Evaluating Mock Draft lists

Both Draft Express and Hoops Hype have Portland taking Darren Collison at #13.  I don't get it.  HoopsHype says Collison is a role player at the NBA level and uses Earl Watson as a comparison player.  Seriously, who here thinks Earl Watson is the answer for Portland as our staring PG?  I wouldn't trade Jack or Blake for Watson.

Here are some of the guys listed below Collison:

Nick Batum  6-8  SF  (Rudy Gay)
CDR         6-6  SG  (Jerry Stackhouse)
Tyler Hansbourgh  6-9  PF  (Luis Scola)
Richard Hendrix   6-9  PF  (Paul Milsap)
Courtney Lee 6-5 SG  (Anthony Carter)

I select any one of these guys before I go with Collison.  (Unless it's Nick Collison we are talking about.)

Hendrix
I chose Hendrix just because I want to hear the guitar chords from Purple Haze at the Rose Garden every time he scores.

Good reasoning.
I might have to switch my vote.

by timg56 on Apr 9, 2008 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Collison is the best of that list.
I'm not crazy about any of them though.  I think KP has to at least consider trading the pick if we don't hit the jackpot with the likes of Rose or Bayless.

FYI ...
DraftExpress, at least, has a disclaimer that team needs have NOT yet been taken into account. Since HoopsHype's mock is "powered by DraftExpress," I would assume that's the case there too.

As for your question, I don't think you can base anything on those comparisons. The only one of those players I'd consider before Collison is Hansbrough. Batum MAYBE if we're intent on keeping him in Europe for a couple years ...

by bfan on Apr 9, 2008 12:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I didn't know about Hoopshype's draftboard
being derived from Draft Express.  Thanks.

I realize the comparisons are a weak indicator.  I'm in the set of folks who don't like comparisons much at all.  They are way too subjective.

I voted for Hansbrough myself, but gave consideration to CDR, Batum (who has slipped from where he was at earlier in the season) and possible Hendrix.  I'm rooting for Nathan Jawli with our first pick in the 2nd round.

The selection of Sean Singletary (Virginia) with Portland's last selection is interesting.  I like him better than Collison.

I am with you
on the Jawaii pick.  I think that guy could be a beast in a few years when we are ready to bring him over.

We're loaded at back up point guard

The t blazers are only gonna get better at that position with someone who has the potential to be better. Great ball pressure D, Penatration and dishing, and if we can have a outside threat as well... Gravy.

We have to trade up for Rose or Bayless (should we not win the lottery) or stick with what we have for next year.

Let's win the lottery. Top three is all we need.

If Hansboro enters the draft, and is available
At 13. I am pretty sure KP picks him. He fits all the characteristics of a KP pick. Winner. Upperclassmen. Fills a need (two rebounding and toughness off the bench).

by Sabonis4Ever on Apr 9, 2008 12:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

all of KP's criteria excepts 1.
BPA.  Best Player Available.

Tyler Hansborough is just not worthy of a lottery pick.  There will be much better options available at #13.

by jksnake99 on Apr 9, 2008 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah I agree
I agree, I like Tyler Hansbrough but I don't think that he should be a lottery pick. He is definetly a guy that can come off the bench, and provide some toughness, energy and grit. As far as the sf goes, fill me in on who you think would be a good pick for Portland?

by BenMatlockTheLawyer on Apr 9, 2008 2:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hansbrough...
is just another white dude who looks like he's trying harder than everyone else because he's so white. It makes him popular but it doesn't make him a good basketball player. We didn't reach for Adam Morrison and we're not wasting a pick on Hansbrough.

I feel that we are going to move up.
KP will target a player, hopefully Mayo, possibly Bayless and move up to get him.

Some peolpe here think that we do not have the pieces to move up in the draft, citing last years draft, where it took Ray Allen to move up to the 5th pick. However looking back there have been a lot of times that a team has moved up in the draft for next to nothing, PROVIDED that their current pick was included.

In 1996 Boston moved up from 9th to 6th for a next years 1st, the 9th and fricken Eric Montross.

And get this, in 1998, Dallas traded the #6 pick Robert "Tractor" Traylor, to Milwaukee for the 19th, Pat Garrity, and the 9th pick DIRK NOWITZKI!!

Then in 04 the Clippers traded Okafor and the 2nd to Charlotte for the 4th, Licingston, and the 33rd, Lionel Chalmers.

