • New Jersey Nets:  Shooting Guard, Scorer, Power Forward
  • New York Knicks:  Star Power, Scorer, Athletic Big Man
  • Orlando Magic:  Shooting Guard, Scorer
  • Philadelphia 76ers:  Point Guard, Shooting Guard, Center

  • Portland Trail Blazers:  Point Guard, Defender (
  • Sacramento Kings:  Shooting Guard, Post Player

Nice work.

However, I don’t think we will be picking a undersized point guard who is primarily a scorer. Augustin wouldn’t be an improvement over any of our current point guards, so why bring him in? I like Kyle Weaver but I don’t know much about the other two guys.

If it fills a need, if it fills a rebuilding situation. And my goal is to fill and rebuild and I am not going to be shortsighted.

Dwight Jaynes Article about a true point guard to preserve Roy's energy...

I think if Portland were to get a PG in the mold of DJ Augustin (whether it be a Lowry or Conely from Memphis or someone else), it would be a great move. We don’t need Chris Paul, we just need a guy who will fill a role perfectly.

http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=121091285840605900

If we already have B.Roy and Rudy Fernandez in the mix for guards, we can really use a speedy true point man. So in the mix, DJ Augustin could be a great addition with out having to trade away any other talent. Personally, when I see a guy like Guard Eric Gordon taken at 10, we should manuever to get that GUY at that pick. Eric Gordon would be awesome, but realistically, DJ Augusting would shore up our guard talent very very well.

The thing about Kyle Weaver is that he has the lock-down defensive skill that Portland is lacking. He can play defense on the 1,2, or 3, and would need to keep developing his shooting to be a real player at the NBA level. However, he does fit the Defensive Wing need of the Blazers.

interesting

I don’t think of Augustin as a true point guard. To me he seemed more of a Damon Stoudamire type player: a good shooter but not a good distrubutor.

Point guard

“But that doesn’t make him a point guard any more than it made Michael Jordan a point guard.”

It should be noted that during their 2nd 3-peat, the Bulls really didn’t have a point guard. The perimeter players in their starting lineup were 6’6” G/F Ron Harper, 6’6” G/F Micheal Jordan, and 6’7” G/F Scottie Pippen. That worked out pretty well in their Triangle Offense, since the perimeter players in that system are all supposed to be well-rounded players that are pretty interchangeable and share ball-handling duties.

Outside of Rose & Bayless,

I don’t like any of the PG’s available. I see us trading the pick, or trading for a PG that we can use, or keeping what we have.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Great post by the way.

You really did some homework on this one!

Other guards I really like are...

Eric Gordon and OJ Mayo. I think getting either of those two guys would be a huge win for the Blazers team.

Not too high on Bayless, seems like a Gil Arenas ball-hogging point guard to me.

First off good job but

I think you jumped the gun a bit prematurely. I know that this is the slow part of the season, but you probably should of waited until Tues, because, no offense, this doesnt really mean much right now.

Like I said I hate to rain on the parade but up until the 20th the mock drafts are at best a crap shoot. I still love ya man no worries.

What this means...

I wanted to look at the question: WHat happens if Portland ONLY lands the 13th pick. Can we add enough to keep us moving in the right direction by not manuevering at all and working to stash more prospects overseas.

For the record, I am going to run another mock draft using my teams needs analysis once the actual lottery balls are selected. You’ll see it on May 21st.

Strategy wise for now, KP & crew need to be assessing scenario’s starting with this scenario. THe 13th pick. Is it a good enough spot to make a good enough impact? Based on this mock draft, that is what I am trying to answer. Of course the lottery will change this, and of course KP skillz could also alter this draft heavily. How good can we do if we stay pat?

by Portland Dynasty on May 16, 2008 2:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think

we obviously add enough without making any moves to keep going in the right direction. We have Oden and Rudy waiting in the wings.

I like the Robin Lopez pick for Utah at number 23

Can you imagine a Boozer, Lopez, AK47 frontline in a couple years with Ronnie Brewer and Okur coiming of the bench?

I love the draft!

KP hinted on a radio show recently that the Blazers are looking to trade the first pick in this draft and it definitely sounded like they wanted trade into the top 10 from his mischevious chuckles.

I think they will try to move down far enough to pick up Russell Westbrook from UCLA. Jack or Sergio will be moved and Westbrook will study under Blake until he can win the position from him.

Draftexpress has us taking Pekovic and Casspi in the second round. I agree with those picks and think that if we keep any of our second round picks we will draft Euros and leave them for a year or two.

agree with the second round Euros

Jawai or Ibaka might be other options for the draft-and-stash strategy, if we keep any of the higher second-round picks. That being said, I’d rather see them packaged with the 13th to get a better PG than Augustin, either through draft or trade.

by abdelnaby on May 16, 2008 3:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

duh

you have us taking Jawai, my bad. Anyway, Ibaka and Jawai have seemed intriguing as 2nd round gambles for a while, though I’m not sure we need another developing big man stashed overseas (see Freeland, Nedzad, etc.)

by abdelnaby on May 16, 2008 3:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Sergio will be sticking around.

