Spurs are not the most fearsome team...
......................................................... They just put up a franchise low the other day, and looked bad doing it -- scored something like 29 points in the second half. The Blazers have a hard time with quick guards like Tony Parker, but it's a pretty vanilla team, as NBA powers go, and the general matchup with the Blazers isn't bad -- if they have Roy. It would be nice to have Marty as well, but that's hoping for too much, I reckon.

Probably 4-to-1 odds against the Blazers, maybe 5-to-1, but not unthinkable that they can pull the upset.

Question:
Does a player get credit for a rebound when he catches an air ball?
Nature bats last.

Was wondering that recently
we voted no, but I forgot to check the scoreboard to confirm

by Section323 on Apr 6, 2008 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Not if he was the shooter
If he was the shooter, and caught it, he gets credit for a turnover (unless someone else tipped it first).

Unless the rules have changed sometime in the last 20 years, if the scorer judged that it was a shot, the shooter would be charged with a missed shot, and it would be a rebound for the guy catching it.  If the scorer judged that it was a pass rather than a shot, the "shooter" would be charged with a turnover, and it would be a steal for the guy catching it.

If I were going to get it, and a bigger guy jumped in front of me and got it, he would have stolen my rebound.  The scorer might call it a rebound, but I would know it was a steal.

I'm frequently right, but always certain

Having watched 2 NBA games earlier...
.......................................... I can say with some authority that 90% of the Blazers' problems are related to their chronic-verging-on-hopeless inability to run the break. The reason they get so few points in the paint is because they are UNABLE to rebound-outlet-runrunrun-pass-take it to the rack. They just plod along, pass the ball around the perimeter, settle for a long jumper...

I wonder how much of Joel's...

I mean, he's big (25% of the battle) and has good technique (25% of the battle) and WANTS to get those boards (50% of the battle) -- but it certainly helps having to fend off NOBODY in his colors on the boards...

Every time Raef is playing he claims that he's the active NBA leader in total fouls committed. Shaq has twice as many personal fouls as Raef over his career, and there are many, many more players who have more fouls.

This isn't what he says
He never says fouls per minute (and I'm not sure if Raef leads this stat), he also states he's the active leader in career fouls committed. And it's completely wrong.  Though the Mikes are often completely wrong, so this doesn't come as a surprise.

I sort of agree...
... but what low post fix were you talking about?  When you have Oden waiting in the wings, it doesn't make much sense to trade away a ton of talent for a stop gap measure.

You are long on complaints and short on suggestions Timbo.

by jksnake99 on Apr 6, 2008 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I made various suggestions...
........................................... at the appropriate juncture.

Some good: Shaq, Shelden Williams; some not so good: Ben Wallace. But I called the low post defect EARLY and stewed over it for a good month while all and sundry were convinced that this was the Perfect-Chemistry-Marvelously-Balanced-and-Proportioned-Blazer Team-for-the-Ages (tm) in embryonic form...

This season KP did nothing but throw playing cards into a baseball cap on the other side of his office. His massive dealing this season was dumping one non-playing short-timer PG for a non-playing short-timer SG... So be it, he made his decision (and 98.7% of the BE community supported it) and now we get to see the end result in living color. It's gonna be brutal.

That's not negativity, that's realism.

I will note that KP's organizational model has been professed to be San Antonio -- and that's the style of play he seems to be committed to as well. I'm starting to wonder whether the Blazers will EVER be able to push the ball like a quality NBA West team with the current cast and crew...

Oh well, the 98.7% remain optimistic, deluded, and happy -- except while they're actually watching, at which time they're every bit as negative as I am said to be.

Right, Mr. Snake?

by timbo on Apr 6, 2008 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

absolutely
I get as frustrated as anyone during games.  I just think all of those suggestions (Shaq, Shelden Williams) would have won us a few more games this year but not gotten us to the playoffs and ultimately hurt us down the road.  I see the same holes in the roster that you do, I just take a longer term view about plugging them.

I don't think the Blazers will ever be a push-it team.  I think we will improve on the break (hey, we can't get worse) with Oden rebounding and Rudy as another scorer, but I don't think we'll be great.  Eventually (talking ~3 years down the road here), I  think we'll be good enough in the half court that a mediocre fast break will be enough.

by jksnake99 on Apr 6, 2008 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Now now, there are several here...
.............................................. who are consistently more negative than I am. I just have about 5 things that drive me nuts. As follows:

(1) Sergio, in any form, at any time, with any haircut, on any court.

(2) Consistent inability to run the fast break.

(3) Consistent inability or unwillingness of anyone not named Pryzbilla to play the low post; partial credit given to late-season LMA here. Particular onus for this failing on Channing Frye, the "#2 all time blocks leader" of the Pac-10...

(4) The failure of Nate to address points 1, 2, and 3 above; instead playing players out of position in an attempt to gloss over structural failings. (He was worse about this early, finally figured out the reason Joel was on the team and this became rather less of a problem, from my POV).

(5) The failure of KP to address points 1, 2, and 3 above.

Really, that about covers it, unless we want to add Tony Luftman as point 6...

I even don't mind the Spirit Mountain ad, unlike some people, ha ha.

Colonel Rondo and his second round armada?

If Boston is determine to rebuild and cut salary isn’t two mid lotto pics and the right salary filler decent. Maybe not enough but better than what most teams get in that situation. I would prefer that over the Chris Paul package.

I hope and figure that the Trail Blazers could have the best of both worlds. I’ve never seen a more bountiful 2nd round. Its conceivable that the team could deal both lotto picks and still find some nice players in the draft. Players like Orlando Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Kevin Jones, Will Barton are 1st rounders in most drafts even if its just based on hype and potential. Then you have some possible gems in such a deep draft like Machado, a couple guys that I personally like from Georgetown-their center Henry Sims and forward Hollis Tompson. Both high upside players that I would love to watch in the summer league. If PA were to ever buy into or trade into late first or second round now is the time. Give me Freeland, Diebler and four second rounders in the summer league with Rondo coaching.