We have been in some trades in the past few years also for good and bad. Of course in 2005 we dropped down to Utah giving up the 3rd for the 6th, Webster and the 27th, Klieza in 05 and a 06 1st, Freeland. We also traded the 27th and the 35th for the 22nd, Jack.

Finally in 2006 we used the Khrapper and #4 TT to nab #2 LMA, and then traded Foye and kizzash to Miny for some project scrub, (I think he is playing in Khazakstan or something HAHA ;p)

So if KP thinks that Mayo, Bayless or even Gordon is the way to go, there are very stong precedents in moving up in the draft, PROVIDING that you include your current pick.

I would say Jack, 13th, $3mill and an '09 1st would do us wonders to move up in the draft and while I am not holding my breath fo Rose; Mayo, Bayless and Gordon all could come into play depending on order and combine/workout perfomances.

This is the last year that we can add youth and still have time to develop it as in 09 we will be gearing up for a deep playoff push. Ad to that the fact that this is the last time we will have a lottery pick for the next couple decades, we need to take a close look at some of the players that could be able to help us and pounce on them. I fully trust KP's judgement and scouting abilty and know that he could find us a gem in this years draft.

Spyder
you are always sooo money it's ridiculous. Who would you take were you KP. Would you go with Mayo? And how far do you think Mayo will drop?

by Idog1976 on Apr 9, 2008 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

How bout this, I would take
a PG who plays
  1. Good lockdown D
  2. Can hit a wide open 3
  3. High BBIQ
  4. Isn't afraid to take it to the hole if needed

Basically Starrett Black. If you could get on morphing those 2 players and get back to me.

I have no idea how far Mayo may-o drop (sorry had to do it). The only think I can hope for is that with all these C and F prospects coming out, a team will see that they can get a good big at #13 and something else from us. I mean if it comes down to Mayo, Bayless, or Gordon or Jordan/Randolph/Gallinari/Love, Jack and $3mill, I would go fot the latter.

I'm pretty high on Bayless...
From what I've seen, he's a good ball handler, has a great 3-pt shot and is a team player. (plus, have you seen him dunk?)

This is potentially a fantastic guard to place next to Roy.

He's a quicker Jack with a better outside shot, from what I've been able to gather.
Denfensively he works hard and should be able to stay with Williams and Paul. (Not stop them, just stay with them and make them work.)

Of course, I ebb and flow from week to week.

Last year even Pritchard said that no other teams wanted to move thier picks.

Hopefully this year is different, if he wants to get one more impact player in the draft.

by parkinglotj on Apr 9, 2008 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think
that we can trade #1 picks for consecutive seasons, so it would have to be our #13 pick this year plus our #1 in 2010.  This doesn't apply if the team with which we are trading picks someone for us and we pick someone for them (then you are trading players, not picks), but salaries have to match, of course.

I'm pretty sure we either trade up or trade out.  If we don't, it is because we've made another acquisition, such as (perhaps) trading existing players for a veteran PG.  If we do that, we might be looking for a big man to plug holes we've made by trading, and all this talk about picking guards is off-base.

Salaries don't match
on trading two unsigned draft picks as they are both zero in the equation.

Hmm
Every once in a while, I post things without actually either checking my facts or (worse) thinking about the facts I know.  What about you?

I like to spin it as I'm just checking to see if anyone is paying attention.  Any other excuses you could recommend?

Yeah, I use "just testing" sometimes
Actually, the main problem is I'm so busy planning world domination that I can't focus on insignificant details such as the accuracy of my comments.

I'm not excited about Mayo, Bayless, or Gordon
They are all guys who are scoring a decent amount of points, but doing it with only average efficiency and with unexceptional defense.  They also all have terrible assist/turnover ratios.  What about these guys is so impressive that we should go out of our way to acquire them?

by trk on Apr 10, 2008 2:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep I agree
We have a lot of assets to grab that final piece if it is in the draft.

Raef's expiring contract
Jack
Frye
Travis/Martell/Jones

Those are some decent assets that can get us pretty high draft pick.

Don Nelson: We didn't execute our gameplan in the first half. What's the plan? Don Nelson: Hit threes.

Outlaw

came to the defense of Roy last night. He's now part of this team and I won't have him traded. Webster too has to much upside to go.

Still we need us some Rose/Bayless action if we can get em. Picks and scrubs and money for our new guy.

your right money can get us some player.

a dollar a piece that we trade our first pick.