I think Blake has a good chance of being moved. Call me crazy, but if we trade for a legit starting point Blake will be getting less than 10 minutes a game, and that is only if Sergio gets zero minutes and Roy and Rudy never handle the point.

Rudy is probably a better option playing off the ball when Brandon is running the point anyway. I would guess that Nate will continue to develop Sergio and this will require at least a little playing time each game. Teams are desperate for good backup PGs, (Hawks, Clippers, Nets, Heat, Nuggets, 76’ers). Throwing him into the mix would definitely increase our chances of landing someone.

I voted trading picks for players

But I would really like to explore the idea of trading picks for future picks instead. As in add no more rookies to this squad and maybe get a real good pick down the road to help sustain the dynasty (he he).

Seattle Oklahoma City got knocked to #4. Other than that, not bad for a mock draft.

another pint guard or is that a half-pint guard?

Otherwise keep up the hard work. Good post.

I really don't want Nathan Jawai

I just don’t see him as being NBA quality.

Augustin’s a good player, no doubt, so he’d be a decent pick-up at 13. Westbrook might be reachable through trades, and I prefer him.

by rmcdougall on May 16, 2008 6:04 PM PDT   0 recs

With the 13th Pick

I think it’s a tweener pick in this draft. You can draft for need, but there could be four other players available, that are better than the guy your drafting. With that said, no way you don’t draft Kevin Love, if he’s available. Imagine Paul Millsap or Ronny Turiaf with the ability to sink a three or make a pass that will remind you of Arvydas Sabonis. I’ll take that off the bench for years and years.

Oh where oh were could my Jscot be
The cops took him away from me
He's gone to prison so I've got to be good
So I can see my Jscot when I'll leave this blog

by tominhawaii on May 16, 2008 9:50 PM PDT   0 recs

I agree

Even though PF is probably our strongest/deepest position, Love is just too good to pass up. If he falls to the #13 pick he will clearly be the best prospect available.

by trk on May 16, 2008 10:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If we draft Love,

couldn’t we trade Frye without losing very much? I guess Frye does give us more depth at center, but the outlet passes kevin love brings to the table are just staggering . I can imagine a barrage of full court alley oups to Outlaw. We would score 200 points a game and David Stern would ban the Blazers from the league.

If somebody hits you with an object you should beat the hell out of them.-Charles Barkley

by Winchester on May 17, 2008 2:04 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I wondered about that too

I always think you have two centers and two power forwards on the roster, and then either an insurance policy Will Perdue center and a back up power forward, or two back up center/forwards. If we added Love, McBob would have to go or Raef. I just don’t see Raef going. I think he’s just going to expire off the books, but KP’s not going to cut him because someone might offer him someone of value for Raef’s contract.

Oh, and with Love. Do you think the guards just take off running and whoever gets the rebound looks for Love first, so he can hit the streaking guards? I really want to see that.

Hugs are free, please share.

by tominhawaii on May 17, 2008 12:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I hope so.

It seems like we should run more anyway. Travis, Aldridge, Sergio, and Roy are especially good at it. Actually, if you throw Love in there that’s not such a bad line up against smaller teams.

Nice researching!

Only thing I disagree with a bit is Lopez slipping that far just because he’s a center prospect. Most agree he is projected to go at the 3-5 range, because centers usually just get that high pick advantage regardless of team need, and he is hands down the top center prospect.

by MGNNoah on May 17, 2008 11:37 AM PDT   0 recs

I love the overall approach.

That’s the way to do a mock draft: Not just say best player goes first, second-best goes second, et cetera,
but picking from the standpoint of the team likely to hold each respective pick,
and then removing that player from the available pool for the next pick.

In particular, you accurately note how point guard is a prime need for so many teams likely picking ahead of us
(although I think Minnesota should also be on that needs-a-PG list).
Some people here seem to think Westbrook may be available at 13, and you have him going at SIX.
That’s just about right, and I think Augustin goes higher, too, for the same reason.
Even Lawson has about a 50/50 chance of going top-twelve because of the point-deficient lottery teams.

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

by QualityPie on May 17, 2008 3:36 PM PDT   0 recs

Minnesota's PG situation...

Minnesota spent their 2005 1st rounder on Randy Foye and acquired 2004 1st round PG Sebastian Telfair. So Minnesota has a lot of upside on the youth that they have filling their point guard position. Is this position settled for them? NO, absolutely not. But, if Minnesota were your team wouldn’t you want expect the team to have acquired pieces that they can use through trades and draft? I would think that with those two prospects Minnesota should have this position shored up internally at the latest by the beginning of 2009 season. A little bit of up and down for a young team is not a big deal, as I wouldn’t mind dealing with those two guys as our PG options.
