Kobe Bashing

Am I the only one who is weary of all the Koby bashing on this site?

Does this quote change anyone's mind?  It doesn't sound like whining to me.

       ************
"Orange County Register, Portland's Rose Garden is a thorn in Lakers' side:

The Lakers have won 12 of 14 against the Trail Blazers at Staples Center but last won in the Rose Garden on Feb. 23, 2005.

    So what gives?

"The athleticism," the Lakers' Kobe Bryant said. "That's always the big thing. They're just so athletic and quick. That's always been a problem for us."

But I am also pretty weary of maybe 9-10 comments about any given subject once in a blue moon being described as "all the 'X' on this site".  "Kobe bashing" comprises no more than 1-2% of the total comments even on discussion of the L*kers, let alone all of the comments in general.  Nor have the proprietors of this site engaged in such.  Nor, I believe, are negative comments about Kobe localized to this site alone.  It's shorthand, I understand, but it's also a fairly inaccurate way of describing the community and its conversation about Kobe or any subject.

Whoa, I didn't relaize
you'd be quite this sensitive Dave.  I should have been way more careful and not chosen the words "on this site" as I'd guess it occurs everywhere.  But you see, this is pretty much the only one I read.

There is no way I would suggest or think you should be working to minimize Kobe bashing .... not at all. My diary was intended as food for thought for those frequent Kobe bashers and nothing more.

by TwoDeep on Apr 10, 2008 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions

It's not sensitive to you
or your comment in particular, but a result of having read "all the X on this site" frequently...almost always when someone has an axe to grind.  I put that response in your diary because I've known you long enough to know you won't fly off the handle, but it's meant for all.

Instead of "I'm tired of all the X on this site" why can't it just be "I don't like X"?  That's what's really being said.

Kobe is Evil and Nasty
Kobe is a cancer waiting to happen. Again. His personal problems will implode the L*kers. When the Blazers beat them in the playoffs -- next year, after Shaq and the Suns dump this on their a**es this year -- that team will shatter like a cheap glass. "Where are my athletic players??? Why don't they get me some horses??? Waaah! Trade me.  Waaah!"

Lewis Black will host, "Who is the Root of All Evil: Jake O'Donnell or Kobe Bryant?" Or maybe Donald Stern, as played by the The Emperor from Star Wars. Kobe being his Dark Lord of the Sith.

Sure he's cool. Dark lords are cool.

Yeah
I hate the guy but I don't HATE the guy.  I respect his game and think he is the best player in the NBA.  If he was rotting on the end of someone's bench, no one would care about him.  I think he knows that and for the most part, so do most fans.

I think it is not more than rivalry and fun.
Jokes are about repetitive topics (the silly doing silly things, the miser being miser, Jscot ruling the World, etc.) and Kobe is an easy one. USA citizens aren´t considered envious people (at least in my country, we think you may have other characteristics, but not this), but people that value other´s success instead of hate him. So I think it is a matter of rivalry and fun.

Another perspective might be...
the L*kers have been better than us for a long time, pure and simple.  You may admire the guy that walked away with your girlfriend.  He may be better looking than you.  He may have a better job and more money than you.  He may actually use a napkin at the table, know the correct way to hold a knife, and be able to get through an entire meal without once belching and then proclaiming, "Everyone has a little Captain in them!"  All of that's good and admirable.  But when you talk about him you're still going to call him a schmuck.  That's human nature...and the better he is, the more it's going to happen.

I thought
the Kobe Sucks chant was more a reactive response to the Laker fans there chanting, MVP.  Personally, I thought it was rather funny.

by Stryder9 on Apr 10, 2008 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I was in the section that started that chant
and let me tell you it was most DEFINITELY in response to the unbelievably hostile and annoying laker fans in our section. Chanting MVP every time the guy tied his shoes was getting old to say the least. I laughed when it first started and then joined it drown out the MVP chants which had gotten on my nerves for 3 quarters. The Laker fans were constantly invoking Game 7 and rubbing in our faces all the years the Lakers had beaten us. It was sort of a a THIS IS OUR HOUSE moment.

I personally loathe Kobe more then any player in the league for a variety of reasons not least of which is the Colorado incident. His getting Shaq traded for his own greater fame was classless at best. The guy flops more then Vlade Divac. No question he is an incredible talent but its such a waste that its in the form of such a classless jerk. Give me Jordan, Give me LeBron give me anyone but Kobe he's a punk plain and simple. His suckitude has nothing to do with his basketball skills and everything to do with his attitude.

Kobe basher
Kobe bashing and Kobe heckling are one of my favorite ways to express my NBA fandom. That said, I completely respect the guy and acknowledge that he has super-powers. I saw one of his 60+ point games at the Staples Center and it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on the basketball court. He's a Magneto type; A super-villian of enormous power who I respect even though he uses his skills for evil. I hate very few NBA players (Reggie Miller and Manu Ginobili are the first to come to mind) but villiany is an important part of my enjoyment of the game. It gives the games an operatic quality that would be missing if we had to look at the game "objectively" all the time. I think you can boo and hiss a player and still vote for him to be MVP at the same time. I can handle the cognitive dissonance.

by Jumbo on Apr 10, 2008 7:55 AM PDT reply actions

Drowning out
I think I justified to myself joining in on the "Kobe Sucks" chant, because at first they were only trying to drown out the "MVP" chants that was sadly actually getting heard pretty loud at the Rose Garden.
And the way I see it, the booing during his possessions can be for all the people wearing his jersey at the game. You paid to get into a Blazer home game, and you're going to wear purple and gold? That's fine. But you better expect to hear a chorus of boos!
A girl sitting behind me at the game kept scoffing and being like "Kobe doesn't suck! He's got over 30 points! What's wrong with these people??", to which I said "I think you're missing the point."

I hate The L*kers. Kobe is the face of the franchise, and IMO not that likeable in any case.

I'd dislike Kobe for several reasons beyond him being a L*ker.

Bashing The L*kers and Kobe is an expected and natural condition as a Blazer fan.

Sure I respect Kobe's on the court talent. It's undeniable. But stop bashing him? OK, I'll stop when Kobe stops whining after every call that goes against him.

Ok.
It looks like Kobe bashing is sport in itself that many enjoy so I'll have to try to "un-weary" myself.

I imagine though there are more than a few out there commenting negatively on Kobe's whining over ref calls that were blind to Jordan's propensity for the same. In Jordan's mind, I don't think he ever committed a foul in his life. Duncan's a whiner too and so was Magic and a host of others.

Yeah, Kobe did some bad things like cheat on his wife. But if that is a criteria used to determine who to root for, and the truth were revealed NBA wide, I'm afraid our hero list would be shortened considerably.

BTW, I found it refreshing that Kobe gave credit to Blazer's skills instead of making excuses about the loss like many do, e.g. "we gave them that one".  "Give credit where credit is due" was my father's favorite adage, and it has served me fairly well too throughout my life. Kudos to Kobe for that.

by TwoDeep on Apr 10, 2008 9:16 AM PDT reply actions

That is probably a good idea
since the bashing won't go away. As far as Jordan's whining goes.... I have always agreed (I remember how he would get calls on his fadeaway jumper. Think about that for second....it is virtually impossible to foul someone on a fadeaway jumper..but he continuously got that call). As far as Duncan goes..arrrg . He flopped so blatantly on a play on Sunday that there was actually about a half second delay between when he bumped in to Joel (I think) and when he started flailing and fell down. Guess what ...he got the call, of course.

oops sorry went off on a tangent.

by 92wastheyear on Apr 10, 2008 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely
not. Jordan never abused his star power and WAS fouled on his fadeaway jumper. Check the tape........check allllllll the tapes.

Besides, he was my hero growing up.

by iDea on Apr 10, 2008 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Of all the teams...
the L@kers draw the absolute ire of Blazer fans. They have reached the pinnacle of nemesis-ness, and he (Kohbee) is their leader.

Is he an amazing talent, one of the greatest ever? Of course. Would we love him if he was ours? Likely. Has he repeatedly thrust daggers into our hearts? Most certainly. I doubt we'd have such distaste for him if he never played for them. But he does. And so we shall valiantly root against him.

Also, the Coby Sucks chant thing, though seemingly immature, was without a doubt in response to the MVP chants that were ringing loud and clear through our house, the Garden of Oden (I've decided Greg should buy the rights to the arena and name it after himself... it's the right thing for a world class center to do). I don't think that any fan would actually think that Briant sucks. Besides, he's got to be 3rd or 4th on the MVP list right now (behind Paul, James, and maybe Garnett).

Also,
it was reported that Kobi's postgame media session was less than great, as he was late, he was short, and he was mumbling.

I found his answer to why they lost to us rather condescending. If we are so athletic, how come they beat us by 13 both times in LA?

Just another piece of his whiny pie.

based on the player, not the actual foul call.
BLOBE? You name the reason, and I'll hate

a call dosen't go his way. He gets this angry,

Kobe Bashing
Kobe bashing is second hand nature to most true Blazers fans. Anyone who claims to have had enough is obviously a Lakers fan in disguise or a bandwagoner who hasn't quite caught on yet to how things are done around here. I personally hate Kobe more than anything person, place, or thing in the known universe. I will never tire of Kobe bashing and I would appreciate it if you didn't bother me about it.

and one more thing...
last night during the LA/LA game (what a great game it was) cOBY got benched due to the sizeable margin and was over on the baseline during a timeout juggling the gameball (not like circus juggling, but like soccer juggling... you know, when someone keeps the ball off the ground by continually kicking and kneeing it to oneself).

just more of his antics... What, MLS started up and you were seen watching David Beckham play at an LA Galaxy game and you wanted to show your skills Kobe? blah. He's so smug... how could you NOT want to bash him?
